Bollywood college life – Ever since I saw  Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, I used to tell everyone around, “Life will start only when college does!”

After all, everything looked so perfect in KJO’s movies. I simply couldn’t wait for my college life to start!

And one fine day, the college finally started and you know what? It was not at all as I had dreamt of watching Bollywood college life in Bollywood movies.

Trust me college in reality is far different than that of Bollywood movies.

Here is a list of expectations every college student has before finding out the reality.

Bollywood college life –

1. Arriving college in a fancy car

Remember Hrithik Roshan’s entry in K3G? The big red car and everyone staring at you? Well! don’t expect too much because you won’t get Ferrari or BMW on the very first day of your college. Maximum what you can dream is an Alto.

2. Stylish entry

Remember Siddharth Malhotra’s Kukkad Kamal entry in Student Of The Year? Are you expecting the same that girls will be dancing and singing for you? Forget about it. Because in reality there would be no girl dancing or singing behind you.

3. Flawless Dresses

If you have dreamt of the flawless dresses like Rani Mukherjee and Alia Bhatt, let me tell you to lessen your expectations because in real life there will be NO HOT-PANTS, NO MINI-SKIRT, NO CROP-TOP, NO SLEEVELESS for girls and for boys NO Collar-less. Yes, the reality is far from the expectations, all you’ll get is a hectic schedule. Trust me dear you won’t even get time for you hairdo on most of your regular college days.

4. Background music

This was the most disappointing point of my college life. I was expecting to listen to a perfect background music for me, remember “Tareef Kru Kya Uski Jisne Tujhe Banaya, Shanaya”, yes, just like that. But wait! There were no violins playing in the background. Why do KJO’s actresses get it all? Why, God, Why?

5. Loud music in hostel

I am amazed how these Bollywood college kids end up partying every day with loud music in the hostel. In reality, first you will never dare to do so and if you do so, then, you will have to meet the warden and end up apologizing for your it.

6. Boys sneaking in girls hostel

Remember how boys are always willing to sneak in girls hostel in movies? That’s an absolute myth. Trust me boys are neither that desperate nor stupid in real life.

7. Hopes to see teachers like Sushmita Sen

I am sure all of you must seen Main Hoon Na! Remember Sushmita Sen? Well! If you are actually hoping to see such hot teachers let me give you a reality check. In reality, there would be way too much strict than that of Bollywood teachers.

8. Bunk or leave the class whenever you want to

Another biggest myth that Bollywood is showing since years, however, in reality you attend classes on regular basis otherwise they will deduct marks for attendance and you cannot leave the class whenever you want to, not at all.

Girls hostels – Bollywood is a raving maniac about teen lives and they spin a yarn about them too giving us insurmountable goals. Like in recent past, a movie was released called Student of The Year which shed light on the lives of students belonging from well-to-do households walking into college in designer clothes.

Of course that is way out of our league and we just end up with the stomach in knots. However, they are keen on showing the hostel lives and leave no stone unturned to glamourize it.

However, the real hostel lives not a bed of roses always and you come out as a better person, of course by experiencing stern realities of life from a government hostel. And trust us, those experiences are nothing at par with the ones shown in Bollywood movies.

Girls hostels –

1 – Girls don’t roam around in sexy lingerie around the hostel:

Well, if you are udging a common girls hostels bythe ones shown in Karan Johar movies, then you my dear is really ambitious. This is a common sight in the government hostels of hanging worn-out shorts like chunks of meat hanging in meat shops.

2 – There is not even change of clothes for 5 days in a row:

Yeah, because washing clothes becomes really tedious in a crowded girls’ hostel or we are just way too lazy to do so. Besides, there won’t be any song sequence happening on us so that we need to change costumes. Meh!

3 – The cat fights in girls hostels are as sexy as shown in the movies:

There is a lot of hand-to-hand combat, grouping, back-bitching involved. Even days of bullying and cornering the victim is also a predominant phenomenon in a government girls’ hostel unlike the ones in Bollywood movies where ‘gentle’ women fight as if hurling flower petals at each other.

4 – Girls don’t pillow fight at night:

The Girls hostels girls certainly don’t pillow fight at night. Instead, they keep awake until late munching on munchies and mug up for semesters. They even soothe their mid-night hunger pangs by making Maggi at 3:00 am. Guess what? They don’t even get a proper pillow to keep under their head, forget pillow fighting.

5 – Girls don’t only discuss clothes and make-up in the hostel:

Well, there is a serious dearth of  Sarah Jessica Parker of Sex and the City or Jenifer Anniston of F.R.I.E.N.D.S  in the government girls hostels.

6 – The Wifi is El Dorado for government hostel girls:

Well, not much into being Papa ki pari like the Bollywood girls’ hostel counterparts. We only ask from god for a good WiFi connection so as to finish 3 series of Game of Thrones before the semester.

7 – Not always ‘Lesbian action’ go behind the doors:

Convent school girls – We get a thousand visual images when we think about our schools now, pretty stunning ones.

Those waking up in the wee hours of morning, getting ready, waiting for the school bus, shenanigans in the recess, making fun of the teachers, first crush, first heartbreak everything. 2. The prayer words with heightened emotions:

“Our father be in heaven, holy be your name” . Our school began and ended with those prayer words and they kind of grew on us. No matter which religion we belonged to, we identified ourselves with the holy prayers.

3. It made us a Grammar Ninja out of us:

All the grammar Nazis out there will know how painstaking it was to live up to the expectation of our English teachers in Convent schools. Learning grammar to the point of perfection was an imperative as in all the convent institutes of high repute.

4. Remembering all the carols from the ‘Hymn book’:

And  you still hum them animatedly just to make yourself miss school some more. Sigh!

5. We would get punished for speaking a word that was Non-English:

Okay. That was pretentious, but that was the way of life for us in the convent schools. We were under constant scrutiny by the teachers than nothing is spoken other than English in the school premises.

6. No Sirs and Ma’ams, we were made to call our teachers Sisters and then there were Fathers:

The non-convent going friends would not get their head around when we said ‘XYZ sister taught us biology’. Those blank stares made us roll our eyes because.. why not!

7. Real science could be beaten for importance by Moral Science:

Moral science class bore more importance to us than the real science class for it infused some good habits in us that were distinguishable from normal school-goers.

8. Christmas over Diwali, anyday!

It was a mong-long carnival for us during Christmas. We were so adrenaline soaked when December arrived. Those carols, rehearsing the plays, decking up the school in joint efforts, gone are the days. Sigh!

9. Uniform code was the line drawn on sand:

We had no courage to break it and our uniforms were always on point to avoid the unsolicited wrath of the sister. Phew!

10. And then the rumoured graveyard:

We span a yarn about the probable graveyard at the backend of the school. The spooky stories really gave us serious entertainment for days on end.

1. Making a makeshift kitchen

Hostelfood is bad. Period. No matter which city, state or country you belong to, you will never have good things to say about the food served in hostels. While you gobble up the food as you have no option, there are times when you get hunger pangs as you have not eaten enough. To deal with such situations, students make a makeshift kitchen in their room. They put together a bunch of utensils, stove or a microwave so that they can whip some quickies like noodles, sandwich or toast that will help them satiate their hunger till the time the next me is served in the hostel.

2. Sneaking out secretly

There are times when you are hungry and there is no way you can get a delivery boy to get food for you. The only way is to sneak out o the hostel and get it from outside. Or, you might want to go out for the night show of a movie with your friends. Hostels have strict time limits for students. You are not allowed to leave and enter hostel after a certain time. But when has there restrictions been able to stop students who always find a way to sneak out of the hostel premises stealthily?

3. Playing naughty games

When you are surrounded only by your friends, there is no need for you to pretend to be goody-goody and nice. Also, you need to constantly entertain yourselves in the lack of too many entertainment options. So, most students play games in the hostel. Adult games, of course. If you live in a co-ed hostel, things could get a lot of exciting as boys and girls will play these games together. This could be something as basic as truth and dare or as raunchy as a strip poker.

4. You forget the meaning of privacy

Gone are the days when you used to have a room of your own in your parents’ sprawling apartment or home. When you are sharing a room with multiple people, privacy is something you should forget about right from the onset. You have to use the bathroom to change, switch off the lights id everybody else is sleeping. You have to adjust to the nature and habits of your roommates and vice-versa.

5. Binge watching movies

When you are devoid of too many options to entertain yourself with, you turn to the only thing that helps you cope up with the hostel life – your laptop. Binge-watching films or television shows is a good way to while away time when you have nothing much to do. You get your friends together on a movie or TV series watching marathon and spend hours glued to your laptop.

Things backbenchers did – What backbenchers did in their college life spiralled into funny stories in the later period to amuse the next gen.

Remember how Ted Mosby’s dating endeavours in the 20s made  for good entertainment and life lesson for his children, so to us? Drawing cue from our own lives, we hover and grow up around the anecdotes from our fathers’ childhood and college lives too, and tallying them with our own backbenching accomplishments, we end up finding them akin to each other.

So, apparently, backbenchers are backbones of a class who swing open the gates of shenanigans with their antics.

We mostly made fun at the professors’ expense and when their appearance stroked our humour nerves, we did the below mentioned things as backbenchers.

Things backbenchers did –

1. We scribbled cartoons:

Seriously, we grew a great promise in art, especially drawing cartoons by simply scribbling their pictures at the back of the notebook. Once done, the notebook was made to tour across the whole bench and we really had tough time supressing laughter.

2. We always landed in the professor’s hit list:

The big mistake was to take the professor for a fool because we were constantly under watch and he was always on the prowl for an opportune moment to throw us out of the class.

3. We replaced lyrics of a given song with considerably funnier ones:

Recipe for bullying the professor on target- Take a sad song and make it worse. We used to pick a regular song and replaced its lyrics with lyrics that were suggestively derogatory to the professor and sang it aloud on his absence to take front benchers aboard.

4. We formed a ‘gang’ as a defence mechanism:

We were always in a gang so that no specific one could be singled out and punished. It was so addictive to bully that punishments did not look as threatening to us. But forming a gang always helped us escape the consequences of our delinquencies.

5. We gave that blank stare to him when asked a question:

We were never ready to face his wrath after being caught chatting and giggling. Pretty embarrassingly, when he pointed out at any of us to ask a relevant question, the class went on a pin-drop silence mode thereby making us stand like a fool.

6. We always forgot to bring our books for his class:

Because, we never deemed his class to be important and paid absolute no heed to his demands only to be embarrassed by him in front of the whole class.

We used to hide our faces in order to escape his sight:

And to avoid being stood up to asked random questions. We knew we were the soft target so better be incognito.

These are the Things backbenchers did – So, that’s what we did when the professor in question emerged in our sight and those memories still plant a smile on our face.

Depression and Happiness are part and parcel of life. There are times when our fate brings us to a saturation point and we want to end our lives. One thing must be considered that this numb heart and a chaotic mind are results of your own tunnel view and considerably wrong perception towards things. Research says, at least 8000 people commit suicide worldwide every year among which a figurative 17% belong from India. The methods are different so are the reasons but it brings the same misfortune for the families concerned.

No, we are not here to drop pearls of wisdom and pass on misty-eyed life philosophies, but one thing for sure, suicide never solves any problem because retrieving your life from sparse should always be your challenge come hell or high water. What is life without challenges?

No problem comes without a solution only you need the patience to seek it.
