International cricket is in jeopardy with the death of Aussie cricketer Phillip Hughes.

The Australia Test batsman was struck on the head by a ball which was believed to be a bouncer after succumbing to a serious head injury.

The 25-year-old passed away after he was hit in the back-left side of the head while batting for South Australia against New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Tuesday.

Since then, the whole cricketing fraternity is in mourning and the 1st Test between India and Australia has been delayed as well.

With the safety reasons now a concern in cricket, the question is raised that, is cricket a safe sport? English skipper Alistair Cook gave his side of the verdict about the safety reasons. He said: “It hasn’t been a safer game ever than it is now. We’ve got to keep on playing cricket the same way. The safety provisions over the last few years have gone through the roof. Bouncers can’t be outlawed.”

Thus, here’s a note to the ICC. Let cricket as it is for the below 5 reasons noting YOU why:

1 – The ‘X-factor’ diminishes
If the ICC and the rest of the cricket loyalists are to bend the rules of cricket pertaining to the Phil Hughes tragedy, that may kill of the ‘x-factor’. The sledging, drama, banters etc might just go ‘off air’ and cricket will become the boring, boring sport.

2 – Batsmen’s advantage

3 – Bouncers are mandatory
Barring the Phil Hughes tragic moment, there have many other instances in the past where cricketers have been bruised and battered by the short ball. But in no way, the ‘bouncer’ is meant to hurt or kill off the opposition batsman. Surely Sean Abbot had no intent nor did the former know his delivery will land the southpaw on the deathbed.

4 – Make 2 bouncers per inning
If the analysts or pundits are calling for an end to bouncers, why not make a tweak in the rule. The administrators (ICC) should allow 2 bouncers per inning or any such rule to give the sport its rightful meaning at least!

The unparalleled spirit of the game can be gauged by the fact that Cricket isn’t just a game in India; it is a bona fide religion. Over the years, the game has expanded its reach both on and off the field and looks like the players, as well as boards, are certainly reaping benefits from it.

In case of an Indian cricketer, the player earns both from his contract money and a share of the BCCI’s gross revenue. To elucidate this point, let’s take example of some prominent Indian players. Virat Kohli, who has a Grade A contract, along with other distinguished names like MS Dhoni, former Indian captain, are those who earn their retainer plus share from the gross revenue. If we add earnings from IPL and brand endorsements to that list, it ends up making them probably the richest cricketers in reality.

Amidst all the speculations of test cricket getting outclassed by modern T20 cricket, Indian test cricketers find themselves at a higher spot, when it comes to payment, as compared to players from other countries. Getting a healthy sum of $23,380 per game, India’s Test cricketers earn almost twice what an Australian cricketer receives for playing at home.  Well if this doesn’t make them stand out from the rest of the country players, then what does??

When a fast bowler unleashes the pink-ball the colour blind cricketers can’t see the ball, and in almost every team across the world, a colour-blind cricketer will be there.

So, the question is for that one player ICC will shelve the pink ball cricket considering a few cricketers’ problem, especially, when it won heart and mind of cricket fans.

When the pink ball cricket was introduced to international cricket a portion of the cricket world raised their voice against this day-night Test match because they believed that it would destroy the charm of red ball cricket. But, this is not the first time a section of cricket community opposed to a new innovation. In 2005, when Twenty 20 International was introduced the puritans ripped ICC apart as they thought that the shortest format of the game will affect the Test cricket most. But, proving them wrong, T20 cricket has complimented the longest format as the cricket has become fast-paced, batsmen are scoring runs fast and athletic fielders are very common. The new innovation is good, but ICC should take care of cricketers, without them the game is nothing.
