Here she tells us the must-dos and how-tos.

If you were besotted by those smoky ghats that formed the perfect backdrop for Dhanush’s Raanjhanaa, then trust me that an actual visit to Benaras will leave you in raptures. I made my first trip to Varanasi also known as Kashi in 2008. I was in college and obviously low on budget. Though, I had my apprehensions about an overnight journey from Delhi to Benaras in a sleeper class, my fears notwithstanding, I boarded the train. But, as opposed to what I had thought it would be, the journey was interesting in the company of some foreign tourists in my compartment.

Tip no. 1: Try and eat at every station. Don’t rely on railway’s pantry. The cost turns out to be cheaper, and you get variety.

Whiff of the holy city

Train from Delhi reaches Varanasi at around 8am, but my friend from BHU (Banaras Hindu University), asked me to get-off at Manduadhi – one station after Benaras. I was clear that I will not be staying in a fancy hotel with a balcony overlooking the Ganges and blow my hard-earned pocket money. So, I took a shared auto and reached Lanka. The ride from the station to Lanka was unforgettable. I was dressed in shorts and invited stares of all kinds. Women were staring in disapproval and men, well, they were leaching! But they looked harmless.

Tip No. 2: Wear anything, but if those stares bother you, just smile at people. They will get conscious and will stop staring.

Park yourself

My friend received me and showed me my accommodation for the next three days. ‘Swayamvar Vatika’ written on a dirty white board in red drew my attention. Shady, I thought. And, as I heard Rs. 200 per night, I put my foot down. A little persuasion by my friend convinced me to give it a try. The room was spacious with an attached bathroom. I wasn’t too sure about the cleanliness part, so my friend offered his personal bed sheets and blanket from his hostel. The hotel’s manager promised to get the room cleaned with Dettol. I could now peacefully plan my day ahead.

Tip 3: Stay in a cheap hotel near the university area to save money. Carry your toiletries, and bed and pillow covers. Ask house-keeping to mop the room with disinfectant for trouble free nights.

The perfect sunrise

My tour-de-Benaras began with getting up at six and walking all the way to Malvia Bridge to catch the sunrise. Between those temple bells, morning artis, holy chants infused with pure classical singing by a helmsman and the smoke, I had witnessed the most beautiful sunrise of my life. One should walk back to Lanka to have the most famous and scrumptious breakfast, ‘Chaachi ki puri bhaaji and jalebi’ – all of it for just 15 bucks! Walk a little ahead and the world famous Pehelwan ki lassi is there to lure you. One glass and you are set till the lunch time. After a very heavy breakfast, it is best to walk across the narrow lanes of the city that houses almost 200 temples and hit the ghats.

Tip 5: Take a boat ride across the Ganges to add more charm to your experience. Don’t get scared if you see any dead body floating along the boat. They are dead and harmless!

Benaras on foot

I started from one ghat and walked all the way covering Assi, Manikarnika, Kedar and many more. Spend your evening at Dashashwamedh ghat to witness the impeccably choreographed grand Ganga arti. Picture this: a row of priests sitting on raised platforms by the bank of the Ganges with humungous, multi-tiered oil lamps in their hands that move in absolute sync. The heavy Sanskrit chants lending it a perfect background. Strikingly breathtaking!

In your schedule, keep an entire day to spend in Gadhaulia. From Bengali maach-bhaat to Banarsi silk and beautiful curios, you will have to suppress your urge to splurge. This is when you will spend the money that you had saved on the trip. So shop to your heart’s content and take a piece of Banaras back with you!

Tip 5: Walk across the city and save money to visit places around Varanasi. Do take long walks inside BHU. Though I am sure you won’t be able to see the entire campus, please carry a camera to capture the conjuring beauty of the city.

Har Har Mahadev!

The historical masterpieces are characterized by the time and age they belong from and the level of catastrophe they had to undergo.

However, there are some historical places that tourists are barred to visit and only read about in the books. Each of those bears a sad or grim story that these hold on to in the deafening silence of the desolated remnants.

Here we are giving you some names of such Historical destinations where you can barely visit:

Forbidden historical destinations

1 – Qin Shi Huang, China:

This place is shrouded with mystery. It houses the tomb of China’s first emperor with the same name under 250 ft high hill, who died around 210 B.C. The Terracotta warriors were found here in 1974. It is said that they are guarding the grave of the emperor for more than two millennia. It is also believed that there are booby traps spread across the place so the place generally remains closed for tourists.

2 – Ilha da Queimada Grande, Sao Paolo, Brazil:

This is otherwise called the Snake Island which is believed to be the deadliest place of the Earth. The snakes that reside there is thousands are venomous golden lancehead pit vipers. It is located 90 miles offshore and the place is under the surveillance of the Brazilian Government. A single bite from any of the snake can cause Kidney failure, internal bleeding and death.

3 – Vatican Secret Archives, Rome, Italy:

The history buffs will kill for visiting this place but no luck for students, journalists, tourists or amateur historians. Only erudite scholars are allowed to visit the place with special permission. There are unique documents preserved such as 1943 Papal Bull that separated the New World between Spain and Portugal or a 1530 petition that ask for the annulment of the marriage of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon.

4 – White’s, London, UK:

This one houses the oldest of British cultures in history. The White’s in London was established in 1693 which was meant for the gentlemen only apart from some notable exceptions made for Queen Elizabeth II on two occasions.

5 – Area 51, Nevada:

This happens to be one of the most secretive places of Earth which is otherwise known as the Groom Lake. There is an Air Force base of United States whose agenda remains unknown, perhaps there is a conspiracy theory at play. In another belief, as UFO descended there lately and aliens are held captive there. The name could never see the light of the say if the US government didn’t publicly acknowledge it in the year 2005. Top secret aircraft and weapon technologies have been developed and tested in the area.

6 – North Sentinel Island, Andaman, India:

The indigenous warrior tribe Sentinelese would try to kill you if you set foot here. They have been the inhabitants of the islands for more than 60,000 years and would not relinquish their stronghold over it. They are snapped off from the modern world by their own choice. The Indian government even stopped all attempts to bring them to civilization and instead raised a prohibition for the tourists in the place.

But then what is prohibited, appeals to us more. There is nothing one could do to visit these places nevertheless as the governments intervened and forbid us to.

Traveling is a healing drive of the perturbed mind. Sometimes it is compulsory to get lost in order to find yourself and the passion for travelling dies hard for a travel enthusiast. He will have iron-clad determination about making his next travel a learning experience, not merely a an endeavour to click Instagram-worthy pictures. We hold Italy in high regards for being the fashion capital of the world but apart from that it has many other aesthetic nuances that makes the tourists return to their places with a content heart.

Venice is the capital of Northern Italy’s Veneto region which ushers the travellers into the idyllic Gondola rides across the narrow water-ways in the city. Sitting in the Gondola accompanied by the love of your life, you always want to hum ‘Do lafzo ki hai yeh zindgani’

While these goldola rides are the antidote to all anxieties, here are a few things you need to know about them, pretty mesmerizing at that.

Gondola Rides –

Travelling in a Gondola can be well likened with travelling by Hanson cab in New York’s Central Park. It is breathtakingly delightful although the prices might lean on a bit higher side.

The Gondolas can be found in the main tourist spots, predominantly near Tronchetto and Pizzale Roma, where tourist cars are parked. The Gondoliers are likely to walk up to you and ask if you want a ride.

Venice’s most sought after transportation is traghetto, the public gondola ferry which are similar to privately rented counterparts and helps you tour along the city.

The gondola rides are downright romantic with the beauteous city lights in tow. It sets the tone for a romantic evening so no wonder the demand is higher in the afternoon and when the dusk falls.

You can book music and singers to make it even more romantic with your lover. The singers will sing the soul-stirring numbers for around 35 minutes and you will soak in the beauty of the moment. At least 4-5 songs they will sing as per your request.

You can do an online reservation for the Gondolas and the musicians too, if you please.

All the Gondolas have identical designs and mostly made from Oak, Elm, Lime, Larch, Fir, Cherry, Walnut and Mahogany.

The Gondolas previously used to be colourful but from 16th century onwards they are painted black. It was done as a measure to abide by the law passed by the government who did not want the Gondolas to look flashy with loud colours and extravagant ornamentation.

The modern Boat-shaped gondola designs go eons back and accredited to 19th century boat-builder Tramontin, whose descendants still run the Tramontin Boatyard. The constructional development of Gondolas continued until mid-20th century and then the city government intervened to stop further developments.

These are the facts about Gondola Rides – Hope these facts about the Gondolas made you really want to put on your travel-shoes and book tickets for Italy already!

Are you wondering how they even started with all this? Well, according to nypost.com, Jack Morris, is originally from Manchester, United Kingdom, started jet-setting around the world after buying a one-way ticket to Bangkok when he was only 21 years old. And Lauren Bullen grabbed attention when she started uploading pictures on her account.

They were doing their own thing i.e. building their brand portfolios. Lauren and Jack met in Fiji for a job, and are dating since 2 years and are still going strong. They both really enjoy their company and from day one are inseparable. Cute, isn’t it?

Make Money On Instagram – Well, what do you have to say about their pictures? Also, get an idea to be FAMOUS on social media, so that you’ll be able to make money.

Do you think that you can climb mountains? And do you think that you can cross the breath-taking bridges? Well, before I tell you about the bridges in details, here’s something that you must know.

There are so many bridges around the world. Some includes bridges over the ocean, bridges that connect countries, bridges that cross-ways mountain ranges and a bridge that ends as a tunnel. Now, I believe that there are many people who will never dare to visit such bridges. Well, I don’t know about you, but I think, that if you ever want to beat your fear or experience some crazy rides in your life, then you must dare to visit these breath-taking bridges.

So, here is the list of “ World’s Most Dangerous Bridges ” –

Millau Viaduct, France

Millau Viaduct was said to be the tallest bridge in the entire world (until 2012) with one mast’s summit at 343.0 meters i.e. (1,125 ft) The length of this bridge is said to be 8,071 feet and it was awarded with the “Outstanding Structure Award”. English architect Lord Norman Fester and French structural engineer Michel Virlogeux are the one’s who designed it. It is a bridge that crosses the valley of the river Tarn and it is also higher than the Eiffel Tower.

Bay Bridge, Maryland

This is another scariest bridge in the world. It connects the eastern shore region with the northern shore region. During bad weathers, it becomes very difficult to see everything that’s ahead. It is nearly 5 miles long and travelling on this bridge is almost like taking a risk.

Langkawi Sky Bridge, Malaysia

It is one of the longest curved pedestrian bridges in the world. According to the sources, the whole construction of this bridge wasn’t easy; the entire bridge was lifted at top by a helicopter. This bridge is a 410 ft curved pedestrian suspension bridge and is located at a peak of a mountain on Palau Island in Malaysia.

Trift Bridge, Switzerland

This bridge was actually built in 2004, but conditions worsened when due to high winds the bridge started to sway. Later, in 2009, it was again given a safer structure and now it is good. It is the longest pedestrian-only suspension bridge in the Swiss Alps. Climbers need to be prepared to face condition there and also sometimes the view up there can make people go back. This skinny bridge is 170 meters in length.

‘

Ghasa, Nepal

This hanging bridge is one of the dangerous bridges in the entire world. Even though it is dangerous, many people cross it daily, some farmers carry their good and even the camels are taken from this bridge. Despite its poor construction, this bridge is said to be crowded and risk-taking.

The Oresund Bridge, Sweden-Denmark

This bridge was awarded with “Outstanding Structure Award” in 2002. This bridge begins as a cable stayed bridge in Sweden and ends as Tunnel in Denmark. This dangerous bridge has nearly 4 lanes and double track railway.

The bridge has a total length of 8km i.e. 5 miles and then when it transitions the tunnel it runs more 4km.

Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, Northern Ireland

This bridge will give you best views, but make sure that once you reach on top, don’t look down at all. ‘Cause it is counted as a scariest bridge. It is been said that the people who experience walking on this bridge, take a boat while returning. Let me tell you, that it is 65 feet long and 100 feet high above the rocks down there.

You must be having an exhaustive list of tantrums to through while on a holiday, right?

Just to make the life of your travel agent or your holiday provider a living hell, you wouldn’t leave any stone unturned!

Yes, some people do that, and this is how they do it!

According to a recent story, these are genuine complaints, hilarious complaints, made by holidaymakers to a popular international holiday organiser.

These are utterly pointless and obnoxiously hilarious at the same time! Read on!

1. “They should not allow topless sunbathing on the beach. It was very distracting for my husband who just wanted to relax.”

Ummmm really?? Ma’am, you should take your husband to a beach where only naked fishes sunbathe!

2. “On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don’t like spicy food.”

Oh well, then you should stick to vacationing in Somalia! You won’t be served anything there, forget curries!

3. “We went on holiday to Spain and had a problem with the taxi drivers as they were all Spanish.”

Last time I was on a holiday to Japan, I hired a Japanese translator! But he was no help! He knew only Japanese! How disgusting!

4. “We booked an excursion to a water park but no-one told us we had to bring our own swimsuits and towels. We assumed it would be included in the price.”

Hell yeah! Do we ever take our chairs and tables to a restaurant? They are always included in the price, right?

5. “The beach was too sandy. We had to clean everything when we returned to our room.”

Thank goodness the beach was not shitty! I can not even begin to imagine the room after that!

6. “We found the sand was not like the sand in the brochure. Your brochure shows the sand as white, but it was more yellow.”

Errrr, well sir, we are extremely sorry, next time we will make sure we wash the beach sand in a good detergent too, just like our brochures!

7. “It’s lazy of the local shopkeepers in Puerto Vallartato close in the afternoons. I often needed to buy things during ‘siesta’ time — this should be banned.”

Oh yes, it should be! Walking in sleep is injurious to health!

8. “No-one told us there would be fish in the water. The children were scared.”

We are sorry! We forgot to put 10 Million+ Noticeboards around 10 Million+ beaches around the world saying that “There are fishes in the water, beware!”

9. “Although the brochure said that there was a fully equipped kitchen, there was no egg-slicer in the drawers.”

There were no eggs in the fridge too! Right?

10. “I think it should be explained in the brochure that the local convenience store does not sell proper biscuits like custard creams or ginger nuts.”

Ma’am next time, we will make sure we take your bakery recipes from you and send across to all the local convenience stores before you arrive at a destination!

11. “The roads were uneven and bumpy, so we could not read the local guide book during the bus ride to the resort. Because of this, we were unaware of many things that would have made our holiday more fun.”

Oh well, next time we will include an extra reading time in your hotel room stay! Make good use of that please!

12. “It took us nine hours to fly home from Jamaica to England. It took the Americans only three hours to get home. This seems unfair.”

Racists, bloody racists everywhere!!

13. “I compared the size of our one-bedroom suite to our friends’ three-bedroom and ours was significantly smaller.”

Yes, technically, logically and intelligently so, 1 Bedroom will always be smaller than 3 Bedrooms put together!

14. “The brochure stated: ‘No hairdressers at the resort.’ We’re trainee hairdressers and we think they knew and made us wait longer for service.”

The resort people have a long story against hairdressers! They hate all the hairdressers! They are actually planning a long revenge against the hairdressers of the world! They just hate….. THE HAIRDRESSERS!

15. “When we were in Spain, there were too many Spanish people there. The receptionist spoke Spanish, the food was Spanish. No one told us that there would be so many foreigners.”

Well, you should try visiting Uganda! Nobody speaks Spanish over there! No Spanish people either! We promise!

16. “We had to line up outside to catch the boat and there was no air-conditioning.”

Oh well, we have applied for an electricity connection to the “OUT SIDE”! We hope next time will be better for you!

17. “It is your duty as a tour operator to advise us of noisy or unruly guests before we travel.”

But how can we advise YOU against YOU?

18. “I was bitten by a mosquito. The brochure did not mention mosquitoes.”

We believe in charity! Mosquitoes deserve a vacation too, without being disturbed!

19. “My fiancée and I requested twin-beds when we booked, but instead we were placed in a room with a king bed. We now hold you responsible and want to be re-reimbursed for the fact that I became pregnant. This would not have happened if you had put us in the room that we booked.”

You missed the caution message written on the brochure ma’am! We mentioned very clearly “Use Safety Measures, wherever applicable”

Well, well, well, life would be so boring without a holiday complaint maker!

Bring me some more!

This specie of turtles is an endangered one as of now.

Therefore to preserve them this special festival is going to take place at the Velas Beach near Ratnagiri, Maharashtra.

These newly hatched turtles all together take a march at the sea side during the Annual turtle festival. The main motive behind celebrating this festival is to help preserve and save the marine turtles who are suffering a high mortality rate across the globe due to many sea activities like shipping, trawling etc. They have been highly threatened by such human activities.

So, it’s again that time of the year when the dawn breaks down and with the numerous sunrays and lovely sunshine you can see many number of turtles hatched from the eggs and coming out of it, all together. The sight is just amazing to see and you can cherish the moment by praising the Mother Nature and its wonders.

turtle festival

The Konkan region is the right place to witness this festival. The beauty of this place can leave you awestruck and also along with that, the beautiful beaches are apt for relaxing and chilling all day.

For those who are an ardent lover of nature, you will love the never-ending music of the sea waves and its tranquility, this place and the festival can come to your rescue from the busy city life.

One great thing is that this festival takes place on the weekends and some few kilometers away from the city of Mumbai. Every year many people from different places come, including a large number of foreigners too.

turtle festival

Apart from this, it is an ultimate place to pitch in your camps and enjoy the perks of camping with your family and friends. The ride near the Konkan coast and a stroll at this Konkan beach is simply amazing and would leave you with an amazing travel experience. Also you can try your hands on trekking at the nearby places.

So this weekend, all you need to do is simply pack your bags, prepare your tents and drive in to this lovely place and be a part of the Konkan Turtle Festival 2015. Have an amazing weekend ahead!

Good Luck!

Dates – 14-15 March 2015.

It is known as the city of dreams, financial capital of India and a place where every day around thousands of new people come to try their luck.

There is some special thing about this city that makes anybody fall in love with it. Most of the youth in India have a dream to stay in Mumbai, either having an amazing college life or a memorable bachelor life with a dream job.

So what are those reasons that make so many people have an affinity towards this metropolitan compared to the others?

Why is it said to be an ideal place for a youth to explore the world, the age and much more beyond that?

Well, the reasons can be many and so we list down some of the major ones to let you know what is so special about living in this city. I still remember my first day in this city a year ago.

Right from the world of Bollywood to the beautiful Arabian Sea, this city has a lot in store for you for a great life ahead.

Independence

In a very unique manner this city gives an amazing sense of independence and confidence. When you learn to live alone in this city, you build up a confidence to go anywhere and everywhere alone all by your own. The fast life of this city is something that a youth will always like.

Safety

Compared to the other cities, Mumbai is much safer and cooler. People here don’t give a damn of what you are exactly wearing. Also, with a proper transport system of local trains, taxis, autos and buses your travel is readily sorted. This city will surely teach you the importance of a single minute when you miss your local. You can even walk out in this city without any fear even at the stroke of midnight!

Land of opportunities

With some best colleges of India and being the financial capital of the country, it has numerous opportunities for your career right from a college to your job. Also meeting some interesting and experienced people in this city can teach you some of the great life lessons you will be learning during your bachelorhood.

Party hub for youth

This city provides you with all kinds of places where you can probably ‘chill’ with your friends. When the whole country sleeps, Mumbai is the place which is all alive and very much awake. You will find many food joints or even stalls that are open till the odd hours. Also you can easily have some amazing night-outs all around the city exploring the place right from Juhu beach to South Bombay!

Food food food!

Food is all that we live for! So here in Mumbai you can simply hog on the vada pao at a roadside stall to a special tea at the Taj Hotel. The city has zillions of amazing food joints that can make your masters taste best. Right from the age old Irani cafes to Chowpaty at Juhu beach you can have all kinds of food over here. And yes, don’t miss ‘baraf ka gola’ at the Chowpaty.

The endless end of the sea

The best part of this city is probably the sea, around which the whole city resides. On some days when you feel low or even happy sitting near the sea any time will surely make you feel better. A walk around the beach, Marine drive or Worli Sea Face will instantly make you fall in love watching the endless end of the sea!

So come to this lovely city and explore yourself during the most important phase of life and that is your youth. If nothing, what you will take from here is a spirit of life that this city celebrates every day!

Pangot is about 15 kms further from Nainital, and you would drive through pristine forest roads to reach here. Car is the best option to reach this lesser known hill station. Either you can hire a cab directly to Pangot from Delhi, or reach Nainital by bus and then hire a taxi to Pangot. On your way from Nainital, drive through the forests of Cheena peak range; stop by at snow view point and Kilbury for excellent views of lush green meadows, floating clouds and snow peaked mountains far away. One can visit Pangot in summers for Himalayan chill, or in winters to witness the snowy marvel.

Whatever be the time, Pangot is tranquil and meditative all year round.

What to Eat

Food here is very basic, but very homey, including the usual north Indian food like parantha, rice and dal. Pangot is a very small hill station, so eating places are all in the range of 1-2 kms.

The best option is to eat freshly made food at your hotel.

Where to Stay

There are some very good, cottage style hotels in Pangot, with gorgeous views. However, the staying options are limited to just 4 or 5. If you can manage, make an advanced hotel booking, but just dropping by without reservation will not leave you roofless. If you don’t find a commercial accommodation, perching over at a local residence will be as hospitable. The properties that have cropped up here belong to residents who have moved to other cities. The hamlet does not see huge tourist crowds, so you will easily get a luxurious room at a reasonable rate.

Do bargain, or maybe get meals included in the tariff, because sometimes the rates are jacked up.

What to Do

When in Pangot, throw off those slippers and just chill! There is nothing much touristy to do at Pangot. One can go for walks in the forest and soak in the sun, listen to birds and devour the untouched beauty of nature. If you really want to visit a place, plan a day visit to nearby lakes like Saat Tal and Naukuchia Tal. Pangot and surrounding regions are fed by several perennial and seasonal streams, so you can also go on your own exploration trek to marvel in nature’s beauty. The forest area in Pangot itself is not very thick and it is an easy hike. You will also find small, open green pastures on your way.

If you love to observe birds, park yourself at Snow View Point or Kilbury, the best places for bird watching.

Travel tips

Tell your folks at home that you will not be able to contact them for the number of days you are staying there, because mobile network connectivity is scarce to nil. Withdraw sufficient amount of money, because there are no ATMs in Pangot. Also, carry binoculars if you are interested in bird watching.

Carry light woollens, it gets a bit chilly in the nights and mornings, and is pleasant during the day.

Interesting Facts

This small hamlet, in a remote location in Himalaya, is home to over 150 species of birds. The surrounding forests are also home to sambar, leopard, barking deer and ghorals.

Although Pangot is a safe place to be, avoid going out after sunset, as the area is pitch dark after sundown.

If you would rather stay back and soak in warm sun, so be it! Pangot will not disappoint you any ways!

Asked Sadhguru JV, a revered Mystic of our current times and head of Isha Foundation as I stood-by to say Goodnight to him after a session of ‘In Conversation’ at Sirifort Auditorium in Delhi.

I immediately replied “Oh I would love to do Sadhguru”, without knowing what all it meant? And that every word of Sadhguru was going to be followed up.

I got a call from a Swami of Isha Foundation within weeks. Asking me if i was ready. I again said YES.

“Then please send us your passport and a medical checkup report and get a fitness certificate as we shall be climbing up-to over 17,500 feet of altitude”.

Next day, I got the checklist for the medical checkup. It was truly exhaustive! The trek-pilgrimage would demand 20 days.–Phew!

First time ever a long break for me!!

Of the kind which truly disconnects me from all the happenings back home. The only connection would be perhaps a satellite phone number with a contact based in Kathmandu, for emergency! Hence no news was good news as I thought.

I asked myself if I would be able to disconnect from my engaging and most enjoyable work schedule I work with for three long weeks? And without any contact of the kind I was so habitual of. ——-The news, print or the visual, the social networking, the blackberry, my home food and my home care, and so on.

I resolved I will disconnect this time. I will challenge myself and move on. I will test myself whether I can detach from the comfort zone and be myself differently?

I started to research on Mt Kailash, the Mansarover Lake, the route, the past trek feedback, the comments, the requirements, the narration on Utubes where past pilgrims had mounted their experiences for the benefit of fresher like me.

I was now getting ready to leave. I was learning to detach! I was equally excited! More so since the group was being led by Sadguru himself. This was a rare privilege.

I did not know where to get my trekking equipment from. I called up the Isha Foundation and asked for help. Swami Nakshatra identified the right Mall in Noida from where I could get all the trekking as one stop-shop.

I have never shopped like this as I did this time. I splurged. For me it’s a divine exploration! I was heading towards a revered destination.

I then had to pass a medical test to be declared fit. I blew into several balloons for Lung and vital tests. The doctor said I was in excellent shape!

Ha Ha. I passed it with Fist Division at the age of 65!

On Aug 6th, I was on the flight to Kathmandu to join the group. Sadhguru was on the same flight with few other Isha meditators co-passengers from around the world.

I was truly privileged. Before switching off my black berry I mailed and tweeted a photo of the big trekking shoes I was wearing as evidence to my family and 3 million friends on social network as evidence of my departure! (I was already a child at heart) saying you cannot say ‘new pinch’ as theses are really hard!

On the evening of our arrival in Kathmandu, we were blessed by Sadhguru.

He tied a thread of protection on the wrist of each one of us and gave us an introduction of the pilgrimage. Few of the team members were repeaters! Truly dedicated to the experience and hungry for more I presume!

We were briefed to follow instructions as Sadguru emphasized.

He said when on high altitude it’s more the attitude! And we need to be in right frames on both counts. (Mind and body)

Our trek route planned was Simikot to Darapani, to Kermi to Yalbang to Timkot. ( All in Nepal)

We entered China from Hilsa through the Friendship Bridge. (sorry not so friendly though as we had serious issues concerning our overseas pilgrims. Sadhguru had to seek the intervention of our Prime Minister, who was so gracious to connect with us).

We drove by road, with our group split, (half of them left behind, who joined us after a loss of 6 days) to Mansarover through Tibet.

From Mansarover Lake we drove a few Kilometers by road, thereafter a solid long trek to Mt Kailash of 34 Km covered within 24 hrs. Going and coming.

The first phase of our trek was treacherous! Somewhere a steep uphill and at other places a steep decline. All on rocks or loose pebbles. We used to trek almost 7-to 8 hours a day, with short breather breaks, before we could reach our halting night camps, all preferably by the side of running rivers.

The trek paths were breath taking.

But we were more focused on every step we were taking on the rocks. The lesson was: watch every step that you take! Even one step missed may be enough for a sprain or a fall!

Also as the altitude was rising we had to ensure we do not suffer from breathlessness or dehydration. We carried oxygen supplements. Few needed it. We also maintained silence to save our breath!

We used our walking sticks as legs to keep the balance. Some also held the hand of ‘bahadurs’ who were so sturdy and light footed. They were carrying our back- packs which had our rain wear, umbrellas, water and some eating stuff to munch and share on the way.

We would camp for the night in light tents. And sleep in our sleeping bags with aching feet, knees and legs. With no warm water to bathe, on the top of it the nights were freezing. And toilets a bit away. At night if one had to ease, it had to be under the stars and the moonlight with small head lamps on our foreheads. It was a unique experience. We were children again.

We of course had the luxury of hot food, as cooks and provisions were part of entourage! Thanks to donkeys and mares carrying our provisions.

With an overnight six hours sleep we were all always ready for the next day! It was an unbelievable discovery or recovery for many of us – non-Trekkers!

Just few mugs of water were so precious for brushing, washing and cleaning. Tissue paper, swipes and the disinfectants were our hygiene. No question of any hot water bath still. The courageous would go for cold water bath in the running streams wherever possible.

But we all meditated by the riversides. All Yoga trained! Hath Yoga emitting sounds of the birds as part of their learning.

We heard Sadhguru’s precious words of wisdom in the evenings, followed by questions and answers too.

I was a baby amongst them in such learning despite having done my Inner Engineering Course.

The trekking route we took will soon vanish as the Chinese are building roads all over. We walked over recently blasted rocks and soft tracks being prepared for driveways. Soon these will become motorable and lost for trekking. I am not sure whether this is to feel sad or happy! But we captured the route and the trek on camera for posterity. My Blackberry and the iPad became handy cameras to capture the terrain.

After six days of trek and few days of drive over tricky terrain somewhere very risky and at places smooth, we reached Mansarover Lake.

Highest lake on earth. And there were could see the majestic Mt. Kailash!

It left us all mesmerized!

Many burst out in tears!

We camped at the Lake. Dipped in its cold waters, prayed and thanked the spiritual souls believed to be part of nature around; we left for the trek to Mt Kailash!

We trekked for 17 KM almost nonstop for7-8 hrs. Most part of the trek Mt Kailash was with us in its spiritual splendor.

Sadhguru calls Mt Kailash the spiritual library of universe.

We drove back all through Tibet– and flew out of Lhasa, all through a nature gifted region getting modernized. Few years from now it will be a different place!

Lessons learnt on the pilgrimage:

To value all one has, pilgrimage combined with treks is the best self learning!

To dive inside oneself, such pilgrimages make it happen!

To build teams such pilgrimages naturally happen.

To stay fit, mind body soul such pilgrimages test oneself out. It’s yoga at work!

To stay human, such pilgrimages sensitive! One realizes the value of everything nature offers!

To love nature and feel the divine such pilgrimages inculcate the spirit for life!

Trekking into the lap of nature teaches mortality and interdependence!

No amount of book reading or listening teaches all this. It’s the doing which instills.

Best education for character building – nation building!

But if you’re planning to travel to gorgeous locations on your own, you have to keep certain points in mind. It might be fun to explore places alone without others attacking your every movie, but it need always be safe. Here are few things that you should not do…read on:

Checking-in at all times:
Yes, we know how much fun it is to tell your friends and families what you’re doing, every minute of the day. But that doesn’t mean that you constantly update your location to all and sundry. It can certainly make stalkers and other criminals to stake you out. Do you really want that? While uploading pictures are fun and cool, updating your location is not a great thing to do. If you’re on your own at a different location, country or continent.

Only plastic money:
One mistake all travellers make is to carry more plastic money than actual cash as they find it safer. Even though it’s safer, it does make you feel helpless when you have to hunt for an ATM in the middle of the night. It’s better to carry cash, split it and store it so you won’t lose everythinging, in case you get robbed. As most tourist spots want money than cards and cheques, it’s a good idea to carry change on you.

Couch-sharing options:
It’s a great way to learn about a country or city, when you couch-share or stay with a ‘host’ than spend on hotels and dorms. But these options are just not safe. It doesn’t matter if you’re girl or a boy, staying with strangers is not advisable in this day and age. Only if you know that person inside out and are sure that nobody else would be sharing the room with you, should you consider this option. Hotels are safer for single travellers, so you should opt for them.

Hooking-up with fellow travellers:
If you spot another single traveller, your instinct might urge you to befriend them, but that could be a big mistake. The reason you wanted to travel alone was to discover yourself and explore the world from your perspective rather than someone else’s. If you hook-up on the go, you might be made to travel according to their choices and wants. Moreover, it might not even be safe. Avoid.All.That. Keep your interactions minimal, friendly and casual.

When you’re travelling on your own the next time, do keep these thoughts in mind so you can engage without having to look over your back. Go ahead, have a great vacation!
