One of the popular movies released in 2007, that was famous for its storyline. Strange and unknown two meet each other and become good friends. Jargons – Bollywood movies are the spectacles-resting-on-the-bridge-of-nose teacher and we are wide eyed bemused students.

Whenever a new movie releases at the box office, it empties its bag and amasses new jargons, fashion goals, relationship goals, life goals etcetera. We always take cues from Bollywood movies, because, why not? They have deep bearing on shaping up the mind set of our youth and not to mention, affecting their youth discourse with equal merits.

Bollywood movies have, by a long chalk been the Pandora’s Box from which we could only expect surprises which became trends later.

However, here are a few jargons that Bollywood movies taught us:

1 – Fugly:

This word spread like wildfire when the Sonam Kapoor and Irrfan Khan starrer movie I Hate Love Stories released. Well, this may offend some people who detest body-shaming but in plain speak, Fugly is a combo of Fat and Ugly. This is a means to insult someone.

2 – Ye Baburao ka style hai:

It has become the buzzword among youth as soon as the movie Hera Pheri released. The movie brought the house down with its gags and Paresh Rawal was quite a sight to watch. Well, this dialogue was mouthed by Paresh Rawal himself who played Baburao in the movie.

3 – Love-guru:

It was from the Shahid Kapoor, Amrita Rao and Shehnaz Tyrewala starrer movie Ishq-Vishq which was quickly adapted by the young guns and everyone became the self-proclaimed love-guru solving relationship disorders.

4 – Ishh:

It is a famous Bengali jargon but the rest of the nation came to notice, rather adulate it when in the film Devdas, Paro showed off some Nakde with her Ishh!.. Every girl after then imagined her in the shoes of Paro trying to playfully admonish a handsome Devdas.

5 – No means No:

It is from a recent release Pink which taught us to stay firm on our negation no matter who is trying to pursue us from the other side. We have to make our own choices and deal with the consequences alone. This is what ‘No means No’ symbolized in the movie and we completely got our heads around it.

6 – Entertainment, entertainment, entertainment:

This one makes the scene from Dirty Picture pop in our mind where Vidya Balan mouthed this dialogue and it became the common swagger among youth at large after the film’s release.

7 – Ja Simran, jee le apni zindagi:

The landmark movie Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge had this dialogue which later becomes a fashion to ask someone to do whatever they liked.

8 – Mogambo Khush Hua:

When our stomach feels happy after a sumptuous meal, we so want to blurt out this dialogue from the movie Mr. India while burping, pretty apt, no?

Fairytales – The best part about fairy tales was that they always had happy endings, unlike the real life.

It was the parallel world which gave us dragons, beasts, fairies, princesses, princes, kings, warriors, castles and everything that swung open the floodgates of our imagination. And like Alice being lost in the wonderland, we took romantic escapes in the fairy tales if the reality seemed to be too trying.

As kids, we buried our face in those books and the rest of the world seemed to shut down, but no one is too old for fairy tales and we wholeheartedly want to see the screen versions of them.

Although Hollywood has tried its hands on it and gave us visual treats like ‘Beauty and the Beast’ not too long ago, we are rooting for some Bollywood movies too being made on these soul-stirring stories and here are our suggestions on the potential starcast:

1 – Beauty and the Beast:

This story is about the monstrous prince and the young beautiful woman who fall in love. The Hollywood version has stars like Emma Watson and Luke Evans but if it is ever made in Bollywood, we would like to see Sanjay Dutt in the beast’s role and Alia Bhatt in the Beauty’s.

2 – Cinderella:

Cinderella’s story has always been piercingly intimate to the little girl. How a girl marries her prince charming braving the hostile depravities is the subject matter of the story and we can’t think of anyone in Cinderella’s role but Parineeti Chopra for her girl-like bubbly nature and a pretty face.

3 – Aladdin:

Set in the Arabian backdrop, Aladdin is about the love between a commoner and a princess, Jasmine. Aladdin is blessed with a Genie who carries out his wishes at the drop of hat. We would sell our soul to see Hrithik Roshan play the masculine Aladdin, and Jacqueline Fernandez play Jasmine.

4 – The sleeping beauty:

This is a narrative about a beauteous princess who, having been cursed by an evil fairy, falls asleep for 100 years until a young prince comes and breaks her deep slumber by a kiss. The prince marries the princess and they have three children. He ascends the throne to become king flanked by his wife and three children. We figure, the best person who would fare the role of Sleeping Beauty is Sradhha Kapoor and Siddharth Malhotra will perfectly pull out the role of her prince charming.

5 – Rapunzel:

Rapunzel is a story about the beautiful girl who is imprisoned by the evil witch, Dame Gothel in her castle. The main draw about Rapunzel is her beautiful long golden clocks. One day A prince rides to the place and finds Rapunzel standing at the window, he instantly falls in love with her beauty so does Rapunzel. She then helps him to scale the long castle o by her long locks. We long to see Katrina Kaif play Rapunzel and Hrithik Roshan the prince.

We still seal the bonhomie of fairytales in our hearts and wait for the day when we will be old enough to revisit our fairytales again. Meanwhile, Bollywood directors can consider our suggestions.

Beauty standards for women – Women are always judged on the merits of their beauty and kept on the edge of testosterone.

Most of the girls from middle class households grew up in braces and bad hair-cut, then bang came Kuch Kuch Hota Hai with its assiduously crafted college and womanhood looks and we were shaken out of our reverie.

The hair-stylists were flooded with the ‘Kajol haircut’ requests and we spent our leisure trying to counterfeit Kajol’s saree wavering in the air act.

2 – Kuch Kuch Hota Hai:

Since it’s a benchmark movie to set beauty standards for women, we already elucidated you on this. The once Tomboyish Anjali is seen through by Rahul in all her college years although she was head over heels in love with him but he only falls in love with her when she wears make-up wtf! So apparently, a tomboy subscribes to the fashion standards once she is dolls up.

3 – Mujhse Dosti Karoge:

The below GIF speaks volumes, here’s how Hrithik’s character walks past an average Rani Mukherjee to woo the visually appealing Kareena Kapoor for whom any man will be ready to kill. This shows the grim reality of Indians fancying over fair complexion.

4 – Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani:

In the Kabeera song, Aditi is shown to have transformed into a girl from a Tomboy, the proverbial ‘Dulhan’ and in the other case, Naina steers clear of her glasses to catch her lover boy’s attention in the ‘Balam Pichkari’ song. So, that’s that.

5 – Student of the year:

Why on earth we didn’t understand Shanaya walks through the college corridor as if she is walking down the ramp? She has everything on point, ranging from her outfit to make-up. Now that leaves, the common women in cold sweat and confused that you missed out on a lot in your college life.

6 – Main Hoon Na:

Sanjana transforms into a beauty leaving Lucky jaw-dropped. Also, Miss Chandni, happy about her transformation arguably misleads a college kid.

Aisha:

This movie can be deemed a criminal to set up beauty standards for women. I mean what’s the reason behind stereotyping beauty which commands us to create some more Aishas? Shefali becomes a spitting image of Aisha for whatever reason we don’t know.

Hollywood movies adaption – Bollywood was always upfront about drawing inspiration from Hollywood movies, some they fared while some they malformed.

One thing for sure, Bollywood directors are well-versed of the benchmark Hollywood releases and have pen-paper readied always to take note. In rather brazenly moves, they copied the movies scene to scene only chanting the socio-cultural backdrop.

We will talk about here a few movies, presumably Hollywood movies adaption, we loathed.

Hollywood movies adaption –

1. Ek main aur ekk tu:

This film was directed by Shakun Batra and an adaptation of What Happened in Vegas starred by Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher. The English movie was a laughter riot freckled with right amount of emotions but in the Hindi version, we found no chemistry between the protagonist characters, forget relating to their life.

2. Manorama-Six feet under:

This Hindi movie was a remake of Roman Polanski’s Chinatown from the neo-noir genre. This Hindi version went closer to the masterpiece of Polanski but failed miserably at some points. We are not saying the Hindi remake was a dud, it had tight suspense and actors like Vinay Pathak, Abhay Deol, Raima Sen but we are still not as impressed.

3. Deewange:

Perhaps Anees Bazmee was kidding us, he could not even make a seasoned actor like Akshay Kumar match Richard Gere’s standards, we will pass the blame on the director because he could not exploit the actors although Ajay Devgn fared for the effortless actor he is.

4. Phir Milenge:

This movie was an adaptation of Jonathan Demme’s film Philadelphia which starred Tom Hanks as an HIV afflicted person. In the Hindi remake, Revathy changed the protagonist t a woman who gets fired by her employers but still didn’t match the eloquence level of Tom Hanks.

5. Josh:

Josh had a starcast of Shah Rukh Khan, Chandrachur Singh, Aishwarya Rai but was not as convincing as the Hollywood counterpart West Side Story. May be the over dramatic nuances that rained in their parade.

6. Baazigar:

This was adapted from another American neo-noir called A Kiss Before Dying which Abbas-Mastan adapted into a Bollywood Masala-flick which was a box-office success but a sheer injustice to the English version.

7. Sangharsh:

This crime thriller still unnerves us but the film it adapted the plot from was gripping to the point of madness, it is called Silence of the Lambs, you have perhaps heard of the movie. However, Ashutosh Rana was phenomenal in the movie but Priety Zinta failed miserably to match the brilliance of Jodie Foster. We are not impressed much!

8. We are family:

This was adapted from the English romantic-comedy Stepmom which lacked life. The film seemed out of bounds and no chemistry has been established within the characters expect Kajol had fared her share. All in all, this movie was not even close to Step Mom.

9. Mohabbatein:

It was the remake of Dead Poets Society which too was dipped in the Bollywood masala thereby failing to match the standards of the original movie. Amitabh Bachhan’s stringent character we loved but Shah Rukh Khan’s manoeuvrings to the students to break the status quo with dreamy notions about love and other not-grounded-on-reality standpoints did make us raise eyebrows!

These are Hollywood movies adaption – we brought forth the names that didn’t leave us awestruck as much but there are many competent remakes too we would urge you to watch.

Directed by Ram Gopal Verma, who is well thought of for dealing with the darker impulses of the paranormal world, had Revathi in the protagonist character. Revathi gets possessed by a ghost of the lady who was killed by her husband and vying for revenge. Revathi, thus embarks on a killing spree which spreads the horror. The well chronicled web of horror in the movie really made it different.

Darna Mana Hai:

Darna Mana Hai was directed by Ram Gopal Verma again where six different stories were tailored together with different casts that sparked the spook. The movie was inspired by the Campfire Tales (1997) and starred the likes of  Saif Ali Khan, Vivek Oberoi, Aftab Shivdasani, Shilpa Shetty, Sameera Reddy, Isha Koppikar, Nana Patekar, Sohail Khan. All of the stories are unnerving in their own measure.

Ek Thi Daayan:

Directed by Karan Iyer, this film was adapted from the short story Mobius Trips by Mukul Sharma. This film deals with witches, devil and everything unholy. We can’t go without mentioning Konkona Sen Sharma’s performance here who made us uneasy through only her expressions.

Ragini MMS:

Although it doesn’t have a significant star cast, but the Pawan Kripanani directed movie makes sure you can’t watch it alone. It is a story of a vengeful ghost who was killed by the villagers for allegedly being a witch, possesses a young girl’s body who came to spend a night with her boyfriend in a deserted Bunglow and matters worsen from then.

Bhoot:

The supernatural horror flick was directed by Ram Gopal Verma and starred Urmila Matondkar who later won lots of accolades for her performance in the film. The film’s depiction of how a woman becomes murderous after being possessed by a ghost was hair raising AF.

1920:

This movie was directed by Vikram Bhatt and dealt with the case of a married couple shifting in a haunted house in the year 1920 where the woman gets possessed by an evil ghost who was apparently killed for being seditious towards his country. This movie eldritch from every which angle and you definitely can’t miss it!

Vaastu Shashtra:

The film is directed by Ram Gopal Verma and is one of the benchmark horror films in Bollywood for its spook factor. The story revolves around a couple who bought a house in the Mumbai suburbs and decide the shift there where their little boy finds his imaginary friends who are actually ghosts.

Darna Zaroori Hai:

Darna Zaroori hai was a sequel of Darna Mana Hai with six fresh stories and updated star cast. Not to mention, it was equally frightening as the previous one.

Dostana (2008)

Getting a flat in Miami is no easy task, if you are a bachelor; so, they pretend to be a gay couple and eventually succeed in getting one. Later Kunal and Sameer fall in love with the landlady’s daughter, Neha Melwani (played by Priyanka Chopra), and then what follows is a series of events comprising of love, hate, betrayal, break-up (all with substantial comic twists). However, everything ends in a happy and peaceful note! Hail Bollywood!

Cocktail (2012)

The movie Cocktail is a classic tale of friendship, love and heartbreak. The plot revolves around Veronica D’Costa (played by Deepika Padukone), playboy Gautam Kapoor (Saif Ali Khan) and Meera (played by Diana Penty). The film shows the crazy and carefree lives of Veronica and Gautam, as they share a no-strings-attached relationship and continue to be friends. The trio share the same flat, eats, sleeps and hangs out together, as their friendship deepens.  It’s when Gautam’s mother visits him, things get a little too complicated. Gautam pretends to be in a relationship with Meera, while he continues to date Veronica. That follows breaks their relationship and friendship apart, until they go their separate ways. However, fate had some other plans for them; at the end, the movie makes you feel happy as Gautam marries Meera.

Zindagi Na Milegi Doobara (2011)

Friends! Road trips! Beautiful locales! Already sounds a winner, isn’t it? It’s a story of three best friends who set out on a three-week long bachelor trip to Spain. The film has all the elements of a typical entertainer. The movie explores various aspects of the lives of the characters and the impact all the events had on their respective lives. With an amazing cast and beautiful story, Zindagi Na Milegi Doobara is full of messages that would make you ponder. The use of symbolism is very apt and pretty well depicted as well.

Rang De Basanti (2006)

This was one of the landmark films to have come out of Bollywood. The director, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, succeeded in linking the Indian’s freedom struggle with the contemporary socio-political situation in the country. The film tells the story of a group of friends who decide to raise their voice against the Indian government for the injustice done to one of their friends. They choose to give their lives for their friend. The film has moved Indian audiences like never before, and left most in tears.

Dil Chahta Hai (2001)

Let’s end with the film that started it all. Dil Chahta Hai! It is an important film, in the context of Indian film industry. It broke a lot of taboos and created new rules for the industry. It’s a cool film, no doubt; and, importantly, it taught people to be cool. It celebrates friendship, love, riches, wealth and relationships. All of us can, still, identify with either one of Sidharth (Sid), Sameer or Akash. If not, we certainly have a friend who does. These three characters are so real. You can feel they exist.

Then I could also remember Ye Jawaani Hai Diwani, Fuqrey and a few more, that brought the craziness of bachelor life to some of most invigorating canvases.
