While our PM Narendra Modi started the journey from being a ‘chaiwala’ to a successful Chief Minister of Gujarat to being the country’s Prime Minister, we have Shahziad Ibrahimi who has taken the reverse circle by studying the Doctorate Programme from JNU and then opening a Dhaba outlet in the campus.

When the university departments and the teachers were infuriated that the dhaba from an alumnus of the university and a Ph.D. holder in the college premises might defile JNU’s reputation since all these years, Shahziad popularly known as Mamu among his friends maintained that he “will not ruin JNU’s name.” Detemined as he was an with his strong interest and aptitude in cooking, Mamu truly kept his word as Bihari Thali and Litti Chokha became the buzzword in JNU and even among the outsiders who visited the college, both young and old.

His obsession over onion and tomato salads which he likes to cut in a zigzag style and not the routine ‘chop chop’ increased the footfalls in the university. We would not be taken aback if we were to know that some students joined the university only to taste Mamu’s Dhaba’s special dishes daily!

However, life was certainly not a bed of roses for this PhD holder in Urdu and a Mass Communication graduate, when he decided to leave his job of a TV Journalist in Hyderabad to return to his second home, his ‘alma mater’ to pursue his cooking dreams in a dhaba. The permit to start a dhaba in the university was truly a tough nut to crack for him, where the university officials dared him to run the canteen for six months, then only will they accept his plea and you bet, they were forced to give him what he wanted – a place within the campus to operate his own canteen.

But the journey to carving your own niche somewhere in this big, wide world is not easy. Shahziad’s family back in Bihar could not accept that their son had opened a dhaba even after holding a Doctorate degree. His parents had terminated all contacts with him and it was only his brother who he was in talking terms with, among his family members. It took time for the sunny side to come up for Shahziad. But when it did, his parents were more than happy with Shahziad’s career decision when they visited his cafeteria, where he sometimes even gives food for free, irrespective of the religion or caste of the student, depending on whether they have money with them at the moment or not. Students would sit with their laptops and discuss politics for long hours here without any disturbance.

Shahziad’s experimentation with dishes is not the only thing that preoccupies his life and workplace, his notes ‘like chapters of a book’ and his recipe book called ‘365 days’ are certain other important things in his life currently.

Not only with his career, Shahziad experimented and followed his heart as far as his love life is concerned. He fell in love with a Hindu girl before completing his Master’s programme. His inter-religion relationship caused much turmoil back home and with the girl’s parents but anyhow they got married secretly in the campus and shifted their residences to the married students’ quarters in the campus. Not that we are vouching for any inter-caste marriages and secret weddings or opposing parents either, but we would still appreciate the daring attitude and the spirit to accept challenges and mould everything from tough times to happier moments in Shahziad and would hope that more of today’s youth can share the same spirit and attitude in life. In his own words, “There is no other place like JNU; there was something always pulling me back. I think I was always meant to be here, running this small dhaba.” (As reported to the Indian Express)

Of making food, Shahziad emphasizes on the different methods of cooking that make you special and of salary and jobs, he claims that he does not care whether he makes money or not, but loves the fact that he is his own boss and does not have to take orders, he loves his work and the fact that he does not give an explanation to anyone for being late to work. Like him, there might be many who do not like fixed jobs and feel it is still less for the company and the job even after giving one’s 100 percent, handling work pressure and deadlines. But how many of us would actually show the courage to do something we absolutely love and not consider any work too low or menial?

Even PM Modi liked to share his joy of swearing as the PM of the country with Shahziad by calling him at the ceremony.

If you wish to pursue your Masters in JNU, you would not want to miss out on tasting fine thalis and litti chokhas! Just ask a fellow passer-by in the campus about Mamu’s dhaba and s/he will be more than pleased to give you the directions!

As an investor in such companies, you can get to feel the experience both at a personal and a professional level as you get to be an effective contributor towards creating more jobs, promoting a better employment scenario, and offering hope to have a base for capital investments.

Though there are percentages and limits up to which you should invest, the first funding preference for any start-up companies is friends and family and acquaintances as well. So, lesser people look forward to professional investors.

However, there are many start-up companies that have done good with the help of an investor and incubation centres, be it Toppr (a start-up to help with entrance exams) or Instamojo (an e-commerce initiative). Also, with PM Modi’s plans to start 500 incubation centres to help micro, small and medium enterprises, the investing market is bound to grow exponentially.

Here are certain facts you must check – How to invest in start up companies

Research about the business owners

Since the company has not made its mark in the market yet, it is the people behind the company who are and who should be the most important factors behind deciding of or not to invest in the company. Consider researching the educational and work background of the company founders to know more about their skills, knowledge and how well they will be able to sustain themselves in the growing start-up market.

Invest in multiple and different start-up avenues

Even if one company you invest in does not make good, and you invest in diverse businesses, you will sooner or later gain success through one of these mediums. First-time investors need to understand which kind of companies do better and so cracking more than one deals is always helpful.

Find out which field interests you more and also its growing prospects before investing

Just as reading all documents carefully before investing is necessary, similarly knowing which particular domain will fetch more growth in the near future by studying other company’s growth rates and understanding the market scenario better is also something as essential. A field that you are already interested in and know that it can rise to greater heights as seen with past examples, can give you better money back guarantee.

Finding out more about the start-up market scenario

Know about the competitors of the company you are planning to invest in and also how the company is equipped to compete with its competitors or is it an edge above them. Also, researching whether the company you are investing it has a large enough market to sell its products and/or services as well as what the company primarily deals in and is concerned about should be your lookout. The client’s feedback is as necessary to know for you as it is for the company founders and employees themselves.

Scrutinizing how the company has made use or is making use of the funds it gets

You as an investor have all the authority to know the strategies of the company and its motives behind using the fund that it is raising through you. Also, take a note of the salary amount each employee gets and the owner himself/herself earns through this business. Before thinking of increasing or decreasing the amount of funding, you should make a count of how much the company would need to grow their business keeping apart the cost of the products/services and the salary amounts.

Check how legal the company is

Last but not the least, it is mandatory to check the company’s legal documents and all the agreements that the company has signed so far and with whom. Check if all the documents are authentic or make your lawyer check that, rather and know about the infrastructure and how many shares of the company you own according to the legal agreements.

Finding out whether or not the company is likely to pay all its debts and loans and the money you invest in them is your absolute right and duty as well. The company you invest in should have the potential to grow and be useful to the customers it claims to provide products/services for. It is better to take precautions beforehand rather than curing yourself for the loss later.

In fact, there is a saying that colleagues can never be friends. Besides, there are trust issues too. You never know who is plotting behind your back, making mountains out of molehills, leading your words through the rumour mill, leading your image astray.

Mostly, office friendships thrive on idle gossips, sharing food, catching up for parties, covering each other’s shifts. These professional friendships have an enriching effect on our life and make the day at work less stressful.

However, in this bitter sweet symphony of professional life friendship, one needs to maintain the balance.

Friendship in the workplace –

1. Try and avoid the gossip:

This is the thumb rule of making friendships prosper at the workplace. You need to steer clear of the idle gossip that hovers in the office. If it starts with gossiping, then don’t expect it to stretch too far.

2. Try and be kind to all:

You may nurture a bias towards some colleagues but don’t let the other lot figure out your inclination. You need to be in talking terms with everyone, especially when you are given a group task, act normally so that others don’t get the idea that you dislike them deliberately.

3. Don’t be too partial:

There are always shortcomings of being friends with the office colleagues. You need to be straightforward but not rude. You should not let your personal problems influence your administrative decisions. We tend to take wrong decisions under bias which is not advisable.

4. Don’t spend too much time on trying to please others:

If you spend too much time trying to please them, you will end up in self-doubt. No one is a saint so judge everyone before proceeding. You may gel well with someone at work but only spending balanced amount of time is advisable.

5. Be a little secretive:

There should be a thin line between sharing and oversharing. This is a skill that you should master in order not make a laughing stock of yourself in the office. No matter how close to the person you are, you should be sharing limited amount of information regarding your lives and also make sure both are doing that in equal measure. Suppose, you are aware of some piece of information that might tarnish someone else’s image, you should be tight-lipped about it to the other colleagues whom you supposedly think your friend.

6. Weigh their movies:

You should judge people a lot to get your head around their motives. May be the benevolence they show is their way of exhausting some information out of you. Steer clear of these kinds of friendships.

7. Your boundaries should not be blurry:

If you are too friendly with a colleague, you will not be able to be upfront about her errors. You need to draw the line before digging too deep in the friendship otherwise there will be ample room for misunderstandings.

These are the ways to handle friendship in the workplace – So, these are the ways you can make friends in the office space and yet manage a good professional image.

She also lives in a well-furnished apartment in Velachery and has around 200 people working in her renowned restaurant.

But, as they say nothing comes easy in life.

And, even if it comes there are many twists and turns that mould our very life. Well, even Patricia Narayan went through her life lessons that made her today a proud independent lady.

Today, she is one of the brave ladies that stands tall and inspires others as well.

Let’s take a look back in her life…

From Patricia Thomas to Patricia Narayan

Patricia was studying in Queen Mary’s when she met a Brahmin boy Narayan. Well, they both fell in love with each other and decided to get married “secretly”. But, things turned bad and she had to tell her parents about her secret marriage which made the couple break ties with their family.

Trouble in paradise

Patricia was happily married to Narayan but things shattered and turned worse for Patricia. She found out her husband was heavily into taking drugs and alcohol and it was difficult to get him out of this situation.

In her struggling life she became pregnant but certainly had no money to meet ends. At 18 she was left out with her two children.

It all started with 50 paise

She started her own cart on Marine Drive, Mumbai. This was her start, 31 years ago, she earned only “50 paise” on her first day by selling a cup of coffee. She felt disheartened but worked the next day as well. The next day went off good and she also started selling sandwiches, ice-creams and juices.

Patricia Narayan’s work life

Patricia Narayan never gave up in her life and stood firm in front of all the hurdles. She took up many odd jobs that included catering at the Slum Clearance road where she served 300 people at Bank of Madurai canteen and later she started serving almost 700 students daily at National Port Management training school.

You know what’s interesting?

By working at Marina and school canteen she earned around 1 lakh per week. Isn’t that great?

Another big shocker in Patricia’s life

Right when she was taking the steps towards success, the news of Patricia’s newlywed daughter and son-in-law’s death broke her. It was back then in 2004 that gave her the sad news of her life. She took some time off and gave the business in hands of her son Praveen.

Sandeepa Chain of Restaurant

Patricia’s son started the first restaurant called “Sandeepa Chain of Restaurant”. Patricia came back 2 years later to start the business along with her son Praveen and the restaurant was named after her daughter’s name.

There are now around 200 employees working today in the restaurant.

FICCI Woman Entrepreneur Award 2010

In 2010, Patricia was the proud winner of (Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry) FICCI Woman Entrepreneur Award 2010.

14 outlets of Sandeepa

Yes, you heard it right. This woman who faced extreme challenges in life but never backed out. Now, there are total 14 outlets across Chennai that provides her daily income of rupees 2 lakhs.

Along with her well furnished house, she also owns her own luxury car. She is the true example of how being strong and determined can make you achieve what you want no matter how many hurdles you face.

And such person is Sylvester Stallone who is one of the most renowned American super stars. He may be a known name to reckon with but only few people know how hard he worked and how he removed all the stumbling blocks to his road to riches.

Back then he was a struggling actor in every sense as he was struggling to even feed himself and his family. He was so broke that he had to steal his wife’s jewelry to sell it off. Problem after problem pressed on and in one point, he even became homeless.

Nothing to eat and no shed to cover his head, He had no option but to sleep at Port Authority bus station for almost three weeks until he was cast in a pornographic movie. He hit his lowest point of life when he sold off his dog at a liquor store as he didn’t have a penny to feed his dog.

Sylvester, whose heart and body is strong as iron, walked away crying with 25 Dollars in his hand.He always wanted to be actor and gave several auditions but he never got selected so he turned to writing as waited for his acting career to blossom.

One day he saw a boxing match between Mohammed Ali and Chuck Wepner and that match ignited inspiration to write the script for the block buster movie Rocky.

As soon as he finished the script he went ahead to sell it but faced enormous numbers of rejections.

After months and months of trying he got an offer of $125,000 which was also on way to get rejected due to Sylvester’s request. He requested that he will play the main lead of Rocky.

The studio said no as they wanted a star.

The amount of offers was rising but he said no to all of them as he wanted to act in them.

Finally, he settled with a studio which offered a just $35,000 for the script and allowed him to act in the movie.

And the rest is history.

The movie won all the prestigious awards including Oscars. His breakthrough movie was inducted into American National Film Registry. The first thing he bought after getting that $35,000 was his Dog. He went to the liquor shop and waited for the man he sold his dog to. He finally met the man and explained him why he had to sell the dog.

But the man refused, Stallone was stubborn to get his dog and offered $1000 but still he refused. Finally he paid $15,000 for the dog. And now today, he is worth more than $275 million. The story of Sylvester Stallone is indeed an inspirational tale of dedication and perseverance.

Like him we too all have dreams but what is more important is that we should work on it and chase it till you accomplish it.

It’s true that it’s not that easy to be successful but not impossible too.

Thomas Corley, the author of Rich Habits: The daily success habits of wealthy individuals, documented lives of both rich as well as poor people and understood their activities. He concluded that it is the daily habits that are the reason for your wealth or poverty.

He said, “These habits are like snowflakes – they build up, and then you have an avalanche of success.”

And he also said one more thing that those who are not born wealthy have greater chances of becoming financially successful.

This is great revelation as recently there were reports that suggested how 62 people in the world possess half of the world’s wealth. This gap is huge and this is big problem to tackle.

After learning this thing it’s better to buck up ourselves and work hard so this disparity goes down. If cynics think that this is impossible then fyi these wealthy people have not inherited wealth but are self-made.

So it is important to shun all excuses and get started.

Those are still wondering what make wealthy people wealthier then scroll down below to know some factors which make them stand out from the rest of the world.

They set goals and achieve them

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail and this line is taken seriously by rich people. They make sure that they plan out everything in writing- short as well as long term goals. Average people just wish but rich people set goals- achievable goals.

They have daily to do lists.

Average people do not set goals or maintain even to do lists unlike wealthy people. Rich people also have daily to-do lists and these people even complete 70% or more of those listed tasks of particular day.

They take care of themselves

As per one of the researches, wealthy people eat and drink healthier in comparison to poor. They make sure that they get up early, spare time for exercise and workouts and opt for nutritional food.

They spend less and invest more.

Many people do not know that rich people are rich because they are frugal and not indulgent as we think. Mark Zuckerberg still uses drives a Volkswagen GTI and Google founder Sergey Brin still shops at CostCo.

They do not waste time doing gossiping or watching TV

They will hardly be seen in front of idiot box (TV) and gossiping about how their neighbours treated them in party or so. They make sure they have good habits (like reading or watching only informative content) as that will eventually help them in long run.

They take risk, they fail but they know how to tackle problems

It’s not like that every billionaire made it success in one shot. They strive hard, fail but never give up. For them this is an experience to learn from not like poor who label failure as bad luck and quit trying.

They believe in learning every day.

It’s vital for all of us to learn something every day. Rich people try and learn everyday new things and believe in self-improvement as this will eventually help them to grow and their venture as well. But many think that after their formal studies they should just bid good bye to books or learning.

They go beyond their work.

Poor people remain poor as they think “it’s not in my job description” so why should I do.

They talk less and listen more.

Wealthy people are good communicators as they first listen and then they say. they give importance to learning from the other person.

From this post you might have come across how rich people just do things differently and do not do different things.

They are just like us and any one (if they want to) can be rich.

This program is aimed at financing for start-up ventures and offer incentives to boost entrepreneurship and job creation.

The action plan of this campaign will be unveiled on 16 January 2016.

As per PM Modi this campaign will bring a big opportunity for young people across the country not only in manufacturing and service sector but also in small scale and agriculture.

He also said the programme will be designed as per Indian conditions and focus would be on ensuring benefits for the youth from the lowest strata of the society. The initiative will be connected with IITs, IIMs, central universities and NITs as well.

Below are some important pointers related to the campaign :

What Will Be The Benefits For The Young And Budding Entrepreneurs?

These benefits will be in the form of a reduction in the excess of compliances that is needed to set up business, immediate approvals, easier finance and tax break.

Who Will Get A Chance?

Entrepreneurs who have innovative ideas and have unique product are eligible for the benefits.

If some youth develops something which is innovative and can help masses or make a poor laborer’s life comfortable then he would ask financial institutions to help such people.

There will be a panel to decide which start up will be given the facilities and there would be an inter-ministerial body to oversee proposals.

This campaign is for all and not just for city’s youth.

PM Modi said that youth with capabilities are all over India and it will be wrong to say that they can be found in cities only. And that’s why this program will not limited to few cities or places but aims to make it Pan India.

He added, “Youth in every corner of India have talent, they only need opportunity. This ‘Start up India, Stand up India’ should not be limited to a few cities. It should reach every corner of India,”

This Project Will Be Help Differently-abled Entrepreneurs Too.

During the latest Man Ki Baat program he mentioned that initiative is also for disabled people. He has coined new term called “Divyang” which means people with extra ordinary skills

He believed that most of the times it has been seen that differently- abled people have great capabilities than normal people.

Also Eyeing To Aid Adivasis/Dalits/Women Entrepreneurs As Well.

PM Modi also mentioned in the speech that “Start-Up India” initiative will also encourage atat least one Dalit or Adivasi entrepreneur, and at least one woman entrepreneur and each of 1.25 lakh bank branches for the same will aid them.

This initiative is not confined to tech and IT but spreads to other sectors as well.

As per Modi, this initiative will be about IT or digital world but any innovation by commoner will be assisted to start their venture.

Right now India is among five largest start-up communities in the world and these start ups have created more than 80,000 jobs in India, as per NASSCOM.

We think that his proposition will boost entrepreneurship and job creation and can make India Start Up Capital in the world.

But we would also like to hear your views and suggestions on this imitative? What are your expectations?

Will this campaign help India to be number one Start up Nation? Will it actually help entrepreneurship and job opportunities?

Let us know your comments below.

They are demanding newer avenues. They are asking for more and more.

The usual, eating business may have the nerve of youth with various urban pubs and restaurants, but with the rising imbalance in the nation’s economy, it is becoming challenging for the youth too, to maintain the kind of lifestyle they want.

Sophisticated, happening, youthful, modern and upbeat, and yet low cost eateries are the need of the hour for the youth today.

Yet, there are many factors enveloping the idea of a successful eatery.

We all know that, with the rise in lifestyle choices, Competition is fierce in the restaurant business. Making a small restaurant profitable amid an economic downturn and national decline in dining out is a challenge. Even for a small eatery, creating efficiencies in the operations, marketing and management are the keys to generating revenue. Profitable small eatery owners asses their businesses frequently, then implement strategies to continually drive downs costs and increase customer satisfaction.

Here are 5 imperative factors that affect the food business for small eatery for genX and how one can control them, if they want to make it a good business idea:

Streamlining The Operations

It is important to streamline the operations if you really want to make it a profitable business. Overhead expenses like food, supplies and payroll must be evaluated weekly to ensure maximum output and minimum waste. Also, the point to be noted is that the first-in-first-out, or FIFO, system cuts the cost of perishable goods by using a rotation system in which older food is used first to curb waste. A closely monitored payroll helps plan staffing needs and reduces costs by eliminating unnecessary work hours. Keeping track of profit and loss through accurate accounting is paramount to operational success. Successful owners access their performance trends regularly, making necessary changes to generate profit. If you wish to own and run a profit making eatery for GenX, make sure you comply with this.

Her journey from farm laborer to IT millionaire is commendable and that’s why today we are shedding light on the inspiring rags-to-riches story of Jyothi Reddy.

Early Life And Struggles

Due to financial problems, she was sent to an orphanage even though she had parents. And by the age of 16, she was forced to get married. She used to toil hard on fields to earn a meager wage of Rs. 5 that could hardly make ends meet. Her fate took many ugly turns since she was born.

But all pressing problems and poor living never stopped her to dream big. She aspired to have a good standard of living and wanted to give her two daughters best life.

In pursuit of high living, she did odd jobs from stitching petticoats to do jobs which required her to travel miles and miles. But still, such problems never ever deterred her.

How She Strived Hard To Carve A Niche Of Her Own

She overcame all the obstacles by working harder and harder. She joined the open school to educate her and soon she got a better job as instructor- invigilator. Her life took a turn for better when she met her the US returned cousin sister.

She was flattered by her lifestyle and asked her what she can do to achieve the same. Later with the help of her sister, she joined software learning classes and also applied for the visa for the USA and since then there was no looking back.

She didn’t fly to the USA; she flew to achieve her ambition. Finally, she achieved her dream she is head of one of the software companies in the USA.

Are you an entrepreneur?

Do you have expansion plans?

Do you see overseas grounds as your potential business-playgrounds?

Is there something which is stopping you from setting up shop across the globe and beginning a plan for world sales domination?

If you have answered all the above questions in an affirmative, then you must read on, because by the end of this article, you will have your answers, at least I can hope so.

Well, today, in the era of ever increasing demands and flourishing markets, globalization is one of the most sane decisions for the businesses to undergo. For ever-present multinational corporations, entrepreneurial initiatives, single level startups or any other trade, this is the time to score on the opportunities being offered on the global commerce plate. Since, there are so many who did not flourish, only for the reason that they failed to capture an audience in the international markets.

Today small businesses as well as large corporations can reap the benefits of expanding operations into overseas markets.

Here are substantial reasons for the entrepreneurs to expand your business Overseas markets to reap the utmost returns.

Many Markets Remain Untapped For Various Businesses

If you are running a business that offers products or services that are not available in certain parts of the world, yet are in high demand. By expanding your operation into these markets, you can establish a new base of eager customers without the immediate threat of competition. The government of that nation may make things a little easier for you by offering certain incentives for setting up a business operation, simply for the reason that you are offering something new, and something which is imperative. You will also be providing a boost to the nation’s economy and bridging two nations on commercial grounds. And come to think of it, you may also, create some employment opportunities in the country. Make sure you make a research on the business grounds and choose your destination sensibly.

Favourable Business Climates Must Be Explored

Once you explore, you might become aware that another country might be offering more favourable economic conditions than your home country, and better returns too. When recession or the implementation of restrictive government policies make turning a profit more difficult, expanding into an area that doesn’t currently pose these challenges can offer a more lucrative alternative. A new nation may offer an economic climate that is more “business-friendly,” offering advantages such as lower taxation or fewer environmental regulations.

Greater Exposure Brings Greater Benefits and Returns

It goes without saying that overseas expansion of entrepreneurial businesses, increases the exposure to the business, helping them to create a larger “global footprint”. Which, of course, in turn, builds a better brand for the business, bring escalated recognition and larger profits, thereof. This, also, will facilitate even greater expansion in the future. For the experiences once gained, are never a waste when it’s about business. You also can attain greater respect from customers and potential business partners in the domestic market, as they may now view you as a bigger player in your industry.

Business Rejuvenation Happens Instantly

Well, lastly, I would like to add, that In addition to all the up-sides that an overseas expansion has to offer to a a thriving business, entering overseas markets, holds a lot of potential to help revive a struggling enterprise. For instance, businesses operating in a saturated market, or experiencing a shrinking market share can definitely find newer vistas for their products and services in an untapped country. Moreover, if your business is suffering dead-end due to short supplies of certain amenities or manpower, you have chances to find those in a different country altogether. Again, putting a thorough research, before choosing the destination will help a great deal.

Being an entrepreneur and a business person myself, I am exploring the options of spreading my wings in the countries that can offer me productive grounds to set-up my anchors. And hence, the little informative that I shared here.

It’s how, when and how we bring those ideas to surface, and what matters the most is, who has the will and conviction to bring them to the surface!

This is the story of one such guy who happens to be a 23 years old entrepreneur with a hefty tag of CEO to DataWallet to his name. Yes, I am talking about German-born Serafin Lion Engel, the founder of a pathbreaking digital idea called DataWallet!

No matter how less we are aware of it, but digital companies collect our data from various devices that we use for daily activities every day. Be it browsing the net, signing for newsletters, filling forms for ecommerce sites, or simply signing up for social media. Every bit of data is useful to people looking to build businesses out in the whole wide world.

Serafin, with the brilliant brain that he has, came with the idea to give the data control to the users, while very interestingly putting money back in their pockets too! And guess what, he got a billionaire to invest in his this brilliantly stimulating project.

The Idea

Serafin discovered the idea for his start-up after he dropped out of college to follow his entrepreneurial pursuits. He was lucky enough to catch the attention of billionaire Tim Draper, who asked him to get enrolled to Draper University, which is a popular business school for entrepreneurs, run by entrepreneurs. Serafin was awarded scholarship to attend this university. Some lad he is!

What Is So Different With The Draper University

Serafin, gives credit to Draper for many good reasons. The curriculum at Draper differed from that of a traditional learning institution. Students are taught how to be comfortable outside of their comfort zones and told to go big or go home. In college, students are expected to get everything right, but at Draper, students are rewarded points for failing dramatically. Can you imagine that? Don’t you think we need such schools in India too?

The crux of the matter is, that at Draper Universi are motivated to try out outrageous things and move out of their comfort zones. Which in self is a big lesson for life. And adapting this lesson in life, makes one strive to go as big as possible. Such schools work on changing the personalities, the minds, and the thought processes of the students, and not just the academic qualification status.

Serafin’s Course of Action That Lead Him To Success

Serafin was a regular college going student until he realised he was made for something different. He was pursuing his degree in business administration at the Rotterdam College of Management in the Netherlands, when he decided to take a deviation. He then set off to follow his entrepreneurial dreams at a very young age of less than 21.

On this he has a word of wisdom to share with his young counterparts from the entire world over. He says

“To be honest, I think a lot of people are seriously over-estimating the benefit of dropping out of college. I think you need to have a very, very clear case why you should; dropping out of college is no predetermined way to success. You need to have a very real contingent and super realistic opportunity. Unless you do, I would highly recommend not doing it.”

The Target and The Difficult Road To It

Serafin was quite confident that entrepreneurial road is for him to walk, but he was not having any map to it. Neither the skills, the required knowledge or any support system per se, which an inevitable part of many entrepreneurs. As Serafin puts it, he did not know the meaning of the word “entrepreneur” until he was 20. He sold strawberries on the road, which he plucked from his backyard garden. He did not know at that time that he was setting up a business. He was smart enough to know the reasons behind low sales, that the sign that he had put up is not legible to people, because he could not write properly. Entrepreneur was in him at the age of 4.

“I honestly did not know the term ‘entrepreneur’ until I was 20. It came to me intuitively. It started with small things. When I was 4, I started selling strawberries from the back of our yard on the street. I would get super upset when nobody would buy them, only to come figure out that no one could read the sign. I could not even write properly yet.

Today, as the DataWallet Founder and CEO reveals, he conceived this bigshot idea just five days before he enrolled for a program at Draper.

His girlfriend at that time was studying fashion and she and her friends were the epitome of trendsetters. They would always try to figure out what was trending amongst kids: what are they doing, what are they buying, what are they talking about. At the same time, those kids were constantly broke. I thought to myself, how could you potentially fix this? It occurred to him that all this consumption is in their data — whatever they talk about on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Amazon, etc. If brands could look at the data and see what they are talking about and what they are consuming and those kids could get paid for that type of insight.

And there was THE IDEA!

Serafin then pitched this big idea to a panel of 40 venture capitalists and won first place in the Pitch Day competition! That’s what you call a clean sweep!

Having The Billionaire Tim Draper As Project Investor

Serafin identifies with Draper as a very close mentor and guide. He gives him all the credit for his handy business advices, introductions in the business world. Serafin says, “Tim is one those guys who is really able to look ahead of the curve. I’m constantly surprised by how much he is able to say about the product; I’m trying to break it down for him and not go too far into the vision and he actually takes it further; he is truly incredible.” We need more such visionaries in our country too, who are able to identify the real talent and don’t think twice before invesing in them.

One of the reasons he ended up believing in Serafin and his project was because he failed with a startup before. Yet, he still remained at it and constantly tried to push and not give up. This is definitely one of the qualities that Tim saw and which garnered his interest further, in Serafin. He knew that the lad was able to go through the struggle.

This is where I think most young entrepreneurs start flaking when they see things falling apart.

Serafin reckons, that he had literally put all of my savings from the last 20 years into my company and paid every employee out of his pocket. It was an incredibly rough time and he believes that Tim saw that and also knew that that would help him to grow as a mature businessman.

What is DataWallet?

DataWallet is a huge and potential application platform that makes the owner of his own data, and its seller too. The data that we create online, automatically allows the companies to use it. Data is a huge market as individuals create roughly 5GB of data everyday from sites and apps like Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, Uber and Spotify.

In 2012, the Senate Committee on Commerce and Transportation estimated the global revenue of the data market to exceed $150 billion per year. Serafin and his team estimate that number to be around $340 billion per year in 2015. He explains that companies are already taking advantage of our data and selling it without us knowing who is sourcing the data, what they sell, who they sell it to and for what purpose. On top of that, we’re not getting paid for the data we generate.

The benefits of Serafins Datawallet

Serafin’s DataWallet app gives 100% of the payouts to the users against their data, as it does not keep any cut. The platform makes the process transparent and gives users control over monetizing an asset they already own. The data will also help companies create, build and tailor products around the needs of the people.

Competitors that DataWallet is up against are established multi-billion-dollar data companies that include Axiom, Epsilon and Equifax. Whereas DataWallet’s edge and its primary emphasis is on the users’ experience. While other companies focus on business to business cross-sharing data, DataWallet puts users first and that is what makes it an instant hit.

Serafin also adds on to the uses when he says that the company is determined to bring in more incentives and payoffs for most active users, something like a travel trip, the DataWallet lifestyle — going to Miami and riding water Jetpacks, going on a safari or going on a helicopter tour over Miami. We will have a really awesome trip planned so they will really know what the DataWallet experience is all about.

The Journey and The looking Back

Even with such incredible resources and support from billionaire Tim Draper, Draper University’s founder, Serafin did not realize his success until he experienced failures and defeats.

It takes a lot of courage and will to look at the learning aspect of failures and make good use of it. One has to maintain a positive approach and a “no failure is a failure if it gets you learning” attitude!

Serafin’s word for all the young and roaring entrepreneurs out there “Without a doubt, you need to be a little bit delusional. All entrepreneurs are a bit delusional; it is the premise for founding a company when all the odds are stacked against you big time.”

So, here’s the story of success for you, of a 23 year old young business mogul, who runs a profitable company today.

Inspired?

As the saying goes- Necessity is the mother of invention; many villagers not only overcame these difficulties but also invented products which have changed many lives.Yes, the brighter side of rural India is that it is a hotbed for several innovations.

Today we have compiled some of the best and unique inventions by Indian villagers that prove how ordinary people are capable enough for extra ordinary things.
