So, FIFA World Cup is round the corner and Russia is rolling up the sleeves for welcoming the teams and fans. The 32 competing nations are now updated about their opponents in the group stage of the tournament.

64 matches are slated to be held in 12 stadiums in Russia.

There are five arenas that are already being set up. The name of the stadiums are Spartak Stadium in Moscow, the Fisht stadium in Sochi, the Kazan arena and the Saint Petersburg Stadium. All of these stadiums have lately hosted FIFA Confederation Cup 2017 in June and July of this year. However, the main venue of 2018 FIFA World Cup is Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium where the both the opening match and the final will be held. This is recently reopened and being remodelled to host a friendly match between Russia and Argentina.

Preparations of FIFA World Cup are in full swing at the seven other stadiums too where the stadiums will house scores of visitors from around the world.

The first match:

It will be held between Croatia and Nigeria whose venue Kalinigrad Stadium is 90 percent complete. The metal structure shell of the stadium has been nicely structured and weighs more than 15,000 tonnes. The decoration is underway and seats are being fitted in the stands.

2. The second match:

The second match will be held between Tunisia and England on 18^th June at Volgograd Arena. The pitch is being built anew and the turf was even readied before the winter months. At the entrances of the stadium, coloured windows are being installed, in the stands, seats are being put and protective barriers are being raised around them too.

3. The third match:

This stadium which is likely to host the France and Peru match is called Ekaterinburg Arena. The match will be held on 21^st June and the stadium is 98 percent complete so far. There are new lightening system, multi-media façade are being installed and the cultural heritage is being restored.

4. The fourth match:

The fourth match will be held between Sweden and Korea Republic on 19^th June in the Mordovia Arena stadium which is laying new foundations on the pitch and planting new grass surfaces. The roof, façade and temporary stands of the stadium are being reconstructed too.

5. The fifth match:

It will be held between Brazil and Switzerland on 17^th June in the Rostoz Arena whose roofs, lifts and escalators are being rebuilt. Work is going on the doors as well. The exterior of the stadium is being redeveloped too.

6. The sixth match:

The sixth match will be held on Samara Arena on 17^th June between Costa Rica and Serbia. The roof is being honed and decorations are going on too, mostly in the façade and internal facilities. Work on the pitch is going on too.

The Egypt football riot that erupted at the Cairo stadium is said to be the worst since the sports violence that took place back in 2012. 74 people were killed in 2012 before the batch between Egyptian Premier League clubs ENPPI and Zamalek.

Since the violence took place yesterday even before the match began, the local government decided to postpone the Premier League indeterminately.

When reporters spoke with the police, they claimed the supporters belonged to the Ultra White Knights, which is a hard-core fan group of Zalamek football.

Aware that the situation could escalate, the police fired tear gas at the angry fans. One of the witnesses present at the scene had this to say, “We were inside the stadium when the clashes began outside. There was a police car on fire and they were shooting birdshot and tear gas.”

The commotion sent the people running helter-skelter, not caring for one another, which resulted in at least 25 people getting injured. Local news agency MENA said that most of the injured suffered from either bruising or broken bones.

Ultra White Knights, otherwise simply known as Ultras, are infamous for clashing with the police regularly during football matches. People claim that the group is deeply politicised.

As per reports, scuffle broke even outside the Cairo morgue where beloved ones of the dead arrived to identify them.

In a statement, the government said, “Because of these sad events it has been decided to postpone the league to a time that will be decided later”.

The Italian football league Serie A club AC Milan has signed Chelsea and Spanish striker Fernando Torres on a permanent basis.

The striker is set to officially join as part of the team on January 5, 2015.

Initially, the Spanish footballer was moved to the Italian club on a two-year deal in August 2014. He made his debut for AC Milan on September 20, 2014 against Juventus. Two days later, he scored his first goal for Milan against Empoli, a match that ended in a draw.

Now, it has been announced that he will be part of the team on a full-time basis.

Israel Torres, the Spaniard’s brother, has spoken with several media sources claiming that the striker is very happy and excited to be joining the Serie A team. He is also thrilled about making his return to Atlético where he featured exclusively before his transfer to Liverpool in 2007.

In 2011, Torres was bought by the English Premier League team Chelsea for an undisclosed fee, which was anticipated as being £50 million. The purchase set a record with British transfer history, in the process making him one of the most expensive footballers of the modern era.

It’s official: Former Arsenal and French striker Thierry Henry announced his retirement from all forms of football.

In his career, spanning 20 years, the 37-year-old has been part of the World Cup winning French team in 1998 and Arsenal’s leading goal scorer.

Apart from the London-based club, he has also represented other teams such as Monaco, Juventus and Barcelona and New York Red Bulls.

Henry is also the fourth highest goal scorer in the game’s history.

While playing for New York Red Bulls, speculations were rife of Henry returning to the club as either a player or a part of the staff alongside the club’s coach Arsène Wenger.

The legendary French player has let the world know about his affection towards Arsenal. When Sky Sports asked him about another stint at Emirates, he responded with, “You kind of never leave Arsenal.”
