Remember when your lectures used to start during the second half of the day? It would be around four in the afternoon, and attending the last lecture of the day, the only thought ton everyone’s mind would be food, food and only food. The source? Either the college canteen or a small shop at the nukkad that serves lip smacking samosa and vada pao. I still remember the time when I used to fantasise about hot, crispy samosa during my lectures.

Flashback…

Start of September, drizzles outside, water droplets on the window pane. Calculator in one hand and pen in the other, I was drowsily staring at the board. The professor went on to make us solve problems, which more than half of us had no clue about. And all I can think of is whether Bhaiyaji had started frying the samosas.

Whoosh and bang! There is a samosa right in front of you. Now how did that happen! Thanks to the guy who was so concerned about the people around him that he stashed some samosas in his bag for us.

I know many of you would be smiling while reading this, but try having a samosa or vada pao during an ongoing class. ‘Course you’ve done it all. But for those, who haven’t tried it, let me tell you that your food will taste much more savouring when you have it in the class. (winks and smiles)

Now, did you not just love the moment when another faculty walked in and your lecturer takes a break for a minute or two. Doesn’t matter how drowsy were you feeling just a moment back. You seize the opportunity and the food gets circulated in the other two benches. And you are no longer sleepy. Your ebergy levels have boosted up and you’e ready to take the professor down all by yourself. (laughs)

These are one of the fond memories of college life, the prerequisites to stay awake and solve problems in lectures. The lectures, the samosas and the samosa in the lecture- I wish this had continued for a lifetime.

Maggi is not only the ultimate-resort- food, but also something that all the hostelers could unite for.

Most of you would agree with me on this. You have tried experimenting your culinary skills in making maggi with a twist. Have you not? When bored or completing assignment during odd hours, you’d just step into kitchen and think of all the weird things you could add upto maggi to make it all the more, killer (wink). Not sure if your so called dish turned out to be great, but meri timepass wali Maggi turned out to be good. To make your Maggi more interesting try these…

Maggi Cutlet:

Take two slices of bread. Dip in water for 3-4 minutes. While the slices get soaked in water, prepare maggi in a saucepan, like you’d do normally. Next, take the water soaked slices, an apt amount of maggi to stuff and bind it tightly within. Make sure not to put too much of stress on the slices. Deep fry in a vessel or if you’re health conscious, bake in an oven. Serve with ketchup.

Maggi Subway:

Cook maggi and keep aside. Take a subway bread. You could also use normal bread slices, incase you don’t have subway. Slice veggies of your choice. I like to add cucumber, tomato, onion and jalapenos to mine. Slice the sub lengthwise, stuff the veggies, and maggi, and add choices and toppings of your choice. Serve.

Poha Maggi:

Crush 2 packs of Maggi Atta noodles before opening the pack. Cook till all the water is absorbed. Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds(optional), peanuts(optional), tomatoes, onions. Cook till golden brown. Add chopped boiled potatoes, green chillies and peas. Add the noodles. Simmer for five minutes. Serve hot with chutney.

Go ahead and try out your combinations with Maggi. Add in any leftover from your fidge, Do let us know about your favourite Maggi recipe. Enjoy!

These are the things without which hostel life is incomplete.

Time and situation are totally different when we are a kid and an adult.

There are so many things that we realize during our time of life. During our childhood our parents always used to threaten with a lot of fearful dialogues to make us afraid of the things so that we work hard. And we actually used to be very afraid of these facts.

One threatening message was “Padhlo, warna hostel me daal denge tumko” And we used to be all scared with the fact itself that how the hell it’s going to happen? How can we just live without parents and away from home?

This thought itself used to bring trembles to me. But as I said above that life totally goes in a contrast when we grow up. Now if I say that I want to stay in a hostel, it will be like, “Ghar pe raho, koi zaroorat nahi hai”.

College life is one of the best days you can have in your life. Other than the school days of course! And the icing on the cake is the amazing hostel life you ever had. What? Never been to hostel? Well then here are the things you really have missed!

Many firsts in your life!

Hostel life marks to be the life when you are all footloose and live a care free life. You feel like a free bird and feel like trying out anything and everything. The first sip of alcohol or the smoke and not to mention it can be the place for your first showcase of the porn movie!

Home away from home

Hostel is surely a place which is just home away from home and you would never like to stay anywhere else other than a hostel. Not bathing for 3 consecutive days, watching movies back to back for the entire Sunday, where will you find this kind of freedom anywhere else?

Unlimited night outs

Everyone can go nostalgic how they used to sneak out of the hostel and then go for an amazing night out around the city by simply roaming about and having great fun with fellow mates.

Special privileges

Hostel people also enjoy special privileges at college as well as when they go home during holidays. For parents it’s just like their kid has come after so long and they feel like pampering them as much as they can, while in college teachers take special care of the kids who stay away from home.

Hostel food

That 2 am Maggie or a simple egg roll at a moving cart near the hostel gate, or the tasteless hostel food everything used to be special in the hostel life. The fight for food is the real thing you will realize in hostel.

Hostel life is the time when you realize so many things. It teaches you life’s numerous lessons and also makes you have some amazing companions all your life!

So, I would like to advise you to have a life at hostel at least once in your life to add an amazing experience to your book of life!

They were all ears on your rants, whether it was about the impious college professor or the lecher at your morning commute, she was the one you could bare your heart to.

She hated the person you hated:

Well, aside from the inside jokes, you had a common enemy and pushed each other by the corner of your elbows when they appeared in sight. That person may have been your enemy but your roomie hated them too, because do they have a choice?

She took care of you when you were sick:

She is your home away from home and took care of you in your bad health not any less than your mom would. She ran errands to get you medicines, take you to the clinic and do everything for you that would make you feel comforted.

She helped you study during your exams:

She always helped you brush up on what you studied by reading the notes out to you till nights on end. She deprived herself of sleep for this and you can never thank her enough for this.

She covered for you always:

If it was your turn to clear up the trash and you forgot, she always covered for you without asking for a return. That’s a true confidante isn’t it?

She always calmed you down:

There have been times when you were too hyper or too cranky but she knowing you inside out, always helped you out to calm down.

She always has been your voice of reason:

And that’s that when you were ripped off your reasoning power being blinded by rage. She always spoke on point to guide you in the right direction.

She did crazy stuff with you in the midnight:

Those drunk dancing in the midnight is worth remembrance.

If you too have studied in a residential college and passed a significant part of your life fighting over food, keeping up until late and gossiping only to feel achingly hungry at the crack of dawn and making showing some serious creative chops with Maggi.

Hostel life is the life that happens when we are hurrying headlong in the chase of life haunted by the fear to be succumbed in mediocrity.

And food, my dear is the key remembrance of our hostel lives. You too will agree with us if you well introspect.

From the watery daal to the half cooked Chapattis, Indian hostelers have been put through such horrifying experiences which taught them to be their own mainstay.

However here are some hostel foods that will make you truly nostalgic:

Hostel Foods –

1. Jhal-Muri:

Ahh! Those lazy evenings spent whilst munching on this awesome hot and spicy snack made with puffed rice and Chanachur. This was the most easily accessible snack for the hostelers and made within the drop of a hat.

2. Rolled-Chapattis:

You made your own rolled chapattis with the filling of your choice. So, apparently, the shitty hostel chapattis were not as useless. The noght-owls would save the chapattis for night and lace them with tangy ketchup, spicy chips, mayonnaise, jam et al to quench the 3.00 am hunger.

3. Cutting chai:

You grow your devotion towards chai in the college life itself while it is the only thing to go with eggs and bread at the nearby stall. Chai biscuit also satiated your hunger pangs between period breaks when you had classes in succession.

.

4. Maggi:

It was the staple for the hostelers. True messiah for the ones who were in always hurry. We always had Maggi handy and amost broke in cold sweat on finding there is no Maggi in stock. The myriad experiments with Maggi also later helped to excel as decent cooks in the later life.

5. Scrambled eggs:

We sneaked into the kitchen and broke the rule of not cooking in the hostel. Driven by necessity and relentless hunger, we resorted to this quick meal when mess food got on our nerves, literally. There was variety of dishes that could be tried with eggs, like incorporating fried eggs with Maggi to make it heavier.

6. Dry fruits:

Symbolic of her love, mommy packed dry fruits aplenty when we came back from home. Also, there were cakes and cookies, other home-made foods that were meant to be shared and eating alone was criminal.

New world, new people, everything is new and in soon it becomes an irreplaceable thing.

Those who had a hostel journey would also agree to the fact there many good sights that they have seen in their journey and also some bad incidents.

Below are the best and worst things about hostel life:

Here the Worst things:

Mess’ Food

You have no other option but rely on hostel’s mess food. Simple and similar dishes are provided by canteen which of course after sometime can bore anybody easily.

Less Facilities.

Hostels hardly provide you many facilities. The ratio of students’ and toilet is very less. And to make it worse are the long queues in the early morning. Crowded rooms, not so cool beds to sleep on, poor hygiene are some of the factors which make living at hostel little difficulty.

Home Sickness

Moving away from home gives a very ecstatic feeling but soon the novelty factor vanishes off and students are struck by home sickness. Everything around pisses off students as they badly miss their parents, home-made food and of course relaxed environment which one cannot get anywhere.

Many tend to learn Bad Habits to feel accepted.

Hostel life introduces many good and bad things and one the bad things are students getting lured by bad habits. Many fall to these habits under pressure. If students do not behave like others then they feel cornered or bullied.

No or less privacy.

Lack of privacy is also massive problem student faces in hostel. Mostly around 2-3 people are made to stay in one room. If you are the lucky one then you might get a single or just one partner.

Here are Best Things:

Independence- Learn to be on your own.

Being independent is one of important aspects in life and in hostel one gets the sense of freedom that one cannot get at home. Here one has to be on his/her terms. This opportunity is important which will help students in future.

Fun, friendship, bonding.

The level of bonding and fun one gets cannot be compared. Here you can learn how to cooperate and work in tandem which also sets the healthy competition. Friends play cupid, crazy birthday party celebrations, endless pranks are part and parcel of hostel life.

Sharing and Caring!

One can understand the value of their belongings and true sense of sharing in hostel. In hostel everything belongs to others.

Growth and exposure

At hostel one gets many opportunities to explore themselves, learn new aspects and arena. Hostel life acts as launch pad for many interesting prospects.

Well you must have heard this quite a lot from people talking about their college or school life.

And well what to say about hostel life?

Well if you happen to be an outstation student and you get a chance to stay at hostel, the first thought that usually comes to your mind if it’s the first time you’re staying away from your family- How will I survive?

The thought in itself tends to be intimidating but then trust me you don’t need to worry.

After sometime you actually learn to live and survive your hostel life.

This one is for the first timers.

Here’s some tips for hostellers and remember you may find it a bit tough to survive initially but then it will get better for you and once you are out of that place you’ll miss it.

So give it a read in case you are a hosteller.

Get used to the place!

This is the place where you have to spend your entire college life so just make sure you get to know the place well and get used to it.

Make friends!

Yes friends truly make your life easier so ensure you have good company. Make sure you make like minded friends. Trust me having a good company makes your college and hostel life easier.

Stay in touch with your family!

Make sure they are aware about you. Never hide anything from them, even the troubles you are facing there. In case there’s a senior who is ragging you or anything that is bothering you, make sure your parents or elder siblings know about it. Your family is always there to support you so ensure you keep them in loop. Thinking they might get worried and hiding things might turn bigger tomorrow so ensure you have a confidant.

Watch out for your expenses!

When you stay away from your family, you need to watch out for your expense. You have to manage your entire month with the limited pocket money so ensure you don’t waste money on stupid expenses. Try to use your money wisely.

Keep your money and valuables locked..Always!

You need to be your own caretaker. Also ensure you keep your cupboard locked when you’re not in your room. Your valuables safety is in your hand and you don’t want it to be stolen right? So make sure you keep your stuff safely.

Respect hostel warden!

Make sure you respect your warden and don’t indulge in anything that can possibly miff her/him. Respect the timings and rules of the hostel.

Have fun but don’t cross the line!

Yes make sure you have fun in your hostel life but never indulge in the activities that may get you into trouble or make you feel guilty if you get caught.

Don’t forget the main reason you are there!

And that is studies! Yes make sure you don’t forget to study well. Don’t just stay in your room and bunk classes. It shouldn’t be all fun and no study. We tend to get distracted but then telling yourself what you need to do foremost sometime helps. So ensure you are always ready for your semesters.

Keep your room clean!

We are not used to do cleaning and washing at home but in hostel you don’t have that liberty so you have to do all that by yourself. Just make sure you keep your surrounding and your room clean because at the end of the day it’s you who has to stay there.

Be positive and always be good to everyone!

Trust me our nature helps a lot. If you are positive and good to everyone be it your seniors or batch mates and even the staff of the hostel, it will help you a lot.We are respected for our good behavior and so always remain positive.

These were some of the tips that might help you in your hostel life.

You will miss your family and friends a lot and sometime you may even cry but then tell yourself you are here to make your life and career and all will be well.

Just have fun, enjoy your golden days and also just live the best days of your life.

All the best!
