In a way, a true blue fault finding machine she was!

And a loud declaration of superiority!

Are all Bengalis like that? I always thought!

And Piku, stamped my belief to a great extent!

No, I am not gauging the pedigree of this rosogulla community by the looks, or the way they pronounce certain words or what they cook in their kitchens!

I am simply going by the attitude of superiority and classiness they portray, without being asked for!

Bhashkor Banerjee’s (Amitabh Bachchan) repeated references to being a Bengali in Piku and Rana Chaudhary (Irrfan Khan) being asked if he was a Bengali ‘Chaudhury’ captured this aspect of the perceived superiority of the Bengali bhadralok accurately.

While I loved Shoojit Sircar’s frames that captured the upper middle class life aptly, be it C R Park in Delhi or a heritage house in North Kolkata, what also struck me was how Piku justified Bengali community’s deep-rooted classism through its characters and dialogues.

“He is the owner Baba,” Piku (Deepika Padukone) introducing Rana to Bhashkor Banerjee as the owner of a cab-renting agency and not a taxi driver himself, seemed like a justification her who is an educated Bengali architect, to fall in love with him. I’ve lost count of the number of times the viewers are told in one way or the other that Irrfan Khan was not just a taxi driver, but an educated guy who lost his engineering job abroad and now runs a taxi service. And that is the reason Piku, who otherwise would not have entertained an iota of his personality, is at the least talking to him!

What was the director scared of?

Ruining the portrait of a Bengali Bhadra Woman?

There is more than one instance when over the top persona of Bhashkor meanders from being a sophisticated Bengali to a classist Bengali in Piku. The way he shouts at his domestic help when she complains about his intrusive behaviour to Piku or how he makes his caretaker, Budhan from a West Bengal village do everything for him – even cleaning and sanitizing his portable shit pot. And well, if this can be overlooked as nursing and caring for the elderly, Sircar gives a classist shade to his younger characters as well.

When Piku’s dinner date is blown away due to Bhaskor’s “potty demographic call”, right at the dinner table, Piku actually goes out and cribs about the guy not knowing any of Satyajit Ray movies and not quoting anything from them! Well, really?

Would you really size an otherwise cultured, good-looking and pleasant guy based on how many Bengali movies he watches and not?

And…

Bhashkor Banerjee, the dear dad, ready to put his daughter’s life at stake and wouldn’t mind her going marriageless for the rest of her life just because he is CONSTIPATED!

And that he calls the IQ of a high thinking Bengali! Which very conveniently goes down the drain when he declares his daughter’s virginity to an absolute stranger he is meeting at a party!

And what? Do all bengalis always discuss potty, everywhere, anywhere? And to the graphic details?

That’s something I don’t see a Punjabi or a South-indian doing! Not at meal times at least!

Otherwise a bold film, appreciated by many for openly talking about a woman’s choices in life and her sexual needs, Piku according to me plays extremely safe when it comes to challenging the Bengali classist undertones in our society.

The film definitely draws from real life and perhaps Piku has successfully reflected the existing post-colonial hang-ups of Bengali Sahib and Memsahib culture, which the modern society has come past by now. Instead of a critical representation, it has embraced it as a current day situation. And that certainly bothers me, and holds me from going near a Bengali!

If all Bengalis are like Bhashkor Banerjee and Piku, I really do hate them!

But this faith was broken again after just two days on Friday following the news of Salman’s verdict being cancelled by the High Court.

After a few raging comments on twitter & Facebook and after spending the weekend with the family while enjoying a blockbuster, it seemed that people had already forgotten about Salman & carried on with their lives & their fight with their biggest enemy Monday.

But since this was not enough another blow came this morning that the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha was cleared of her charges on Disproportionate Assets case today!

And the worst part is that they say the Judge took only ‘10 seconds’ to deliver the verdict.

Such examples of powerful & famous people manipulating the law & finding their way out, just forces people to have disbelief in the law.

How can someone get away from a jail sentence of 4 to 5 years in just a few days or a matter of seconds?

Does it imply that only money can buy justice?

As it is shown in the movie ‘Gabbar Is Back’, that one guy makes an unofficial but an effective organization to fight corruption and bring justice to the society. Though due to the character’s method being incorrect, he had to face the consequences and was hanged to death.

But it’s the incidents like these that actually fuel a lot of rage inside the hearts of common people & things like this can give rise to a real life Gabbar!!

So do you think that India needs a real life Gabbar?

How can we be as effective as ‘Gabbar’ without using the unlawful ways that he used in the movie?

India has been breaking all records in terms of overall piracy consumption, be it movies or music we like everything pirated because originality is not just our style.

But is piracy just a small mistake or an act of guilt or is it a Big Big Crime!!

1.

Furious 7 broke all box-office records but the film was downloaded 2.59 million times worldwide on torrent networks in five days and India topped with 5, 78,000 downloads while Pakistan was second with 3, 21,000, followed by China with 2, 89,000 peer-to-peer torrent downloads.

2.

“The piracy industry in India is Rs.1, 500 crore and much of it go to funding terror,” Moser Baer India chief executive Harish Dayani told IANS.

3.

Film piracy can be more paying than drug-trafficking. The report says a pirated DVD made in Malaysia for 70 cents is marked up more than 1,000% and sold in London for about $9. “The profit margin is more than three times higher than the mark-up for Iranian heroin and higher than the profit from Columbian cocaine,” the report says. – Rand Corporation.

4.

A large part of the Indian Mujahedeen operations are actually funded by Bollywood movies!
This terrorist outfit directly benefits to the tune of Rs 900- Rs 1000 crore (annually) by distributing pirated films and Bollywood movies account for more than 75% of that amount.

5.

Gang members have established links with small-time theatres in Gujarat where the camera prints are taken at the first show of any new film. Earlier they were mostly pirating Indian films, but now, with the arrival of multiplexes, they are pirating Hollywood films too. – TOI

6.

There are about 200 private networks and video sharing sites who buy these files from its Pakistani counterparts.

Since 2001, the music industry piracy caused losses of 462 million dollars in 3 years. – Window2India

7.

Just so you know it is the most ancient group of texts based on the human sexual behavior written by Vatsyayana.

In spite of this, there are some shocking facts that have come to light in the recent times.

A study says that in India, there are more than 50% married women who are sexually dissatisfied with their men. Probably the cause for the increasing divorce rates is this reason. Compared to many other Asian countries, the rate of women being dissatisfied with their sex life is much higher.

The main reason for dissatisfaction is the increasing stress and work load in a person’s life. In the run of extreme, competition and stress of job is making life a little difficult for the couples and making many women unhappy with their married life.

Well much to your information, we Indians have a solution to any problem in any which way.

Yes, the solution to this problem is Gigolos. The trend of gigolos is speeding up in the recent times. Gigolos, basically, are the male prostitutes providing services to women of different age groups right from the college going girls to the working women and housewife. They have huge clientele.

Just like men have female escorts to satisfy their sexual desire their male counterpart gigolos are an emerging trend in the present time. Much to our surprise, it is believed that this trend is now going popular even in Bollywood.

Men who are mostly involved in this profession are basically from good families but the want of easy money and luxury lifestyle force them get into this. People who are mostly involved in this are gym instructors, struggling actors and models, courier boys and many more.

Apart from this, there have been many training sessions given to gigolos, because according to personal blog of a gigolo, it is not just their looks that fetch them work but good personality and the way they talk is also important. This is the main reason why there are many experienced gigolos who are grooming other men for this profession. Also they are given a proper sex education to protect them from all kinds of STDs.

There has been a long debate on whether to legalize prostitution or not, but with present scenario, seems like legalizing it is a better option for both men and women not for the masses but for the people who are engaged in such a profession.

Although they are unacceptable by the society, legalizing them can be a good decision in order to make their life a bit better in the near future.

Yes if you are still not following her on Twitter then seriously you are missing some real doze of entertainment. Well I am not a very big fan of her twins on #TittyTuesdays but seriously flummoxed at the level to which a person can go to seek attention.

Good afternoon from the Twins and I…. #TittyTuesday …Stay Tuned from my contribution to TITTY TUESDAY!! pic.twitter.com/RDTTg4sMCL

— Poonam Pandey (@iPoonampandey) February 10, 2015

When I read that line about her contribution to ‘Titty Tuesday’ I was aghast. Seriously cheapness at its heights!! I so want to ask her what are the names of her “twins”….Karan-Arjun?

She is so much in the news of baring it all that when she puts on clothes she actually has to update people that it isn’t a fake profile.

Just because am wearing Full Clothes..
does not mean it's a Fake Picture!! pic.twitter.com/EYdJLkD6kv

Oh yes she was very much in the news back in 2011 when India won the World Cup. She had received media attention as she promised to strip naked if India won. However as per reports BCCI played spoilsport and didn’t allow the stripping to happen even though India won the Cup.

She bore all though after Kolkata Knight Riders won.

This year the hashtag #ThisWorldCupPoonamPandeyWill became a big trending topic.

If not acting she at least has a wonderful career option in cheer leading. Wonder if this is how you cheer for your favorite team…well who am I to judge?

Anyways this is how she has been cheering India…

She has a fetish of taking extreme close up selfies of her assets

Oops was that disappointing, well then here it is her bed time selfie:

https://twitter.com/iPoonampandey/status/575002257114038272

Seriously it doesn’t matter if it’s in the bed or not but this selfie is definitely a bad selfie. What is the psyche of such people? What does she even want to convey? Is she the only girl with b**bs?

We tend to point fingers at someone’s love interest and do not even think before making a filthy comment. Ever since Virat Kohli blew a kiss to Anushka Sharma, their love life has been a big topic of discussion.

Of course people are intrigued to see more such magical moments. As long as the gossip columns talk about their relationship and keep the guesswork drama, well it is all a part of entertainment news.

But it turns murky when the relationship is linked to one’s profession.

“It is primitive to call me a distraction”, said Anushka Sharma in a recent interview.

Seriously it is so baffling to understand that how an actress is responsible for someone’s performance on the field. If Virat is under performing then blame the player, his coach or the team. How is Anushka’s name even popping with respect to his performance? Is she his coach?

If Anushka acts badly on-screen (that reminds me her movie NH10 is releasing tomorrow and I can’t wait to watch it) would Virat be held responsible?

Both are completely different professions and their professional career has got nothing to do with the relationship they share with each other.

What does the BCCI expect of players? The cricketers shouldn’t have a personal life?

Every player should ideally have no families, no friends and no attachments if you see the weird logic of girlfriends being distractions.

In India where families and bonds are considered as the biggest strength it is sad to see how a bond easily gets termed as a mere distraction.

The legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar also had a love marriage. Relation is a personal affair and to come up with dirty remarks and tags based on mere speculations for the same depicts simply a very sad state of the country.

As the office of deputy director of Mumbai division issued circulars to all schools and even a prominent party politician introduced a 12-point programme to ensure that the entire state of Maharashtra celebrates Marathi Bhasha Diwas, (#मराठीभाषादिवस) let us do our bit to make people aware of the importance of this language in Indian cinema.

This day has its relevance in the fact that it observes the birth anniversary of Marathi Literary Laureate, V V Shirwadhkar also known as popular poet, Kavi Kusumagraj, (#kusumagraj) his pen name.

On this #Marathibhashadiwas, we would like to pay a tribute to all the eminent Marathi directors, producers and actors and the cast of some great Marathi movies, out of which few should have even been nominated for Oscars. We are always so excited about Italian, French and Japanese cinema and others, despite the fact that we depend on the subtitles. Here, by any chance we are not suggesting that they are not good, rather they are exciting and promote the great direction and cinematography skills in a movie. But on a comparative basis, do we ever watch even a few movies belonging to the Indian regional cinema category. Marathi movies have faced much low appeal among its audience although there are many high-quality movies that it is difficult to list down a few among the plethora of great feature films in the industry, that are worth a watch for all the cinema lovers out there for the levity of the work and its though-provoking as well as appeasing nature. Here we list down a few Marathi movies which every non-Marathi must see.

10.) Chaukat Raja

This movie released in 1991 starring Dilip Prabhavalkar shows him playing the character of a mentally challenged boy was versatile enough and portrayed a different perspective to specially-abled people. These movies from our growing-up days gave us a true picture of real life and its absurdities.

Chaukat Raja

9.) Shala (2012)

This movie set in the innocent school set-up defines the lives of four 9th grade kids, coming from different cultural and family backgrounds, who wrote their own destinies where one of them faces the trouble behind letting his love know his feelings towards her. All these friends face similar phases, struggles and attempt to become free and liberated while also feeling lonely at times. This is one movie that is sure to make you nostalgic and think of your innocent childhood when you were free of all the complicated struggles of life yet the simple troubles used to seem so large that we used to think that we are the most troubled lot.

Sujay Dahake’s direction has truly presented Indian culture and the childhood emotions in a brilliantly wonderful manner, so much so that everytime you watch it, the movie strikes a chord with you and your childhood days.

Shala

8.) Ratra Aarambh

This movie in 1999 was based on a schizophrenic and the workings of his mind. Again Dilip Prabhavalkar plays this role and brilliantly edges out the workings of the mind of a schizophrenic. However, while ‘A Beautiful Mind’ grabbed four Oscars, this movie based on a similar concept and equally gripping could not gain much international recognition.

Ratra Aarambh

7.) Uttarayan

Recently, The Lunch Box acquired much critical acclaim but there is also a Marathi movie, Uttarayan that redefined love with the concept of love being ageless and a post-retirement phase where two partners celebrate love and life. Accomplished actors like Shivaji Satam and Neena Kulkarni played the parts of the two lovers.

Uttarayan

6.) Anumati

This movie would resurrect the value of the eternal institution of marriage with senior actors such as Vikram Gokhale, Neena Kulkarni, Reema Lagoo and others playing important roles. The main theme behind the story is a middle-aged man saving his ailing wife from death. It is sure to touch the hearts of people with its immense stress on humanity and the essentials in a husband-wife relationship.

Anumati

5.) 72-Miles-Ek Pravas

An adventurous and surprising experience that a child undergoes during his journey of 72 miles, opens his world to an outflow of abundant knowledge where he learns the lessons of life gradually and eventually. Human reactions to different emotions and situations form the base of this movie and make it more and more lucid and appealing. The scintillating performances of Chinmay Sant and Smita Tambe make the movie even more striking.

72-Miles-Ek Pravas

4.) Taryancha Bait

This story is based on how a son wins the bet with his father, upon which his father promises him to take him to the city of dreams, Mumbai. The financial circumstances of the father and his children are very poor provoke the father to wish that his son lose the bait however, the son continuously tries different ways to win the bet and his endeavours do not meet failure. His unflinching spirit to fulfil his dream of going to the city of dreams has the capacity to enthral the audience and make for an endearing watch.

Taryancha Bait

3.) Jogwa

Directed by Rajeev Patil and based on a more spiritual concept on the life of a group of people who are popularly known as Jogta or Jogtin and forego all the materialistic worldly pleasures to serve God, this movie went on to win the National Award and was deemed as one of the boldest movies in Marathi cinema industry.

After this movie, Marathi cinema had left behind the traditional nomenclatures that decided the genre of a movie and even the controversial ideas of lip-locks were no longer an issue.

Jogwa

2.) Sant Tukaram (1936)

This movie by is a biopic of Sant Tukaram – the great social reformer, poet and saint of India whose valued principles became the base of humanity in India. Considered an all-time classic, the movie showcases the godly figure in a light where he fights against the inequalities and biased judgements of the society. The equality among all humans and their rights to lead lives the way they desire is a motto that the movie brings forth through the character of Sant Tukaram. The film also shows the emergence of the warkari sect in Maharashtra and how Tukya as he was known in his village became Tukaram Maharaj, thus making his antics popular across the world and serving the film industry with the greatest biopic of all times. It won among the top three best films in Venice Film Festival and was the first Indian movie to claim an International recognition.

Sant Tukaram

1.) Raja Harishchandra

Raja Harishchandra

Even though people might say that this is a silent movie and hence cannot be deemed as a Marathi movie, Raja Harishchandra (1913) is a classic that can be viewed several times, to learn different things at each watch. We cannot forego mentioning a movie of this quality owing its greatness to none other than the Father of Indian Cinema, the legendary Dada Saheb Phalke.

We are so tempted to mention a few more movies. The list is endless but if you would permit us, we would want to enlist Dombivili Fast, Shwaas that won a National Award, Mee Shivajiraje Bhosale Boltoy, Shikshanachya Aaicha Gho, Duniyadari, Kaaksparsh, Harishchandrachi Factory, The Temple, Ek Hota Vidushak, Sarkarnama, Dhadakebaaz, Shyamchi Aai, Balak Palak and Checkmate. Harishchandrachi Factory, Shwaas and Kaaksparsh are probably a few among these that deserve to win an Oscar apart from the classic movies mentioned above.

We bow to Kavi Kusumagraj, the laureate for his great contributions to Marathi/Indian literature, who is the inspiration behind such great movies. Happy Marathi Bhasha Diwas to all!

“Iss sheher ko kya hua…kahi aag hain toh kahi dhua.” Remember these cheesy lines from the informative videos intending to urge people to quit smoking?

If you thought those were pathetic then you need to hear the anti-drug song by none other than the spiritual leader and head of Dera Sacha Sauda, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.

(Disclaimer: I understand the good intention that might have gone behind the making of this video. I am not criticizing the intention but questioning the quality of the video and the depiction of the message.)

The ‘baap’ of controversial leaders was recently in the news for his film ‘The Messenger Of God’ (MSG).

Now this informative video on the consequences of drug intake is going to blow your mind. The video has this irritating slogan, ‘drug na lena re’. Actually your mind will not blow after hearing this but would simply blast.

Pathetic composition at its best and that is not enough. You need to watch the video…OMG!!!

Puking scenes coupled with repetitive lyrics will make you light up one more joint just to relieve of the headache this video causes.

Also please do take a note of the brilliant fashion he is sporting. Don’t miss the shot at 1:07. I don’t even want to question the chroma shot as his pants left me aghast. I mean, seriously what exactly is he wearing? Pink checkered pants or should I call them leggings…Sabyasachi should see this one.

Such ‘janhit mein jaari’ disastrous tracks would make you either lol with your friends or is supremely capable of giving you a migraine attack.

Skin show celebrating a woman’s figure has always been a matter of controversy and debate in the country.

What is wrong in showing a woman in a bikini?

For example, if a lingerie ad has to be depicted there is nothing wrong in showing the model sporting that product. But the controversy arises because the same skin show doesn’t happen when we talk about men.

Indian ad industry had brilliantly played with this stereotype and somewhere it is evident that we as society refrain from showing a guy taking his pants off.

Take this example of ad of MacroMan premium inners starring Hrithik Roshan; although he sports the vest but doesn’t take off his pants. What is so baffling to me is the skin show of the girl coming out of the pool towards the end of the ad.

Clearly the director didn’t have the guts to ask Hrithik to take off his pants or may be he said no. My point is, what was the need to show a bikini-clad woman in a product that is meant for men?

The Indian ad world is absurd. Even though the product is for men, women are undressed.

What do the genius creative heads producing such ads think? Stereotyping and limiting the skin show is what creates an imbalance and that gives rise to objectification of women.

Another ‘Jockey’ ad will make you wonder if the director had been equally sensitive had the model been a girl.

Why does all the thinking process happen when we are selling a male product? Of course there are models breaking the stereotypes, but still a large section of the ad world in our country refrain from going bold with male models.

The Manforce ads that Sunny Leone promotes would show her in a seductive, sexy avatar but aren’t these condoms supposed to be worn by men?

Ranveer Singh made headlines to be the first A-list actor in a condom ad (Durex). But even that had him properly covered dancing with several skimpily dressed women.

Aren’t we being a hypocrite as a society by covering our actors and exposing women?

In recent case, where a girl took a video of abusing a man who misbehaved with her in a flight, if you look at the co-passengers, everyone is actually enjoying the sight as if there is a show going on. All they want to do is to be a mere spectator and pass judgement on the transpiring event.

Watching this over-hyped video, I would like to bring the light on the spectators who were an amazing muted audience for the scene.

I would like to ask the girl, how many of them actually stood up for her in the fight.

Watch the video once again and notice the spectators.

How many spectators you see in the video?

The whole country was outraged and people from all walks of life jolted on the streets to oppose the 16th December rape case. Every person disparaged the heinous crime committed by a group of men on a 24-year-old woman. Much to our surprise, many people who ignored both the victims when they were crying for help may be the part of the whole rally. The irony is there are a number of people who are against eve-teasing but they may serve as a fuel to the fire to the whole situation. While the girl with all courage raises the voice against eve-teasing in public, many people just witness it as television soap.

If a girl raises her voice against an eve teaser, people judge a girl blaming her about bad upbringing or arrogant behaviour. Even if a girl is being molested, according to them they find it a girl’s mistake.

There have been so many incidents where people who witness the scene, simply enjoy the moment and just walk away. They don’t even bother to help or take a stand for the girl. Some girls who are unable to voice out there anger are unfortunately stopped by such groups of people.

Then there are a group of people who love adding spice to the situation so that they can enjoy the most out of it. Having a personal experience, there are people who just provoke anger of the girls by giving them an advice of hitting the accused person. My great advise to them will be, “Aap rehne dijiye, aapse na ho paega”.

What they expect of the whole scene is to be aired on a channel. So rather than helping a girl to fight against the roadside romeos, they have such lovely ideas to do away with.

So people, no matter how many candles you burn for a protest and support the cause, it will never help until and unless you join the voice of the girl rather than enjoying and making fun of the sad situation!

If you can help then stop else do mind your steps!

All women in hijab cannot be subjected to prejudice and amongst all the controversies marked in the history; February 1 is celebrated as the World Hijab Day all across the globe in recognition of all the Muslim women.

The Hijab for women has been always a controversial topic among the people, one who are against it and the one who support the idea. Hijab being one of the sensitive issues, there have been all kinds of opinions coming out from all types of people.

So, the World Hijab Day was first celebrated in 2013 by Nazma Khan. The main objective behind this was to support the religious and traditional aspect of hijab by different people and at the same time to make the non-hijabi women also experience it once. It is observed in almost 116 countries all over the world.

Just like the recent case of Charlie Hebdo in Paris, Hijab also became a topic of heated discussion among the people and it resulted in the ban of the Hijab in France in 2009, as according to them it reflected the traditional and stringent religious practices. On the contrary, it has been made a compulsory practise in the Middle-East Asia. Many countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, etc. have made the hijab compulsory for women. Although in many countries it might be accepted but still they do not support it.

World Hijab Day 2015

Post 9/11 there has been a major debate on a woman wearing a hijab. Many people were actually being teased and abused on the basis of the Muslim religion. The biggest problem with a woman wearing the hijab is that she is immediately type casted as an orthodox Muslim woman and the topic just ends right there. There is a sudden block in our minds regarding them. They also are being judged as less skilled and dependent. However a hijab cannot be the deciding factor of a woman’s abilities.

World Hijab Day 2015

When we talk about different countries, in Morocco there is a certain prejudice seen with the women in hijab and at the same time in Afghanistan during the Taliban reign, a women being behind the veil was a compulsion and very cruel steps were taken to punish the lady who did not abide by the rule.

It is high time that we realize that a piece of cloth which some people consider as a religious pride or an obligation and on the other hand some find it as an orthodox and an imposing factor should be actually depending on people’s choice. While it cannot be even imposed on small children, it can be highly respected as a choice of someone’s life.

Marking a good harvest season and a good relief from the biting cold especially in North India, comes Lohri after Makar Sankranti each year, that is also significant both traditionally and culturally in the country. Lohri night is rather believed to be the longest night and a beginning of the winter solstice, where the origin of the name is subjected to several theories for instance, ‘ Loi’, the wife of Saint Kabir or ‘Loh’, an iron pan used for making food.

Lohri night is rather believed to be the longest night and a beginning of the winter solstice, where the origin of the name is subjected to several theories for instance, ‘ Loi’, the wife of Saint Kabir or ‘Loh’, an iron pan used for making food.

Celebrated commonly among the Punjabi community, it truly is a festival to celebrate love and exuberance. People not only in Punjab but even in Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Himachal Pradesh rejoice on the occasion of Lohri with utmost enthusiasm and zest.

Illuminating one’s house or roads with a bonfire that has come to be a part of the ceremonial ritual, offering popcorns and nuts in the fire, dancing to the dhol beats, singing folklore while taking rounds around the fire like ‘Sundar mundariye Tera Kaun Bechara Dulla Bhatti Wala…’, preparing delicious sweets and dishes and feasting on them are some popular traditional yet interesting activities. Dulla Bhatti is apparently a traditional hero who had robbed the rich to help the poor.

Lohri is mainly celebrated for thanking God for the beautiful and fruitful harvest season and for the essential natural elements like water, air and fire and focuses on praying to the God of Fire to always bless the land to prosper with crops. It is also celebrated with popular food items like ‘makki-di-roti’ and ‘sarson-da-saag’.

Children particularly enjoy visiting their neighbours to collect sweets, nuts and snacks such as gajak, til, rewri, jaggery and moongphali as well as some cash. This practice is known as ‘Lohri Loot.’ Newly-wed couples and new-born babies are especially welcomed with even more splendid celebrations and a grand rejoice, particularly in Punjabi families.

This is a nice time to have a get together with your family and friends to celebrate, rejoice and get refreshed and rejuvenated from daily chores and professional stresses. Lohri wishes which earlier were on word of mouth and over the phone or mail now are conveniently displayed over the social media sites. Twitter has seen the spirit of Lohri among people with several people wishing their near and dear ones and other Twitteratis as well on the social networking site.

Among all this hush and rush and humdrum on the first grand festival of the year 2015, ninety trains have reportedly been cancelled today on the very occasion of Lohri and three flights have been delayed in Delhi.

This is sure to disrupt the celebration of Lohri this year for many people living in North India.

While praying that these people get together with their loved ones soon, let us enjoy this day to the fullest with gifts and greetings to our friends and family. Happy Lohri!

December surely marks the honeymoon period for all the people in love making awesome ever lasting memories.

The Indian ad industry has tapped this insight and has brilliantly worked on this idea to sell some of their products.

For example the below ‘Cadbury Dairy Milk ad’ shows romance experimenting with snow fights and sells the product.

Cadbury has been known to play their USP along the lines of festivities and seasons.

This ad is a perfect ad for winter season. Chocolate, romance and snow fights amongst couples are beautifully linked to each other.

Some winter wear ads have also lived up to the classic representation of romance explored through the medium of advertisement.

For example this very old ad of Monte Carlo Collection would just make you go mushy and cuddle your partner this season.

Aww, seriously this ad film goes beyond than just romance. It goes deep exploring the complexities of relations and the winter collections representing the mood of the season.

They have beautifully combined the winter season as a whole (the complexities with respect to extreme cold to pleasantly cold) to the love angle that has depth of layers of emotions attached.

The tag line reads love the season for ‘Monte Carlo’ completely summarizing the story idea.

Even the modern age ad of ‘Monte Carlo Thermal Wear’ explore the same romantic angle but this one has a quirkier story.

The ad of ‘Ponds Cold Cream’ plays on the relation of friendship.

The season is connected to the warmth you tend to seek in a friend. The unattached cold feeling welcomes a warm gesture. That could be a beginning to a budding friendship.

Also the use of tapri ki chaai (tea stall experience) adds all the more flavor to the season where you start enjoying the warm winter-some moment.

Below ad is a classic winter ad that defies taking the common route of exploring only emotional connect.

Amul Body Warmer:

It experiments the scope for comedy with respect to this season. Instead of tackling harsh winter with warm gestures or heated romance this ad directly sells the product and says the jingle ‘bye bye thandi’.

It makes a direct message without beating around the bush. The funny scenes example the ‘Draupadi vastraharan’ scene has Draupadi enjoying the saree being removed as Amul Body Wear has secured her from severe cold.

The creativity has been completely out of the box with a funny approach to portray the winter season.

These ads using the USP to the aspects of winter season has lured the audience giving a seasonal flavor to the ads.

Very innovative way of telling people to engage in data sharing and calling, this ad series doesn’t give the cliché setting of girls who would want to gossip and all.

The situation used is what is unique and quirky.

The tagline ‘Bhalai Ki Supply’ came with the first ad conceptualised by ‘Contract Advertising’ had an immediate connect with the social media users.

Our lives in new media almost depend on the likes, comments and shares. Showing a social butterfly as a character craving for attention, they just completely nailed our weak spot.

The second film on the same line came with the importance of sharing a funny joke. Here the voice over used and the scenario depicted is something that will immediately catch our attention.

The film shows a guy laughing reading sms. The voice over makes him understand the importance of sharing that funny joke with his roommate in office.

The description is a lot funny may be even funnier than the joke he must have read.

The way the other guy is shown in office is something every corporate youth can relate to.

Although the last shot of water gushing was a bit too much and looked irrelevant. I think too creative they went there.

The 3rd film will add one degree extra dose of laughter. The previous showed the importance of sharing the joke.

This one shows if sharing joke could bring such a huge relief then the amount of happiness and joy one gossip call could make.

The most striking part of this ad that I liked is again the situation and the characters used to show the message. Gossip is usually related to women and the stereotype is used in ads.

But they used it differently. They showed a guy in a pressure cooker manufacturing factory desperately in need of some relief. Hence the voice over explains the importance of calling him and sharing the gossip.

Again the refreshing angle was taken a bit too seriously and the last shot of dolphins made no sense.

But the exaggeration angle was played throughout the ad series and that actually worked quite well.

Although we had seen many film stars sporting specs in many films but nobody ever really came forward to make it such a strong style statement.

The specs mostly were a part of the on screen character.

For example Deepika Padukone in ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ removed her specs in the second part of the movie in the song ‘Badtameez Dil’ where she was wearing a saree.

Especially with women the stigma with spectacles is very high in the society.

The transformation or make over usually is always depicted with removing specs or braces.

Lot of times when we even describe a girl with specs people get the picture of ‘Jassi’ – the famous household character from the serial ‘Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi’ that had once gained very high popularity. Chashmis, double battery, etc. are the names that people with specs are usually called.

Bottom line: Women and specs was a relation not really explored in depth.

The combination could be sexy and what better way to pass the message with Chitrangda sporting the product.

#TitanEyePlus launched #Enigma the new collection of spectacles for women. The TVC released shows the gorgeous #ChitrangdaSingh in spectacles.

Making a strong point that spectacle can be worn as a part of stylish and trendy accessory and challenging the entire notion about the product, the message makes an instant connect with the audience.

The TVC talks about this woman who won’t do away with her specs. She gets a very big project but she turns it down as their demands don’t go with her belief. They want her to get rid of the spectacles but she insists that her specs are her style.

She goes ahead and does an ad with the spectacle company.

Sporting the trendy fashionable specs she wears her attitude.

When the glamorous Diva looks hot in specs we really start wondering and exploring the other options with this product.

Directed by Prasoon Pandey the ad ventures into the glorious sexy appeal of spectacles through the gorgeous Chitrangda Singh

Talking about the conceptualisation of the TVC, Rajiv Rao – National Creative Director of Ogilvy India explains how spectacles are fashionable and explores the fabulous part of women in specs.

Being Chashmis is almost a passé. Now if someone ever calls a girl chashmis do remember this fabulous face of Chitrangda Singh.

From our President extending his greetings and wishes to all the fellow citizens on the auspicious occasion of #GuruNanakJayanti to our PM Modi tweeting about following the path of compassion, peace and love shown by Guru Nanak Devji, every Indian is breathing the auspicious moment and the divine aroma of langars across.

Bollywood celebrities buzzing their wishes and remembering Guru Nanak Devji in their twitter world are spreading the message of love and compassion.

Talking of Bollywood let us have the glimpses of the extravagant and magnificent shots of Gurudwaras in Indian cinema where the soul meets the scenes and reaches a supreme crescendo.

First is the song that really touches the soul and creates the musical mystique.

Ik Onkar from Rang De Basanti

Singer Harshdeep Kaur takes us through a spiritual tour. Her pure soothing voice does complete justice to the message.

One gets the instant message of attaining bliss and the serenity with which the song is shot also gives an in depth understanding.

This scene from the film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi takes the entire concept of love to a very spiritual level.

Both of them pray for each other’s happiness. The best part is when she converses with Him. She wonders why does her husband say he sees God in her. She knows she isn’t anything as compared to Him.

Many people claim to be in love but to attain that spiritual feeling and reach a stage where you see well-being in others is divine.

Finally I would love to end the story with this beautiful voice…

Again its Ik Onkar but sung by Shreya Ghoshal in this Malayalam film called ‘Mallu Singh’

Yes it is a Malayalam film where Shreya Ghoshal paves through the mystical notes of IK Onkar

#HappyGurupurab – Guru Nanak Devji is celebrated word over and on the auspicious day let us follow his path of simple things but really difficult to put to practise in real life. Truth, love and compassion – truly required especially in this brutal world where the number of crimes has taken an absurd toll.

This time the festival will see vivid artists giving a soulful Sufiyana touch.

The 1st day of the festival i.e. on the 7th of this month would start with a documentary film – #BreatheIntoMe. The documentary would start at 5pm. The documentary is by Muzaffar Ali – a recipient of the #PadmashriAward.

Muzaffar Ali is an Indian film maker, fashion designer, poet, artist, etc. His famous film ‘Umarao Jaan’ starring #Rekha is still talked about.

#BreatheIntoMe is a documentary on #MevlanaRumi’s poetry. The screening would be followed by a flute conversation where he would be taking us through #Rumi’s verses.

This event would conclude with an interactive session with #MuzaffarAli

We are talking of Sufi music festival and it is incomplete without #Qawwali.

Sufi music is best expressed in this genre of music.

At 7:30pm #WarsiBrothers from Hyderabad would entice the audience with their #DargahiQawwali performances composed by various #Sufi saints.

Nasir and Nazir Ahmed Khan Warsi belong to the QawwalBaccheGharana and are trained by their father and grandfather Zahir Ahmed and Aziz Ahmed who were also noted #Qawwali singers.

The next day, i.e. on the 8th of this month, there will be two documentary screening starting 5:30pm. The documentaries are again by #MuzaffarAli.

The documentaries are in English named ‘India, the garden of saints’ and ‘Nisbat’.

Please note the entry for these screenings would be free and on first come first serve basis.

As #Qawwali forms an integral part of #Sufi, how can we miss the famous #SufiWhirling?

Bollywood’s depiction has made the #SufiWhirling quite famous. We saw the famous #Khwaja song from #JodhaAkbar where #Hrithik twirls through the Sufi music and is shown to attain enlightenment.

We won’t have #Hrithik but #ZiyaAzazi – a Turkish born Austrian dancer and choreographer would entice us with his dance performance.

Last but not the least the famous Sufi star of the industry Kailash Kher would rock into the spiritual power the last day.

The ending day of the festival, i.e. 9th of November would witness Kailash Kher enticing the audience with Sufiana songs raging from traditional compositions to Bollywood Sufi songs.

This year it is starting from 5th November and would be held for 12 days in Mumbai.

The promo of the festival is on air. Performed by #MakrandDeshpande and written by #SwanandKirkire the promo is named – #Darshak (Audience)

Please note the angle taken of the promo.

It talks about the variety of performances right from musical plays to the exhibition of art and culture from the audience’s perspective.

It doesn’t directly talk about what the festival has in store for us this year.

#MakrandDeshpande enacts both as an audience and the performer and points the connection. It gives you the chance to sit on the other side of the stage.

There is a famous dialogue from the German movie ‘Veronica Voss’ “Light and Shadows are the two secrets of a motion picture.”

The theatre is hugely based on the brilliant use of lights and shadows.

#MakrandDeshpande projects the various aspects of the theatre from the audience’s point of view.

#SwanandKirkire points out aspects like light and shadow, poetry, art, circus, etc. everything that is a part of theatre.

The trailer of #PrithviTheatreFestival last year was the cliché one with several performers posing backstage. It gave a message of what we could expect in the festival.

But the idea to put the audience in the pedestal was quite innovative.

The start of the promo is where he enacts getting down from a car and talks about the busy schedule that we experience in our routine life.

Towards the end the wall between the audience and the stage is broken when Makrand is standing in place of audience and there is an empty stage. His duplicate comes there in the disguise of a performer.

There is an immediate connect as we all are performers if we consider our lives to be the platforms.

The ending phrase of the promo #SwanandKirkire points out “Door door se aate hain milne (pauses) zindagi se.”

Brilliant way to end the poetry depicting that theatre is also a respite, a mirror, a way of life.
