Lesbian wedding – History remained a witness as U.K saw the first ever interfaith lesbian wedding that took place on Saturday the 12^th of August.

Kalavati Mistry who happens to be a Hindu tied the knot with her Jewish soul mate Miriam Jefferson after twenty years of knowing each other.

The two first met in a training course in America and now both of them working for an interfaith organisation decided on getting married at the Chutney Ivy restaurant in Leicester. Kalavati Mistry, 48, who has her base in Leicester, stated: “I met Miriam when I was approximately 26 years old. I went to America on a training course and we were doing diversity work and training and that’s where I met Miriam Jefferson”.

It was a riot of colors at their Hindu wedding as they decided on getting married by following strict Hindu traditions. Both the brides were decked up in gorgeous traditional red and white bridal attires along with fresh and vibrant garlands, and most importantly both wore ‘Mangal Sutra’ necklaces to signify their marriage while adhering to strict norms of the Hindu traditions.

The couple did also have a Jewish wedding in San Antonio, Texas, which is the hometown of Miriam Jefferson sometime earlier this year.

It wasn’t an easy journey for both of them, especially Kalavati Mistry who grew up in a traditional and conservative family scenario. She says, “I grew up in a very traditional household, and really value the traditions and the culture”. She further adds, “To me, I wanted to spend my life with someone, in a union. My family have embraced Miriam very well. It was initially very difficult for me as an Asian gay woman. I knew from a very young age that I was gay. I knew during my teenage years that I was and it was very difficult, trying to tell your friends and family and honour the traditions.”

For Miriam Jefferson it wasn’t about getting married but spending her life with Kalavati that was of utmost importance to her. She says, “It was always very important to Kalavati to get married. Because her traditions and her culture are so important to her, it was important to me. My traditions are also very important to me. I was probably less invested in the institution of marriage, but I did want to have a life with Kalavati and that was one of the ways that I could do it.”

The couple will be residing in Miriam’s home in Texas as they get started while living together as a married couple that shall talk of their happily ever-after.

Karan Johar twins – It was in February this year that Bollywood director, Karan Johar became a parent to twins through surrogacy.

His joy knew no bounds when he brought his babies home in March after they had been hospitalised for around fifty days fighting complications following their pre-mature birth.

He had stated that initially he was quite scared when he first saw how small the babies were after they were born in a suburban Mumbai hospital. “All I wanted to do was hold them and protect them but they needed to be in the NICU. It was painful to see how tiny they were…” Karan Johar did share on Twitter.

The director has named the twins as per the names of his beloved parents. He named his son Yash after his late father director Yash Johar and if you notice his daughter has been named Roohi, which is but a rearrangement of his mother’s name that happens to be Hiroo.

In the recent times, Karan Johar was away to New York in order to host the 18th edition of the International Indian Film Academy Awards and he did take to social media to tell the world how much he missed his lovely babies. It was then that the Director happened to share the first picture of his twins. It is said that art is the best medium of expression and artist Raj Kamal Aich takes to art in protest of the 12% GST on sanitary napkins.

His magnificent artwork illustrates blood-soaked tampons and sanitary napkins and he has indeed left the world spellbound with this bold and beautiful not-so-conventional ‘period project’.

The recent implementation of 12% GST on sanitary napkins by the Central Government has resulted in an increase in the prices of the same.

It is said to be an apparently ridiculous move on part of the Indian Government for no taxes were levied on ‘sanskaari’ items like, bindi, or sindoor and also so-not-sanskaari items like, condoms. Questioning this discrepancy Artist Raj Kamal Aich sighs, “Why sanitary napkins and not condoms or bindi or sindoor? It is beyond my comprehension.” And we can only add that it is actually beyond ‘our’ comprehension for the matter.

He further stated in a recent interview, “It is ridiculous and insensitive of the govt to tax women for bleeding. I’ve only recently realised how expensive pads and tampons are. It may be convenient for urban people to shell out Rs 100 or Rs 160 for a box of tampons or pads, but what about rural women?

What about our maids?”

Aich intended to generalise the notions about the unconventional topic of periods. Breaking all taboos he re-imagined the blood soaked tampons as everyday objects of mundane life that he presents through his exceptionally creative art project.

It is through his powerfully bold artwork that he tries to convey that periods happen to be an intrinsic part of a woman’s life while questioning this 12% GST on sanitary napkins.

Aich had wanted to create something in a way that hadn’t been done before. He came across this idea during the time of World Menstrual Hygiene Day which was on the 28^th of May. He wanted to do something with real sanitary pads and tampons which have never been considered as objects of art or creativity. It was during the times of research that he realised that the Indian government was on the way to impose 12% GST on sanitary napkins and this left him disappointed to the core.

He voices his opinion through this outrageously bold project that depicts art with blood strained tampons and sanitary pads. The depiction of period blood with red in usually avoided in the public sphere and is supposedly considered grossly impure. When asked about the same, he says, “There is nothing gross about period blood and I wanted to send across that message. I had no other choice but to use red ink because I feel so strongly about this project”.

Raj Kamal Aich concludes by saying, “If you really love your woman, having her period is what makes her a woman and if you think she is beautiful then this is (period blood) is also beautiful.”

Kerala has recently added another feather to its crown by organising an exclusive beauty contest for the transgender community.

The first-ever transgender beauty contest that Kerala witnessed took place on the 15^th of June in Kochi.

This event was initiated by the Dhwayah Arts and Cultural society, a Transgender Association in Kerala and it was organised with the main objective of inclusion of the transgender community in the mainstream society of the contemporary times.

CPI(M) state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan inaugurated this unique event at the CIAL Convention Centre in Nedumbassery in Ernakulam that saw the selected final fifteen contestants walk the ramp for the crown entitled ‘Queen of Dhwayah 2017’ in front of eminent panel that consisted of Parvathy Omanakuttan, Ranjini Haridas, Miss India 2008 and Dr Sam and Dr Paul Mani from AHF India.

The contestants were especially groomed for the pageant by the popular make-up artist, Renju Renjimar and well known choreographer, Vishwalatha Sudarshan. “The idea is to give trans-people more confidence, to be active in the mainstream. Though Kerala has become more trans-friendly on paper, they are still discriminated against. We hope this pageant will help trans-people come out of their shells. I’m happy to say that more than 40 transgender people turned up just for the first audition,” Renju Renjimar had shared his thoughts in an interview about the same.

The final question of the event happened to be an ironical one which was ‘If you adopt a child, which gender would you prefer? Boy or girl?’

The panel declared Shyama the winner being impressed by her extraordinary take on the matter.

She answered:  “Compared to women, men harass transgender persons more, so I would like to adopt a boy and teach him how to respect transgender persons, and how they are equal to others. Let him grow up by learning to respect all equally”.

Shyama, 25, a post-graduate in Malayalam was crowned the ‘Queen of Dhwayah 2017’ amidst eminent judges, groomers and a jam packed audience who were full of cheer.

The event was attended by celebrities like Madhoo, Ramya Nambeeshan, Sadhika, Shamna Kasim Muktha, Krishna Prabha, singer Rimi Tomy and several others. Kerala Health Minister K.K Shailaja who attended as a guest had stated:

“Transgender persons are still not fully included by the society. There are engineering graduates who were denied jobs just because of their identity. The Kerala government has done many things for transgender persons. We have launched a lot of schemes for them. And we will continue to develop a lot of schemes so that transgender persons can come into the mainstream fully” after the commencement of the celebrations that marked the beauty contest.
