Killing someone is the is the most sinister thing to do to one’s family and there are people who take sadistic pleasure from it. Not necessarily they always have a purpose but it order to strike fear in hearts and be at the talking point, serial killers fed fat this unnerving fascination in them. We pray for a rethink to people who are against capital punishment because they unpardonable crime should have no mercy.

However, the style of murder made for saleable Hollywood script quite a few times and here are the Serial killer movies that were based on the most ruthless serial killers of all time:

1 – The Deliberate Stranger:

The killer was Ted Bunty and the character was essayed by Mark Harmon. Ted or Theodore Bunty was an American serial killer who charmed people with his charismatic personality and good looks. He was accused of kidnapping, raping and killing thousands of young women around 1970s. His madness reached such an unrelenting peak that he even revisited the secondary crime scenes to have sex with the decomposing bodies.

2 – Helter Skelter:

Killer was Charles Manson and the role was essayed by Steve Railsback. The murderer preyed on his followers as he was on a murder spree. It killed 5 people among which were the actress Sharon Tate. She was pregnant at that time.

3 – The Snowtown Murderers:

Killer was John Bunting and the role was essayed by Daniel Henshell. The killer was driven by a whim that he would rid the world of its ‘waste’ which made him to lure other people and made them kill for him. His scheme lasted from 1992-1999 which claimed 11 lives. Eight victims were found dead in acid vats with de-fleshed bodies hidden in a bank vault.

4 – Dahmer:

The killer was Jeffery Dahmer which was portrayed by Jeremy Renner. His stint of killing lasted from 1978-1991 where he tortured and murdered 17 male victims whom he perhaps raped too. Without stopping only here, he went on to eat their hearts and livers. Hence he was named as Milwaukee Cannibal.

5 – Gacy:

The killer was John Wayne Gacy and the role was essayed by Mark Holton. It was between 1972-1978, he sexually assaulted and murdered at least 33 boys hence fell in the category of America’s most notorious killers. He would even volunteer as a clown in the local children’s hospital and got highly regarded as a model citizen. When convicted, he was known as the Killer clown.

6 – Wolf Creek:

The killer was Evan Milat and the role was essayed by John Jarratt. His murderous stint lasted from 1989-1993 when he posed as a confidante to the Australian backpackers offering them a place near the fire and stabbing them to death eventually. He then shot them to the head multiple times.

7 – Monster:

The killer was Aileen Wuornos and the character was portrayed by Charlize Theron. Aileen’s father hanged himself to death in a prison after being accused of rape. Her mother had forsaken her as a baby and she engaged in a sexual act with her brother. She then went on to work as a prostitute in Central Florida. She killed 7 people between 1989-1990 citing that they killed them in self-defence.

Alien movies are made of all things heroic fighting all things evil.

These are the two binaries whose rise and fall prepare the narrative of sci-fi genre. But the evil-must-come-to-an-end climax too is impeccably luminous in those movies. Not to mention, aside from the huge money invested for special effects, the directors have to deal with every detail of the movies with astute precision so that we end up believing that aliens do exist.

Then there is cyclical horror and other arcane elements which keep us coming back for more. So, here’s mentioning a few sci-fi Alien movies that are our all-time favourites:

Alien movies –

1. Alien:

This sci-fi horror flick was directed by Ridley Scott which revolves around an extra-terrestrial creature who kills the crew of a spaceship and the stream of events that occur eventually. The starcast comprised of Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm and Yaphet Kotto.

2. Prometheus:

A team wants to track down the origin of mankind and finds an unfamiliar structure on the moon, only to realize they are not alone. This film is directed by Ridley Scott and starred by Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, and Charlize Theron.

3. Star Wars:

This American epic space opera was a major hit. Directed by George Lucas, it is starred by Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Peter Cushing, and Alec Guinness. A rebel alliance is led by Princess Leila that is aiming to destroy the Galactic Empire’s Space Station, the Death Star.

4. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial:

This film was released in 1982, is an American Science fiction directed by Steven Spielberg. It starred the likes of Carlo Rambaldi and Dennis Muren along with Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace, Robert MacNaughton, Drew Barrymore and Peter Coyote. This story focuses on Eliott, a lonesome boy who  finds a friend in an Extra-Terrestrial.

5. Independence Day:

This was released in 1996 and was an American Sci-fi disaster film which was co-written by Roland Emmerich. The film is starred by Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Mary McDonnell, Judd Hirsch, Margaret Colin, Randy Quaid, Robert Loggia, James Rebhorn, Vivica A. Fox, and Harry Connick, Jr. and revolves around a group which has people from all walks of life who unite in the Nevada desert to escape the disaster caused by an alien attack.

6. Men in Black:

Released in 1977, the film was directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. This sci-fi action comedy features two agents assigned with a secret mission by a secret organization called The Men in Black to probe into the extraterrestrial lifeforms who inhabit on Earth. The film stars Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith.

7. Total Recall:

Released in 1990, this was an American sci-fi action film directed by Paul Verhoeven which stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rachel Ticotin, and Sharon Stone. The film which is loosely based on Philip K. Dick story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” depicts the life of a construction worker who is haunted by a mysterious woman apparently from Mars in his dreams.

Hollywood movies adaption – Bollywood was always upfront about drawing inspiration from Hollywood movies, some they fared while some they malformed.

One thing for sure, Bollywood directors are well-versed of the benchmark Hollywood releases and have pen-paper readied always to take note. In rather brazenly moves, they copied the movies scene to scene only chanting the socio-cultural backdrop.

We will talk about here a few movies, presumably Hollywood movies adaption, we loathed.

Hollywood movies adaption –

1. Ek main aur ekk tu:

This film was directed by Shakun Batra and an adaptation of What Happened in Vegas starred by Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher. The English movie was a laughter riot freckled with right amount of emotions but in the Hindi version, we found no chemistry between the protagonist characters, forget relating to their life.

2. Manorama-Six feet under:

This Hindi movie was a remake of Roman Polanski’s Chinatown from the neo-noir genre. This Hindi version went closer to the masterpiece of Polanski but failed miserably at some points. We are not saying the Hindi remake was a dud, it had tight suspense and actors like Vinay Pathak, Abhay Deol, Raima Sen but we are still not as impressed.

3. Deewange:

Perhaps Anees Bazmee was kidding us, he could not even make a seasoned actor like Akshay Kumar match Richard Gere’s standards, we will pass the blame on the director because he could not exploit the actors although Ajay Devgn fared for the effortless actor he is.

4. Phir Milenge:

This movie was an adaptation of Jonathan Demme’s film Philadelphia which starred Tom Hanks as an HIV afflicted person. In the Hindi remake, Revathy changed the protagonist t a woman who gets fired by her employers but still didn’t match the eloquence level of Tom Hanks.

5. Josh:

Josh had a starcast of Shah Rukh Khan, Chandrachur Singh, Aishwarya Rai but was not as convincing as the Hollywood counterpart West Side Story. May be the over dramatic nuances that rained in their parade.

6. Baazigar:

This was adapted from another American neo-noir called A Kiss Before Dying which Abbas-Mastan adapted into a Bollywood Masala-flick which was a box-office success but a sheer injustice to the English version.

7. Sangharsh:

This crime thriller still unnerves us but the film it adapted the plot from was gripping to the point of madness, it is called Silence of the Lambs, you have perhaps heard of the movie. However, Ashutosh Rana was phenomenal in the movie but Priety Zinta failed miserably to match the brilliance of Jodie Foster. We are not impressed much!

8. We are family:

This was adapted from the English romantic-comedy Stepmom which lacked life. The film seemed out of bounds and no chemistry has been established within the characters expect Kajol had fared her share. All in all, this movie was not even close to Step Mom.

9. Mohabbatein:

It was the remake of Dead Poets Society which too was dipped in the Bollywood masala thereby failing to match the standards of the original movie. Amitabh Bachhan’s stringent character we loved but Shah Rukh Khan’s manoeuvrings to the students to break the status quo with dreamy notions about love and other not-grounded-on-reality standpoints did make us raise eyebrows!

These are Hollywood movies adaption – we brought forth the names that didn’t leave us awestruck as much but there are many competent remakes too we would urge you to watch.

It stars Matt Damon as Jason Bourne who, after being afflicted with amnesia, finds out his hidden talents. He knows a great deal of things like figuring out an exit route from an emergency, killing a predator with his bare hands etc.

6. The Matrix Trilogy:

This is a nerdy sci-fi thriller that takes your breath away. It deals with computer hackers, artificial intelligence, and cyber-reality. It is also laced with philosophy and humanity with some pseudo-technical intricacies. You may get mixed up with facts in the plot but overall it’s enjoyable.

7. The Star Wars Trilogy:

It raised the bar of space-opera which shook the watchers and left enamoured. There may be only handful of people who haven’t had watched Star Wars until now. The plots are replete with twists which, along with the lightslabber battle on the Death Star keeps us glued to our seats.

8. The Godfather Trilogy:

This film is adapted from the Mario Puzo’s novel about a Mafia family which stars Marlon Brando as a desiccated patriarch and a brazenly shrewd Al Pacino. The film delves deep in the lives of America’s young Sicilian immigrant which is portrayed by Robert De Niro. So you see, the heavyweight names prove the worth of the film.

9. Lord of the Rings Trilogy:

With the idyllic scenery of New Zealand in the backdrop and high-end special effects, this film ticks all the right boxes for you. This trilogy shows the triumph of friendship and fellowship against all odds.

10. Indiana Jones Trilogy:

These films revolve around the adventures of an action hero whose character inspired a series of films like The Da Vinci Code, National Treasure, Tomb Raider and many more. These ‘action-comedy’ series borders on humour too and the action sequences are ahead of its time.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 will once again star cute actress Nia Vardalos in a movie based on a script she wrote (she also penned the first one).
