Engineering student – India has no dearth of young people vying to be engineers.

In fact, every second person you meet is either studying to become an engineer or is already an engineer. Most of the middle-class parents think that being an engineer is a sure-shot way for their children to do well in life. 1. Are you an IITian?

Being a student of any of the branches of Indian Institute of Technology or IIT, India’s premier engineering institute is a matter of pride. But, only a few crack the excruciatingly difficult entrance exams and manage to get into IIT. The lesser mortals end up studying in different colleges. Of course, there is not a death of engineering colleges, so anybody want to get into engineering will find a seat in one of them. But, people need to stop asking engineering students whether they are from IIT because, hey, not everybody gets into it.

2. You must be a porn addict

Engineering students lead a stressful life. Classes, assignments, projects, dissertations – they are always dealing with different things at once. The academic pressure takes a toll on them. So, people tend to believe the one thing they must be doing in abundance to release that stress is watching porn.

3. You must go to a better college

Everybody wants to get into a good college. Nobody wants to study in a mediocre college. But, friends and relatives often tell them to get into a ‘better’ college. Well, this is something they know already and are trying for the same. There are several entrance exams that determine which college you will eventually get into. Only you know what goes into preparing for these exams. The people, who give you advice on everything, will not sit for them.

4. Stop wasting time

One thing you hear all the time is not to waste time. The whole world thinks you are young, so you will engage yourself in unproductive things that will take you away from your duties. You must tell them that while you are a sincere student, you need some time off from studies to rejuvenate yourself and then, start afresh.

5. Why do you have a low attendance percentage?

This is something your parents ask you to when they get a letter from your college stating that you have a lower attendance percentage. While you might not want toadmit this, most of the students studying in engineering colleges, end up bunking a lotof classes. This is something you correct at a later stage in your educational career but initially, when you see most of yourfriends doing it, you cannothelp but do itas well

     6.You should have tried something else

While engineering is the most favoured career option for most people, with so many people becoming engineers and lesser jobs to accommodate them,people have started wondering whether it is the best career option after all. If you are doing exceptionally well as a student, there is a less chance of somebody discussing with you butif you are an average or above average student, this is something youmust brace yourself for.

7. Do you have a girlfriend?

With novels talking about and glorifying campus romances, a lot of people would want to know whether you have a love-life or not. This is a question that would be posed by anybody ranging from your friends to your parents. If you are studying someplace away from home, people would be more curious to know what you are up to. There would be times when even you try hard to convince somebody that you are single, he could not believe you.

8. Please solve this equation for me

When you an engineering student, you will be considered be one of the brightest people around by your youngersiblings studying in schools or colleges. They will often pester you to help them with their studies and ask you to help them with solving mathematical or scientific problems or equations. Since they think so highly of you, you will have no option but to oblige them.

9. Are you planning to go abroad?

A lot of students after graduating from engineering colleges fancy the thought of going abroad for better prospects. You might have already come across several people who have moved to a foreign country for greener pastures. A higher paying job and a better lifestyle is what attract them to a foreign land. You relatives would be curious to know whether you are planning to do the same.

10. When are you planning to get married?

Engineers or prospective engineers are hot properties among people looking for young men to get their and daughters married to. The amount of people asking this question to you depends on how well you are doing in your career. If you are an IITian there would be no dearth of people asking this question to you.

You face a lot of challenges and difficulties on your way to obtain that coveted engineering degree. You have your identity and journey as an engineering student. So what would what you do if you opened the door and found an intruder sleeping in your bed? I am sure you won’t do what this woman did. And her response will surely shock you.

As per reports, when a Tunisian woman discovered a drunk man in her Bur Dubai flat asleep in her bed, she clicked a selfie (Yes you read it right) and posted it on a social networking site before alerting UAE police. Bizarre!

This is what she wrote “I got home and found a drunk intruder asleep in my bed. He tried to steal, but he failed”.

Looks like even the shock and fear couldn’t prevent her from clicking this selfie.

Later Director of Bur Dubai police station Colonel Abdullah Khadem shared, “Investigations revealed that the man was visiting the watchman of the building, who is his friend. He consumed alcohol and felt sleepy. He sneaked into the woman’s room and slept in her bed,”

The intruder was later arrested and charged with trespassing.

Now there is something very wrong with this world!

The Bihar mass cheating videos, when released last week, spread like wildfire. Every news channel in India wanted to telecast the desperation of parents in helping their ward clear the board exams.

I mean who wouldn’t want to miss the action wherein parents and relatives climbed walls of the examination centre just to throw a few chits towards their children, right? The video did, however, leave many people awestruck.

One would only have have to wonder what the local government will do as a precautionary measure to ensure such repetitions never occur. Maybe they are trying even, though it is unclear as to how they would bring it into picture.

Nevertheless, it is Lalu Prasad Yadav, the former Chief Minister of Bihar, has the perfect solution.

While addressing the audience at a recent function, the Bihar politician said, “Had it been my government we would have given books to examinees to write”.

Isn’t it thoughtful of him? Who would not want one such person leading them on an international scale?!!

Seriously, think about it. Picture around 60 students in every classroom writing answers to the questions diligently…WITH A BOOK RESTING BY THEIR SIDE FOR REFERENCE!!!

Yadav’s support of the open-book exam will ensure that no student fails an examination in the foreseeable future. Wouldn’t parents love that; wouldn’t children appearing for the exams love that?

If this exam system, for some reason, gets implemented, this is how our daily lives would change –

– No mother, before her child leaves for the exam hall, will have to take the pain of preparing dahi-shakkar, which apparently brings good luck.

– Parents would be spared the risks of climbing tall buildings to help their offspring clear one of the most important tests of their lifetime. Think of all the possible accidents the open-book system could successfully evade.

– Deepika Padukone making an appearance on one of the TV channels and speaking about depression created a lot of hullabaloo. With examination being one of the reasons for depression, which further leads students to committing suicide, open-book examination actually makes sense. No more killing self!

– Again, parents can live freely knowing that their wards would not practice any form of self-harm. No mother in Indian history would ever recite the dialogue from 3 Idiots like Farhan Qureshi’s mother did “Pareshan hai bechara. Khuda na kare Raju jaisa kuch kar baithe to”.

The Indian audience, especially in regards with Bollywood movies, is a mystery to me; gullible even. I arrived at this conclusion some time ago and maintain that same notion even today because people, for some unknown reason, choose to watch the crappiest films making them superhit.

Those days no longer exist when ten movies released in a span of two months. And those movies were good. They made sense. Nowadays, however, it is about a film making a ton of money over the weekend or it is declared a flop.

Directors of Indian films have realised that and everyone wants to savour their own share now, don’t they? They invest huge sums in production, hire the most popular actors and make CGI a part of the shoot.

Did I miss something?

Of course, THE SCRIPT!!!

Now, where is that?

Bollywood is no longer the same industry that it was a couple of decades ago. Something by the name “100-crore club” has become quite popular (…and infamous if you don’t mind me saying).

Even before a film’s trailer is out, the casting, more often than not, decides whether or not it will make 100 crores at the box-office.

R. Murugadoss’s Ghajini was the first film to accomplish this milestone. Although it was not a bad film (considering it had an adapted concept), some of the movies that entered this (un)popular club later were total disasters.

Unfortunately, Dhoom 3 is one of the movies to feature in this category. Unfortunate because the movie is so bad that it made no sense and yet ended up making over 500 crores at the box-office. Also, Dhoom is the highest grossing film series in Bollywood.

Shah Rukh Khan’s two worst films belong to the years 2013 and 2014 when he starred in Chennai Express and Happy New Year, respectively. The films earned 542 crores and 383 crores respectively. Both movies come from Shah Rukh’s own production house Red Chillies Entertainment. Where Rohit Shetty, the director, failed the South Indian (especially Tamilian) audience by sticking to the stereotypes with Chennai Express, the latter film was loosely based on Hollywood successful film Ocean’s Eleven.

Salman Khan is no stranger when it comes to the 100-crore club. He started off with Dabangg in 2010 and has never stopped since. His films Ready, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger, Dabangg 2, Jai Ho and Kick have all crossed the 100-crore ‘barrier’. Though the first Dabangg movie did make a bit of sense, other movies were just too hard to watch. Yet, their overall income outdid the production costs bringing the director and the production houses massive profits.

Bang Bang! the Hrithik Roshan-Katrina Kaif starrer too got added to the 100-crore category despite receiving mixed reviews from critics. It was an action-packed “entertainer” that was an evident remake of the Hollywood hit ‘Knight and Day’ starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. Subhash K. Jha, renowned movie critic, even said, “Bang Bang gets the boredom quotient bang-on”. And the irony of it all was that it released on 2^nd October, Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday (a preacher of non-violence).

What this list tells us that many films with budget of 100 crore rupees do not have a strong content. Their main objective is to recompense their expenses and earn profits.

The modern times have seen remarkable films that did not get the desired recognition. Films like Mastram, Filmistaan and Sulemaani Keeda, to name a few, had exceptional content that the Indian audience would have connected with and liked.

However, it is the fancy trend that catches the eye of the current public. Throw in an item number with a renowned female star and the movie makes more money.

Lack of original script, a result of which is Hollywood adaptation of movies, is affecting Bollywood adversely (…or at least the section of audience that cares for good screenplay). Alas! It will only be in time that we know if Bollywood directors are capable of making sensible flicks or if they decide to stick to their intention of material gains.

Is it just me or does anyone else gets bothered with the constant yapping that we hear every day about social causes like saving the planet or certain endangered species?

Don’t you get bugged when you constantly listen to environmentalists trying to feed you stuff that you don’t want to participate in voluntarily?

In all honesty, I would like people to focus on other important tasks at hand than trying to engage in “social causes”that are beyond our control. I mean, why would someone want to interfere with the nature?

There is no present; just the near future and recent past

People always talk about living in the present and forgetting past or not thinking about future too much. Sounds fair, doesn’t it? Well, what if I told you that there is no future? You must be thinking I have gone bonkers. The way we decide that the moment we live in is present is through time and time waits for no one. The clock is always ticking. You think about capturing a moment in the present and it slips right past you. No wonder we can’t get things done on time. The bottom line is that there is no present; all you have are the near future and the recent past.

Worrying about Global Warming

Global warming is natural and not caused by humans

Global warming is another concern for many people around the world. They worry about water, air as well as soil. The earth is getting warmer and warmer by the day, they say. Well, that’s change and it is not caused by us. That is all nature.

The planet has been around for four-and-a-half billion years, whereas humans have existed for a hundred thousand years, maybe two hundred thousand. During its time of existence, earth has seen some major catastrophes and it has prevailed. Do humans seriously think that a plastic bag can ruin the earth? The planet is not going anywhere people, we are!

Have you noticed the number of golf courses that we have around the world? They occupy a lot of space and for a game that no one really enjoys or cares about. Golf is an elitist game and exhibits plain arrogance of people who can spare time off their schedule to knock tiny balls around with a crooked stick. So what do we actually worry about? How about homelessness? Can these golf courses be used to build affordable houses? Sure, why not.

How awkward can a shoulder squeeze and whispering in the public be? Well, ask Stephanie Carter, the wife of Ashton Carter, the newly sworn-in Defence Secretary of the world’s strongest military force in US. Yes, you may ask who the intruder was. No, it was certainly not the husband. None other than Vice President Joe Biden could have gone this awry to touch and squeeze someone else’s wife’s shoulders! Am I sounding too obnoxious? Well, then what is your idea of Joe Biden’s act in public during the swear-in ceremony of Ashton Carter?

If squeezing Stephanie’s shoulder and keeping his hands on them for 28 long seconds was not enough, he also had to get too close to her to whisper something in her ear or probably was it to smell the beautiful fragrance of her shampoo? (*laughs*)

Even as Ash Carter made his entry into the defence scene of US, the public seemed not to be paying attention to his words as they had ‘Biden with his Bidenism’ around. Before this he has acted as the jester when he has called ‘jobs’ a 3-letter word, or that ‘the President has a stick’ and mind you, he is really good at it. He does not stop at this, but goes on to cuddle you, grope you, squeeze you. Ok. Let’s not get any further into this.
We would not like to disagree when The Onion mocked Biden as ‘an administration screw-up and a boozy womanizer.’

When Senator Chris Coons sweared in as the Senate, Biden did not back off from whispering in the ears of Maggie, the Senate’s daughter, which Coons later addressed as words of encouragement. Maggie, of course, looked much uncomfortable with the close-up.

While Biden might say that he sure does not make anyone uncomfortable and that his familiarity with the people swearing in gives him the authority to touch their wives and daughters in an awkward intrusion of their space and his close sources deeming his act as nothing but his “charm”, we feel that he either tries to exert power over the person swearing in by touching their female family members publicly, or cannot keep his hands off them.
Guess it’s time to make a rulebook on ‘hands-off’ policies especially for the VPs of the State.

It is no secret that the recently concluded AIB roast was a success. It was filthy and derogatory, but a massive accomplishment considering the society we live in.

However, it was only a matter of time since someone spoke against it. An FIR complaint has been filed against Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor and Karan Johar for using filthy language on the show.

The concept of roasting celebrities is new to India, but not overseas. Comedy Central, which is America’s basic cable and satellite television channel, has organised roasts in the past. The list of renowned celebrities, who have let themselves be roasted, includes the likes of Pamela Anderson, Bob Saget, Donald Trump and James Franco, to name a few.

This was India’s first ever celebrity roast and it had controversy written all over it even before it was shot.

The FIR was filed by Vinod Tawde, the Maharashtra culture minister, who also termed the AIB roast video uploaded on YouTube as “vulgar”.  FIR filed against AIB Show by him. History has been witness to coarseness and profanity uniting religious groups in India and this time it is no different. The Maharashtra Christian Youth Forum and the Brahmin Ekta Seva Sanstha have come together against this “filth”, too.

Yes, the show was derogatory; it was filthy. But that’s how it was supposed to be. The quips were full of sexual innuendos (‘sex insults’ would seem like an appropriate term); it had contents of racism, homophobia and misogyny. People, who saw the show, would agree that the jokes were more mean than funny.

But hey, everyone went home laughing their lungs out and holding no grudges, didn’t they?

The conservatives are bummed nonetheless and someone will have to pay the repercussions. ‘We do not like insult jokes’ seems like the message sent across AIB by the complainers.

Talking about repercussions, Bollywood appears as the victim, as the latest news comes from MNS saying they will not allow any movie release until Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor apologise. Seems like a political gimmick, yes?

Balaji Telefilms is one of the biggest contributors to television programming in the country. Alongside it, there are several other production houses that keep the audience entertained.

Nevertheless, there are certain TV shows that should not have gone through production. They were that bad and a total waste of time.

Sacch Ka Saamna (STAR Plus) 

Arguably, Sacch Ka Saamna is the most controversial show to run on Indian television. Created by Howard Schultz, this Indian show was the Indian variant of American game show ‘The Moment of Truth’. During the show, the contestants were asked 21 questions, some of which were too private and not to be divulged in public. The show, hosted by Rajeev Khandelwal, ran for two seasons. As the episodes progressed weekly, the show received negative criticism for the personal attacks and the possible traumas that the participants bore.

Rakhi Ka Swayamvar (NDTV Imagine)

This show hosted by television and Bollywood actor Ram Kapoor aired in mid-2009. In all honesty, this show made a mockery of the institution of marriage by telecasting a wedding that no one cared about on television. Sixteen men competing against one another to win Rakhi Sawant’s hand in marriage was the entire concept of the show. The Bollywood diva eventually got engaged to Elesh Parujanwala, a Canada-based businessman. The couple later broke off the engagement after which speculations were rife about Rakhi doing the show for  money and Elesh participating in it for exposure.

Emotional Atyachar (Bindass)

Emotional Atyachar was the adapted version of American show called ‘Cheaters’. Basically, the show revolved around couples doubting one another’s commitment asking for a loyalty test. The show was hosted by Angad Bedi in the first season; Pravesh took over as the show’s host for the remaining three seasons. The show was heavily criticised for crossing personal barriers and hurting sentiments of the viewers and spreading vulgarity in the process. Even the Law commission sent the channel a legal notice stating that it was exceeding the limits of decency.

Rakhi Ka Insaaf (NDTV Imagine)

This show had controversy written all over it. The show’s host, need we say the name, used excessive obscene language while passing on her ‘justice’ towards participants. She has also been accused of abetting the suicide of one of show’s participants. Due to the complaints, the programme’s airing was shifted from prime time to 11.00 p.m.

There is no doubt that Ekta Kapoor is the queen of television industry and a contributor to numerous shows that kept the audiences glued to TV screens. Ekta did have her share of good days in producing television series; however, the shows released post the year 2000 have been quite painful to watch. These programmes are not only exaggerated, but long-running too. Every single time one of these shows ended, a part of the audience heaved a sigh of relief. Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s surprise retirement from Test Cricket did shock many people spread across cricket-playing nations.

It was also clear that his deputy Virat Kohli would permanently replace him as the skipper of the Indian Test squad playing in Australia at the moment.

What, however, was not clear was who would replace Kohli as the team’s vice-captain. Three names have come up – Ravichandran Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane and…Ishant Sharma.

Yes, the third name has left many people dumbfounded.

The lanky “pace” bowler has never been a consistent member of the Indian team, thanks either to poor performance or injuries. Over time, his bowling speed has diminished, too, which has been one of the main contributors for his wicket taking inability.

With 59 Test matches to show on his résumé, Ishant is the most experienced player in the current Indian squad.

So, is that the only criterion for his vice-captain candidacy?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will soon be making the official announcement in regards with this vacant position. Sharma being promoted to India’s Vice-Captain will take the cricketing world by surprise.

Vice-captains of other international teams have one accolade or two to justify their selection. Ishant, on the other hand, has dug India’s grave on numerous times, as they have slumped from the winning position only to lose the matches.

Sharma has been labelled as “Indian cricket’s villain” on numerous occasions. India has always yearned for a full-time fast bowler. It was a similar situation in the late 2000 when Sharma made his debut against Bangladesh on May 25, 2007.

In a rare scenario, the Sunrisers Hyderabad bowler is also famous for bowling one of the best spells bowled by an Indian. While playing at Perth, he used his height (and pace at that time) to his full advantage. Ishant bowled a superb spell to then Australian captain Ricky Ponting, in the process getting his wicket and eventual victory for India.

Since then, the Indian pace man has been in and out of the team consistently. At present, his bowling average in Test is 37, which definitely does not speak high of his skills.

The hullabaloo surrounding India’s next Test vice-captain will soon come to a conclusion.

Although Ravichandran Ashwin does appear as a strong contender, with Rahane being less experienced in comparison, things might work in Ishant’s favour.

There is no question that the Ishant Sharma, which cricket saw in 2008 in Australia, has disappeared into oblivion. Nevertheless, if he is appointed as the new vice-captain of team India, it will be interesting to see how he contributes towards the team’s progress.

Men, in particular, are drawn to such ads. They tend to remember everything that the ad shows, including the models’ names; ask them the company’s name and they won’t be able to recall it.

Don’t you think this is unfortunate for the brands, in a way?

Take Axe body spray as an example. The brand has produced numerous ads, all comprising a similar theme, but different models. The female as well as the male models get sexier with every new advertisement. The men used by the brand are close to perfect, leaving women drooling when the ad ends.

UCLA’s Dr Ian Cook is quoted as saying, “Watch your brain and watch your wallet”. It is fairly relevant as most ads do not make sense and yet succeed in making sales, thanks to the sexy models used in them.

Weddings are fun….for some people. Many, however, find the experience tiring and with December being the wedding season, this time of the year is the most hated one for this lot.

It brings numerous inconveniences, as people are forced to opt for absenteeism and travel several kilometres just so the groom and the bride can get to know the attendees personally.

Personally, I dislike attending weddings, the reasons being the place is overcrowded, the elders asking when you would get married and free food, to name a few. Free food would entice many people, but not me.

Nevertheless, I attend a wedding as long as the person getting married is really close to me. On other instances, I decide to skip the event altogether.

Here are a few reasons that I have used in the past and you can use, too, in order to avoid attending a wedding ceremony –

If the wedding is on a Saturday or a Sunday, you can use the three-day weekend as the reason to evade the wedding experience. You can make the excuse that you are visiting some other destination with your family or friends.

People often do not report to work, in case the wedding is set to take place on a weekday. But if you genuinely wish to dodge the wedding, being honest might help you get away with your absence at the event. Just tell them that you can’t skip work, but you are happy for the couple.

You can also blame the harsh weather, if it is a truthful reason. You can then rest the entire day, watching your favourite movie with popcorn and drinks sitting beside you.

If you did not like the couple much, you can steal their thunder, in a way, by announcing your own promotion date clashing with the wedding.

You can also disappear for a few weeks. Do not contact your friends or the bride/groom. You can come back to the social circuit once the wedding is done and explain your reason to not attending the wedding.

You can also use your botched appearance as an excuse to not attend the ceremony. Tell them that the day before you went to groom yourself, but the experience backfired and you were in no position to attend the wedding in that condition.

Tell the bride/groom that you had a crush on their better half. If you never liked the person ever and were forced to stay friends with them, maybe this would help you to get rid of them totally. Good riddance!

While using words correctly can leave a lasting impression on others, grammatical slip-ups can make you look silly and may even cause you to ‘lose’ your job, ‘literally’.

Your and You’re

Well, to clear the confusion, they are not the same word. Period. Your is a possessive pronoun which is used to show something belonging to you. ‘Your house’, ‘your car’ or ‘your blog’ is how you should put it while ‘you’re’ is used as an abbreviation for ‘you are’. The latter is used in a separate sense such as: ‘You’re a good writer’.

Loose and Lose

These words are commonly used in place of each other, which changes the meaning of a sentence completely. While loose is the opposite of tight, lose refers to loss.

The dress can be loose but you lose a match!

It’s and Its

Apostrophes cannot make nouns plural. Apostrophes are either used to indicate possession or used as a contraction. It’s is a contraction of ‘It is’ or ‘it has’ while ‘Its’ is again used to refer to an object that belongs to something. You may say it’s just an article but its importance is much known.

I, Me and Myself

When asked for an introduction in college or during a job interview, many of us say Myself so and so. It is incorrect. There are instances when you can simply use I or me rather than using ‘myself’. Saying that ‘she and myself are best friends’ can make you look silly and induce much humour for others. However, saying that ‘I keep her secrets to myself’ is apt.

When you refer yourself along with a third person, the use of I is apt just like saying Neha and I are going for the tournament today but when using the phrase at the end of a sentence, it is never ‘I’ but ‘me’ as in ‘the tournament was witnessed by Neha and me.’

Affect, Effect and Impact

Affect is a verb which means something that will be positive or negative for you, while effect is the end result and is often a noun. However, you cannot use impacted in place of affected.

Their, They’re and There

Many people use these words interchangeably. Little do they know that all these words have different meanings and should be used in separate context. ‘There’ is used to denote the position of an object while ‘their’ refers to something belonging to a group of people. ‘They’re’, on the other hand is an abbreviated form of ‘they are’. For instance,

Their company is located there. They’re pretty rich people.

To, Too and Two

While ‘to’ is used to refer to an object moving in a particular direction and is a preposition used to join sentences, ‘too’ means also and ‘two’ is a number. Isn’t it simple?

Then and Than

While then shows sequence of events and also refers to ‘in addition to’, than is used as a method to compare nouns. When you want to speak about an event that happened at a point of time, you address that time as then.

Historic is to denote an important event while historical refers to an incident that has already occurred in the past.

The battle of Plassey was a historicevent. The historical battle has emerged to be a legendary incident in the history of India.

Could of, Would of, Should of

As writing has become more colloquial now-a days, words get slurred all the time. Could’ve, would’ve or should’ve are the right contractions but when spoken it sounds much similar to could of, would of and should of, thus creating much confusion. This is a very common mistake but one that is easily correctable.

Fewer and Less

Countable items are said to be fewer while the sorts that are not quantifiable are said to be less.

He has made few movies but all his movies have gained much less acclaim than expected.

Principle and Principal

When used as a noun, Principal is the one highest in rank, as in the School Principal. As an adjective, it is the chief or the most important part in a set or group. Principle is always used as a noun which denotes a fundamental or basic truth, law, standard or class.

Literally and Figuratively

Your expenses have not reached sky high levels literally. Literally refers to things that have actually happened and are not said to denote a metaphor or analogy. Things that can be addressed as metaphors are said in the figurative sense, not LITERALLY.

You cannot use didn’t with a past tense verb. It is always the present tense verb used in conjunction with didn’t. But it is generally assumed that since didn’t is in the past tense, the verb to be used after that should also be in past tense. It is always we didn’t buy the book and I didn’t use the data.

The prompt usage of Present Continuous tense

People like to put every piece of information in the present continuous tense by using statements such as I am liking this book or I am having a lot of ideas. In such cases, it is the present tense that is to be used and the sentences should be I like this book or I have a lot of ideas. When the action continues to happen even as you speak, present continuous tense is to be used.

 Affinity to ‘only’

We also love to add ‘only’ at the end of our sentences much often. We like to say I got this car now only instead of saying I got this car recently. While the word ‘only’ should be used to describe ‘one of a kind’ or something ‘unique’ such as this is the only possible way out.

Using wrong prepositions

When we have to make choices or wish to compare something, ‘to’ or ‘over’ is the correct preposition to use instead of ‘from’. However, a common mistake is to say I prefer movies from books when it should be I prefer movies to books or movies over books.

Brought and Bought

Clearly, these two are words with different meanings. Brought signifies bringing something while bought refers to buying. When you refer to buying a new dress, you say bought but when you mean to say that your friend has got a gift for you, you would rather say s/he brought a gift for me.

Some other common mistakes are using lay instead of lie or lend instead of borrow as well as omitting important punctuations such as comma, colon and semi-colon, but though these are small changes, they change the meaning of the sentences and give a hilarious tone to them.

Most Indians would agree with me when I say that recent times have not been even close to best for women in the country.

Some men not being able to keep their hands off women has resulted in the fairer sex being subject to constant ogling, eve teasing and rapes.

This has left us wondering what the government and the society, on the whole, is doing to preserve their liberty and at the same time, defend their honour.

It would be lying if we said that the government has not taken steps to curb the attacks on women. However, some of these measures are so ridiculous that we end up feeling bad that we have such bad leaders.

Let us take a look at some of these outlandish impositions from women’s everyday life –

Having a separate ladies’ compartment in trains and metros make them easy victims to groping and eve teasing. Picture this – over a hundred women, old and young, crammed within a single space; doesn’t it make them an easy victim to abuse?

The eve teasing and rape cases have resulted in some Indian politicians making the most dreadful remarks about women. Telling women how to dress is not the solution. Rapists and oglers do not have a type; to them, a burqa clad woman and a woman wearing skirt are the same.

Elders of the society have also blamed women staying out too late as the reason for them being the victim to heinous crimes. This practically says that the society has given up on defending women and the only resort is taking a defensive measure which might be against the interest of some women.

Women are also advised against drinking alcohol. If they are attending a corporate party or a social gathering, drinking for them is off limits.

Shifting their residence to certain locations is barred, too. If a certain neighbourhood has witnessed violence against women, relocating to that vicinity is a strict no.

Some women like working out at night. Thanks (..or no thanks) to the violent crimes against females going running alone at night is not permitted.

The elders even recommend not talking back to harassers, as it might result in a violent altercation. Women are expected to lower their heads and walk away from the scene.

Some families even object to women eating foods like hotdogs, banana or ice cream in public. Where some of them are labelled as penis-shaped foods, others just garner leering attention, which might eventually lead to an uncomfortable situation for them.
