This thought itself used to bring trembles to me. But as I said above that life totally goes in a contrast when we grow up. Now if I say that I want to stay in a hostel, it will be like, “Ghar pe raho, koi zaroorat nahi hai”.

College life is one of the best days you can have in your life. Other than the school days of course! And the icing on the cake is the amazing hostel life you ever had. What? Never been to hostel? Well then here are the things you really have missed!

Many firsts in your life!

Hostel life marks to be the life when you are all footloose and live a carefree life. You feel like a free bird and feel like trying out anything and everything. The first sip of alcohol or the smoke and not to mention it can be the place for your first showcase of the porn movie!

Home away from home

Hostel is surely a place which is just home away from home and you would never like to stay anywhere else other than a hostel. Not bathing for 3 consecutive days, watching movies back to back for the entire Sunday, where will you find this kind of freedom anywhere else?

Everyone can go nostalgic how they used to sneak out of the hostel and then go for an amazing night out around the city by simply roaming about and having great fun with fellow mates.

Special privileges

Hostel people also enjoy special privileges at college as well as when they go home during holidays. For parents it’s just like their kid has come after so long and they feel like pampering them as much as they can, while in college teachers take special care of the kids who stay away from home.

Hostel food

That 2 am Maggie or a simple egg roll at a moving cart near the hostel gate, or the tasteless hostel food everything used to be special in the hostel life. The fight for food is the real thing you will realize in hostel.

They have a solution for everything…from how to pata-o the canteen wala into giving you credit to coming with interesting ideas to get over a heartbreak, these guys will always be there for you, no matter what. Whenever a situation demands them to act, they would put on their game faces and say ‘yes, mam!’ Keep this lot close to you as they are gems and should be preserved!

‘Let’s eat!’
Whether it’s during the morning lecture or an afternoon one…these fellas are always up for a good meal. If you have had a bunch of friends saying, ‘chal yaar, khaake projects karte hain’ or ‘aaj khaane mei kya hai?’ in the middle of an important lecture, slot them under this category. They know about all the fancy joints, budget hotels and local specialities like it’s their only goal in life. Hungry kya? In doston ke paas jaa! Also, these are the guys who are always well stocked with magi, biscuits, take-aways and other tit bits.

‘When is the lec?’
They will keep pinging you to find out lecture timings, but would never turn up for any. They are always home-bound and when they do come to the college, it’s to sit for an exam or to face the principal. But these guys are streetsmart and generous, who are always ready to help you. They might steal your notes and generally be a mess, but when it comes to throwing a party or hanging out, these guys live it up like no other!

And yes, these are the best days of my life!!… I’m an engineering student of SRM University, Chennai. And our canteen is the best anyone could ever get! Not only does it have the most amazing food, but it’s the most fun place to be with friends too.

Just the other day, I and my friends were late for one of the lectures, and the professor wouldn’t let us in. So, what did we do? Turned around and went straight to the canteen. We spent the entire afternoon yapping and yapping! And I can’t remember the no. of times we’ve bunked boring lectures and ended up in the canteen.

The canteen is like the most happening place of our college. So that’s exactly where we held our “War of the Bands’ competition. And now, our band has got fame overnight! And the entire credit goes to our canteen. If it weren’t for its amazing ambience and its welcoming atmosphere, we wouldn’t have had such a big turnout.

The food is extraordinary here. You have everything here, right from Punjabi chole to the South Indian masala dosa, from Chinese noodles, to Mexican delights. And the world’s best chaai – ‘The chocolate chaai’. Yup, you read it right, the chocolate chaai. One sip, and it would melt your soul!

All in all, this canteen is every student’s paradise. I would always cherish the wonderful times I’ve spent here throughout my life, even after years of passing out of this college.

College canteen – When I was still under graduation I used to think of my college canteen as a place where I could go only to satiate my hunger and a small time hangout spot.

I used the term small time here because during the peak hours, such was the rush that people entering the canteen were only supposed to eat , not even sit there and have juice or talk about lectures.

There are a number of reasons you miss college life, once of them being your college canteen. After I graduated I realized that it is not a place you seek only when you’re hungry, but for many other reasons. Here are a few.

College canteen days –

1. Bunking

The first thing that comes to your mind when you think of bunking a class is your canteen. There used to be lectures, which you thought of nothing less than torture. Canteen used to be the only thing on your mind because of two reasons- you get something to munch on while sitting there and planning about your next lecture and you know your lecturer will not come there while the class is on.

2. Credit

Running out of money is no big deal. But udhaar is the thing that only a college canteen would provide you. Though it is never mentioned on the college prospectus, it is one of the most common thing in your college life.

3. Low budget party

Have a low budget for your birthday or placement party? Hail college canteen. Though your friends wouldn’t really like it, but they understand why did you choose canteen to throw them a party. Even the best dish there is worth praising. Sometime in future, you are going to smile about the day you threw the best party ever- in your college canteen.

4. Waiting for your crush

I remember a classmate who had a crush on every other cute girl in college. From girls in junior term to senior term, stuttering in front of them, timely canteen visits and ‘accidentally’ bumping into them- all thanks to your canteen. And I am reminiscing my college days right now.

1. I am sick

If you belonged to a college where the authorities were very liberal with attendance, you had all the freedom in the world to skip lectures and stay a home. Even if you did not do it regularly, there must have been a few times when you lied to your parents and then, to your professors about not being able to attend college because of being unwell.

2. Bunking college

People bunk college for a variety of reasons – watching a film in a theatre, going for a road trip with friends or just to simply hangout with friends. Bunking is a term commonly associated with college students all around the world. Of course, this is the kind of information which you have to keep away from your parents and college authorities.

3. Relationship status

People lie about their relationship status for various reasons. Sometimes, when somebody proposes you and you are not interested in them, you lie to them by saying that you are in a relationship even when you are not. Then, there are times people lying about being in a relationship in a bid to appear cool in front of their peers.

4. Age is just a number

Some people tend to be older than the rest of their classmates. For some reason, they find it awkward to admit that they are older than their peers. While their official documents reveal their correct age, they hide their real age. Some people also do this so that they come across as younger.

5. Spending money

When compared to school, students do Goa little overboard with their expenses when they are in college.  Their limited money is never enough to cover all their expenditure. When you spend too much money partying, they cannot tell their parents about it. Hence, they fake a reason to cover it up and ask their parents to give them some extra pocket money.

6. Late submissions

College life involves a lot of project and assignment submissions and there is never enough time to finish them. Once in a while, you end up getting up late to submit a project or an assignment and then, you have no option but to make excuses and lie to your professor. In order not to lose marks for late submission, you try your best to since them that you were not able to submit the assignment on time because of a genuine reason.

These are the lies we told while in college – While lying is not a good thing and should not be encouraged, when you are young, you tend to some crazy stuff and there are times when you have no option but to lie your way out of that situation. Just make sure that it does not become a habit and you do not hurt anybody in the process.

Vectors Fest

Marking the completion of 25 years of the institute, the silver jubilee was evident in the annual technical fest Vectors 2016. Adapting vintage as the event theme, the entire college premises were showered with bits from the era.

The event took place on 5th and 6th of October 2016 and had an overwhelming response from students. Inauguration itself was an eye catching event with contraptions triggered by cutting of the ribbon by the college principal Dr. D. G. Borse.

Post inauguration, the Principal had a taste of a joy element from the student’s childhood through the gaming event ‘battle tanks’ which relived the retro sensation game battle city in actual reality.

Other attractions included innovative events like ‘human foosball’, ‘footpool’, ‘robo soccer’, ‘neon cricket’.

Throughout the whole event, the college premises were aptly carrying the theme with running scale models of steam engine train, pendulum clock, still models of vintage cars and also a savaged scooter and bicycle which added to the beauty of the place.

The students performed a flash mob on the college grounds during the day course of 5th October adding an element of surprise and fun to the flash mob incorporated the robotics form of dance where the audience was left spellbound.

The 2 days tech based carnival provided an intriguing platform for the students to showcase their knowledge and interests. The event, through various workshops embedded within, not just added an element of fun to the students’ experience but also contributed to their knowledge chest.

Canteen was the best place to hang out all day long.

I remember almost the whole day was just spent day dreaming and making castles in the air of the life after college. This one is the most common of the promises that we make with our friends. But just after college, reality strikes and all we are busy with is slogging our ass off with our jobs and the only trip that you are able to make is to your hometown if ever you have the privilege to stay away from home independently. Yes! Ohkay! Not to dishearten anybody but yes most of us thought of the person we will marry of whom we loved eternally during the college days. There are some people who are unable to marry the first love of their life!

Bank Balance

I thought of a life where I will be earning bomb and life looked all awesome but the reality is we have no idea where the hell our monthly salary drains out! Every girl dreamt of the designer wardrobe full of brands like Zara and Armani and what not. But little did we know at that time that earning the money is one round of a task.

So with these realities it still keeps us strong to work hard for our goals and the ideal life we dream of till date.

It is no news that college and caffeine go hand-in-hand, literally and metaphorically. Whether it’s to stay up for late night studying during exams, or during your evening dates, or that little time you manage to sneak out of your time table for a cup of caffeine in your college canteen, it is a declared fixture in almost four out of five students in college life.

Having said that, I still remember the taste of the milk tea that used to be served in my college canteen. Until final year, I tried by all means, to get that perfect flavour of tea (using my electric kettle), which they used to serve in the canteen, and for which I would sneak some time out, in between my classes, but to no avail. One of the things that makes tea better than any other beverage is that its always refreshing, no matter the time you’re consuming it. Even a tea bag nabbed from cafeteria and dipped in a concoction of water and milk is better and fresher than a cup of coffee that’s there in the urn for hours. The fact that it has lesser amount of caffeine and other attributes like health benefits and taste, makes it more wanted among the young college population.

So special was this tea for me, that I couldn’t stop myself from entering the kitchen and taking a note of how did the cook prepare it. I did have a notepad with me, so as to jot down each and every detail he mentioned about the preparation and smiled eventually. He probably was under the impression that I am an absolute cipher at cooking. Not that I am a great cook or something, but I definitely know how to make a cup of refreshing tea (wink).

In case you’re a big fan of tea, this preparation is simply going to make you feel happy about your culinary skills and if you’re not, well, you’ll turn into one.

The ingredients remain the same. However, the amount is a little different from how I used to make it.

Milk- 1 cup

Water- ¾ cup

Tea leaf- ¼ tsp

Sugar to taste

Method: In a saucepan, mix the milk and water and let it boil until the smell of milk is no longer felt. Add tea leaf to the concoction and let it simmer for a couple of minutes, until it turns slightly brown. Add the sugar and simmer for another five minutes. Your tea is ready.  

What I want you to note here is that, though the ingredients remain the same, this is not “just another way of making tea”. You’ll get the taste only when you follow the preparation instructions carefully.

Though thinking about that tea served with hot samosa pav in college still makes me nostalgic, I am happy about the fact that, there is something to satiate me, while I am lost in the memories of my college life.

Painting, dancing, music, advertising, writing and what-not. But, what we don’t understand here, is that even cooking is an art.

Cooking is that form of art, that does not only satisfy the one who made it, but also the one who’s experiencing it. It does not always have to be a five star-ish recipe or something of the top cadre. Simple and satisfying is all what your customer or target audience is looking for.

While in college, we all have that friend, who claims to cook the most amazing food, you would have ever had. Try your culinary skills in front of that friend, and all you get to hear is No. You’re doing it wrong. You are supposed to mix it this way.

The key is to start with the basics. Basics in the sense, that you should have a knowledge of the major ingredient, what proportion of it to be used in the dish and serving it with another dish.

Remember, when your mother asked you to learn to cook things like dal, rice and chapati and you snapped as if that is not a thing of your interest? How can you not be interested in cooking something that you’re going to have probably everyday, and love it when you feel like going inter-continental, European or other Asian dishes?

To know you true culinary skills, all you need to do is check out if there are any left overs in the refrigerator and make some mouth-watering recipe out of it. Whether it’s your secret Maggi recipe or a new dish, taking a step towards modifying the flavour of your food, always excites the chef in you.

I visited this place with a couple of friends. If you are a die hard fan of Bong food, go for their thali- veg or non veg. While the vegetarian thali serves you dishes like Alu posto, begun bhaja, cholar dal, luchis and rice, in a non vegetarian thali, you get to savour their famous Kosha Chicken, Jhorer Mutton with rice and luchis.

Bhojohori Manna, Andheri

If you are a hard core fan of prawns, then this is the place for you. Go for their Malai Jhingri, with rice or Kosha Mangsho with parathas.

Don’t forget to have their kimchi salad, Thai Pot rice/noodles and Kung Pao chicken. For desserts go for their Death by Chocolate.

China Gate, Bandra and Andheri West

This Chinese food-chain offers buffet that is quite reasonable. There are around four-five non vegetarian dishes in the main course. Food is fresh and the service is quite efficient. The dessert offers all sorts of sweet dish, i.e.- from the popular Darshan to Chocolate mousse, caramel custard and pastries. All in all, this place s something you cannot miss when you’re in suburbs.

Gee-Lee Chinese, Mahim

Gee-lee offers a wide range of Thai and Chinese dishes, from the menu. Don’t miss their Lee-Lee’s special soup and Peking Schezhwan rice/noodles, when you visit the place.

I am sure, you all might have undergone that feeling when you take the first bite of the food you had been craving for. Sheer Indulgence- takes you under its effect and breaks the pensive monotous routine.

Indulgence, I believe, has a different meaning for everybody. For somebody it might be a cup of cappucino, for another a scoop of ice cream of the favourite flavour. But for me, it is indulging in a cup of cutting chai with bhajia or vada pao on a rainy day. Somebody wise had sometime said that it’s the heart that matters, so in the end it is the satisfaction you receive, that matters.

Remember that feeling, when you’re home for a vacation and the aroma of cardamom, cloves, cinnamon and chilli hit your senses? Yes, that is true indulgeence. nothing better than home cooked food, or as we call it Ghar ka Khana.

With the advancing age, people are taking more interest in quality and quantity of food. Speaking for myself, I just love food. And though, I am an eggitarian, my choices are not limited- be it Indian cuisine or international.

It doesn’t really have to be expensive. Infact, for somebody like me indulgence is just 20 bucks. So go, pamper yourself this weekend, sitting in open air with your favourite people and treating yourself to a bite of indulgence.
