Fasting Till Death Ritual

Sokushinbutsu:  This ritual is no longer in practice but in the 11^th and 19^th century, the Biddist monks in Northern Japan practiced this process of austerity till death or mummification.

Buddhist mummies were referred to as the ‘Bodhisatvas’ i.e. deliberately not allowing the body to decompose. It is a belief that the Buddhist monk was able to mortify his flesh and hence even after death the body was still deliberately kept.

The practice of austerity till death was not suicide for the Buddhists at that time. Today none of the Buddhists follow this practice and it is banned in Japan.

Well that was Japan but India is known for carrying harsh rituals in the name of traditions.

Sallekhana/ Santhara/ Samadhi-marana/ Sanyasana-marana:

Whatever is the name the practice is very drastic and more shocking is the fact that it still prevails in our country.

In this ritual the person fasts till death. It is in Jainism.

As per reports every year on an average 240 Jains fast till death in our country.

What suicide???

Hell no…this according to them is the way of burning karma.

Who is allowed to undergo this process?

Physically fit person is not allowed. Here more importance is given to the mental stature than physical being. You may be suffering from a terminal disease but if you are mentally prepared to sacrifice all the worldly pleasures then you would be allowed to perform this process.

Prayopavesa:

This is again a similar practice of fasting till death in Hinduism.

November 2001:

Satguru Sivaya Subramaniyaswami had subjected himself to ‘Prayopavesa’. He died on the 32^nd day of his fast.

Please note I am not speaking against any religion or do not intend to hurt any sentiments. I am just raising some genuine concerns.

In a country where ‘Eutheneia’ is debated these practices go on in the name of religion…are we deliberately being blind?

Is there any science behind such practice?

There was a time when even ‘Sati practice’ was carried out in the form of a ritual. Today that practice doesn’t exist anymore.

So we are going to talk about the stuff which most people would be talking with you if you are a 20 years something.

What are the major pieces of advice that you get from people? What life lessons they pass on to you? What books they ask you to read? Where do they ask you to travel?

There are many, right?

Well I won’t be surprised if you said yes to this. In fact a yes is what I would expect.

Now, if I may ask, apart from all the advisory and constant nagging, from the experts of the sorts, have you set any goals for self?

Here, from my personal experiences, I would like to share with you a few goals in life that must establish for self if you are in your 20s.

1. Owning your first solo apartment must be a goal before you touch 29. No matter how big or small the apartment is, it should be YOURS! Be it a small studio one.

2. If you are staying away from family, make a goal to own basic amenities like a fridge, a washing machine, a TV, a music system and an AC. This will not only make you independent and self reliable for the rest of your life, but it will also prepare you to face life in all aspects.

3. But a health insurance for self. Make it a goal before you leave your 20s. You will have to stop relying on your parents’ health insurance. You must have an actual health insurance that came from your grown-up job! Whenever you have problems with something, you should not call your parents, you call your insurance provider because it’s yours!

5. Make a goal to acquire financial independence in your 20s itself. No more having to use your mom’s credit card to buy your makeup and shoes. Malls, cafes, restaurants and BPOs are a fair option to start with, till you grow in your profession. But the plus is, you will have your own money to spend whenever you want to.

6. Make a goal to learn how to save. Create a cushion for self while in your 20s. So that, If at all you go a little outside your budget sometimes, simply because you seriously needed that neon mini, or you needed to take some days off of work because you’re stressed out of your mind, you know you’re gonna be fine. Why? Because savings!

7. Have a goal to be in a relationship that lasts longer than a year, in your 20s. In that one year, you will learn to make adjustments, you will learn to respect individual space and you will also grow into a better human, if you survive one year of a relationship with the same person. Many bonuses will come along, which I leave for you find out for self.

8. Establish a goal to go for a real vacation. Not a crappy road trip in your borrowed rut of a car with a couple of dumb brunettes and few cans of beer and diet coke. Be on an actual, “we planned this whole thing” vacation, with flights, a pretty damn nice hotel, a bikini and few sexy dresses that you bought specifically for the trip.

9. Learn to cook while you are in your 20s, which means, learning to feed yourself like an adult. Learn to made a meal that involves actual recipes and you can be proud to host a dinner all on your own.

10. Make and meet a goal for self to buy a new car by yourself. Sure, you’re gonna be financing it for the next 16 years of your life, but will have that new car smell. It will be a priced possession and it will be not your parents’ car! It will be yours!

11. To have a real bank account where all your pay checks land, must be your goal in the 20s. And the pay checks should be big enough to pay for your rent, your expenses and a few gifts for your parents.

12. While you are in your 20s, invest in a hip designer piece that you can keep for the rest of your life, and flaunt to your friends, that you have something from a timeless collection. For example, a designer black blazer for boys or a little black dress for girls will be stylish for the next 30 years and therefore, so will you.

13. Make a goal that you discard all the stuff which reminds you of bad memories, and do not carry it forward to your 30s. Let there be enough space to make more memories born of new stories in your 30s.

14. Make a health goal in your 20s to reach your ideal weight and learn to maintain it for the rest of your life. This will prepare you mentally to stay fit and this will also help you value your health for the late life.

15. While you are at the 20 rope, learn to make good financial negotiations in your early years as 20s. Because, you need to make a life where negotiations are a part of anything and everything. Be it salary, buying furniture, or even maintaining a relation.

16. It should be your goal to take your mum and dad out for a holiday before you enter your 30s and start a life of your own relationships, professional commitments, aspirations and get utterly busy.

17. In your 20s, make a goal to gift something really cool which can be preserved for life, to the people closest to you. Make some memories for them, which can remind them of you, when they look at or use that stuff. May be a book to sister, a diamond pendant to mom, or a Rolex to dad.

18. Make some good investments in your 20s, which can fetch you life saver money when in need. A short, medium, or long term Investments, small one or big one, doesn’t matter, but you must have some stash invested which promises to bring the chunk, when there is no work.

19. If at all you are suffering any debts, make a goal in your 20s to get rid of them before you finish 20s. You must be free of all money related liabilities before you start a real adult life with your spouse and kids.

20. And this one, trust me is the most important goal that you need to achieve in your 20s. Because this may sound easy to read but it is the hardest to enact. You’ve got to learn to spend less than you earn. A lot less. The money you make over and above your expenditures is what you’ll save and invest with. This, in turn, will allow you to be secure and free to make choices in the future. If you always spend everything you own, your options will disappear once you can no longer make money like you can today.

And that’s about it. I pretty much summed up the life goals of all the 20 somethings and that they must try to achieve at least some of them.

Climate change is a pressing concern right now. Our climate is on the verge of destruction and we can’t sit idle. There is a dire need to raise awareness among people to do whatever little they can to help save our nature. It is as real as it gets and there is a dire need of action right now!

Many influencers and celebrities have time and again endored the idea of curbing pollution and use the natural resources wisely. The names of the celebrity list that vouched for saving the climate include Elon Musk, Leonardo Di Caprio, Elon Musk, Brad Pitt, Akon, Richard Branson et al. Now, the richest person on Earth, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has joined the bandwagon too who has devised a distinguished method to raise awareness among the masses.

Bill Gates, who has recently given up his throne of being the richest man alive on Earth, is recently indulging in some good cause and we are in complete awe for him. The mother Earth is suffering and he is showing what we earthlings have to do in order to save her. There is a video featuring the tech billionaire surfaced recently on the internet which tells us how to jump in action. Gates chose to go a little old-school by using squishy toys to make his idea comprehendible. We are so excited to feel like kindergarteners again, it’s the bouts of nostalgia that we are having right now.

The agenda of the video is to show the viewers that finding out renewable sources for electricity is not the only way forward to deal with this grave issue of a declining climate. Of course using solar and wind energy bear a significant impact in reducing carbon emissions, there are other sectors too that vie for our attention.

Gates used a pie chart to show that the carbon emissions can be curtailed through electricity generation. He also stressed upon the impact of the sectors like agriculture, manufacturing and even transportation in this context. He understands that we can’t stop the industrial or infastructal growth because the nations have descended in cut-throat competition. Also, there are basic neccessities of the constaly growing population that need to be met also. In a bid to fend off the adverse effects of industralization on mother Earth, he asks every one to adopt more sustainable ways.

It’s ancient:
One of the oldest and widely spoken languages in the world, it’s almost as world as the world itself. The first known inscriptions and words are recorded in 1st and 2nd BC. According to Wikipedia, Tamil has been described as ‘the only language of contemporary India which is recognisably continuous with a classical past’. This is what makes the beautiful language a classical one.

It has a vast and rich literature:
The literature is one of the oldest and has existed for over 2000 years. The ancient Sangam literature was first recorded between 200 and 300 BC. Whether it’s the short stories, novels or plays, Tamil literature has inspired a host of other cultures and communities into making their own written and spoken words. In fact, Malayalam is said to be inspired by Tamil, while Telugu is deeply influenced by Sanskrit and a little bit of Tamil. What’s interesting is that
More than 55% of the epigraphical inscriptions that were found by the Archaeological Survey of India are in the Tamil language…isn’t that amazing? If you don’t believe us, ask any Tamilian about Thirukural, Sillapadikaram and Manimekalai and they will be beaming with pride!

It’s sacred:
It’s used as a scared language in Ayyavazhi and in Shaivism and Vaishnavism. Since it’s grammar has continuously spread from old, middle and new Tamil eras, it’s also used as part of rituals, functions and celebrations. Only other language to be used in rituals is Sanskrit.

It’s origin is independent:
Although it’s not known if Sanskrit is older or Tamil is, it’s safe to say that Tamil is an independent language. According to Ambika Soni, a classical language is chosen according to “High antiquity of its early texts/recorded history over a period of 1500–2000 years; a body of ancient literature/texts, which is considered a valuable heritage by generations of speakers; the literary tradition be original and not borrowed from another speech community; the classical language and literature being distinct from modern, there may also be a discontinuity between the classical language and its later forms or its offshoots.”

Every know that on 30 January 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Vinayak Godse but very few of us know the why ?

Nathruram was undoubtedly a misguided patriot and thought that Gandhi favored the political demands of India’s Muslims.

In a documentary called Death For Peace, Nathuram  Godse’s brother Gopal Godse who actively conspired the death of Gandhi along with Nathuram and Narayan Apte, said that three attempts were made in order to kill Gandhi, including the one that was finally successful.

He also said the following statement in the documentary.

“Gandhi ji had stood in favour of Pakistan and said that I shall go on hunger strike, I shall die and the Rs 55 crores should be given (to Pakistan), then only I shall leave my fast. At that moment, some youths like me decided you will not die of hunger strike, you will die of bullets now.”

Mahatma Gandhi’s death has several theories that explain why Nathuram killed Gandhi. One of them is mentioned in Ashis Nandy’s book, At the Edge of Psychology.

He said, “Perhaps it was given in the situation that Nathuram would try to regain the lost clarity of his sexual role by becoming a model of masculinity.”

And as per one of the media reports of  Journal of Kerala unit of RSS, Godse’s target was Nehru and not Gandhi ji.

He performed weddings for young lovers in secret. As soon as the Emperor came to know about his actions, he ordered that Valentine must be put to death.
