Indian Boxers – After sportspersons like Vijender Singh and Mary Kom has taken the country’s pride in the highest degree, some of the other young adepts started to follow their stride and kept inspiring.

You may be happy to hear that Indian pugilists returned to the country with a trailblazing glory and brought the country eight medals, including four golds, from the third youth international championships Balkan Open 2017 in Sophia, Bulgaria.

That aside, the Indian boxers won one silver and three bronze medals alongside Indian youth team being deemed as the best team in the championship. Neetu Begum (48kg) in Gold Run, outshined Emi-Mari Todorova of Bulgaria 5-0, Sashi (57kg) won the country’s second gold beating Giordana Sorrentino from Italy.

In the 54 kg summit clash, Sakshi gave Biancamaria Tessari of Italy a tough battle and the referee stopped the contest in the second round to give India their third goal. There after Neha Yadav (+81kg) outshined Adrienne Juhasz belonging from Hungary 3-2 to score India’s fourth gold medal. The only disappointment was Ankushita (64kg) losing out to Rebecca Nicolo of Italy but still brought the silver medal for India nevertheless.

Then there were Bronze medals which were won by Joy Kumari (51kg) and Sapna (75kg) and Anupama (+81kg).

India is now gearing up for AIBA Women’s Youth World Boxing Championship which is slated to be held in Guwahati from November 19-26.

It is a major win for India and we are now looking forward to The Women’s World Youth Boxing Championship as declared by the AIBA (The International Boxing Federation of India’. President Ching Kuo Wo will grace the event with is presence in the ceremony to be held in Guwahati in November. We are hence waiting for bated breath to see Indian Boxing team to perform and establish its credentials in the International forefront.

Sakshi Malik, a girl who belongs from Haryana made India proud after she won her bronze medal.

Sakshi proved herself and became India’s first Indian woman wrestler to win a medal at Rio Olympics. Not only did she put an end to India’s frustration and painful wait but she proved a girl from small state should never be mistaken. (Yes!)

Well, it wasn’t an easy win for Sakshi as she was dropped down with 0-5 by Aisuluu Tynybekova in women’s freestyle 58kg wrestling category. It was a tough one; as Sakshi’s opponent grabbed her leg and she repeated the move again that lead her to win points. But, Sakshi later on took on her side and did the same move by letting Aisuluu down on the mat which led her gain one point. Sakshi then managed to earn two more points in her favor and managed to equal points up to 5-5. Not stopping down here; in a pressurize moment she took on the second round and defeated her opponent by 8-5 in the bronze medal match.

No doubt, we are proud of this young lady.

1. Sakshi Malik is 23 years old belonging from a small village called Mokhra, Haryana. Sakshi’s father Sukhbir Malik is a bus conductor who always stood up for her even though she had to fight with boys in her village.
2. Sakshi started off as a wrestler at a very young age of 12.
3. Sakshi practices for almost 5-6 hours a day and from 1 year for Olympics preparation she was staying in a Rohtak’s hostel called “Sai Sports Authority of India”.
4. Not only in sports but she is also brilliant in her studies.
5. In year 2010, Sakshi won a Bronze at the 2010 junior world championship.
6. In year 2014, she won Gold at the Dave Schultz International wrestling tournament and in August 2014 she also won a silver medal in Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
7. In year 2015, she won bronze at Senior Asian wrestling Championship in Doha.
8. In year 2016, Sakshi was qualified for the 2016 summer Olympics by defeating China’s Zhang Lan in the semi-final of the 58kg category.

And this one in her list too:- In August 2016-Sakshi made the world proud with her bronze medal winning against Asian champion Aisuluu Tynybekova.

Regarded as one of the pioneers of winter sports in India, Shiva Keshavan is on the brink of quitting luge.

The five-time Olympian, said that the Sports Ministry has ignored his financial plight.

Who is Shiva Keshavan? I am sure how other sports are ignored in india, some of us might not be aware who Shiva is.

Well Back in 1998, a 16-year old Shiva Keshavan became India’s first ever winter Olympian at a time when the country didn’t even know about luge’s existence.

Since then he travelled across the world and went on to compete against the best with little or no infrastructure available back home.

Dolly Shivani Cherukuri is a barely three-year old prodigal daughter of India hailing from Andhra Pradesh, who has recently set a national record by becoming the youngest Indian ever to score over 200 points in the five and seven-meter distance markup and has now been officially inducted into the India Book of Records for commendable feat.

• She took up archery when she was barely a few months old!

• She is about to turn three years old! She has mastered archery at this tender age already rivalling the most prolific archers of our country who themselves have been unable to achieve this feat in their entire career span!

• Biswaroop Roy Chowdhury from the India Book of Records says that this will be a difficult record to break for a long time since many toddlers in India cannot even hold a toy bow and arrow set properly whereas Dolly uses professional gear and manages to hit the target almost all the time.

• For the record, she fired 72 arrows in 24 attempts over the 5-metre and 7-metre distances and successfully hit a cumulative score of 200+.

• Her deceased brother, Cherukuri Lenin, was also an archer of international repute and also served as an Indian archery coach. Her father, Cherukuri Satyanarayana runs the VIjaywada Volgra Archery Academy in Andhra Pradesh to promote talents like Dolly who need a platform to showcase their skill.

• She is a surrogate-mother born baby but her love for archery seems to stem from her family who have nurtured her to this immaculate level of perfection.

• Her demeanor and poised determination is awe-inspiring and behaves like a pro-archer is expected to act like. She uses internationally approved gear like a pro uniform, chest guards, finger taps and high quality arrows. She does all this on her own!

• Her father is an excellent coach for her who has trained prolific compound archers representing India at the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and the Summer Olympics like Vennam Jyothi Surekha

• They plan to increase her distance every two metres in a span of two months to help her aim further.

Sim Bhullar, an Indian-Canadian center has created history on February 22! Scores a rare triple-double to shoot himself right into the NBA’s attention!

The 7’5” tall, 360 pound (160 kgs.) giant has done something that makes him eligible for the NBA!

The Reno Bighorns player who plays in the NBA D-league affiliation played the best 43 minutes of his life! He scored a total of 26 points, 17 rebound shouts and 11 block shots against the recent game against rivals Los Angeles D-Fenders.

The barely 22-year old youngster has improved his match considerably in the D-League and now messes around more into the matches he plays. Thank to he messed around and got a triple-double, dropping 26 points, 17 rebounds and 11 blocks.

Thanks to Coach David Arseneault Jr., the 43 minutes he played shot him into the history books thanks to the score line he put up. NBA should now clearly get a shot to play in the NBA. His NBA debut is coming close, really close!

His achievement has been called the greatest achievement ever in the history of the NBA D-league.

Bhullar was born in Canada to immigrant Indians, Avtar and Varinder Bhullar from Punjab, India.

He became the first ever person of Indian descent to play in the NBA affiliate games after he went undrafted in the coveted NBA draft of 2014.

His first team in college was the Sacramento Kings in 2014 as part of the NBA Summer League. Later on, he was waived off by the Kings and was acquired by the Reno Bighorns as a key affiliate player.

Bhullar’s D-League debut consisted of a total of 4 points, 8 rebounds and 6 blocked shots. However, his team, the Reno’s had a dismal loss 141-140 against the Los Angeles D-Fenders.

He currently plays at his career best of eight rebounds and three blocks at least per game.

In this 2015 season, he is leading the NB-DL in the blocks per game (3.6).

This quote perfectly sums up boxing, at the same time connoting its unpredictability because even the biggest player can get knocked out by just one punch.

The history of this game as well as the modern day matches have seen numerous toe-to-toe brawls that have left the audience wanting more.

Muhammad Ali vs. George Foreman (October 1974)

Famously termed “The Rumble in the Jungle” by boxing promoter Don King, this bout came at the back of Ali’s defeat against Joe Frazier. The match went on till the eleventh round when Holyfield threw nine punches forcing the referee to stop the fight.

Lennox Lewis vs. Hasim Rehman (November 2001)

Lennox Lewis had fought Rehman once before wherein he was knocked out in the fifth round. This time, however, the outcome would vary with knockout being the only similar aspect as compared to the earlier bout. Lewis dominated the fight winning the first three rounds convincingly. Rehman was knocked out in the fourth round when he fell back on the mat after the referee’s count reached nine.

Earnie Shavers vs. Jimmy Ellis (June 1973)

This list cannot be complete without inclusion of Earnie Shavers. This American former professional boxer is renowned for being the hardest puncher in the history of boxing. It was in June 1973 at the MSG where he fought Jimmy Ellis. Before entering this bout, Shavers held one of the most stunning records of 45 wins and 2 defeats; 32 out of the 42 wins were consecutive. Jimmy Ellis got knocked out in the first round itself.

James Douglas vs. Mike Tyson (February 1990)

If you follow boxing closely, you must be aware that this match is considered the biggest upset in the heavyweight category’s history. Douglas was always seen as an underachiever and was pitted against one of the angriest boxers of the era.

Though Tyson dropped Douglas in the eighth round, the latter only came strong to knock out Tyson in the tenth round. With this victory, Douglas became the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.

Raheesh Khatri, a tiny little boy from South Mumbai is not a regular kid.

He regularly goes to school and has many academic achievements to his name but what sets him apart from other kids of his age is his ardent passion for daredevilry.

Yes, you heard it right! Raheesh is a baby-dynamite stick, he has lived up on his genes and has recently been conferred the title of The Youngest Drag racer in the world; he already hold the record for being the Youngest Moto-cross racer in India. Akin to his father, Mudassar Khatri’s passion, motorsports racing, Raheesh too followed his father’s footsteps at a young age to fulfil his passion of enthusiastic racing.

He practices weekly at the I-Land racing school in Wadala but never lets it affect his academics.

His hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed; he was crowned as ‘The World’s Youngest Drag Racer’ after a valley run conducted at Aamby Valley City near Lonavala. This record was earlier held by Amber Bell, an eight year old girl from London. What is most astonishing is that Raheesh has no prior training in drag racing; he was accustomed to moto-cross racing which is slightly different in technique and style compared to drag races. To explain better why this feat is so commendable let us understand what drag racing and moto-cross racing actually mean.

Drag racing happens on a straight stretch of tarmac whereas moto-cross racing takes place on a specially designed circuit. The weight of these bikes is way too heavy to be controlled by a small child, but Raheesh manoeuvres them with ease. Moto cross racing involves jumping several feet in the air and sliding over elevated sections of the track.

Drag racing is similar to muscle car racing; these bikes have tremendous horsepower in them and achieve breakneck speeds within seconds of throttling.

For a child to be able to manage such techniques with ease is highly commendable.

Bhakti Sharma, India’s most promising open-water swimmer has done it again!

This 25 year old woman has done what no Asian or Indian has ever achieved yet!

She has set a new world record by swimming across the freezing Antarctic Ocean for a distance of 1.4 miles (2.25 km.) in 52 minutes battling sub-one degree celsius (34 °F) temperatures.

Note that the freezing point of water is 32 degrees Fahrenheit (°F). She shattered the previous records of American swimmer Lynne Cox and British open-water swimmer Lewis Pugh. She has now become the youngest woman in the world and the first Asian to conquer this feat. Bhakti, who is accustomed to such laurels for her hard work, has been conferred the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award in 2010 for her previous contributions to this sport.

Sharma has been nominated earlier for 2014 World Open Water Swimming Woman of the Year. She started swimming at the age of 2 years.

For the past 10 years she has traversed the entire globe adding laurels to her kitty. Her first record at the age of 14 years was an open water swim spanning 16 km from the Uran port near Mumbai to Gateway of India in 2003.

She is now the sole Indian to conquer all five oceans of the world and other different water bodies (seas and channels). She thanked her sponsors profusely, Hindustan Zinc Limited, for supporting her through all thick and thin.

Akhilesh Joshi, CEO of the company says ‘they are very proud of Bhakti Sharma for this rare achievement. The entire country is proud of her, particularly girls who would be seeing her as an inspiration to join swimming. 19 years old Poonam Chaturvedi is all set to be a national sporting hero.

Suffering from a brain tumour she was diagnosed with in early 2014, her relentless attitude is helping her shine in her sport, basketball.

She was forced to undergo various treatments and missed many orientation and training sessions, but this didn’t deter her spirits. Despite all odds, she registered a spectacular performance in the National Women’s Basketball Championship held in Rajasthan. 

In the final match against Delhi, Poonam representing Chhattisgarh credited 28 points to her name in an 84-75 point match. Her valiant contribution led Chhattisgarh to victory and she was also awarded the ‘Player of the tournament’ title for scoring the highest points in the overall championships. She scored a total of 178 points in seven games.

This success doesn’t come easy to her; the constant pain in her head troubles her a lot and she was forced to defend in the last stages of the match. Although, she is constantly struggling with pain, her ‘never say die’ attitude propels her further into the record books.

She has another laurel to her name, she has been adjudged the tallest female basketball player in India at 6’11″. Thanks to her God-gifted height, dunking the ball is a piece of cake for her. Her staggering height is what made selectors notice her during trials at Kanpur, her birthplace. She is almost as tall as professional NBA players.

Poonam’s father ShriramChaturvedi is a constable with the Uttar Pradesh Police. Her family plans to get her treated at NIMHANS hospital in Bangalore. NIMHANS is famous for its specialized line of radiation machines which can help treat the tumour located in the central part of her head. Her coach Rajesh Patel assures she will be fine once the procedure is successfully completed.

The Basketball Federation of India and the Bhilai Steel Plant have undertaken a promise to bear the entire medical expenses of Poonam’s treatment.

Poonam is eligible for the NBA Draft in the year 2017. She will be a reckoning force for the other NBA players, if selected for the NBA.

Amir Iqbal Khan, the British professional boxer who won an Olympic Silver medal (lightweight category) at the young age of 17 is all set to give a facelift to his sport in his ancestral country, Pakistan.

He is known as the ‘King’ of the ring owing to fiery bouts and an impeccable record of 30 Wins and only 3 Losses.

Out of those 30 Wins, 19 were the outcome of knockouts. He is a former two-time world champion, winning WBA, WBA (Super) and IBF Light Welterweight titles defeating heavier opponents.

Khan was nominated in 2005 for the ‘Laureus World Sports Award’ for ‘Breakthrough of the Year’ and also nominated for the 2011 ‘BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award’.

Owing to the recent Taliban attack on a Peshawar Army School in Pakistan on 16 December 2014 in which Taliban militants attacked and killed 141 people, 132 of them were children, Amir Khan decided to take a philanthropic step and donated his lucky boxing shorts for charity and also offered funds to help rebuild the school. He was deeply moved by this incident and strived to support people fighting against terrorism, including veteran Cricket legend Imran Khan.

He has now decided to gift aspiring pugilists in the country with a boxing academy, which will train world class boxers. He is already in talks with Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to discuss methods of promoting sports in the province. They both commented on the high prospects Pakistan’s youngsters have in sports.

Amir said “Pakistan is a safe and peaceful country. We all should be good Muslims”.

The academy is slated to be built in Lahore, according to speculated reports.

2014 has just bid adieu to us. 

It was a memorable year for Indian Sports in many ways, good and bad. 

Many new feats were achieved. Some scandals and allegations did blemish India’s image, but the positives prevailed. India’s performance was somewhat satisfactory since it was neither dull nor fantastic. However, a few retirements by veterans did make us emotional, we still wish they continued. 

Let’s have a look at some sporting categories and how India performed in them this past year: 

CRICKET

On the cricket Pitch, the IPL spot fixing scandal made more news than the sport itself. N. Srinivasan was asked to step down from BCCI Presidential duties and Sunil Gavaskar was appointed Interim BCCI President by the Supreme Court of India to oversee the 7th Edition of the Indian Premier League. 

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the captain of the test squad, announced a sudden and unwelcome retirement from Tests amidst the dismal performance against the Aussies in the December test series. 

Sachin Tendulkar, the golden boy of Indian Cricket was awarded the Bharat Ratna in recognition of his insurmountable cricketing feats and laurels for the country. 

India lost to Sri Lanka in the World T20 finals. 

Ishant Sharma’s fiery pace spearheaded India to decimate England in the Lords test match, registering a long needed win since 1986. 

The IPL spot fixing scandal was the highlight; however, with names of Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra and Chennai Super Kings Team Principal Gurunath Meiyappan surfacing in Supreme Court committee reports. 

Rohit Sharma managed to hit 264 against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens registering this contribution as the highest individual score in ODIs. 

Many cricketers struggling with form have been overlooked for the probable 30 odd World Cup Squad for 2015 such as Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag. 

WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES

Three athletes represented India at the Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia. They competed as Independent Olympic Athletes owing to the Indian Olympic Association’s suspension by the IOC. India is yet to win a medal at the winter games. 

India’s ban was lifted by the IOC after fresh elections were held by the IOA. India’s is now again part of the Olympic sporting nations.  

COMMONWEALTH GAMES

India sent the largest contingent ever comprising of 215 athletes to the games held in Glasgow, Scotland. Vikas Gowda clinched India’s first ever gold in the Men’s Discus throw, a feat India managed to achieve for the first time in men’s athletics. Parupalli Kashyap became India’s first male shuttler to win a gold in the men’s singles event after 32 years. 

Joshnna Chinappa and Dipika Pallikal too scripted history by bringing home the gold for the first time in Squash. 

India finished with a commendable fifth-place finish with 15 Gold, 30 Silver and 19 Bronze medals with a total tally of 64 medals. 

ASIAN GAMES

Indian Hockey ruled supreme at the games held in Incheon, South Korea. The team managed to win the Gold after 16 years and as an added bonus were gifted a direct berth in the 2016 Summer Olympics tournament. 

Many Gold medals were earned in promising sports categories. India’s run at these Asian Games was considered the best overall in terms of performance and hard work. 

India achieved a solid 8th position overall in the medals tally with 11 Gold, 10 Silver and 36 Bronze in a total tally of 57 medals. 

TENNIS

Sania Mirza again proved her mettle by winning the 2014 US Open Mixed Doubles title pairing with Bruno Soares. This is now her third Mixed Doubles career grand slam title.  

Sania also played a key role in spearheading Indian Aces’ win in the inaugural edition of the IPTL 2014 championship held in India. She also grabbed two Asian Games medals (mixed doubles gold with Saketh Myneni and women’s doubles silver with Prarthana Thombare). 

Mahesh Bhupathi and Vijay Amritraj managed to rope in Roger Federer, Caroline Wozniacki, Ana Ivanovic and Novak Djokovic into the IPTL who enthralled audiences with stellar performances. 

Neither Somdev Devarman nor Yuki Bhambri managed to register wins in order to enter the ATP Chennai Open. 

India lost to Serbia in the Davis Cup Playoffs going down by 3-2. 

FOOTBALL

Saurav Ganguly’s franchise Atletico de Kolkata Beat Kerala Blasters to win the inaugural ISL Championship. Sandesh Jhinghan, the Centre Back of Kerela Blasters was awarded the ‘Emerging Player of the League’ award. 

The National team, however had a dismal year and plunked down to the 174th position in the overall international rankings, their worst ever performance ever. 

CHESS

India retained the World Youth Chess Olympiad title by defeating Iran and Russia. India won this title for the fourth time. 

Karthikeyan Murali, the former world under-16 champion won two games in a row at the Indian Youth Olympiad to scale the 2500 rating mark and successfully complete the ‘Grand Master’ requirement. 

Five-time world champion Vishwanathan Anand failed to re-crown himself the World Champion after losing to Norwegian Magnus Carlsen in the World Championships finale held in Sochi, Russia. 

BILLIARDS\SNOOKER

Pankaj Advani, India’s ace cueist won the World 6-Red Snooker Championship Gold and setting a new world record of winning world titles in both billiards and snooker in all possible formats and also won the World Team Billiards Championship Gold. His singular achievement is the highest number of world titles held by any Indian sports-person 

In September 2014, he decided to relinquish his snooker tour card in order to concentrate on his billiards career and give more time to his family. 

GOLF

PGTI enjoyed one of its best seasons ever at the Asian Tour. Arjun Atwal grasped victory at the Dubai Open, ending a four year drought with a brilliant 66 in the final round. 

Rashid Khan won the Chiangmai Classic. Jyoti Randhawa hadn’t won an Asian Tour victory since 2009, but finished a respectable second at the Chiangmai Classic. 

SSP Chowrasia clinched the Panasonic Open. 

Anirban Lahiri emerged victorious at the Macau Open. 

BADMINTON

India registered itself as a dominant force this year at the international stage. Saina Nehwal and K. Srikanth clinched titles at China Super Series Premier. 

ATHLETICS

Dutee Chand was barred from all international competitions for having more male hormones than the permissible limit after failing all dope tests. 

BOXING

India was reinstated into the International Boxing Association (AIBA) fold after being taken over by a new body, Boxing India. 

Indian pugilists managed to bring home five medals from the Commonwealth Games; four silver and one bronze. 

SQUASH

Dipika Pallikal, Joshana Chinappa did wonders with the racquet this year, they won the women’s doubles gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, making it India’s first ever in the sport. Harinder Pal Sandhu and Saurav Ghosal together won the Men’s Team Gold Medal at the Incheon Asian Games. 

HOCKEY

After spearheading India to the Asian Games gold, Coach Terry Walsh tendered his resignation citing a bigger pay package. The Sports Authority of India and Sports Minister Sarbananda  Sonowal could not retain him after prolonged negotiations. 

Delhi Waveriders decimated Punjab Warriors in 3-1 penalty shoot-out to win Second Hockey India League 2014. 

SHOOTING

‘Pistol King’ Jitu Rai emerged the standout performer in shooting this year. Abhinav Bindra, Gagan Narang and Manavjit Singh Sandhu too, registered medals in their name. This was considered to be one of the most glorious years in Indian shooting, since shooters shined at the World Championships, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games by bringing laurels to the nation. 

ARCHERY

Compound archers were the heroes this year. At the Incheon Asian Games they registered their best ever show by grabbing one gold, one silver and two bronze. Re-curve archers managed to get nothing this year; a very dismal show. 

Abhishek Verma bagged one team gold and one individual silver at the Incheon Games. 

WEIGHTLIFTING

Our country’s lifters bagged 12 medals at the Commonwealth Games this year, a very respectable performance. Sukhen Dey, Satish Sivalingam and Khumukcham Sanjita Chanu bagged Gold in their respective weight categories. 

In Powerlifting, RajinderRahelu bagged a Silver by lifting 180.5 kg. 

To sum up, India is on to a winning start with newer and younger athletes coming into the fray. Seeing these medal wins, youngsters are getting inspired to take up sports as a professional career path and bring laurels to the nation. 

This is just the beginning, India has already made its mark in sports like Cricket, Wrestling, Boxing and Shooting. Other sports are also coming into the limelight slowly. India is on the path to being one of Asia’s most coveted sporting nations.

Diego Maradona (Football)

Diego Maradona is renowned for being one of the best football players in the game’s history. His ‘Hand of God’ incident during the 1986 FIFA World Cup is not the only story that generated controversy. At a later stage, in 1994, he was tested positive for ephedrine, a performance enhancer and a banned substance, at the same time. After the game against Nigeria, where he lasted full 90 minutes, Maradona was asked to provide a urine sample. Five days later, when the reports came, it was declared that the Argentine had failed the test.

Shane Warne (Cricket)

Cricket is another sport that has been marred with doping controversies. It was during the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup when Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne was sent home from the tournament for failing a dope test. The drugs responsible for his fate were hydrochlorothiazide and amiloride. Following the scandal, Warne was suspended from all forms of cricket over the next year. The player, in turn, claimed himself as being a victim of anti-doping hysteria, suggesting that his mother had given him the pills.

Marion Jones (Sprinting)

Marion Jones of the United States is a track and field athlete, who won five medals at the Sydney Summer Olympics, including three gold medals. In late 2004, the International Olympic Committee carried out research concerning Jones on whether she used steroids. Considered the world’s greatest female athlete at the time, she strongly denied all allegations, but eventually admitted to using steroids for two years starting 1999. As a result, she was stripped of all the hard-earned titles.

Alex Rodriguez (Baseball)

One of the most popular Major League Baseball players, Alex Rodriguez, was involved in a doping scandal in 2014. Apparently, the New York Yankees star admitted to the same, as a result of which he was banned from the 2014 MLB season. Getting an insight into the same led the anti-doping boss calling Rodriguez’s substance use the most potent example ever.

Lance Armstrong (Cycling)

Lance Armstrong has been a role model to many youngsters around the world. Well, not anymore. The legendary cyclist admitting to using performance enhancing drugs is seen as one of the darkest moments in sports history.

Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi (Tennis)
Tennis world’s two biggest rivals ever – Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi would always thrive to win and achieve success for themselves and country (both Americans) but from the outset, they weren’t all ‘mates’ as one would think. Although Agassi went onto win eight Grand Slam singles titles in his career, he could never catch Sampras and his 14 trophies, making the former a bit jealous of Pete. That did not end there as Agassi also criticised Sampras in an autobiography a few years ago, and it was quite obvious about their ‘feud’ as the duo exchanged unwanted pleasantries at a charity event back in 2010.

MS Dhoni and Virender Sehwag (Cricket)
The feud between these two celebrated Indian cricketers dates back to 2007 when BCCI appointed Dhoni and not Sehwag to lead the side at the T20 World Cup. After winning the title, the selectors gave MS Dhoni, the full responsibility of leading the ODI and T20 sides (Anil Kumble was the Test skipper then). Also, former India captain Sourav Ganguly told a Bengali news channel that MS Dhoni was behind the axing of Virender Sehwag.

Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia (Golf)
Barring the controversies, Golf number one Tiger Woods is still the best in the sport and has ruled the roost for quite some time. But many names came and went to rival Woods at the top, and one of them was Spaniard Sergio Garcia. He was supposed to be the biggest challenger to Tiger Woods in the early-2000s but unfortunately, the rivalry never took fruit.

With Woods clinching 14 major titles and Garcia still looking for his first, the duo have gone on separate paths but that hasn’t stopped them from taking potshots at each other. The hate between Woods and Garcia is very existent, with a long history and numerous examples of why they try and bring the other down anytime they get the chance to.

Wayne Rooney and David Moyes (Football)
When Sir Alex Ferguson stated that Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney pleaded to ‘leave the club’ back in 2012; that brought a strain the relation between the duo. Sir Alex retired and in walked David Moyes. The former Everton boss and Rooney had ‘fractious’ past and even though the former praised the England striker, some reports suggested that it was ‘Roo’ who brought the downfall of Moyes at the club.

Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard (Basketball)
L.A. Lakers star Kobe Bryant does not like former mates and that is included to Houston Rockets center Dwight Howard. During their play days at Lakers, Kobe and Dwight constantly have an argument with each other, as Bryant refused to let Howard come in and not adapt to the Lakers way. And the feud took to a new level when, Howard left Lakers for Rockets and the rivalry was unsavoury when the duo took the court.

Indian sport recorded a ‘Super Sunday’ and amongst them was country’s foremost shuttler Saina Nehwal who won the coveted China Open title.

The world No.5 defeated Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi 21-12, 22-20 in 42 minutes in the Final to bag her third women’s singles crown of the year.

Prior to this, the Hyderabad-born has also won the India Grand Prix Gold in January and the Australian Open Super Series in June.

Commenting on the win at China, Saina was very happy with the performance. “I was surprised to see the scores by which Akane beat Sun Yu and Bae Yeon Jun. I was not expecting to beat three Chinese in a row. I will remember this title for the rest of my life. Each year I used to wonder if I would ever win the China Open because it is such a difficult event. The crowd was lovely.

It was a special feeling to see a full house crowd cheering for both of us,” the six seeded added after the win.

Not only this, Kidambi Srikanth was also amongst the news as the former won against two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan (21-19, 21-17) to win the Men’s China Open Super Series tournament on Sunday.

Saina Nehwal might not have been a ‘record beater’ (followers) on the social media but after the China Open victory, the former may find a new fan base amongst the Indian sports lovers. But when the going gets tough, the tough gets going and that’s what Indian team did as they clinched an Asiad gold by beating arch-rivals Pakistan 4-2 in the penalty shoot-out of the final. More so, the Men In Blue also won a berth at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Indian cricket team wins ODI series in England
MS Dhoni’s side came into the 50-over format with a dismal Test performance at the back of their heads but some fresh faces and disciplined team management ensured the world champions go back victorious.

Squash wins India’s first medal at CWG
Indian squash duo of Joshana Chinappa and Dipika Pallikal became the first ever pair to win a CWG gold medal as they outplayed Jenny Duncalf and Laura Massaro of England in the final. The fifth-seeded pair defeated their English opponents with a 11-6 11-8 win in the best-of-three game final and make a mark in Indian sport.

ISL 2014 kicks-off
Indian football has never seen the light of the day but here it was fighting the odds thanks to some financial support from Reliance-IMG and AIFF as Indian Super League made its way onto ‘desi’ shores. Moreover, some of the world’s top stars like Alessandro Del Piero, Freddie Ljunberg and Robert Pires have pledged their support to improve the grassroot level of Indian football.

MC Mary Kom’s Gold medal win
First it was her movie that was earning the plaudits and then herself – Boxer M C Mary Kom became the first Indian woman boxer to clinch a gold medal at the Asian Games. The five-time world champion and Olympic bronze-medallist, had won a bronze at the 2010 Asiad but with grit and determination, ‘Magnificent Mary’ fought her way back into the history books.

Sarita Devi lands AIBA suspension
Indian boxer Sarita Devi was dominating her 60kg semifinals bout against Korean boxer Ji-Na Park at the 2014 Asian Games but unfortunately was declared on the losing side. In reply, the Manipuri refused to accept the bronze medal and walked away from the podium but later offered an apology to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). But taking nothing in their stride, the The International Boxing Association (AIBA) Executive Committee Bureau suspended Devi as well as her management at the Games.

Indian Team’s Test shame
After winning a historic Test at Lord’s, MS Dhoni’s side crumbled under pressure as they wavered and faltered on English shores, losing the Test series 3-1 in the process. Moreover, the likes of Virat Kohli who had dominated the Indian cricket scene, did not trouble the scorers and was in the news for the wrong reasons.

Terry Walsh’s walkout
Despite India’s success at the Asiad 2014, Aussie coach Terry Walsh stirred up a controversy when the former issued a resignation over a ‘pay dispute’ against the SAI (Sports Authority Of India). Walsh’s resignation revolved around an array of issues that included the rift of egos between Hockey India and SAI, as well as “flexibility and Indian bureaucracy don’t go hand in hand.” But some ‘efforts’ from the SAI and the Sports Ministry, Walsh took back the resignation.

Finally, justice has been served!

Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius was sentenced on Tuesday to five years imprisonment for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp by a South African judge.

The case which has lasted more than a year, saw Oscar shoot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day last year, through a toilet door at the former’s home.

The Paralympian testified that the shooting was by accident as he mistook Reeva for an intruder. But the South African judge withheld Oscar’s testify and cited ‘gross negligence’ while shooting Reeva.

South African judge Thokozile Masipa also ruled the Olympian to three years in prison for criminally firing a gun in a restaurant in a separate incident weeks before Steenkamp’s 2013 shooting death though the judge ordered that sentence to be completely suspended. Judge Masipa has convicted Oscar of culpable homicide, or negligent killing, but acquitted him of murder.

Speaking to the media after the verdict was announced, Pistorius’s uncle, Arnold was quoted: “The court has now handed down judgement and sentence, and we accept the judgement,” said Arnold Pistorius in a statement outside court. “Oscar will embrace this opportunity to pay back to society. This has been an incredibly hard and painful process for everyone involved, the Ms Steenkamp family, our family and Oscar.” He further adds, “We are all emotionally drained. The case that was set down for three weeks originally has been dragged out for seven months.”

As learnt from some legal experts, Pistorius’ sentence provides that his prison term will be of maximum of five years and moreover, the runner could be qualified for house arrest after serving eight months in jail.

But there’s still lot left in the case as both prosecution and defence have the right to appeal. But the prosecution service has said to the media that it had not yet decided and the defence has not yet commented as well.
