The university plans to start with two schools – School of Historical Sciences and the School of Environment and Ecology – by August-September. “The recruitment is for 20 faculty members posts – 10 in each school,” she said. Sabharwal said the recruitment process will be complete by March-end or early April. The university will then advertise for student enrolments. “Initially, only 15 to 20 students will be enrolled in each school,” she said. The university is set to come up on 446 acres in Rajgir, 10 km from the site of the ancient university in Nalanda, about 100 km southeast of Patna.

The university will be fully residential, like the ancient Nalanda university. It will offer courses in science, philosophy and spiritualism and social sciences.

And that is one of the toughest phases of education, seemingly so, for all aspiring students.

But, are the marks alone enough for promising education and a sound career?

Are parents also looking at the placement statistics of the institution where the child is opting for higher education?

Is there anything else that the admission seeking students and their parents need to know, beyond their scores and their preferred courses & subjects?

Well, since ancient times, the great Indian thinkers have always looked at education as the means for enlightenment through intellectual and moral development. Interestingly, even the greatest western thinkers of higher education like John Henry Newman (1850’s), Franklin Bobbit (1940’s), and Martha Nussbaum (contemporary) have consistently emphasized that university education is primarily aimed at developing individual’s intellect and raise the intellectual tone of society

Peripheral factors like scoring and immediate placements, etc., cannot continue to be its prime motivators for long. The admission seekers and their parents have to look at higher education as training for life and for the last job rather than the first job.

We are hereby proposing 11 cumulative questions that can help the parents and students need to know the thing before seeking College Admission to get clarifications about the core factors related the program of study and the institute they are opting for.

What are the goals and distinguishing characteristics of the curriculum? How does the curriculum address the need of broad based multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary education? How are industry internship and service learning (e.g., social internship, etc.) incorporated in the curriculum? What kind of flexibility and choices are offered to the students in deciding the specific courses (subjects)?

How does the curriculum aim to engage the student with larger and deeper questions related to life, society, profession, business ecosystem, and sustainable development?

What is the process of curriculum revision? When was the curriculum revised last time? What is the process of revising the syllabus of specific courses listed in the curriculum? How many specific courses listed in the curriculum have been revised in the last three years? How many new courses have been added to the curriculum in the last three years? How does the education help for next 10 years.

What kind of text and reference books are used in courses? Are students necessarily engaged with world class books by internationally reputed authors or some low quality local books dominate student racks?

How many faculty members are there in the core discipline of the program? What is the student-faculty ratio in the core discipline? What is the typical class size? What is the average weekly teaching load of faculty? Do they have sufficient time to interact with individual students?

What are the qualification, teaching experience, non-teaching professional experience, and interdisciplinary exposure of the faculty members of core discipline? Where did they study and work before? What kind of participation do they have in professional and alumni networks? What kind of professional, research, writing, consultancy, or social interests do they pursue?

What faculty and student exchange programs are effectively operational in the institution? What is duration and nature of these programs? What fraction of faculty and students have benefitted from such programs in last three years?

In the last three years, how many students from the institution have won some international or national awards related to the core discipline?

In the last three years, how many students have gone for further studies at world’s top 200 universities/institutes with respect to the core discipline they are opting?

What kinds of opportunities are available to students for extra-curricular engagement? Do these engagements expand their aesthetic sensitiveness, creativity, self expression, social responsibility, and leadership abilities? How are extra-curricular activities integrated with their core discipline?

What kind of ecosystem, encouragement, and support are provided to students for creation their own startups? How many students and alumni have created their own startups in the last 3 years?

In the last decade, scoring and placement seem to have become the most popular criteria and sometimes even the sole factor for assessing the quality of education. When it comes to reporting educational news, a large section of popular media finds placement related news to be the most worthy positive aspect of campuses.

A large number of institutes have started paying over-attention to the placement activity. In our view, the present highly skewed trend is even more harmful than those days when the campus placement was of no or very little concern to the educational institutes, till 1980’s. With the growing economy and opening avenues, there is no dearth of jobs in some sectors.

Employers’ entry level manpower needs are so large that do not even bother to look at the quality of education and mark-sheets of the prospective young brigade. And this is perfectly fine with respect to the nature of the work assigned to most freshers at many companies. It is not intellectually very demanding or challenging and hence it does not require deep technical knowledge and high scoring.

Often an overall pleasing personality with potential to remain disciplined and learn on the job are sufficient criteria for selection. For example, for the last several years, each of the major IT service company is recruiting tens of thousands of freshers with or without distinctions. Obviously their needs cannot be fulfilled by few colleges.

Hence, they have to recruit in large numbers at hundreds of colleges all over the country. Much better quality jobs are available in smaller companies.

The admission seeking students and their parents should not consider campus placement and scoring as the only and a very reliable/sustainable measures of the quality of education. They need to look at the core factors to reliably assess the quality of education for a long run, which help to sustain a lifetime.

We are sure that asking some of the above listed questions will help the admission seeking students and their parents to focus on the core factors at the time of such a crucial decision making.

Demanding and inquisitive students and parents will also create the required stimulus for the education community to reflect and respond with required improvements in our system.

All the very best to each one of you, seeking higher education and good jobs there of!

You are sad because now you have to bid adieu to your school friends, you are also happy and excited to start a new journey in your life- The college life!

I agree it’s a new journey for you, but always remember it is also the time you will meet new people who will either teach you important lessons or those who will completely shake your belief in human race.

So today I am going to share the types of people you need to stay away from in your college life if you want those 4 years to be stress free!

‘Chalaak Chatur’ types!

If you have seen 3 Idiots, you definitely know why you need to avoid characters like ‘Chatur’. They are the one who are jealous of you and would do all it takes to distract you or try to be ahead of you by hook or by crook. Stay away from them and make your life easier.

‘The Butter’ types!

They may be the teacher’s favourite student, but there is a reason you need to avoid them. They are the chamchas every class has, and you don’t want all your secrets to be leaked out to your college professor right? So better just avoid them.

The attention seekers!

Ok lets just admit these are the terrible lot you will meet a lot in your college. They are the one craving your attention all the time and will do any damn thing just to grab attention. The best way to deal with them is to compliment them “Yeh le bhai, aadha kilo bhav, khush?” and just RUN!

The wannabe gang leaders!

They may be a localite and they seem to know MLA or have jugaad in XYZ place, they may seem to be strong and influential people to hang out with. But remember although they might bail you out from situations, they might be the reason you are stuck in that situation. So the best thing is? Yes avoid them!

The energy suckers!

You need to save energy to attend those long boring lectures right? So you also need to stay away from people who just take away all your energies when they are around. They might try to irritate you so much that you will just want to run away from your college. But they say better be safe than sorry, so avoid them beforehand only and save yourself from the horror.

The ‘Bunkers’

Remember your parents have paid high fees so that you can have a secure future. You are there for a reason and that is solely studies! You surely need to avoid someone who has this trait.

Negative thinkers!

Vibes matter, trust me! You need to have positive people around you. Negative people will always cringe about everything, they will take away even your positivity. So beware who you stay around with.

Well these were some of the types you need to avoid in your college life.

Don’t forget to share in case you think I missed any in the comments below.

All the best for your college life. Have fun, make friends but ensure you don’t forget to study well 😉

However, there are some schools in the world that will shock you and make you rethink about the education!

Here are these:

1) The Boat Schools of Bangladesh

It might sound fun to study in a boat, but these boat schools are made out of necessity due to excessive floods in the country. Started by a non-profit organization called, Shidulai Swanirvar Sangstha, these schools boast of solar power, internet connectivity and libraries! As many as 100 boat schools are floating in Bangladesh empowering the country’s children and helping them make a great future!

2) The Witch School of Salem

Want to study the Witchcraft of Sorcery, Paganism, Wicca, and Divinatory Arts? Look no further! Enrol yourself amongst 40,000 other students in this school based in Salem giving special physical classes to teach you witchcraft. It is based on the same site which was a witness to 200 witch trials from the year 1692 to 1693!

3) Dongzhong Cave School in China

Your village doesn’t have enough resources to make a school? Well, find a cave nearby and start giving education! That’s what the villagers of a poor place in China did so that their children can get educated, even if in a dark and dingy cave. However, the government shut its gates in 2001!

4) River Plate School, Argentina

The students of this school have to manage their studies in a world famous soccer stadium in Buenos Aires. It is a world class stadium and home to famous soccer team Club Atletico while also holding the crown to teach as many as 2000 pupils! Imagine something like this in our own backyard in Wankhede Stadium? Or at Eden Garden?

5) School Of The Future, Philadelphia

Trust Microsoft to do everything differently and on a grand scale. This school is designed by Microsoft for the poor section of society selected through a lottery process and at a cost of $63 million since 2006 is home to so many students carving out a decent future for them. Best part: every kid is given a laptop and education is totally paperless!

6) Burgess Hill School, England

While schools are all about education, some give a different meaning to it by introducing certain aspects to it in the name of social experiment. This school in the 1960’s did exactly that by mirroring the rebellious attitude of the youth of that generation. Hence, taking lessons was voluntary, smoking was allowed, listening to music and wearing sunglasses wasn’t taboo and you could have even taken your pet with you in the class! Sounds fun? Well, the society didn’t consider it fun and hence it closed down! Good experiment though!

7) Gulu Elementary School, China

To reach this school is like making a herculean effort on a daily basis! The kids have to pass through the Luoma Way with sharp turns, narrow rocky passages and risky bridges to reach this school based in Sichuan Province in China. It started in 1980’s to empower a village and as improvement in its basic facilities, boasts of a proper toilet and a basketball court!

8) Harvey Milk High School, New York

This is a school dedicated to the needs of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders who otherwise feel humiliated and cornered in other institutions. Despite being attacked by society, the school survives till date and makes sure it’s students are treated like human beings and are no discriminated for their sexuality.

9) The Train Platform Schools Of India

Inderjit Khurana use to watch children begging while on her way to work on trains. This gave her an idea to start teaching these students on railway platforms between stations. What started as just one school now boasts of teaching 4000 needy children and even taking care of their food and medical needs of their family!

10) Forest Kindergartens, Across Europe

Studying amidst nature is dream come true for many. Enabling students aged 3-6 years are taught in outdoor classrooms helping them learn about nature in the most natural way. Just that kids need to be bit careful as the schools function in summers, winters and every other possible season!

Education has to be fun if it has to generate interest among students. These schools do provide an interesting way to study. Let’s hope more such alternative ways of studying come up to help many of our illiterate brethren come out of the darkness and see the light!

Chennai schools and colleges introducing unique courses and career options such as bag designing, footwear making in colleges or even legal and theatre studies in schools bears a testimony to this fact.

Bag designing

Could you have ever imagined that you can get a degree in performing arts and crafts or niche courses in humanities could also be a part of the education system in India wherefore, you can make great careers out of it? No, right?

But, now with unpredictable off-beat courses offered by Chennai educational institutes such as Kalakshetra and Dakshin Chitra and integrated courses on arts by IIT, Madras and colleges affiliated to the universities in Chennai, it is a possibility to pursue your career in a completely different direction, and yes, it is a welcome change keeping in mind the current trends and times.

Many students have been interested in enrolling themselves for visual communication in Madras Christian College, stressing the relevance of ad agencies, presentations and more interactive methods of communications in all fields.

The state universities in the past few years, have come up with fascinating and interesting courses in food processing, footwear making, bag designing, computer mathematics and even insurance subjects.

Food processing

It is of even greater importance that schools in Chennai too have decided to make their mark in this field, with many offering film-making courses, cinematography and photography. However, these courses, more than film- making have mostly been based on designing ad campaigns for films, video-making and giving lessons on the state of extended media and the innovative techniques of collating videos for storytelling purposes.

Footwear making

Chennai colleges are too emphasizing much on revamping their course infrastructure by introducing plant biotechnology, food service and nutrition management replacing those traditional, conventional subjects such as home science and botany.

Not only do these colleges introduce unique courses but they also cater to vocational, placement-based education especially for degrees in BBA, B.Sc. and BCA as apparently, most students choose to pursue them. However, the speciality now is that the B.Com. Cost Accounting course would now offer students with a professional degree and coaching from the institute itself, and would not require you to wait for a year after graduation to finally get placed.

In the field of Engineering however, the interests for instrumentation and mechatronics have not gained much warmth and popularity from the students. People mostly prefer courses in Computer Science or Electronic Engineering or even for that matter Civil and Mechanical Engineering. The students, it seems like to have it specific and clear before they even enrol themselves.

There are less of students now who are purely and genuinely interested in science subjects such as botany, zoology and physics. Maybe this is the reason why Chennai schools and colleges have come up with such multi-faceted courses and unique subjects as Legal Studies and Theatre Studies for its Class 11th students.

However, it seems that India has not warmed up to the idea of opting for such subjects as not even 20 per cent of the students have chosen these subjects, thus making these courses as good as non-viable and even forcing closure upon them. CBSE schools had faced much difficulty in shutting down these courses as after they had appointed faculty it was not possible to end their employment just as the interest for these courses had been rare.

The Chennai school authorities had mentioned that these off-beat courses are more popular in the northern part of the country and South India is still not open to the idea of non-conservative courses and are still living in the era of engineering and medicine.

While CBSE came up with 186 different courses ranging from Radiation Physics to Bakery Science for class 11th and 12th students, schools in the state have mostly witnessed children still opting for science and commerce streams.

Even schools that had introduced these unconventional courses have had to see close-down because of lack of the number of students applying for them.

This lack of patronage among students and their parents for these courses even led a course on Knowledge Traditions and Practices of India in The Vel’s Vidyashram Senior Secondary School to be shut down, that had once seen much fan following, especially as the CBSE Chairman was the one to launch the course in the city.

The city had also come up with interesting course combinations such as Economics, Maths, Science and Physics or Business Studies instead of Maths replacing the traditional choice of Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English or Computer Science instead of Maths or Biology for the State Board stream.

However, courses like Photography and Home Science have not done well and this has made it doubtful whether these off-beat courses are doing any good to the city’s schools and colleges, given the smattering of students.

This edge can only be achieved if you put in some extra effort to be apart from the rest in a different sort of way.

Diplomas and PG Certifications seem to be slowly becoming the current choice of students in India over traditional degree education. We take a look at this phenomenon below:

Why Are They So Popular Over Traditional Degrees?

In today’s world, niche specializations during your post-graduation years are more in vogue compared to the traditional degree which tends to eat up two or more years of your time. Niche PG specializations offer you these benefits over traditional degrees:

More or less the same course material is covered in a considerably shorter duration

The time that you save by studying your course material faster helps you get work more faster than people doing a full-time degree

Many employers today look for that extra spark in your resume’, which specialization courses give you

In some fields, such as media and marketing, specialization courses sometimes get more weightage than traditional degrees because they are done under the guidance of specialized and highly trained instructors which some degree colleges may lack.

For instance, can you imagine eating, sleeping or tasting beverages like tea could ever fetch you money, if not for the present day scenario?

Today the job market has come up with such diversity in career options that are the most unconventional and still relatively new like the field of tea management, especially for people living in Asia, from where the tea drinking habit originated and spread far across the world.

Tea leaves serve the taste buds as much as they serve India’s economy and its export revenue, where several people get jobs in the tea plantation industry.

Well, if you are a tea lover, you too can earn a good sum, especially with a degree or diploma course in tea management.

Tea tasting as a career

There are people working at all different levels in the tea industry whether it is related with the production, finance, sales and marketing, processing or tea tasting. There are courses in several institutes providing for courses in all these different aspects of the tea industry. However, these courses would not need you to be having a master’s or Ph.D., a simple graduate or a student who has passed class 12th can work as a tea sommelier after pursuing these courses and earn a handsome pay package! After the completion of this course, you surely would be able to tell one tea leaf from the other!

All being said and done, graduates of botany, agricultural science, food science, horticulture and related subjects would stand a better chance in understanding the procedures behind tea production and processing of tea leaves much better. If, however, you want to work in the marketing field of tea industry, a course in marketing and management would be advantageous. The industry offers for a job in tea brokering, auctioning, branding, marketing, processing, consulting, research, plantation management, et al.

The Department of Tea Husbandry and Technology in Assam Agricultural University, Indian Institute of Plantation Management, The Tea Research Association (TRA), Calcutta, Dipras Institute of Professional Studies, Darjeeling Tea Research and Management Association, NITM, Assam Darjeeling Tea Research Centre, Dipras Institute of Professional Studies, UPASI Tea Research Institute, The Tea Tasters Academy, Birla Institute of Futuristic Studies and Department of Tea Management, University of North Bengal are some colleges that offer both degree and diploma courses in tea management. Out of these, Indian Institute of Plantation Management, Bangalore is also known to offer two certificate courses in Tea Tasting and Marketing. For the professional certificate programme in tea tasting and marketing, the course duration is only for 45 days, while for a certificate course on Tea Estate Management is only for a month.

Tea tasting courses

Dipras Institute also offers a certificate course in Tea Management with course duration for a year; however, its Tea Tasting course would be complete within 2 months. The Post Graduate Diploma Course (PGDT) in NITM lasts for 9 months while at the Birla Institute, the Tea Tasting course is only for duration of 3 months. The University of North Bengal also offers a post-graduate diploma in Tea Management (PGDTM) for tenure of a year.

NITM has various modules for the PGDT course that includes Tea Culture and Agronomy, Tea Processing, Tea Management and General work in Tea Plantations covering surveys of land and nature and project works.

Most of these colleges offer courses in tea management for a short term, where processing, finance, marketing and tea tasting are all a part of the curriculum. Tea tasting, though needs you to be an avid tea lover, a quality which should be inherent or inculcated and not taught or that can be learnt over a period of time. However, during the training, one learns to spot the missing ingredient in a certain type of tea, and grade its quality by an understanding of the colour, brightness, the density and the texture or strength of the beverage. A tea prepared in Assam will be easily distinguishable for you from the one made in Kerala, after this course. A cup of tea that has more of water and less of tea leaves and a cup where all ingredients are in the right proportion to one another are something you will easily be able to make out by just sniffing the tea and inhaling its aroma, examining how even is the texture to calculate and figure out the innate, minute differences and the strength of the cup of tea.

After the course, you will be equipped with managing tea plantations, estates, agricultural requirements, finances, the storage and marketing needs as well as the labour management processes. But to pursue the course, you will first need to take a general aptitude test that will be a check on your skills, market knowledge about the leading beverage industries globally and your awareness on the prerequisites for tea production like the type of area, soil and equipment required.

The tea industry in India is a market that is flourishing and has a promising future and many organizations in the country employ individuals offering them attractive incentives like The Tea Board of India, Tea Plantations and Associations or broking houses where you can be employed as research personnel and tea consultants.

If you are interested in the finance aspect of the industry, working as the Financial Head, Consultant, Estate manager or in the marketing department can be a viable option and you can be paid generously as well with trainees earning INR 7000-10,000 and senior professionals around INR 25,000 a month. However, if you specialise in a certain aspect of the industry, you may even go on to earn a whopping 50,000 rupees a month and may even get the chance to work in a five-star hotel.

So what are you waiting for? Pick up the cup of tea and start examining its taste, colour and aroma!

Who knows it might just lead Tea Tasting As A Career.

While school studies in India is crammed with texts that need to be mugged up, and people believe that art education is not a prerequisite, there are evidences that show participating and studying fine arts have improved learning skills.

The art education comprises of learning music, dance, theatre and visual arts.

It has also been found that art education reduces student dropouts, develops better team players, increases student attendance in classes and promotes an innate love for learning, not to mention enhancing student creativity and preparing students as better citizens of the country.

As a study by the Columbia University claims, “the arts enhance the process of learning. The systems they nourish, which include our integrated sensory, attentional, cognitive, emotional and motor capacities, are, in fact, the driving forces behind all other learning.” (Jensen, 2001)

Have you ever noticed how paintings and museums used to attract our attention while as a kid? Art and its various forms exactly do that to people – it captures their focus and attention. It also connects and binds people socially and in a community.

While many schools are incorporating and introducing arts as a learning tool gradually and eventually, there are some colleges that we know of which are experts in offering guidance and mentorship in Fine Arts:

Shanti Niketan’s Kala Bhavan (Institute of Fine Arts), Kolkata

There are practice sessions, lectures, exhibitions and forum discussions that help maintain an environment that is art-friendly and students can come to know their specific areas of interest in the arts and also plan and improve their career goals and future prospects.

Started by Bengali laureate, Rabindranath Tagore, the educational institute is known to foster individual creativity and caters to five major streams of studies, viz. Painting, Sculpture, Graphic Arts, Design and Art History.

Eligibility: For Bachelors in Fine Arts (BFA) course or Diploma in Painting, 55% aggregate marks or its equivalent is the minimum required criteria for admission, while Masters in Fine Arts (MFA) candidates or students wanting to be enrolled for the Advanced Diploma course should have secured a first division in painting, sculpture, graphic art or design (ceramic, glass and textile) in their BFA in each specialized subject from each department of Kala Bhavan. However, diploma holders have to appear for the admission test for Advanced Diploma course.

The UG course includes four year BFA (Hons.), diploma courses in painting, sculpture, graphic art, design and History of Art.

There is also a two-year Certificate Course in Design and one-year Casual Course for Indian Nationals in Painting, Sculpture, Graphic Art, Design and History of Art.

The PG course incorporates two-year MFA and advanced Diploma Courses in painting, mural, sculpture, graphic art, design and History of Art.

The story that we are going to narrate is also of similar breed that belongs to colleges and campuses.

Yet, it has nothing to with the prevailing destruction and negativities of the world. All it inspires is positivism and a HOPE FOR LIFE.

This young NIT Durgapur student Harsh Vardhan Singh made a short film with the help of local slum children around his college for Microsoft Imagine Cup in Education category, and he felt as if he used the kids for his entry into the competition, and did not pay back. The guilt didn’t let him sleep. He had shot a movie, which showed the use of VOIP technology to educate underprivileged children, while the ones who acted in the film were themselves uneducated and alienated from the concept of education!

Harsh Vardhan says, “In 2009, I made a short film with my friends for Microsoft Imagine Cup casting the local slum children of a location called ‘Bihari More’, next to the Campus of National Institute of Technology, Durgapur. The film theme was the use of technology & innovation in educating remote & underprivileged children. But the children themselves being underprivileged provoked us to stand up for the children cause. This led us to conducting weekend teaching sessions for these kids at the local Hanuman Mandir. Gradually & unconsciously the project developed in an organised way, which is reflected in the performance & activities carried on by the children & volunteers in the project. Thus the project got its name, Bihari More Education Project a.k.a. BMEP.”

Soon after looking at their dedication, the management at NIT Durgapur allowed them to use their classrooms to teach the children and the alumni also donated to the cause. They started teaching the kids with standard textbooks, distributed stationeries and uniforms.

Apart from usual teaching sessions, The BMEP Volunteers team conducts quiz, drawing competitions, science fair trips, sanitation awareness campaign and many innovative fun learning methods. With a large influx of volunteers, BMEP also expanded to nearby locations of NIT Campus, touching the child labour issue too at college hangout eateries with their “Caring For Jhoops Kids” Campaign.

In 2012, two years after Harsh had passed out from the college, One of his juniors Jigme Lama along with his friends Aneesha Murty, Eshna Ekka and Nikhil Bara started talking to kids involved in child labour and convinced their owners to allow them to study after working hours. It took over six months of convincing before they were allowed to study under BMEP. “It was a great achievement for us”, Harsh recounts. During his final year, Harsh made another short film, “The Uncaptured Passion”, which was selected for the 63rd Cannes Film Festival, France, and had a world premiere on May 21, 2010, at the Palaise de festival, Cannes. His talent was noticed by filmmaker R Balki who called him to Mumbai to work with him. Harsh gave up his placements for his passion and went to Mumbai and started working.

However, his heart lay with the kids in BMEP.

At present, Harsh has his own company Paper Weight Entertainment India, which undertakes independent projects and the money he earns from it is used for BMEP. They had also done a fundraiser in 2012 for the same. At BMEP, they have expanded to a lot of activities to improve the life of underprivileged kids, including Annual Medical Checkups, Basic Awareness about hygiene, Teaching kids to talk and speak in English apart from soft skills, They are taken on trips to science fairs. Everything is volunteer driven at BMEP, who are selflessly working towards giving a better life to these children by educating them.

BMEP mentors around 76 slum children in the area and has been featured on UNICEF and many more publications. Yet, the BMEP Volunteers Team still believe they have a long way to go.

” We Target to make NIT Durgapur into a 100% Child Literacy and Welfare Zone “- Says the BMEP Team

So this is yet another CAMPUS STORY, that moved us, did it move you?

Inspired? Are You?

The feature aims to integrate vocational and conventional education to the students, in the current education system.

A credit framework is in operations, which will allow lateral and vertical mobility within the vocational educational system and between the current education systems.

The SAMVAY defines the rule for credit allotment and follows the National Skills Qualification Framework.

Under the National Skills Qualification Framework, skill providers will be registered under AICTE or other authorized bodies. When the students completes the skills modules they require for certification, they acquire it from the skill provide or trainer, and can submit the credits to the concerned institute.

The institute would then transfer them to a technical board or university. Once the certification is awarded by the board or university after assembling together the vocational skill and formal education credits, the student might use it for further purposes.

The Skill Assessment Matrix for Vocational Advancement of Youth was announced on National Education day, which is observed on November 11th every year. The scheme shall be implemented from next year, by all the colleges/institute belonging to central board, so that people who wish to resume their studies can go ahead with it, said HRD Minister Ms. Smriti Irani.

On the same day, President, Shri Pranab Mukherjee came forward to launch another portal that specifically targets the students going for higher studies, known as Know Your College.

The portal aims at increasing awareness about the opportunities that a particular programme of a particular university provides.

A scholarship named Pragati was also launched on the same occasion to encourage technical education of girls at undergraduate level.

We hope that these new schemes, portals, and scholarships encourages the required change that has to be brought necessarily in the education system.

The official portal of the programme recently posted the reports of the survey they conducted across the nation. The findings are based on the data collected from a sample of 99,929 households within 5005 PSUs (villages and urban wards), states the report. The estimated total number of children in the age group 6-13 years is 20.41 crores, out of which an approximate number of 60.47 lakhs drop out of school.

While Odisha is said to have the highest proportion of out of school children in India (6.10%), Maharashtra has seen a considerable amount of drop outs in the recent years. The RTE Act was launched about five years ago to ensure that every child in the age group of 6 to 14 attains free basic primary education, compulsorily.

While there has been a reduction in drop outs in many areas, a good percentage of increase has been observed in the drop-outs in the urban regions of the country. The report by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan also says that the drop out percentage of girls or female candidates is most than that of boys.

The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) is a programme launched by Government of India for achievement of Universalization of Elementary Education (UEE) in a time bound manner, as mandated by 86th amendment to the Constitution of India making free and compulsory education to the children of 6.14 years age group. The programme seeks to open new schools and provide all basic facilities and other necessities to schools with poor infrastructure or no financial support.

(Figures as stated by SSA official portal)

Smriti Irani.

“We will start a new educational policy soon. Educational policy takes from around seven months to three years, and politicians, bureaucrats and experts to draw it up. I say this not only as an HRD minister, but also as a mother of two CBSE school going kids”, added Irani who was present at a valedictory function of the 21st Annual Shahodaya conference of CBSE at Nedumbassery. The NEP is expected to help the educational institutes meet various challenges that arise out of deficiency in quality, innovation and research.

The implementation will take place after extensive deliberations, which will begin next year. The need of the hour is to engage students, teachers, and other officials in creating an educational policy that benefits the overall literacy rate of the country. Decision making rights for education had been restricted to politicians until recently. However, due to changing face of education in India in recent years, it has become imperative that people from all walks of life share their experiences and contribute in the betterment of the system.

Suggestions regarding the way the policies should function would be invited from people of all states in the country. The role of print and online media will be an important step in this regard, as the government will utilize them to involve the general public in the policy formulation procedure.

The past two decades have seen significant changes in the education system in India. Inclusion of different models at elementary level, technological means in classrooms, revision of higher education system and a number of other changes. We hope the NEP brings all prosperity in the education category in India.

The University that was earlier going to continue with the implemented FYUP, but finally had to roll back to the three-year discipline, was blamed by a bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice R S Endlaw, regarding the first round of admissions. The situation came into account when a student, though eligible to get admission in any college in DU under sports quota of FYUP, could not be admitted. The reason being, Maths as a mandatory subject in HSC, to take admission in three=year program.

The Court on the same ground ordered Delhi University’s Maharaja Agrasen College to admit the student under sports quota. The order given by single judge bench dismissed the order from the college which did not accept the plea for the student’s admission, as he did not have maths as a subject.

Due to change in policy, strong protest from the applicants, and as per the directions of the UGC, DU scrapped the FYUP program, introduced with effect from 2013-14, during the current academic year, and reverted to the previous three-year programme.

It was a sultry afternoon.

I was sulking at my workplace after having a lip smacking lunch with my colleagues, when surfing through the internet I came across an article that talked about the Ministry of Human Resource Development writing to the Directors of all 16 Indian Institutes of Technology over an issue that concerned consumption of non vegetarian food in messes of the institutions.

Though the students may not have asked for it, the Human Resources Development Ministry has asked the Indian Institutes of Technology to explore the possibility of having separate canteens for its vegetarian students based on the possibility that non-vegetarian food continues to create tamas (dark thoughts) in students.

Apparently, a letter was written to the HRD ministry by a group of concerned citizens, most of whom belonged to the RSS, which expressed their dismay at the influence non-vegetarian food is causing in the life of students belonging to the most prestigious institutions in the country.

The only thing that I could think of at that very moment was Are we really taking this seriously? The letter deceives the insignificant intolerance that is ridiculously creeping and intensifying its foundations all across the nation. The claims of non-vegetarian food being a symbol of western culture, is taken into consideration by a body who stands for the welfare of the nation.

Well, even if that was true, let’s see, all of our vegetarian folks would be highly tolerant and respectful, because they have always consumed Sattvic food.

The disturbing thing about the news is not that few “concerned” citizens thought about the future of the country, but that the HRD ministry approved of it, and is taking into account the necessary changes that needs to be made.

Though a decision is yet to be concluded, we hope that the Ministry ponders over how few caste-ist and communal choices are being made in explicit ways, and forced upon students who belong to the largest democracy in the world.

We also hope that they work over other relevant issues that’s affecting the overall growth of the country.

The committee that was formed to inspect the colleges was headed by the UGC secretary JS Sandhu and other members which includes OP Kalra of University College of Medical Sciences, Ramesh Dadhich of ICSSR, SP Goyal- Joint Secretary of HRD Ministry, and Sunita Siwach, a UGC official.

The thing to be noted here is that the committee included two officials (from HRD Ministry and the UGC) who did not fall into any of the categories mentioned in the rule book formed by UGC.

Back in 2009, the UGC set up specific norms to constitute an investigation committee to ascertain financial needs of a college/university/equivalent body that practices the same standard of teaching, examination and research or both. One of the rules stated that the committee for verification of any such mentioned financial matters should consist of two serving or retired VCs of any central or state university; three to five members from amongst professors having special knowledge of the courses being conducted in the university; one member from each of the councils with jurisdiction over the courses in the university; and one from the National Academic and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

While the HRD Ministry sources admit that the committee was formed on the ground that it is not a regular inspection committee, they could not justify how HRD and UGC officials could be a part of it. It is believed that though the ministry wanted to have some say in physical verification of the universities, once the committee was set, it would be hard for the HRD to intervene.

The UGC report mentioned that among the 41 universities only 7 should be stripped off from their deemed status, while the remaining can continue to keep their status for time being. However, the ministry had decided to scrutinize all the 41 universities as they were found to be unfit for ‘deemed’ status by the Tandon Committee in 2009.

Though the UGC was the only body to decide the setting up and members of the committee, no regulation stated that a member or more from the HRD Ministry could be a part of the investigation panel. We wonder why did they include the two members.

Phil and Ph.d courses in the University, is inconsistent.

The plea filed by advocate Jamshed Ansari, who has alleged that DU violated University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines to ‘arbitrarily’ precede the inclusion of students into its Master of Philosophy (M. Phil) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.d) courses.

Justice Manmohan issued the notice to DU and has asked it to send an appropriate reply by March 16th, 2015, which is also the next date of hearing in the case.

The petition quoted, “As per the UGC regulation, 2009, DU is bound to admit M. Phil/ Ph. D students through an entrance test followed by an interview. After admission these students are required to undertake course work for a minimum period of one semester.” Apart from that, the petition also talks about the disregarded regulations by the varsity, to admit students based on interviews only and not undertaking the minimum one semester coursework.

The advocate has also claimed that DU helped those candidates take admission in the courses, who were known to the staff.

Ansari says in his plea that he has applied for the Ph.D programme under DU’s Faculty of Law against the notification for the same issued on January 8th. He claimed that though he had appeared for the interview on February 18th, he did not qualify for the program due to the alleged arbitrary admission procedure.

Of late, DU has been involved in a number of controversies, latest being the order of de-recognition of its Law faculty from Delhi High Court.
