294 runs in 5 Tests at an average of 29.40 – Kevin Pietersen’s stat read at the end of the 5-0 whitewash at the hands of Australia in the Ashes series. The 33-year old was in the firing line for under-performing and failed to lit up with the bat. Since the Ashes have now returned to the Aussies, ‘KP’ has vowed to win back the Urn. On Twitter, Kevin Pietersen responded to the criticism, “Very disappointed to lose 5-0, and not to score more runs personally. Tough tour against a top class team. #Ashes. I want to thank all the England fans for their terrific support. And I’m determined to help regain the Ashes in 2015.”

Furthermore, the South African-born batsman has the backing of former English skipper Michael Vaughan. He was quoted on BBC, “At the moment there are too many people making decisions that are too similar – Cook, Flower, Gooch – the management are all very similar. That’s why I would go with the maverick Pietersen next to them. Someone completely at the other end of the spectrum. Pietersen would bring a different dimension and then you meet halfway. If you just go with the same thing all the time, the same voices and same approach, eventually you get found out.”

Even though Pietersen is eager to win over the English selectors and fans, his form will be determined during the Sri Lanka and India series. By that time, KP has a lot of soul searching to do.
