It should be truly imperative for you to take the matter of your CV as seriously as possible.

But fresher often get apprehensive while writing their CV. What blunders do you create while sending your resume?

There might be many, depending on different parameters, here we have listed 10 general things that you should not include in your CV because if you do you will surely derail your job search.

Things that you should not include in your CV

Senseless Objective

There is no need to add a long fledged idea behind your job application because if you applied, it is pretty obvious that you want the job. So, don’t add senseless objectives, just a brief summary will be worth enough.

Irrelevant Job Experience

You might be the best at making milkshakes at the cafe you worked during your high school or having many other job experiences, but if it has nothing to do with the job you are applying for, just leave it. Try to add only those experiences which you think is relevant for the position you are seeking for.

Physical Characteristics

If you are having 6 pack abs there is no need to add it to your CV. Your physical characteristics really don’t deserve a space on the sheet of your resume, if you do add it you will only become a medium of laughter among your employers.

Achievements That Are Not Achievements

Being nominated for the ‘Roposo Face Of The Week’ is not actually an achievement that will help you to get a job of manager. So just ignore those childish achievements that you had during your academics.

Listing Your Hobbies

Your hobby list should be precise and short and include only those hobbies that you really think will be viewed as strange light. Otherwise listing random hobbies like reading or listening is not necessary.

Bad Grammar Or Obscure Words

Bad grammar or obscure words can have an adverse impression on the employer, it shows your carelessness and will be tossed as laughs. Don’t try to impress them with big words, be verified about the vocabulary and grammar you are using.

Extra Personal Detail

You must provide your employer with general personal details but there is no need add too many personal details like your marital status or religious preferences. This might be the standards in past but presently it is illegal to ask extra personal details.

Unprofessional Contact Information

If you have an email address that you made in your childhood can be inappropriate for you as a professional. Don’t include it and make another its free and most accounts allow you to have more than one, you can easily get a new email address.

Too Much Text

You don’t need to write stories on your CV, write rigorously and as shorter as possible. Definitely, your employers will be having many CVs to read, they won’t like to spend hours on every single applicant, even they may get irritated with your long texts. So, try to describe yourself vastly but in short.

Colorful Text And Creative Fonts

You are not drafting your CV to show it to your art teacher, you are drafting something professional. Keep it as elegant as possible and avoid using colorful text and creative fonts.

These are the things that you should not include in your CV – There can be no denying that we live in a highly competitive era, life has become tough nowadays. increasing population and rising unemployment make it tough to grab a job. So be careful before drafting your CV because it is an important element that will help you to be unique from your competitors.

Well, if you are and if you are making these 7 mistakes in a resume, chances of your getting a job reduce substantially.

To be honest, what and how you write in your resume becomes a testimony to your personality and skills. Make sure you reflect what you want to and what can enhance your career, and not what can ruin it altogether.

Also, if you were not aware till now, get yourself updated on the fact that resumes, like many other marketing materials, have an expiration date. Resume sells your skills, and hence it is a marketing doc for you. But, as the times and the technology change, the procedures of job hunt and evaluations are changing too. Therefore it becomes important to re-evaluate your resume writing styles and avoid the mistakes that you might be making.

Here are the top 7 mistakes you are making while writing your Resume! Avoid them at all costs!

Do Not Make It Look Like An Auto Biography. Keep It Short And Crisp

Ok yes, you are too enthusiastic to write about your achievements, awards, hobbies and interests, agreed! But, the longer the resume, the greater are the chances of it getting rejected. On an average, a recruiter or employer would spend 6 to 10 seconds to take a glance through your resume. The highest would be 16 seconds, if at all it is found worth consideration. If you wish to give away all the info in those 10 or 16 seconds, try to keep it to pone pager or one and a half to the max. Remember, your resume should always highlight the skills, the job experience, and the life accomplishments that are most relevant to your job goals.

It’s the first formal form of communication with our prospective employer. Many people are not aware about the difference between resume and CV.

There are some points that differentiate the two application documents. Americans and Canadians hardly use CV.In our nation these two terms are used interchangeably.

In many nations, resumes are not used at all.

The major differences are in:

Length

Content/Layout

Purpose

What is a Resume?

A resume or résumé is a brief note about education, skills and experience. This report must provide the reader all details about the employee in a glance. The document should be of one or two page maximum as it is intended that reader will not dwell on the document for long and one has stand out from crowd with the help of the resume.

What is CV?

A Curriculum Vitæ or CV means course of life in Latin, is a detailed document that can be laid out for two or more than two pages. It covers career history, education, awards, honors and other details in depth in chronological order.

Differences:

As stated above, there are three major differences. Resume is brief summary of skills and experience over one or two pages. A CV is more detailed and is stretched beyond two pages.

Resume content will change according to the type of job role. For CV one has to simply change the content in the cover letter and not in the main body of CV.

A CV has proper chronological order about the person’s career and resume can be shuffled accordingly.

So in short CV is a long detailed document that covers entire career and is static whereas resume is short, customizable and skills and achievements mentioned are according to the particular job role.

A career in teaching though considered prestigious and revered all over, needs you to impress the recruiter in one go with your skills, talents and of course, an unbeatable resume and cover letter!

Unfortunately, applying for and getting selected for a teacher’s role is not as easy as it used to be earlier when your studious look and attire, your grades in exams and your pleasant demeanour were the only necessary credentials; just like corporate jobs, you have to wander from one college to another carrying your resume and have to apply to many colleges online simultaneously for a really long time until you finally are asked to come for the interview!

Your teaching resume will take you from good to better to the most reputed colleges, only if it showcases that you are adaptable, tactful and have good communication as well as presentation skills. This may sound easy but it would make you re-examine and relearn what you have already learnt while writing resumes.

So, let’s take a look about how your teaching resume should look like:

Coloured Pages or differently-shaped papers would not make your resume unique:

Using bright-coloured papers or bigger-sized pages would not help the administrator put your resume on top of the stack or get a valued recommendation. The best you can do is using a slightly off-white or lightly textured paper, however it is the content that will make your resume grab eyeballs.

A Mention of additional qualifications is quite the smart move:

The educational workshops, seminars and children educational activities that you have participated in should receive a worthy mention in your resume. This would do wonders for your job application as adding your additional educational qualifications would mean you are passionate, serious and committed to your field of interest. The tuition classes that you have taken and the student workshops you have attended should be mentioned here, howsoever small span of time they might have been for.

Your Teaching Capabilities and Specific Interests in Teaching Area Need To Be Chosen

If you have been an active member of volunteering organizations for teaching, it needs to be mentioned along with your professional goals and ambitions in your resume. However, some of them you can also specify during the interview. The number of students you can or have handled in the past and the particular subjects that you like to teach should be given in your resume and you should also repeat the point during your interview. Working with power point and other form of presentations should be a must-given forte. So, if you are not acquainted with them, you must start right away. You can also offer to carry a DVD of your presentations for further perusal by the principal.

Teaching Experience – Both Paid and Unpaid

Those Sunday afternoon classes or practical invigilation that you have conducted should also receive a mention in your resume, even if they were unpaid for, as this would show that you teach as it is your passion and interest, and not only because of the money involved. Teaching is a profession that involves much genuine interest, passion and dedication towards shaping lives and enabling students to have a bright future. So, if you specify your volunteering experiences or teaching and helping school students, document the time and year to give a detail picture of your teaching experience, apart from the one in a college classroom set-up.

Give Your Resume a Professional Touch

You must make your resume look professional and keep away from unusual, whacky fonts which are sure to divert the recruiter from the actual content of the resume. Proofread your resume before submitting it and check for any spelling/grammar errors. Your contact details should be right at the top as you want don’t want the recruiter who might just be the head of a department or the principal to waste time on looking for your name and contact number while calling you for the interview or asking you to give presentations. And yes! For those of you who have had several years of experience in the field of teaching, beware! You might have to present your ideas on a certain subject, thinking that you are presenting a lecture to the class filled with students during the interview, which you might not be so accustomed to, keeping in the mind the earlier techniques of job application and interview tactics, especially for a lecturer.

Why a cover letter and what must it include?

Your cover letter too must reflect your passion for teaching and the necessary certification you have for the position. A mention of why you have chosen this profession and what makes you love teaching, in your cover letter is a must. You also need to give a little insight into the work ethics and rules you follow, for instance, helping students in other extra-curricular activities and projects apart from the regular classes and introducing innovative and interactive methods of teaching would help the administration and the principal know about your commitment and creativity-oriented approach towards students.

Your achievements and experiences and the success you have acquired so far in this field and the documents that go to prove your mettle in the field, all need a worthy mention in your cover letter. You can relate anecdotes and other examples of where your efforts were higher in leaps than other teachers or how you led the students to have an outstanding performance.

In your cover letter, you can also give a brief input on your mentor or a teacher who is your favourite, elucidating the reasons too. This would also lead the principal to believe that you understand the importance of the role a teacher plays in a person’s life. A background research on the university you are applying to and what it is known for can be a plus point to your cover letter when you show your interest in involving yourself with such programmes in the college.

The methods using which you wish to mentor your students, if specified in the cover letter will get instant attention and you will suddenly be an edge above other candidates. If you can communicate to the principal the type of job profile you are looking for, the reason you should be hired and the interest you have in their college, you are very well in his/her mind for an interview and soon will be inside the college premises as the Professor.

Happy Teaching!

However, it is not so that since you are applying or have applied for an internship in your field, you will face any less competition. There are several like you who plan to enter their field as interns to gain a whole lot of exposure in different departments or aspects of their work so as they can choose the department they would most like to work in, in their future. There are also some who plan to take a gap in their work history just to do internship in a field of their choice and learn much in return.

Internship

However, if you tailor your resume to the needs of a recruiter looking for interns, your chances of getting selected is much higher.

Include Projects, Seminars and Dissertations in your Resume

Of course as a fresh graduate, you may not be having any relevant work/volunteering experience, but mentioning your coursework that is relevant to your field – the seminars, projects, laboratory work, or dissertations, term papers, etc. that won you those academic laurels could even help you bag an internship in a reputed workplace.

Listing down your academic accomplishments and specific works related to your field during your course can help you jot it all down in your resume. You can have a completely separate section on the coursework you have done that is relevant to your field.

If you are planning to intern in an Ad agency or in the media background, a mention of your campaigns for company/corporate clients and the videos or news articles that you have created can leave an impact on the recruiter if you particularly mention them under your academic achievements at the very beginning of your resume, just after your personal details.

Do not forget to mention your significant contribution towards the project and the outcome you achieved.

Make Your Resume A Concise Document in only a Page

Since you are not experienced, the recruiter would not like to skim through pages on each and every detail about you when you are not even applying for a permanent job with the company. Hence, keeping your resume short and precise is the key to bagging that precious internship in your career.

A resume with multiple pages is only acceptable in certain circles and for people having more than a decade of experience, people for whom it is very difficult to list down all their experiences in a page or two.

Your personal details along with your name, contact details, date of birth and nationality, your main educational profile, skills, field of interest in the internship, future career goals or assignments you are looking forward to should be a part of your curriculum vitae. However, do not make this too long; either limit it to a short para or mention your competencies in few bullet points.

Giving a chronological detail of your educational qualifications starting from the most recent one first along with the name of your institution, degrees you have acquired, the subjects studied and grades obtained. You can also mention particular subjects or classes that are relevant to your field of internship. You can here add in your proficiency in a foreign language as well.

Experience Details in your Resume

Also mention your extra-curricular activities since school and do not hesitate to give details of the tuition classes you have given to juniors or even a summer job at the call centre. Your relevant experiences even if they were unpaid and mentioning your volunteering or part-time temporary jobs or freelancing works under ‘relevant experience’ section can be useful.

Apart from this, if you use concise language and start your phrases with action verbs or adjectives, proofread and edit your resume for spelling and grammar errors, give exact details on your awards and achievements so far, along with a mention of some good references. Don’t forget to keep it professional.

All the Best!

A resume is undoubtedly the piece of paper that is responsible for deciding your fate, your career and marks your life ahead. It is an essential document both for you and the hiring manager in the company where you have applied for a position. It is your life so far in those two pages so the format you must present your skills, knowledge, experience, accomplishments and education is up to you but, it is required to know which format would be best suited to your needs.

Here is a list of three different formats that are commonly used in resume-making:

Traditional/Chronological Resume

This is the most commonly used format of resume and lists down a person’s work history in a reverse chronological order that is starting with the current work experience to the one you began with. If you have had a long, stable and steady work history and wish to continue in the same field, this is the best format you could follow. You can list down your job experiences along with the titles you have been working at and the responsibilities you have carried out so far dating back to a decade at most. All your accomplishments and achievements at each of these companies can be listed down in few pointers. Also, mention how you have driven results and initiated better revenue during your stint with a company. If need be, you can also use numbers and small pie-charts to denote your successes.

Mentioning the roadblocks and how you overcame them in each of the companies you worked with and the different projects you covered are worth including in this format.

If your work experience till now is relevant and in tune with the job you have applied for, you can undoubtedly choose this format. However, if you have had a versatile career stint so far with your recent experience not at all relating to the job you are preparing this resume for, this format will not be able to engage your reader to the end.

Traditional Resume

Functional Resume

This is the resume format that ideally showcases your skills sets and does not give dates and exact tenure of work experiences but focuses on the skills you have learnt in different organizations working in various job profiles. You can give a brief on your work history, the achievements, the challenges, the employers you have worked with and the different responsibilities you have been bestowed with under this job experience. This resume format works best for those who are looking for a change in their career path or have too many gaps in their entire work history. If you are not keen on giving dates and years for each of the places you have worked at, you can choose not to. You may as well highlight your best skills and abilities that you have put to the best use so far and also focus on how you can use them in your present job profile.

After a mention of your skills and accomplishments, do include a brief of your work history but give the dates by year instead of months, along with the positions you have worked for in the company.

Here, you have the freedom to leave out certain company names and positions that you have worked for and give functional headlines or titles instead under which you can list down the professional skills that you have learnt or acquired in your career as yet. Your accomplishments, awards and achievements along with specialised expertise, if any, can also come under these headlines.

You can also include your volunteering or internship experience here and give a mention of the skills that you have learnt in these experiences most importantly. Also, if you are changing careers or switching fields, it is important to let the recruiter know which of your skills that you have learnt in your previous career stint can be used in the current job profile. This is something which if well put can definitely land you with a good job.

This format is however not acceptable or not recommended for some tradition-bound companies that look for employers giving a detailed track record of their job tenures, key responsibilities and basically, how they have utilised their time till now.

Functional Resume

Combination Resume

As the name suggests, this is a resume format that blends in both chronological and functional formats, and would include a reverse chronological list of companies you have worked with, the positions and tenures of your stint with them and also a list of the skills and accomplishments in each of these companies.

This is also a common format used by many in the job market to appease both followers of the traditional format and also provide the hiring manager with the information on what all skills you can bring to the new organization.

Combination Resume

So now you know how to tailor your resume formats according to the jobs you apply to and the companies you plan to involve yourself with. However, in any format you choose to follow, do not forget to mention your contact information, education, previous experiences, accomplishments, challenges and the relevance of your work history according to the job you are applying to. Customize your resume according to the job application and the target position and use key phrases that describe your job position and duties as well as the skills employed in the position. A result-oriented description of your accomplishments and a mention of your dates of employment would be certainly impressive to your employer.

Prepare your resume such that it speaks for you even before the interview is fixed.

Happy Job Hunting!

We want a candidate with a dynamic personality who has good communication skills, has fluency in English, is tech savvy and has good presentation skills.

These are just some of the common requirements every employer has from today’s potential candidates. And we all try to stand up to these requirements through our traditional 8.5” X 11” resume.

But how much are we able to gain and convince our potential employers that we are the ideal candidate when we write about our professional skills, work experiences, highlights and some soft skills in this format, especially when there are piles of resumes lying with the recruiter and our resume is just lost somewhere in those stacks? Are we really able to give a glimpse of our personality and communicate to the recruiter about our achievements and goals and future aspirations through the traditional resume?

Though some employers, depending on the sector of work still prefer the traditional set-up, many employers today are looking forward to methods of visual communication and dynamic content that would provoke them to call a certain candidate for interview.

Yes! I am referring to creating video resumes that can be impactful methods to showcase your personality, communication skills, your fluency in a certain language and of course your internet abilities! Also, a traditional resume sometimes is just not enough to list down your skills, qualifications and abilities, especially when you have gained some ground in your field.

While people might argue that employers will go on a discriminatory mode on our looks, way of speaking, our gestures and an informal presentation of us and our environment around in a video resume, will they not come to know about our looks and accent during the interview and what about the discrimination on our educational background, name, age and work gaps that they can already figure out from our resume?

Recruiters can be discriminatory about petty issues too and this is the reason why more and more candidates are looking forward to incorporating different yet powerful content in their resumes? And what better method than a video resume which will let the recruiter have a feel of your personality, and let him/her know how much you are willing to do to get through this job.

It will certainly give a feel of your seriousness for the job if you take the right steps towards creating a video resume.

Let me elucidate how:

Dress, Duration and Body Language:

Think of your video resume as your interview before the real interview. The potential employer can see you and analyse you as much as s/he would in a job interview.

A formal attire works best here and remember to make it short, only between 1 to 3 minutes, not more than that since the recruiter would not have so much time to go through the entire video if it is any longer than this. You must introduce yourself aptly with your educational and professional details and engage the recruiter with your skills and aptitudes such that s/he is interested to know you further. Also, your disposition should be a cheerful and pleasant one, while eye contact with the camera is a must.

Environmental set-up:

Make sure the background behind you is neat and tidy and you do not have any papers lying around or even in front of you. You must not look down as if reading from a paper while shooting yourself for the video resume.

What should be kept in Mind and what you should focus on:

Many things are self-explanatory in the video such as your height, weight, ethnicity, class and age and the recruiter can catch a hold on all that in the first few seconds. So, it is recommended that you should be confident on how you are the ideal candidate and can add value to the company. This you can also achieve by noting down your strengths and weaknesses and what you want to say through the video beforehand and practicing the same before the real shoot. A good way to begin the video is by mentioning your name and then emphasizing on your professional highlights and responsibilities. Maintain a level of clarity in your speech.

You can undertake several shots at the video before finally uploading it on career sites such as Career Builder, Monster.com, Naukri.com, TimesJobs.com, et al. You can also send a link to the video resume by mentioning the link on your blog site. You can also choose to get a review of your video resume from your friends and family who might point out some technical glitches or professional mistakes which you can correct beforehand. For marketing your video resume and hereby your own personal branding, you can opt to give a link to this resume through your traditional CV or even send the link to your networking contacts.

PowerPoint can come in handy if you can use a video converter to convert and edit the video into a suitable software format. You can also choose to take professional guidance for HD filming and better quality lighting for your video resume. There are some websites which also offer you the tools and effects to make a professional video resume.

A video resume brings out your individuality and it is good to have one if you are applying for jobs in marketing, PR, visual and performing arts, design, photography, video-editing, event management, music, social media marketing, media or advertising fields or even hospitality, retail management and hotel industry.

Mentioning your highlights related to the job you are targeting and being creative with the video only if you are looking for a job in a creative field can do the deal for you.

However, if done inexpertly, it can highlight your worst characteristics and can lose you the interview as well.

So, use the above mentioned techniques and benefit yourself as well as the hiring manager by giving a medium of hiring that is easier, relatively quicker, less discriminatory and of course, gives you the edge among competitors and makes you stand out!

When you have someone who knows you well vouching for your qualifications, abilities and skills in front of your employer, you suddenly feel confident in front of your potential employer during your interview, even if your CV might be all that attractive and impressive!

It seems like the person writing your recommendation or reference letter is sitting right in front of you and talking to the interviewer or the company you have applied to for a job, and enumerating on your qualities.

While many have the same skills as you or at least claim to possess them in their resume, just like you, your recommendation letter, provided it has come from your teacher or a person you have reported to earlier or someone who has seen you put in hard labour for your work, will stand out against all those other resumes and you will not only get noticed by the interviewer or the HR but may also have a better chance at securing the job offer.

However, make sure that the letter is not much focussed on your goodness as a human being or your soft skills, it should specifically highlight why you are the best fit for the job and how talented you are in terms of knowledge and professional skills.

While you might think reference letters have become a passé, employers still like to confirm your details from your past employer or HR of your previous company. A well-written, compact recommendation letter would do just that: it would bring to the fore your background and abilities and will endorse you as a potential candidate for the job.

A Letter of reference from your previous employer where s/he has enlisted your qualities can always emphasize how well you contributed to the growth of the company and if you were a good fit to the company. It shows that you have left the company in good terms and believe in keeping cordial, friendly relationships with your colleagues and employers alike.

If the letter carries the name of the addressed, the title/subject and a brief background about the person who writes it, authenticity of the whole thing certainly increases.

A letter of recommendation is also a valid proof of what you have already mentioned in your resume. In fact, it adds all the more value to your qualifications and highlights the most relevant work experiences in your past that can certainly be beneficial to the company you have applied to, and how. The letter gives the hiring manager a chance to understand your personality traits, your working style, how others have found you as an employee, your strengths and best abilities, and your methods to handle pressure situations.

The mention of your achievements and responsibilities handled on your resume alone do not suffice sometimes and you need people you have worked with for a significant time period to talk about your temperament, leadership skills, friendly behaviour, ability to work in teams and individually and your overall personality. Especially if the recommendation letter is from someone in the same field as you or as the company you have applied to, it portrays that you have good contacts and networking. For instance, if you are going for a job in the MNCs, media or the film business, and have a reference or recommendation letter from an influential person in the fraternity, you are well sorted as you are well-connected. Such fields sometimes require you to have and maintain good contacts.

Not only is it a boost to your skills and accomplishments, the recommendation letter lets your hiring manager know how well you have performed your past responsibilities and your willingness to take up new tasks and build up on fresh initiatives.

See that your recommendation letter also provides the exactly same tenure for your work history and also the credentials, awards and recognition that you have secured in these positions.

For getting the right kind of recommendation letter from your coach, counsellor, professor or previous employer, you must be sure of these points:

Mention your biographical data, work history, job responsibilities to the writer of the letter beforehand. You will also need to let them know the job profile, the company and the kind of company culture you are applying to.

Your talks with the HR about the skills and requirements for the job should be mentioned clearly to the person who is writing the recommendation for you. Your future goals, achievements and certificates you have bagged, if mentioned to the writer will make it all the more easier and specific for the person to draft the letter. A mention of the specific skills you think can help you secure the job for instance, taking initiatives, working on tight deadlines, handling work pressure comfortably, etc. should be stated to the letter writer before the letter is drafted. A tailored recommendation letter according to the specific requirements of the company can best work in your favour.

Even if the recommendation letter is from a very influential person, the hiring manager would certainly call up the person to confirm if s/he has written the letter and to final know more about you from a trusted source, before taking the final decision on keeping you in the job. You need to give a date and if possible, the timeframe when the recruiter might call and also if you want them to include some particular pointers like how good you were in working with teams or speak about your writing and skills of understanding priorities, tell them frankly. The verbal communication should be similar to what has already been mentioned in the letter, otherwise the letter might seem to be fraudulent. However, it should also not appear that the letter writer is just reading out the letter or does not know you that well to comment.

Last but not the least, make sure you are proactive and hard-working enough for the teacher or previous employer to speak in good terms about you. You can have multiple choices for the writer of the recommendation letter and hand over the one letter to your hiring manager which you think suits you best and suits the company even better. However, give them time enough to ponder about what to include in the letter and avoid rushing things up or forcing them to write a lie about you. Also, neither forget to follow up once you have asked the person concerned to write the letter and given the documents required to ask if they need any other help or want to know something more about you nor be mindless enough to forget to thank the person after using the letter. They will be more than pleased to know if you secure the job.

Choosing a person of high authority like the Head, Principal, Professor, head coach or counsellor or a team leader of your previous company is always a go-to move. Opt for a personal meet-up and carry your documents of employment history, credentials and award certificates, etc. when you visit the person and clear him/her on why you are asking for a recommendation letter.

So, go get the cherry on top of your cake, that is the recommendation letter apart from your resume for that dream job you have so dreamt of since your graduation days. However, don’t only rely on the letter as your interview attitudes and behaviour along with your CV and the letter will work together in helping you bag the job. It is ultimately you whose skills, qualifications and experience will do the deal. The recommendation letter will not work wonders alone.

P.S.: You will also come to know through the letter what your teacher/ previous employer thinks about you. (*winks*)

So you have finally created that perfect resume for yourself that abides by all those rules of limiting it to a page or writing a clear-cut objective and a huge list of skill-sets? Well, it turns out that these rules are nothing but myths and mistakes that people commonly make.

Resumes do not have any pre-set rules to begin with; they can be made in the way you deem fit, although the information you need to present should be clear and must include the basics: your name, contact, employment and education details.

Have you often ended up giving little or too much unnecessary detail for your resume whenever you have applied for internships and jobs?

Well then, before you start tailoring your resume for your ‘dream job’, let us take a look at the myths often linked with resumes.

Format Myth: Hiring Managers will prefer functional resume more to a chronological one

Functional resume emphasizes on your skill sets and experience details while chronological ones lists down your employment and educational history in a chronological format. While functional resumes may work for people with limited work experience or employment gaps, it may confuse the recruiter as to when you have pursued what activity for people who have had a considerable amount of experience in their industry. A cover letter with your key experience details and prime skills will work better with a chronological resume for giving the recruiter first-hand information about what you are good at and how you can be beneficial to the company.

Length Myth: One page is enough for a fresher, maybe two will work for experienced candidate

It is true that the recruiter’s attention span while reading your resume will not last more than 15 seconds until and unless the document is compelling enough, or yours is the only resume for the day. However, if you are from the technical background or have years of work experience, more than two degrees or several internships/volunteering experiences, it becomes difficult to compress all that information in one page. You may then only be able to mention the dates and years, the chronology that is, leaving out important accomplishments and highlights in a job profile or during your education. These lists of positions you held and companies you worked with might not be able to capture the attention and interest of the recruiter for long. On the contrary, if you give just the necessary details without the fancy words and use succinct, clear language for all your activities and associations right from your graduation to present job details. Your experience, skills and abilities on the resume must give an impression to the reader that you are the ideal candidate for the company. Presenting yourself as an important asset for the company right from the first page where every word would signify a meaning would definitely persuade the reader to go through more than two pages easily.

Objective Myth: Laying out a clear-cut objective in the beginning is a must

While objectives may work for recent graduates and people looking for a different career path altogether, it might give a different viewpoint to the recruiter about you if you go out to mention what you need from the company in the very beginning. You can either try mentioning what kind of assignments you are looking for and in which kind of firm/industry/company you are willing to work at the start, followed by a qualifications summary or a professional synopsis of your professional as well as soft skills. This way you can engage the reader onto your resume as it enlists your key skills and areas of expertise right at the beginning in a summary format. A recruiter who does not mostly have the time to scan through each and every page of your resume can come to know about you in the synopsis and may hire you right then and there, if the skills you mentioned there meet the requirements of the company and adds value to it.

Employment Myth: Only experience that lent you money can be included in resume

If you think that only paid experience counts in your resume, think again! Your volunteering activities, unpaid internships, college events and community participation – do they hold no value? What you learnt in your exposure as an intern or volunteer is useful and should be a part of your resume as nonetheless, you got to learn new things and you were able to work for your passion and showcased valuable skills. If you have actively participated in community events and college functions or fundraising activities, you might be well-fitted in an organization that is involved in charity or works in favour of certain communities.

Work History Breaks Myth: Resume should show continuity in work

Gaps in the employment period are common now-a-days, especially after recession ended up being an unlucky phase for most people. You can instead mention in your resume about how you used this time to your benefit by volunteering for social work, community activities, some course related to your area of interest, travelling plans, et al. This would instead be beneficial for you as the recruiter will think that you have the capability to take your own career decisions and might add some value to the company.

Resume fits all jobs myth: There is no tailoring required in your resume for different jobs

As opposed to the common practice of job-seekers of sending their resume to several companies at the same time, it is always advisable to customize your resume according to the job you are looking for, only because every job has a different set of requirements and your resume should perfectly show how you would bring more laurels to the company through your skills and experience.

Work History Myth: Resume needs to mention entire work history and responsibilities

Your work experiences that are relevant to the job you are applying for should be the only mention in your resume and none of the other part-time jobs and other work experiences that are not relevant to the current job profile should be included. Recruiters have short attention spans and even lesser time to go through each and every responsibility in each of the companies you have worked with previously. Recruiters would only want to know about your jobs that pertain to their current requirements and not your entire work history maybe, even spanning ten years.

Social Media Myth: Social Media is the best possible way to connect to your recruiters

Social Media sites especially LinkedIn and Facebook might give you good job opportunities and easier networking options, however, attending job fairs, networking events and having professional associations open better avenues for job hunting for you. Posting your updated resume on LinkedIn and other job portals or social media sites alongside can increase your chances of getting noticed by recruiters far more. If you post stories or news related to the current trends in your industry on the social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram or Pinterest, will also give the recruiter a fair idea of your skills and knowledge.

While your resume forms an important opinion of you in front of the recruiter and is the first thing they come across about you, your performance at the interview and/or written exam, if any, is what will eventually get you the job. While you give a broad overview of your accomplishments and achievements along with your skills in your resume, it is in your interview that you expand on those lines and convince the recruiter why you are the ideal candidate who fulfils all their job requirements. So, a good resume does do the trick but your personality as it comes across in the interview makes or breaks the deal for you. Graphs are not a waste of space again in your resume as they can most certainly attract the reader’s attention, although fancy formatting is a big turn-off. Whether you are applying for an entry-level position or a Director’s job, a clear and concise, tightly-written yet with a tinge of colour can enhance your personal branding.

So go ahead and make a statement with your Resume.

If you do not want your resume to be hidden somewhere in a pile of resumes sent by other applicants for the same job profile, you will need to be at your creative best and think beyond the traditional listing down of your work experiences and educational background on the white paper.

Especially when you are applying to a digital marketing agency or for an artistic or design job, an info-graphic or video resume is what you need, not to create an image, but a personal brand for yourself, exhibiting your creative skills, alongside the samples of real work done by you.

While you must be aware of such artistically bound CVs, and probably even overwhelmed by some of the inventive resume samples online, you are also wondering if this should be your lookout while modifying and updating your resume and for applying for different positions, job profiles and companies in such a competitive job market scenario.

We tell you why and when the graphic resumes can come to your aid:

Imposes a powerful statement on your skills and out-of-the-box ideas

If you follow the trend blindly and base your resume on the other info-graphic resume ideas you have viewed till date or clutter your CV with too much graphics, your hiring managers may cringe at it and you may never land that important job position. However, if you come up with your own ideas showcasing your own creative bent of mind and are better able to speak about your accomplishments, skills and abilities through pie charts or bar graphs, and if it is done in a more organized way, you will be able to showcase your experiences, artistic talent as well as your personality, simultaneously.

Leaving a Lasting Impression

An info-graphic resume that gives out the apt amount of information in a visually appealing way, can actually stay in the minds of your recruiter forever and is bound to get you hired. This will simply be the one that will never be lost in the pile of resumes and one that will come to be known as your hallmark. So are you ready to make the first impression even in your absence?

When do you need it the Most:

When your target audience is a start-up company or not a conservative industry

Targeting your audience is very necessary before you sit down to redesign your CV. Your recruiter will look for keywords and information that will be necessary for his/her requirements and would want to have a look at an error-free CV. If through your graphic CV, you can emphasize on your skill sets and experiences that will benefit the employer, it will be beneficial for you. You can also opt to share your info-graphic resume on Linkedin or other social media profiles, in addition to having a traditional CV that you carry to your job interviews. While this kind of CV will work for some recruiters, it might give the impression to some that you are not serious about the job. So be careful about the kind of company and recruiter you are targeting before sending this resume application. Info-graphic resume will not work well if you are applying for the position of an accountant or any other traditional set-up. It is also advised to customize your CVs according to the job profiles and companies you are aiming for, each time.

When you intend to highlight your results

You can portray sharp and clever info-graphics that are directly related to the role you are targeting and exhibit a visual that is both impressive and effective be it through charts or graphs or maps, showing your past accomplishments and your inner drive to work with the company and the role.

You can also mention how well you have achieved targets or your growth in a certain past company through graphs and bars, either giving the percentage, number of leads you generated and the revenue therefrom, et al. While traditional resumes deal more with your accountabilities and the chronology of it all, the info-graphic resume will focus on the results and will certainly engage the reader, especially profiting those in sales and marketing, whose job profile is outcome-driven.

Now the question is how you can build up this intensive resume. Just follow these tips:

The Visual Data

Choose the right kind of visualization for the data you intend to offer. If you want to talk about your skills, you can use bar or column charts, but not an area chart as it will make the whole deal more confusing. Line charts can be useful for chronological data or a time series. Give the visual appeal to your recruiter by trying to create an interesting interaction with the viewer. You can take help from sites such as gliffy.com or draw.io to make your resume more fun-tastic. However, do not just randomly impose shapes and your favourite colours all over your resume.

The Colour Schemes

Use colours in your resume which are soothing and can be appealing both to you and the recruiter. Instead of a mix and match, you can choose a light background with single colour and multiple shades or tones. Using bright colours like yellow and orange can be too stark and distracting. So, it is always better to stick to black, white and gray along with one or two other colours just used for highlighting or giving the special effect. Purple, green, blue and brown all work great in single or different shades on a resume.

KISS: Keep it simple and short

Make your resume easy to read and understand by not going overboard with colours and headings. Highlight numbers and headings with some information that would provoke the reader to ask for more. Tell only the most relevant data and do not try to fit everything into charts and bar graphs. Also, do not indulge yourself in writing long pages about yourself as the recruiter will not have so much time to go through your entire set of responsibilities and work/education details. Your resume, in other words is your bio-data (selected information) and not your biography.

Make your resume do storytelling

Your resume should not give your life history but must definitely give an insight into your personality and abilities. While being precise, it should also be interesting, creative and engaging. Use imagery that make the most sense with your stint with brands, telling a story about who you are, what kind of a job you are looking for and why you are the best-suited candidate for the job.

End your resume with a directive for the reader

You can always be more interactive in your resume by asking them to follow your links on twitter or your blog on word press. If you fail to engage your reader, your hiring manager may not regard your resume as anything important or striking and you may end up losing your dream job, despite your potential for the role.

You can break the monotony in CVs by using different yet decent and readable fonts, using section breaks, maintaining continuity and consistency in the colours and fonts and maintaining brevity.

Use these tips to take your career to a whole new level and see how being creative can take you places and land you better jobs.

However the industry or profile you’ve been working in for so long, did not make your proficient with the skills or experience required for your dream job profile.

Whether you’re planning a career change, or are a new graduate with only internships in your bag, you can always make your irrelevant experience matter on your resume.

We tell you how.

Valuable skills

Most resumes begin education followed by work experience. However, work experience will not be you strength if you’re planning to change your career or are a new graduate. So, rather than sitting and wasting time on updating your resume that would impress the recruiter, think of your skills that could be valuable for the profile.

There would be a reason for you to consider applying to this job. Try binding all your skills together with a summary statement at the beginning of your resume.

Academic projects

Academic projects in your resume talk about how much have you participated in the area which is related to the job profile you’re applying to. As long as you’re honest and are knowledgeable about the project, nothing should prevent you from adding it as an experience on your resume.

Write about the project elaborately, as you’d write about a particular job role you fulfilled.

Cover letter

A cover letter is your best bait to hook a prospective employer to your resume. It is the only space outside your resume to make a first good impression. Your cover letter introduces you to an employer in a specific way- the way in which your skills that would be required for the job, are highlighted. It highlights what unique skills and ways are you capable of introducing to the company.

You would want to spell it out for the recruiting managers and explain why though you have no relevant experience in the industry, you’re prefect for the job and can bring a good growth and profit to the organization. Write about it in a way, which impresses the recruiting manager about your valuable skills and irrelevant experience.

Building a career in something which you’ve had no prior experience of, but are interested in taking up, is not an easy task. You need to possess a knowledge about the in and out of the industry. To make your resume get shortlisted in such cases, break some patented “resume rules,” and add a cover letter to make the recruiting manager know your worth.

You and any other candidate looking forward to a particular job profile are in no way same.

As a job seeking candidate, it is obvious to look at hiring managers as big boulders in the way to achieve success. However, not always hiring managers are to be blamed for the reason you could not land yourself that job.

Hiring managers read a number of resumes, and they shortlist those candidates who have their resumes doing the type of sophisticated talk, which they would do if they had been present.

We suggest a few tips you can implement while updating your resume, that’ll help explain your qualities to a recruiter.

Relevant Points in bold

If you’ve been given a piece of writing for a question you asked, and are unable to find the exact solution to the issue, the situation is very much similar to what a hiring manager goes through while looking through your resume.

No recruiter is interested in knowing the story of your professional life, unless they find your experience and skills intriguing. So the best thing to do is to highlight/bold the relevant points, like your positions and duration, to make it easy for the recruiter to go through your resume. That would also convey your hiring manager about how good an organizer you are.

Avoid too much use of text

Frankly speaking, no recruiter is interested in knowing about the whole of your professional life story. It’s next to impossible to list each and every detail of the jobs you’ve had till date. So, check out the job responsibilities mentioned on the portal and use only the amount of details, that you think is relevant for the profile. Presenting your resume in such a way will also give the recruiting manager an impression that you’re a good contemplator.

To the point skills

Cut your skill set short and make sure you keep it to the point. There is no way your resume can make a strong case for your skills and experiences if the language you use is confusing, rough, or hard to make-out. Being concise and specific in your resume will tell the hiring manager that apart from being a good organizer and contemplator, you’re also good at practicing relevancy.

Recruiter’s perspective

Once you’re done updating your resume, check it out from the eyes of a recruiter. Would you shortlist a resume like yours if you were one of them? Because you’ll be able to scroll through the highlighted details easily, you’ll know about the candidate faster than you’ll get to know others. So, avoid inflated descriptions and use precise and concise matter in your resume.

Most organizations have a computer generated applicant tracking system installed on their website. However, to get past the ‘human’ eyes of a recruiter, you may want to keep your resume up to the mark, and in a way that impresses the hiring manager.

In search of a new job, candidates end up spending most of their time, updating their skills and experience on their resume.

The more appropriate content your resume has, more will it be visible to the recruiters.

Most job seekers believe that the section of a resume which contains hobbies and interests go unnoticed. Well, to be frank it does not get unnoticed unless it talks about something that’s different from other resumes.

Your resume is something that talks for you, in your absence.

Adding or omitting anything to it which is not real, could decrease your visibility and make you sound like an exaggerator in front of a recruiter.

We tell you about a few things you should consider while mentioning your hobby and interests in your resume.

Window to your personality

Hobbies and interests are something to talk about. They define a candidate’s personality and is a window to it. If you’ve mentioned stuff like reading, travelling, music, internet browsing etc. in the hobbies section, your hobbies are nothing different from most of the candidates, which is why you don’t stand out from the crowd. So talk about a hobby that defines you as a professional.

Degree of Uniqueness

An employer selected an inexperienced candidate for as much salary as an individual two positions senior received. Why you ask? Because she had this unique hobby of educating children from underprivileged sections of the society. The post she applied for was of a Human Resource Manager, and the employer said that while most of the candidates were experienced and liked to travel and read in their free time, this woman dedicated her free time to do something constructive. Now you know what I mean when I say, degree of uniqueness.

Demonstrative

You may like thinking about weird stuff. That, however, is nowhere close to be called a hobby. If you mentioned something like ‘narrating creative stories,’ be ready to narrate one in the interview. Like other sections of your resume, you need to customize this part according to the way you’d present it. So think before you mention dancing or club hopping. (wink)

Related to job profile

It does not really have to be on the same plane as your job profile, but something that could boost your professional skills and help your personality shine. If you have more than one hobby, you can easily mention one that’s off the record and one that’s on.

Honesty

If while going through the internet, you came across a resume that mentions river rafting or bungee jumping as a hobby, liked it, and thought of using the same for yours, I suggest you chuck the idea right now. Recruiters have their own way of finding out about you. So, if you are not somebody who’s even close to liking adventure sports, maybe you should talk about something you honestly love doing. Even if it’s reading, mention what genre of books have you read and which others would you like to read.

While your experience and skills tell a recruiter about your professional background, your hobbies and interests convey tell them about your personality. After all, there’s always a way to make your personality count better than the others.

And why shouldn’t they?

After all your resume is the only way to tell a hiring manager, why exactly will you be suitable for the job.

However, in an effort to be as truthful as possible, your resume could end up being somewhat boring.

While it’s definitely important to be truthful in your resume, it doesn’t mean that you cannot highlight your skills, and in turn make your resume look different than the others.

So, the best way to tell your prospective employer about why you’re the best candidate for a particular job role is by highlighting a few factors.

Your impact

It does not matter if the job listing which you considered sending your resume to, mentioned anything about your resume or not. It’s always a good idea to showcase the impact you were able to draw upon in particular project. To highlight your impact, try mentioning the results of your work undeniably. Use numbers if possible.

Teamwork

There is absolutely no company which does not require team working skills in an employee. And in any case if the job description does not mention anything about working in a team, it by-default means that the candidate should be a team player. Try including the number of team members you’ve worked with earlier and what project did you work on. In the interview, rather than taking all credits yourself, feel free to talk about others who carried their duties well.

Communication skills

There may not be any use of mentioning extremely-sophisticated or overboard words in your resume. However, using phrases that often over a part of your daily activities at work may give the hiring manager a briefing about your communication skills.

Work under pressure

Though your resume shouldn’t really talk about in what circumstances and how did you handle work pressure, your cover letter can include a brief instance, that can summarize your capacity of working under pressure to your prospective recruiter. Try not to include only your participation, but how actively did you take part, and which situation did you handle without being crushed.

Self motivated

Employers look for people who are self-motivated and need least amount of effort and training to adopt to the new job role. They are scrutinizing resumes to gain information on how motivated a candidate might be on a job. Tell them how did you balance your responsibilities at your previous work place, and how did it turn out to be effective for the whole team.

Your resume is not only a document that assures you a new job, but is something that should interest the recruiter in your profile. Read the job description and then go through your resume, as if you were to answer a question in the exam. Make the necessary changes and you’re are good to go.

In this age of online recruiting and technology based hiring, a general query that arises in the mind of a job seeker is that whether recruiters might have time to scan through the cover letter or is the process outdated.

Frankly speaking, a cover letter is your best bait to hook a prospective employer to your resume. It is the only space you have outside your resume to make a first good impression. Here’s why a cover letter is as or more helpful than your resume, in getting you a job of your choice.

Highlights your key accomplishments

When employers create a job description, it is mostly a list of things they are looking forward to see in their prospective employee’s skill set. While your resume talks about the best on the list of your accomplishments, your cover letter describes most on that list including facts and numbers, especially the ones related to the job description. Apart from your accomplishments, even your abilities are highlighted in a cover letter.

Conveys what job position you seek

Your cover letter introduces you to your prospective employer, and adds focus to your resume. A cover letter tells the hiring manager why is the job so important to you and whether or not are you fit for the position. As your unique skills and qualities are included in the cover letter, there’s nothing better to speak for you, in your absence, not even your resume.

How fit are you are the role

The cover letter allows you to impress the employer about the role in a very specific way, leaving your resume to market your skills and experience on a bigger perspective. Your resume would need less tweaking for every job you apply to, as the cover letter does most of the job for you. It highlights what unique skills and ways you are capable of introducing to the company.

Explains things your resume does not

If you’ve had big gaps in your career, a zigzag employment history, or not-so-impressive timeline of working in a particular industry, your cover letter is capable of explaining the circumstances in a positive way, which your resume cannot.

A resume is of limited importance to an employer if he/she does not know what kind of work are you interested in. However, a cover letter explains the what, why and how of your profile and tells your prospective employer why are you fit for the role. So not only are cover letters inevitable, but are also extremely important to land you a job of your choice.

You and every other professional working in the industry are in no way the same.

Similarly, a resume prepared for a particular industry, cannot be used to apply for all the jobs available in that industry. As no two job candidates are alike, neither are any two jobs.

Because recruiting managers do not have as much time as to read through each and every detail of your resume, your resume should be tweaked in a way, that appeals to a particular recruiter.

We tell you why you need to tailor your resume for every job you apply to.

– What is the recruiter looking for

While you’re looking for a switch badly, you don’t generally see what a particular job role demands for. All you are able to see is the requirement of a professional with the qualifications you possess. You assume that the positions you’re applying to are similar enough to send off, the one resume you’ve kept updated about yourself. This, however, is a huge mistake.

Not all companies look for the same thing. Maybe, the position they mentioned about is same as the one you wish to apply to, but the job description and roles differ from one job to another. Understand what the recruiter is looking forward to receive, and twist your resume accordingly.

– Your professional life story

No recruiter is interested in knowing the story of your professional life, unless they find your experience and skills intriguing. It’s next to impossible to list each and every detail of the jobs you’ve had till date. So, check out the responsibilities a candidate is expected to deliver in a particular job role. If possible, check out the company’s website and add elements to your resume that relate to their services or products.

– Emphasis on relevant points

Agreed that here are some elements every resume should have regardless of its intended recipient. However, the hiring manager will stop only at something that highlights your achievements in the department related to the job description. So, try outing emphasis on what’s most important and use strategic keywords, as used in the job role.

– Keywords can help you get shortlisted

Most organizations use applicant-tracking systems to sort through large volumes of resumes they receive and identify potential candidate through the process. As soon as a candidate submits the resume, the tracking system mines data from it, by using relevant keywords and saves your information for the recruiters to review. Now you know why using a particular set of words for a particular job is important for you to get that job.

Tailoring your resume increases your chances of success. Showcasing the same product for every consumer, will not only waste your time and energy, but might also de-motivate you, as very few of them might revert.

There would have been times when you applied and never heard back.

While getting a job is the first thing on your mind once you complete your education, your resume should be free of cardinal mistakes to ensure that it does not land in the dustbin. Charting out your life’s objectives in one simple page could be difficult.

We tell you about things you have the option to leave out in your resume. Read on.

1. Irrelevant work experiences

You might have served as a volunteer or organizer in your college fest but including that in your resume might make the recruiter uninterested in your profile, as too much information reduces the importance of your work experience. Talk only about those jobs which means something to the job profile you applied to.

2. Too much personal details

You need to make a conscious effort to NOT let your resume sound like a biodata or a profile for matrimonial services. Nobody, especially your prospective recruiter, is interested in knowing your height, weight, political orientation, religion, details of your parents, or even your blood group. They might want to know that once you are hired, but not during your first step towards the job.

3. Schooling information

While your percentage in 10th and 12th is of as much importance as your graduation marks, you need not include every single detail about your school, once you have a graduation degree. For example, if by any chance you had to change schools during primary or secondary section, the details are not required on your resume. Include only your percentage, school name and the board it was affiliated to.

4. Unrelated hobbies

It’s true that a number of recruiters out there love to learn about your hobbies and form an impression of you because of your interests. Mentioning your hobbies just because you found it on the best sample over the internet could give the other side a wrong impression about you. For example, if you write about sports you could include reading books and your favourite sport as well, not something like playing guitar.

5. Salary in previous jobs

Remember that your salary is the last or second last thing that comes into picture, in your recruitment procedure. You will anyway be offered the job, if the recruiter finds you worthy enough for it. So listing your current salary or what you were paid initially, is inappropriate to mention in your resume.

6. Photograph

Most companies do not require a photograph with the resume, the reason being equal employment opportunity given to all without exception. But again, it depends on the industry you’re working in. If you’re a model or an actor, you will be required to give your portfolio along with your resume. But otherwise, a photograph isn’t necessary for your resume.

7. Too much contact information

Your prospective recruiter is not going to visit your permanent home or even temporary for that matter. The only way they are going to contact you is via phone or email. So, there’s absolutely no need of mentioning your permanent or temporary address in your resume. An email address and your contact number is enough.

Because your resume should contain information related to the job you are applying for, including contents that is relevant for the job profile is very important. The hiring manager will just skim through your profile and see your qualifications, without wanting to know much about you.
