To all those lucky chaps, who still get to relish the good times of hostel life, let’s rewind the time for those like me, who are living in nostalgia, few years post graduating.

Maggi is not only the ultimate-resort- food, but also something that all the hostelers could unite for.

Most of you would agree with me on this. You have tried experimenting your culinary skills in making maggi with a twist. Have you not? When bored or completing assignment during odd hours, you’d just step into kitchen and think of all the weird things you could add upto maggi to make it all the more, killer (wink). Not sure if your so called dish turned out to be great, but meri timepass wali Maggi turned out to be good. To make your Maggi more interesting try these…

Maggi Cutlet:

Take two slices of bread. Dip in water for 3-4 minutes. While the slices get soaked in water, prepare maggi in a saucepan, like you’d do normally. Next, take the water soaked slices, an apt amount of maggi to stuff and bind it tightly within. Make sure not to put too much of stress on the slices. Deep fry in a vessel or if you’re health conscious, bake in an oven. Serve with ketchup.

Maggi Subway:

Cook maggi and keep aside. Take a subway bread. You could also use normal bread slices, incase you don’t have subway. Slice veggies of your choice. I like to add cucumber, tomato, onion and jalapenos to mine. Slice the sub lengthwise, stuff the veggies,and maggi,and add choices and toppings of your choice. Serve.

Poha Maggi:

Crush 2 packs of Maggi Atta noodles before opening the pack. Cook till all the water is absorbed. Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds(optional), peanuts(optional), tomatoes, onions. Cook till golden brown. Add chopped boiled potatoes, green chillies and peas. Add the noodles. Simmer for five minutes. Serve hot with chutney.

Girls hostels – Bollywood is a raving maniac about teen lives and they spin a yarn about them too giving us insurmountable goals. Like in recent past, a movie was released called Student of The Year which shed light on the lives of students belonging from well-to-do households walking into college in designer clothes.

Of course that is way out of our league and we just end up with the stomach in knots. However, they are keen on showing the hostel lives and leave no stone unturned to glamourize it.

However, the real hostel lives not a bed of roses always and you come out as a better person, of course by experiencing stern realities of life from a government hostel. And trust us, those experiences are nothing at par with the ones shown in Bollywood movies.

Girls hostels –

1 – Girls don’t roam around in sexy lingerie around the hostel:

Well, if you are udging a common girls hostels bythe ones shown in Karan Johar movies, then you my dear is really ambitious. This is a common sight in the government hostels of hanging worn-out shorts like chunks of meat hanging in meat shops.

2 – There is not even change of clothes for 5 days in a row:

Yeah, because washing clothes becomes really tedious in a crowded girls’ hostel or we are just way too lazy to do so. Besides, there won’t be any song sequence happening on us so that we need to change costumes. Meh!

3 – The cat fights in girls hostels are as sexy as shown in the movies:

There is a lot of hand-to-hand combat, grouping, back-bitching involved. Even days of bullying and cornering the victim is also a predominant phenomenon in a government girls’ hostel unlike the ones in Bollywood movies where ‘gentle’ women fight as if hurling flower petals at each other.

4 – Girls don’t pillow fight at night:

The Girls hostels girls certainly don’t pillow fight at night. Instead, they keep awake until late munching on munchies and mug up for semesters. They even soothe their mid-night hunger pangs by making Maggi at 3:00 am. Guess what? They don’t even get a proper pillow to keep under their head, forget pillow fighting.

5 – Girls don’t only discuss clothes and make-up in the hostel:

Well, there is a serious dearth of  Sarah Jessica Parker of Sex and the City or Jenifer Anniston of F.R.I.E.N.D.S  in the government girls hostels.

6 – The Wifi is El Dorado for government hostel girls:

Well, not much into being Papa ki pari like the Bollywood girls’ hostel counterparts. We only ask from god for a good WiFi connection so as to finish 3 series of Game of Thrones before the semester.

7 – Not always ‘Lesbian action’ go behind the doors:

Sorry, to burst your bubble, but no!

Girls hostels – Glamourizing is good, but running miles away from reality makes you a laughing stock. Wake up, Bollywood!

1. Mess’ Food

You have no other option but rely on hostel’s mess food. Simple and similar dishes are provided by canteen which of course after sometime can bore anybody easily.

2. Less Facilities.

Hostels hardly provide you many facilities. The ratio of students’ and toilet is very less. And to make it worse are the long queues in the early morning.  Crowded rooms, not so cool beds to sleep on, poor hygiene are some of the factors which make living at hostel little difficulty.

3. Home Sickness

Moving away from home gives a very ecstatic feeling but soon the novelty factor vanishes off and students are struck by home sickness. Everything around pisses off students as they badly miss their parents, home-made food and of course relaxed environment which one cannot get anywhere.

4. Many tend to learn Bad Habits to feel accepted.

Hostel life introduces many good and bad things and one the bad things are students getting lured by bad habits. Many fall to these habits under pressure. If students do not behave like others then they feel cornered or bullied.

5. No or less privacy.

Lack of privacy is also massive problem student faces in hostel. Mostly around 2-3 people are made to stay in one room. If you are the lucky one then you might get a single or just one partner.

6. Independence- Learn to be on your own.

Being independent is one of important aspects in life and in hostel one gets the sense of freedom that one cannot get at home. Here one has to be on his/her terms. This opportunity is important which will help students in future.

7. Fun, friendship, bonding.

The level of bonding and fun one gets cannot be compared. Here you can learn how to cooperate and work in tandem which also sets the healthy competition. Friends play cupid, crazy birthday party celebrations, endless pranks are part and parcel of hostel life.

8. Sharing and Caring!

One can understand the value of their belongings and true sense of sharing in hostel. In hostel everything belongs to others.

9. Growth and exposure

At hostel one gets many opportunities to explore themselves, learn new aspects and arena. Hostel life acts as launch pad for many interesting prospects.
