Over more than five centuries that Native Americans are still called Indians. It has been years that discoverer and explorer Christopher Columbus had found America. Confusing America with India he had introduced this continent as India. Indigenous people were known as Indians after its discovery. 

Through the sea route, Columbus had traveled throughout the world was looking for the Indus valley civilization. In the 15th century instead of reaching India, he reached to American continents. Native are thereafter known as Indians. 

Native Americans are still called Indians

Often people may confuse Indians with the Asian country. But it is true that apart from India, Asia the natives of America are known the same. The languages of the Native and the First Nations people differ but the former is believed to know the Algonquian group’s language. There are changes and differences observed even after many years with the formation of the New World. 

The Algonquian group’s language is from the Northern part of America. The groups range from the North to the Rocky mountains. Though the continent has been changing with time adapting to modern ways and people. Open-minded to new ideas and life but the changes in languages can be realized from one range to another. This language has given many words or vocabulary to the English language. Inspired by the Algonquian nation there are also few names of states and cities. Michigan, Connecticut, and Delaware are stated from the origin. Odawa people live in Ottawa, which is the capital of Canada. 

The connection of the indigenous people, language have now blended with the First Nation. They are separated from the rests part of the continent but their individuality can still be realized. Few more groups that are added to the lists are the Eskimos and Native Alaska. 

 Culture of The Indians 

Though the continent was discovered a few centuries back they were living in the continent from 12,000 BC approximately. There were widespread of not one but various indigenous groups with changes in culture. It proved that the settlement in South America was longer. Variations in culture, lifestyle, and food existed which pointed at the years of developments. 

Utes people are the settlements that are seen at the Great Basin. Utah is the state in the US, one of the oldest places that were named after its people Utes. Similar to the name of ancient places, the state was renamed, another well-known is the Okla Homma, derived from Oklahoma. 

One of the strongest cultures that are famous is the porcupine hairs to make classy hair brushes. Different styles and shapes of the hairbrushes and toothbrushes were made for their regular uses. Even in modern times, the brushes are used by the Americans.  

It was in the 11 century that there was contact between the Europeans and the Indians or the indigenous people. Even in modern times, the population of 5.2 million live in the tribal land areas. The Native Indians are still known due to their presence in the areas for centuries.

Comparing the present Sun Dance to the older form has changed. It was a ban on sundance due to bloodshed offerings to satisfy the God of Nature. This is one of the oldest traditions that are performed by the Native Americans. Mostly the people of Canada to edging corners of North America perform the rituals. For the tribes of North Americans from the different parts of villages and outskirts, the sundance is a ceremony to celebrate.

Drums and music by Native Americans

Present performances of the ritual are with drums and music. The festival continues through the day from the afternoon pushing to the night. Normally young generation participates who are energetic to continue beating drums and playing ceremonial pipes.

In a world with digital exposures through videos and pictures the capturing of the ceremony is restricted.

Dance and other activities

Mostly tribes from Lakota, Nakota, Dakota, and Cheyenne perform the rituals with personal offerings. The dancers and participants fast for days as a part of the rituals. They have to stay in the open air without any shade from nature; it may be the severe sun or heavy rainfall. The dancers then pray in the form of dance to satisfy the Nature God.

Native American’s old people or elders know about the rituals that guide them leaders and the groups taking part in the celebration of sundance. Activities such as feasts, open-air camps, and also piercings are some of the common activities of the ceremony.

Rituals

The rituals have been continuing for generations after generations. Rituals include sacrifices, sacred fire burning throughout the ceremony till the fasting. Earlier offerings were fleshed and blood to satisfy and heal Nature.

This was a way to calm down the severity of nature that will bring prosperity and growth to their people. Both for the earth and sun, the offerings are arranged to keep showering their blessings on them.

Ban of Sun Dance

The sundance is banned in the US, it is restricted to only the tribal people. With the influence of modern times, there are changes to the offerings by Native Americans. People are now less confined to bloodshed and flesh to satisfy mother earth and the Sun.

The banning of the ceremony was in 1904 but still, the Native American tribes continue with their beliefs even after decades. The participants were tortured as their fleshes were torn pulling and hanging them from the poles. Apart from it, the piercings were on the breasts and other body parts that were inhumane with severe bloodsheds. The entire process was after they were fasting for days and dancing the whole day.

Apart from it animal skulls such as buffaloes and eagles are necessary to complete the rituals and offerings. The tribals are also great buffalo hunters as described in the history of their lifestyles. Hereby, sundance is still the main part of the tribals of North America but many do not participate in sundance due to the inhuman involvement and offerings to God which is also unrealistic.

Indians are in demand now!

Not that we were out of demand ever going by the mass migration to various countries, in fact every country of the world in past 100 or more years!

The difference is that earlier we were only required to do labour intensive jobs, which is still the major employment sector for Indians the world over and now Indian citizens are being given jobs of substance, power and authority! This means that we are in a position where we can actually change the way the world functions and are able to contribute to the society in a manner befitting our varied talents and skill sets!

After being CEO’s of some of the biggest companies in the world, being part of UN in a big manner, another gem to add on to our success stories abroad is the appointment of four Indian-origin Canadians as ministers in the newly elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet!

These are 42 years old Harjit Sajjan as the defence minister, 38 yr old Navdeep Bains as minister for innovation, science and economic development, Amarjeet Sodhi as minister for infrastructure and Bardish Chagger as Minister of small business and tourism!

Can you just imagine the importance of it? An Indian as the defence minister of a country consisting majorly of white people! This has nothing to do with the colour of skin, but the thought that he has been able to work his way up and gain that kind of trust and confidence in him from the electorate that they feel he is right guy to guard their borders!

This has everything to do with the right mindset that one can achieve anything, anywhere in the world, only if you have the will power and are ready to adapt to situations and make them work to your advantage! Indians are now heading big organisations, are being part of American government’s administration, just made it big in Canadian government and are making their worth felt the world over in various other positions. This might not mean that very soon we will have Indian-origin country heads in every country, but it surely means that our distinctive skill sets and talents are recognized globally. We are no longer just a commercial market, but are taken seriously for what our real worth is!

It’s no time to sit on our laurels, but to work double hard to make our and our fellow human beings’ life a lot easier and contribute in a productive manner to the society we are part of. This is surely India’s century and let nothing, not even our arrogance, ignorance or stupidities, stop us from making a mark!
