Of Personal Attacks and Rahul’s Ambitions

The Congress scion reportedly told a bunch of newly recruited party spokespersons to refrain from making ‘˜personal’ attacks on the opposition. Rahul has become ambitious, and understanding, just far too late.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has been stirring up many controversies, some even without his knowledge. Reigning in his party spokespersons is a big task as Congress is one mouthful party. But it seems Rahul has come to understand the importance of such negative and stupid comments which cost party – if not directly – a lot.

The Congress scion reportedly told a bunch of newly recruited party spokespersons to refrain from making ‘personal’ attacks on the opposition and rather focus on nailing what he called the “lies” of the opposition.

Although Rahul did not name anybody, but his actions are being seen in response to Mani Shankar Aiyar’s controversial jibe at the Bhartiya Janata Party prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. Aiyar, at the AICC meet in Delhi, had said, “Narendra Modi will never become the Prime Minister of the country. But if he wants to distribute tea here, we will find a place for him.”

It is not only Aiyar, but other Congress senior leaders like Digvijay Singh and Sushil Kumar Shinde, who had used “chaiwala” jibe for Modi.

The statement has worked for advantage of BJP and the party is politically exploiting it very smartly. No rally of Modi or any BJP leader goes without raking up the issue. The party has already announced the launch of a campaign that will allow people to engage with Modi over a cup of tea.

BJP will embark on a mass contact programme from February 12, engaging with people at tea shops across the country, with the goal of reaching out to nearly 20 million people across the nation. Two TV sets will be installed at tea shops in 1,000 locations in 300 cities and people will interact with Modi and other BJP leaders at these ‘chai chaupals’.

The move shows that Rahul is now understanding the importance of ‘statements’ in political pitch and he does not want any speck of controversy for the Congress party now that it is already in much dirt. His effort to reign in the Congress members is nonetheless cute but where was he all these years? He should have showed this ‘sane’ side of his a bit earlier so that the Congress party did not have a bleak future as it has now.

Rahul has become ambitious, and understanding, just far too late.
