Same judge charged with sexual harassment again

This not only reflects that the lawmakers themselves are misusing the law, it is also sending a bad signal into the society which is already full of stories of crime against women.

Barely a week after a young lawyer alleged a Supreme Court judge of sexually harassing her while she was interning with him, another lawyer wrote about the same judge harassing her too.

The second intern put her allegation on facebook two days ago. “He promised, incidentally, that he would never misbehave with another lady. Maybe it’s naivete to believe him. Maybe it’s just youthful optimism. Being brave is tougher than it appears on the face of it, no? (Stella James) has oodles of courage,” she had posted on her wall.

Website Legally India, which broke the story of first intern too, has reported the incidence afresh.

“I’ve been at the receiving end of unsolicited sexual advance more than once, and so has she (first intern, Stella James). And we kept attributing all the signs of leeriness to our hypersensitivity to such situations, mistrusting our instincts,” she had added. (Read Legally India’s report here)

The name of second intern was not disclosed by the website.

Stella James, the first intern, was interviewed by the website who had put up a blog over the torment she went through. She is to testify in front of the probe panel created to look into the matter by the Supreme Court on Monday. (Read entire blog on Indian Journal of Law and Society here)

A former Delhi University lecturer has also filed a police complaint based on James’ comment. Professor SN Singh has demanded an independent police investigation into the allegations saying that the judges’ inquiry is in-house and has no legal sanctity.

As the country holds Supreme Court in great regard for being an independent body delivering justicein the democratic incidence, the gruesome charges on one of its judges (now retired) has surely put a dent in its image.

This not only reflects that the lawmakers themselves are misusing the law, it is also sending a bad signal into the society which is already full of stories of crime against women.

Even after stringent laws in place, it is disheartening to see lawmakers abusing the law and breaching public trust.
