How appropriate is it to look westwards for work during crisis?

Moving abroad for work in times of economic disaster has for long been the saving style for Indians

Moving abroad for work in times of economic disaster has for long been the saving style for Indians – if prospect at home are dim, but the credentials on your resume are high enough, try your options overseas.

This mantra, though, is generally short-term. The ordinary reason to it is that the world at large is experiencing the economic downgrade. As per current news from International Monetary Fund (IMF), the year’s global economic growth is predicted at 3.9 percent, down from the previous estimate of 4.1 percent.

This viewpoint towards global growth is not shocking, as sharp cuts are likely from growth predictions for big budding economies like China, India, Brazil and lately industrialised Asia.

1) Discover prospects in India, China and South East Asia as against the West

In comparison to the West, South East-Asia has not been as influenced with the current plunge in the global market because of the flexible economic conditions. In addition, the forward movement tilts eastward – particularly as India and China are on the brink of becoming the world’s preferred investment destinations. One has to be prepared to discover prospects in India, China and South East Asia as against the West as consumer demand, manufacturing, and ever more higher value added services are moving east.

Whereas the attraction of the West has forever been on the wish list of Indians and other Asian communities, making a run for Western countries during crisis may be an exercise in the dark.

2) Heading west can just make it shoddier

No part of the globe, today, is entirely decoupled from recessionary powers. Every data being published in last few months confirms that the sluggishness of world economy and there is an alarming recession. Though, it seems that the situation in India is bad, heading west can simply make it inferior.

UK, US and a host of European countries have taken steps to limit the migration of people and the norms for getting jobs at these places have become more rigorous, particularly in UK. Even Middle East has slowed down in terms of growth and thus the job chances have decreased significantly. So, it is still better to stay in India.

3) Why shifting westwards might not be an intelligent step to take

Another cause why shifting abroad might not be an intelligent step to take is the truth that India is still, despite the crisis as it may be termed, is full of prospects. It takes one some research to spot the right sectors and companies within those sectors.

There are sectors in the Indian economy, which are still developing or at least not facing a slump. Education and health are two sectors that will stay fruitful for a long time. While the financial industry is in despair, the capability to find jobs in marketing and sales of any sector will still be probable and re-skilling would certainly be the way to go.

4) Best mantra is to hang about in India and discover prospects here

This obviously denotes that it makes logic to hang about India than heading overseas. The best thing to do for most Indians, usually between the age group of 20 to 35 is to use time enhancing skills and abilities that are job-centric instead of looking for greener pastures in a foreign country.

Professionals must join several short time courses and look for freelance openings, than shifting jobs globally. Job prospects generally open up at normal periods. So, heading westwards during crisis is not the correct move, at least not without looking at the grass on your own side!
