When you see a former top heroine playing a baddie in a movie, you feel a little dejected. Because you have watched the actress rule the roost and you heart, watching her do merciless stuff onscreen is a turn off. Despite such criticism from fans, actors and directors continue to explore this genre of a former leading lady wrecking havoc in a negative character.

The vivacious heroine of the 90s, Juhi Chawla, is all set to play a negative character in the upcoming ‘Gulab Gang’ and it would be rather interesting to watch her shed her cutesy twang and put on her mean cap. The hearthrob of the era gone by may or may not accepted in this role, as there are chances of her contemporary and former rival Madhuri Dixit, who plays the main lead, walking away with all the glory.

Juhi has always played the curly-haired sweet girl, so it would be really tough to imagine her in a role laced with negative streaks. Despite her not being one of the leading ladies in B-Town now, we remember her for her bubbly ways. She has a mammoth task of living up to our expectations and let’s hope that she fares well. We would hate to see her being overshadowed by the million-dollar-smile beauty Madhuri.

We know that actresses do it for the challenge, but how many top ones have been able pull this feat off? Hema Mali, in her only negative role in ‘Jamai Raja’, failed miserably. Her vamp-ish mother-in-law act was a box office disaster. Similarly, when Sridevi tried to break free from her goody-two-shoes roles in ‘Laadla’ as the headstrong boss, she garnered a lot of criticism for it. Even though many actors have becomes superstars post a stint as negative heroes. Shah Rukh Khan being a fine example. But how many of you would watch him turn pull a ‘Baazigar’ now? Isn’t it star status overpowering the actor in him? That’s exactly why we aren’t able to accept some actors in negative roles because their star persona supersedes them. We were able to watch Sanjay Dutt as Kaancha Cheena in ‘Agneepath’, but Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘Gabbar’ act in ‘Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag’ was a BO turkey.

Being versatile is one thing, doing 180 degree spin on your image is totally another. Since every actor comes with a tag in which she is slotted, it’s necessary to play a variety of roles. But sometimes, the actor can go overboard in their choice of roles, resulting in massive failure.  There are exceptions, of course. Kajol’s negative role in ‘Gupt’ was well appreciated and put for the talented actress’ versatility and acting skills. Even Urmila Matondkae walked away with awards and praises for her bit in ‘Kaun’ and ‘Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya’. While Saif Ali Khan got a lot of flak for his shallow acting in ‘Ek Haseena Thi’. Nobody knows how the audiences are going to react to a particular actor. It’s more of trial and error than anything else…
