The festival takes place at the Naga Heritage Village, Kisama that is around 12 kilometres away from Kohima, capital city of Nagaland. The main aim behind celebrating this festival is to preserve the rich historical traditions and heritage of the state.

It is a huge tourist attraction for people all over from India that highlights the amusement and traditions. You would experience some good interaction with the tribal and local people, and know more about their cultural dance and music.

The festival is a huge Diaspora of all the tribes from Nagaland and features all types of folk dance and music during the festival. This weeklong festival brings all tourists as well as the local people together to enjoy all types of dance, fun activities, art and craft, food and many such events taking place during the festival at the venue. You will also get to see some traditional art that includes paintings, sculptures and woodcarvings. Some other activities that take place at the festival are traditional archery, tribal wrestling.

Dance is a very important part of the Naga culture among all the tribes, they have dances for almost everything right from the harvest to celebrate the happiness and much more. The site is just awesome when you watch all the sixteen tribe performing together at the amphitheatre.

After the daylong celebration, in the evening major attraction is the Hornbill Music Concert in which bands from all over the country take part and compete.

Nagaland has many numbers of tribes and has numerous celebrations almost every month, so the State government made these all tribes come together and perform and serve as the window to the world, so that people can closely know about the culture. In addition, this Hornbill festival is a tribute to the bird hornbill. It is a bird, which is looked up a lot by the Naga people for it nobility and splendour.

It is closely associated with the life and culture of the people of Nagaland.
