Bollywood has always been short of original stories and in recent times, it is all about remakes, copies and so called ‘inspirations’!

While in movies, Mahesh Bhatt is known to pick up real life incidents and weave a film around them for quick monetary profits, in TV Ekta Kapoor is known to exploit real life scenarios to the hilt after adding her own fictional twist to it.

Nowadays the country is going through some real hard times of watching the Indrani Mukherjea murder-saga unfold every few minutes by so many news channels. As such life wasn’t easy, the complicated case of Sheena Bora murder has added so much torture in everyone’s life that one can’t avoid such news and at the same time can’t even bear to watch it! One woman with so many husbands and those husbands with their ex-wives and then everyone’s accumulated off-springs with millions of rupees on stake and everything come tumbling out after three years of a murder! Can even a Sherlock Holmes or a Byomkesh Bakshi ever think of solving this jigsaw puzzle? For them this might be the challenge of their career!

Anyways, coming back to our own Bollywood, both Mr. Bhatt and Ms. Kapoor must be having their minds working overtime! Both of them must be wondering how soon they can lay their hands on murky intricate secretive details to write a script on. Money to produce such a movie is of course not a problem for them and both can either launch new actors or take bankable yet unemployed struggling actors (there are several of them!!!!) who would go to any lengths to grab a role in such an interesting flick! The way these two maverick film-makers work, it won’t be a surprise that they portray Indrani as the lead protagonist and show her as the do-gooder while portraying others in her life as villains! Even the murder can be turned into a hiding act only to get Sheena back after 5 years for revenge after some plastic surgery or re-incarnation born as an adult! Anything is possible!

With Indrani’s husband Peter Mukherjea’s background as ex-head of Star Plus channel, may be this could be a years-long TV show or a movie specifically made for the loyal audience of the channel. Lots of family drama intertwined with murder and suspense! What else do our innocent house-wives across the country want to idle their time away? Or when they want revenge on their husbands for forgetting to bring the right size of onions, they can torture them by making them watch this movie or show!

You see, Mr. Mahesh Bhatt and Ms. Kapoor already know that this is a money spinner and by now their respective teams must be brain-storming also to bring this idea into reality. The question is who will succeed?

My one-paisa worth of suggestion: join hands and bring it out together!

This way at least we will be spared of watching the same drama from two different filmmakers trying to shove their opinions and point of views down our throat to earn money in the name of entertainment!

A good story always makes a good film!

To find a good story, that’s where the real talent lies.

Most of the story writers, directors etc. are always in search of a story that will connect with the masses, that has an entertainment quotient that will get bring audiences to the theaters and what not. I said ‘most’ because some of them only rely on the star power, discarding the whole concept of a script in a movie and you all know who we are talking about.

For those who really like a film with a strong content will acknowledge the fact that all great films ever made have had some personal touch to them, be it from the director’s side or the writer’s side. Of course, the personal experiences when interwoven with an interesting story will lead to an entertaining watch.

And the master of such stories which are more or less autobiographical is none other than Mahesh Bhatt!

He is one director who has had a totally screwed–up life while growing up and even during his youth, but he didn’t get depressed because of it. In fact, he is so smart that he exploited his own miseries, his own painful life to make profits out of it. Not only money, but an immense amount of critical acclaim fell in his lap. No doubt, he told those stories very artistically and keeping in mind the cinematic medium, but still it requires guts to remove your masks and get naked to reveal your true life for audience’s voyeuristic tastes!

He started with Arth which showcased his real life’s romantic liaisons and then upped the ante with Zakhm! Zakhm was based on the extra-marital affairs of his dad with his mom and can be said to be one of the boldest movies to have ever been made. Not only is it a classic, it is also responsible for giving Indian cinema the intense actor, Ajay Devgn. Before this movie, Ajay was only known as an action hero with no substantial movies in his kitty. This flick just made him a thinking intense actor who can just work wonders with his drooping eyes! All credit goes to Mahesh Bhatt!

And he is back again! Another movie based on the romance of his dad, mom and step-mom, is soon going to be released and will have Emraan Hashmi along with Vidya Balan in the main leads. Aptly titled, Humaari Adhuri Kahaani will be an emotional saga of love told from a son’s point of view!

This is definitely bold in a country where we still think of parents as equivalent to God instead of just human beings with their intrinsic strengths and weaknesses!

The first still of the movie is out and it will release on June 12^th and definitely promises to be a must watch given the talented actors and the fact that Mahesh Bhatt himself has written the film. Interesting fact is that one of his nephews, Emraan is starring in the movie while it is directed by another of his nephew, Mohit Suri!

In the 100years history of Hindi cinema, thousands of movies have been made.

Most of them were crap, but some are the true jewels which we need to preserve and share with our coming generations.

However, with changing lifestyles and modes of entertainment, some of those movies might look out of place for the today’s youth. Such movies might be considered slow or outdated as far as production quality or fashion sense is concerned, even if the content would be still relatable. In such a scenario, how do you bring such gems to the common man, to the youth of today? How can one make it exciting for the Gen-X’s consumption?

The answer is simple!

Turn the movie into a TV show, well more specifically a fictional daily show and ta da!

The whole family will watch it with great interest without even realising that it is old wine served in new bottle!

This is what has been happening for many years in the TV industry where main plots of famous cult movies are being lifted, adapted, twisted and then served to the audience. Many a times it works, many times it falls flat on the face. It all depends on how the subject is handled, how much tampering is done with the main plot and how is it being presented.

In coming days, you will be able to see shows based on two cult movies.

One is Mahesh Bhatt-directed Daddy and another is Raj Kapoor-directed, Prem Rog!

While Daddy was an emotional story poignantly showcasing a father-daughter relationship, Prem Rog was considered to be centuries ahead of its time for dealing with a hugely taboo subject of its times, widow-remarriage! Even today, widow remarriage isn’t that common as it is supposed to be, especially in small towns and villages of the country; hence the need for such subjects to be discussed and debated increased manifolds.

Daddy had superlative performances by Anupam Kher and even by a non-actress Pooja Bhatt, simply for the fact that the story of the movie was so touching. Prem Rog had a young lover boy Rishi Kapoor romancing the sweet and innocent Padmini Kolhapure, both trying to send out a loud social message via their cute romance.

Recreating such magic on TV might be difficult since the shows tend to involve lots of twists and they go on and on and on forever, but still, if such subjects are treated sensibly and sensitively, they do hold lot of promise to be able to engage the audience. Balancing the entertainment quotient along with social message might sound a difficult task, but not impossible.

Let’s hope the makers do a great job of bringing these classics back in our life!
