Writers feel and writers write!

When you read a book by Chetan Bhagat, you don’t feel like what is written above. The reason I straight away wrote the most important point is, I don’t want to leave the readers of this honest post waiting to read the important points in the middle of this article.

Youngsters, if they want to read a book, have a lot of choice nowadays. They are exposed to an array of books and authors that might interest them. I certainly wanted to use the word ‘overexposed’ because it is the truth. Nowadays you see youngsters reading books at bus stands, railway stations, coffee shops, in colleges and in schools, but the most important question which arises out of such a thing is, are they feeling whatever they are reading?

There is a big difference between a writer and a great writer. I want the readers of this article to know that difference, so that pretentious writers feel the shame which is being bestowed upon them.

I will let you know a thing which I thought and felt while reading Chetan Bhagat. While I was reading one of his books, I felt that the story was being fed into my head, someone was telling me and I was listening. There was no scope for my thoughts to reply to whatever that was written in the book. There was an explanation to everything that was happening which I felt was very unnecessary.

The characters that are often shown in his stories are just being used by him so that they take the story forward till the climax and the book meets an end. The women characters in his books are nothing much than a portrayal of fake womanhood and reminds me of the sleazy content that was made famous by pulp fiction writers like Ved Prakash Sharma and Surendra Mohan Pathak. Bhagat fans! the women in his books do not fight for sexual freedom, they become the prisoners of sex. The truth is destroyed and the lies are sugar coated. All of these things sum up to the concept of literature blasphemy and the shameful irony is that nowadays this is the formula for a successful book. The writers are not the only ones to be blamed, the readers should also be blamed.

The above paragraph exposes the not so enduring writing style of Chetan Bhagat. Let us now talk about a writer which is almost forgotten by the people, people do not read him but they are not aware that whatever books they are reading(I am talking about the books by coming off age writers) has a little bit of him in them, ‘Saadat Hasan Manto’.
Every sentence ever written by him still strikes the readers with a sword of epiphany.  Saadat Hasan Manto wrote the truth and served it hot and cold at the same time. His works reveal his personality, they reveal that Manto was a theist and an atheist at the same time. Sane, insane were not just words for him, they were experiences. One can easily call him the Edgar Allan Poe of the Urdu world

Manto in his books did not answered questions, he asked them and asked them with utmost clarity. The clarity which no writer has achieved ever since. Your thoughts are given the permission to express themselves and you are the one who has to answer the questions. His writings can be understood by kids and the older masses and this proves that he has an universal appeal. The women in his stories gradually become the most important part of the stories. Even if there was no woman involved in the story, Manto tried to make the whole story a woman and succeeded in doing that. A quality which is not found nowadays. Inspired by the works of Maxim Gorky and Guy de Maupassant, Manto was arguably the greatest Urdu writer of his time.

If one wants to be a writer, he/she should be very careful with what he reads because if you want to write good you should read good.

Why everybody wants to be a Bhagat and not a Manto?

LOVE – a four letter word that actually makes the world function!

It is also the same word that keeps everyone on their toes, gives them goose bumps, butterflies in the stomach, makes them jump with joy, make everyone go crazy and makes life tad more interesting than it is!

With the passage of time, especially in India with liberals allowing and accepting that love is a way of life, everyone has joined the bandwagon of getting into a relationship.

By the time one turns into an adult, they have had at least one relationship to boast of.

And mind you, they are past their serious love affair and have come out mature to face the world, so they say!

Is it a reality though?

Actually, far from it! If you look closely, love is more of a fad these days, just to show off the way one shows off their latest gadget or party scene or dresses etc. The urge to be counted amongst those who have a boyfriend/girlfriend and to be able to boast that one is in love is much stronger than actually feeling the urge to love and be loved!

Now this is not a lecture about morals and ethics and what one should or shouldn’t do, but just trying to decipher what actually goes in today’s generation’s mind when they talk about love. Seriously speaking, most have watched rom-com cinema of Hollywood and it’s desi adaptation, read all of Chetan Bhagat’s candy floss surface level love stories and followed the lovey-dovey posts of couples on social media like Facebook, Twitter etc. and now want to emulate all of that in their life as well. Nothing bad in that if one can derive some pleasure by such activities, but it actually doesn’t help in the long term!

The reason why one gets in and out of love within a matter of days and love-marriages are heading for divorce so very often is that one associates the feeling of being in love with actually being in love! It is not easy to differentiate for most people and therefore they become super happy with the fact that they are in love rather than actually digesting the feeling of love, which comes with its own share of pain, longing, adjustments, compromises, sacrifices and what not! All one wants in love-life is to be happy, to be able to party, to spend time together doing fun things and be able to boast about it in their social circle. Love is much more than this and beyond all this!

Another way of looking at it is if someone doesn’t even realize the difference and yet is immensely happy, then no point in bursting the bubble! At least something is making the person happy, even if on a surface level, temporarily given the fact that otherwise life is full of stress and complications. As they say, ignorance is sometimes really bliss!

Well, whether you are in love or with the feeling of being in love, as long as you are happy and not hurting anyone, carry on! However, once in your lifetime, try to find the difference and actually try to live the experience of being really in deep true love. Your life will change and it will become more meaningless!

Even if we don’t find any life there, we can export our hugely dumb yet somehow popular celebs so that beloved Earth becomes a better place to be!

1) Kamaal R Khan

This fellow has been born with some special characteristics, which give him the license to top any and every list ever made in the country about such irritating celebs! Whether it is his controversial tweets targeting actresses and renowned film-makers or his movie reviews or his worse-than-poison acting in movies, KRK is slowly crossing all limits. If he is not exported, let’s export rest of the population!

2) Karishma Tanna

Okay we get it girl! You’re in love with Upen Patel and you ditched your ex publicly on the nation’s biggest reality show, Bigg Boss, but for how long you going to go on and on about it? It’s like you open the newspapers and it is all about them; their rehearsals for Nach Baliye, getting star treatment on the sets, how they complement each other etc. Enough of this boring love-story! Send them off to Mars so they can populate the dead planet with their love!

3) Anu Malik

Whether as a singer or as a judge or as a guest on some other reality show, Anu Malik tests the collective patience of an entire nation! May be the channels who invite him to be part of the shows want to see how far they can go before the thin line between entertainment and nuisance can be blurred! Anu Malik isn’t actively producing music these days; how about sending him to Mars and ask him to create music for rocks there? Music gives life you know; who knows Anu brings the planet to life!

4) Chetan Bhagat

Even as most of the literates were trying to come out of the coma induced after reading his books, he hits us again with his judgments on a dance reality show! Talking about being fake or not doing what one’s heart says, he is now really getting on our nerves! Yes, we badly wanted him to stop writing books, but never thought he will devise a novel way to torture us! Please send him to Mars immediately to avoid mass suicides on Earth!

5) Arnab Goswami

Let me quickly finish saying what I have to say before Mr. Non-stop-talking-and-even-interrupting-machine takes over! This guy is cracking our heads for almost 5-6years now with no respite in sight! The only benefit of his screaming and shouting are felt by hearing aid companies whose business has soared thanks to ear drums getting exploded while watching Newshour Live with Arnab! Let him carry out some explosions on Mars to see what lies beneath the red planet! Send him now, please please please!!!!

These are just a few of torturing souls, but even if at least these are sent, we can live a few more years, peacefully!

Two mega successful writers!

Both catering to the youth of the country!

Yet, they are as different as chalk and cheese!

Yes, the older generation model turned writer Shobhaa De belonging to the feminist brigade and the young engineer turned writer Chetan Bhagat trying to cater to the masses are massively huge in their respective field, but the different sexes also differ in their thought processes!

What is similar between them?

Firstly, both write in English. Secondly, both have written books and continue to write articles, blogs, columns for top-notch publications of the country including The Times Of India, Asian Age, Dainik Bhaskar etc. Thirdly, both are related to films and TV as Shobha is responsible for writing Hindi TV’s second daily soap, Swabhimaan way back in 1990’s. On the other hand Chetan has become a film writer as well with Kai Po Che and Kick. Sorry to say, but the similarities end there!

How are they different?

Well, a 1000 page novel might not be enough to describe their differences! While Ms. De is all about feminism and talking about the upper society, Chetan is catering to the lowest common denominator of the society. While Shobha might cringe at the thought of someone talking in simple English, Chetan makes a poor English reader feel like he is reading no less than a Shakespeare! Being a woman, Shobhaa has explored sexuality in her books and articles to varying degrees, but always pushed the envelope. However, Chetan’s books don’t touch sex the way it needs to be for being a blockbuster. Just a bit of kissing and an indication of sex is enough for his books to go on and become bestsellers!

It was an era when filmy gossip ruled the roost and Shobhaa en-cashed on it to build her career carrying on even today to mint millions out of satisfying the common man’s urge to know what happens in a film star’s life! In a way she is offering exotic cappuccinos in expensive cups to her readers and only those who can afford it, are reading her. Chetan is on the other hand offering local cutting chai packaged in equally expensive cups so that his readers feel privileged as well, everyone believing that they can afford it and actually deserve it!

That could be one reason his earnings are so phenomenal and is easily being touted as the most successful novelist India has ever produced and that too in just a decade!

Ideally men and women can’t be compared and same goes true for writers as well, but given the fact that both these stalwarts of literary world are more or less catering to the same target segment, a comparison becomes necessary!

Let’s see what’s next for these two! Would they join hands to create something magical or walk their own paths? Either of them up for Rajya Sabha membership probably? Huh?

We love reality shows!

Whether it is the baap of all, Bigg Boss or the routine song and dance reality shows which give a platform to the immense talent in our country from kids to adults, from girls to women, from singles to couples, as an audience we love watching them month after month, season after season.

No doubt, these shows are a welcome break from the teary soaps ruling the roost and help a complete family to spend evenings together, not to mention inspiring the coming generation to have new dreams and believe in them.

Given such a huge potential which these reality shows carry within, it becomes their responsibility as well to make sure that a right kind of message goes out to the audience. Right from the contestants’ selection, the production value, the honesty of the competition to the fair and transparent judgment of the acts, it is absolutely necessary that the highest possible standards are maintained.

That is why it is shocking to know that Nach Baliye, a dance reality show produced by Ekta Kapoor for Star Plus, is in talks with Chetan Bhagat to be one of the judges! There is no doubt about the calibre of Chetan as a writer, but to think of him as a dance show judge? That’s actually crazy!! As a celebrity he can definitely attract eyeballs given his massive fan following, but is he trained and skilled enough to judge professional dancers? There have been host of celebrity judges on various shows, but they have all been either masters of their craft or they have judged shows which required objective opinions about the acts. For example, if Kirron Kher judged India’s Got Talent, it was not about any one particular talent, but talent in general based on certain pre-decided benchmarks and parameters.

Similarly, if Shilpa Shetty or Madhuri Dixit is made to judge a dance show, they are definitely qualified to do that given their long history of being associated with the art form and having proven their mettle.

What does Chetan Bhagat have to do with dancing except sitting on the fence and just passing remarks?

This is actually commercialization of a franchise without applying mind to it. Yes, TV shows are made to entertain and earn money as well, but then don’t lower the standards to earn a quick buck! The contestants may not be hard-core professionals and their career also may not be in the line of fire based on their performances in the show, but what kind of a message will the show give out?

The youth that watches such shows need to hear an expert comment on dance performance instead of some writer’s views who might just judge the act on his vague opinion!

Really hope that better sense prevails and the production house along with the channel finalize an expert celebrity rather than just a celebrity!
