Gurgaon residents lukewarm to registering as voters

Residents of Gurgaon, which lags in registration of voters with a population-voter ratio of 436 per thousand as against 554 for Haryana, are lukewarm towards an ongoing special supplementary revision of voters list, an official said Monday.

Till now only about 22,000 have applied for registration as new voters in all the four assembly segments of the district though the number of new voters is projected to be 310,000, the official said. The exercise is slated to go on till Oct 25.

According to the figures from the district election office, the projected population of all the four assembly segments in the district by January 2014 will be around 2,044,912 while the number of voters, as on Sep 6, 2013, were 891,165.

Going by the population-voter ratio of the state, the number of applications by new voters only works out to 15 percent of the total.

In the Gurgaon assembly seat, the projected population is 564,886 while the number of voters is 259,848. Going by the population-voter ratio of 460 per thousand, the number of new voters comes to 68,885 but only 5,761 applications for registration of new voters have been received.

In Badshahpur, the projected population is 670,076 and the number of existing voters is 278,763. The ratio is 416, indicating 66,167 new voters but only 6,322 people have applied.

The projected population in Pataudi assembly segment is 382,343 while the number of voters is 180,662. The population-voter ratio is 473, so 89,196 new voters have to be registered but till now, only 5,168 applications were received.

In Sohna assembly, the projected population is 427,607 and the number of voters is 171,692. The population-voter ratio is 402, so new voters should be 86,636 but only 4,881 applications have been received.
