The saddest part is that the World Player of the Year – Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal crashed out despite a 2-1 win over Ghana. Here’s how the action unfolded in the Group G and H respectively:

Group G:
Germany vs. USA

Winner – Germany
Bayern Munich striker Thomas Mueller scored his fourth goal of the World Cup on Friday as Germany defeated the United States 1-0 to win Group G ahead of the Americans, who also advanced to the knockout stage of the World Cup despite losing. With two wins and a draw, Germany topped the group with seven points, while the US progressed with four.

Portugal vs. Ghana

Winner – Portugal
Cristiano Ronaldo’s first goal of the World Cup earned Portugal a 2-1 win over Ghana but couldn’t prevent his team being eliminated from the tournament along with the Africans on Thursday. Portugal finished level on four points with second-place United States in Group G but with an inferior goal difference. Despite the victory, Ronaldo won’t be joining the likes of Leo Messi and Neymar in the next round.

Group H:
Belgium vs. South Korea

Winner – Belgium
A 10-man Belgium was still able to beat South Korea 1-0 on Thursday as the former finished atop of Group H and eliminate the last Asian team from the World Cup. With a late goal yet again, Belgium made the difference in the 78th minute when defender Jan Vertonghen followed up a shot from teenage striker Divock Origi and tapped in the rebound past goalkeeper the South Korean goalkeeper.

lgeria vs. Russia

Winner – Algeria through despite the draw

Algeria have qualified for the World Cup knockout stages for the first time, with Islam Slimani’s headed equaliser giving his team a 1-1 draw against Russia on Thursday and enough competition points to reach the second round.
