Why Your Efficiency At Work Counts More Than Your Non Productive Facetime

In an era when all the information we get and share is over the internet via email, social media and other communication, employers focus on face time more than your productivity.

Agreed that being present physically at work is as important a part of the job, as having the job is, but if you’re efficient enough to finish off given tasks in hand within a lesser period of time than expected, sitting back at work and killing time is no use.

And a number of employers agree to the fact that cutting short an employee’s non productive facetime increases the employee’s efficiency and job satisfaction.

There are a number of workplace rules, which they say is apllied to increase your efficiency. But what good are those rules when long working hours do nothing more than decreasing it. Overexertion leads to stress and hence decreases your productivity.

Rather than following what’s been going on since a long time, employers and their HR departments need to address the issue appropriately and strive to create a workforce that values efficiency and productivity over face time. Here are a few ways which could help.

Know what the situation demands: There are times when you need to be at your workplace irrespective of the fact whether you’re getting output for your work or not. In that case the manager should realize that the employee has been working beyond his normal timings and could be given some leverage on the timing the following day. After all a widespread unrecognized work is a warning sign that a workplace is out of balance.

– Take interest in employee’s worklife: Managers should be encouraged to take interest in the personal/professional life balance of their employees. If a manager is all about making his employees put in as many hours at work as possible, employees might just start losing their interest in work. And the manager and employee both know, that, is going to do no good to the organization.

Proper equipping ofthe workplace: When I say proper equipping of the workplace I don’t mean just the toolbox and first aid kit. Workplaces need to be equipped with things that enhance skills and focus to manage the employees’ workload effectively.

Just like there are times when you think you can’t do better than you’re already doing, there are times when an employee who is done for the day, can’t do better even if you make him or her sit for long. It is high time, employers realize that.
