Gulaab Gang: A Real Life Documentary Or An Over The Top Film?

The official trailer of Gulaab Gang, starring the two powerhouse performers Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla, is out. I saw the promo and was pretty impressed with the efforts Anubhav Sinha and Soumik Sen have taken to portray a real life story on celluloid. But that feeling of pride was momentary. I recently got the chance to lay my hands on this documentary of Sampat Pal, the leader of the real Gulabi Gang based in Uttar Pradesh. The pink saree clad ladies in the film are rural women who have gone against the norms to be a part of a crusade that was started for the greater good. And all of a sudden the Madhuri Dixit starrer looked like a substandard imitation of these activists’ real lives.

The over the top dialogues, the song and dance sequences, the shoddy filmi antics – it’s like making a mockery of the battle those village women are fighting with all their might.

No, this can’t be a tribute; it’s a money-making commercial venture and Juhi and Madhuri are nothing but cash cows. Not a hint of realism in the movie, I wonder what the filmmakers are trying to do by making Madhuri Dixit jump in the air and ramble abysmal lines like ‘Rod is God’, with jarring music in the background-  which is perhaps played to instill inspiration in the viewers but all it does is make you feel nauseous.
