Are you thrown back by this headline? Well, don’t be. In a day and age where everything sells, wearing appropriate clothes seems to be a rare sight. We tell you how you can dress modestly to work, formal occasions and other events. Read on:

No low-cuts, please:
The basic rule of ‘dressing modestly’ is to avoid low-cut dresses and tops with a plunging necklines. If you’re at a position of authority, you have to make sure that your peers and employees take you seriously. For that, you need to dress appropriately. Although nobody should ever judge you for what you wear, that’s not how the society works. Sad, but the truth.

Cleavage popping:
If you’re going to a conservative place, it’s advisable to avoid cleavage-popping shirts, tops and gowns. You can wear an inner lining if you feel that your innerwear will pop out of your outfit. You can also opt for button-up tops and dresses that do not show off your cleavage, but the buttons can be undone when you want to go partying or to a more informal affair. These dual purpose outfits are very popular with working women!

Avoid sheer:
This is a look that doesn’t suit everybody, perhaps one of the toughest to pull off. More so, if you don’t have a great body. If you are going to a place of worship or for a meeting, avoid sheers and opt for solid prints and fabrics that will not let your innerwear poke out. If you must wear the ‘in’ fabric of 2014, go for semi-sheers or faux sheers where your inners are not exposed.

Length-wise:
Whether it’s a pair of skirt or shorts, the length matters. For formal events, keep the skirt longer so it falls just below your knees. Avoid shorts and opt for Capri pants instead. And if the event calls for modest dressing, go for cropped pants that are stylish, yet fully covered. If you’re a working woman, go for skirts with hems so you can tuck them in and out, according to the occasion.

Sometimes, it’s better to dress according to the place so people remember you for all the right reasons. Girls have it tough because they have to constantly please everybody and avoid being judged for their clothes. We do hope that this mindset will change, because what one wishes to wear should not be determined by someone else.
