US Open ‘“ Day 2 Preview

Serena & Venus Williams, Na Li, Radwanska, Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer are all through to second round at the US Open.

After a day of expected results on Day 1, here’s a preview on what’s in store on Day 2 at Flushing Meadows. Serena & Venus Williams, Na Li, Radwanska, Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer are all through to second round at the US Open. Serena demolished Schiavone 6-0 6-1 while as expected the match between Ivan Dodig and Fernando Verdasco was a tough one, Dodig prevailed over Verdasco in 5 set marathon. Roger Federer’s match was cancelled on Day 1 due to rain and will take place later today.

Mens Singles

Now on Day 2, besides Federer, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic will also take the court in the first match of the night session at the Arthur Ashe stadium. Djokovic will face Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania. Roger Federer will face Grega Zemlja of Slovakia. In other matches, No. 10 seed Milos Raonic of Canada will face Thomas Fabbiano of Italy in the first match of the day at the Louis Armstrong stadium. This is the first time both will face each other, but Raonic should’nt find any difficulties in beating the unseeded Italian. American John Isner will take on Filippo Volandri of Italy in the first round as well. This is again a first time meeting of the two tennis players and one would expect Isner to go through to the next round.

No. 5 seed Czech Thomas Berdych will face Paolo Lorenzi of Italy. Berdych reached the semi finals of the US Open last year and should not face any issues in going through. Sam Querry of USA, Gael Monfils of France and Tommy Haas of Germany are also scheduled to take court today. Wimbledon semi finalist Jerzy Janowicz will play his first round match today as well.

Women’s Singles

In the women’s singles, No. 2 seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus will face Dinah Pfizenmaier of Germany in round one. Azarenka will be looking to not just beat the German but beat her comprehensively to be on par with Serena’s demolishing win over Schiavone on Day 1. No. 7 Petra Kvitova will take on Misaki Doi of Japan in the opening match on the Arthur Ashe stadium later today. Kvitova beat Misaki earlier this year in a WTA tour event in Poland. Former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki would face Ying-Ying Duan of China. Another first meeting between the two, but Wozniacki should sail past the Chinese player.

In other matches, No. 4 seed Italian Sara Errani will battle Olivia Rogowska of Australia. 2011 US Open champion Samantha Stosur will face American Victoria Duval. Stosur hasn’t had a good 2013 so far and will be looking to perform well at the US Open. Ana Ivanovic, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Roberta Vinci are also scheduled to play their first round matches later today.

Doubles draws are out!

The draws for the men’s and women’s doubles event at the US Open were disclosed on Monday. Italians Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci are the top seeds in women’s doubles while the American duo of the Bob and Mike Bryan are the top seeds in the men’s singles. Bryan brothers are looking to win an unprecedented fifth US Open doubles title.
There are four Indians in the men’s doubles event, Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan. The pair of Rohan Bopanna and Edouard Roger-Vasselin has been seeded sixth while the pair of Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek has been seeded fourth in the men’s doubles event. Divij Sharan will partner Yen-Hsun Lu while Mahesh Bhupathi will partner Phillip Petzschner. Both pairs are unseeded for the event. This will be Bhupathi’s last outing at the US Open. Bhupathi will retire from professional tennis at the end of the year.
In women’s doubles, Sania Mirza is the sole representative from India. She will partner Jie Zheng of China. The Indo-China pair has been seeded tenth for the doubles event. None of the Indian stars are scheduled to play today.
