There are many such Multi lingual countries, so India has fair competition from other countries when it comes to multilingualism. Even if not multilingual, at least trilingual. Being a multilingual nation, many people have to be able to converse in at least 5 languages.

Also, there is sometimes rich colonial history at play behind this multilingual setting. Besides, there are strong regional loyalties and unavoidable cultural influence by the powerful country nearby.

So, here are the names of the Multi lingual countries that speak more than 5 languages:

1. Aruba:

In the Southern Caribbean, this country is located which is near Venezuela. Dutch is the official language here are taught in schools too. Both English and Spanish are included in Aruba’s education system. English is taught because their economy partially depends on tourism. The native language of Aruba and Papiamento are the languages spoken aside from Portugese, Spanish, Dutch and English.

2. Luxembourg:

This nation’s people are fluent in more than four languages. The locals speak with each other in Luxembourgish which is close to German but this language is enriched with French loan words.

The education system stresses on both German and French but most official businesses are conducted in French.

3. Singapore:

People of Singapore speak four official languages which are Mandarin, Chinese, Malay and Tamil. This city state is diverse from every which angle, mostly ethnically. Whilst English is stressed upon for Singapore being one of the most visited tourism destination. There are two other languages such as Hokkien and Hakka.

4. Malaysia:

Malaysia is more multilingual than the neighbouring Singapore because the basic mother tongue is Malay while rest of the people are fluent in English. There is another language that is spoken on the streets called Manglish which is a mixed one between Malay and English. There are Chinese and Mandarin taught in Malaysia, Penang and Johor Bahru.

5. South Africa:

South Africa boasts of at least 11 types of language and its speakers. The lingua franca in most of the urban areas throughout the country is English and there are other languages such as Afrikaans, Germanic tongue that can be likened to Dutch. There are other nine official languages such as Xulu and Xhosa, one that Nelson Mandela used to speak.

6. Mauritius:

This island nation located in the Indian Ocean is known as the part of Africa. Mauritians speak languages like English and French fairly fluently but the street language is Mauritian Creole. Surprisingly, some Indian descent among the Mauritians speak Indian language Bhojpuri too. So, apparently Mauritians speak three languages.

These are Multi lingual countries – So, dear fellow Indians, sorry for breaking your bubble, oops!

He is making his debut as a test-captain on the Indian soil and it is not going to be an easy beginning. He doesn’t need to prove his credential to anyone what with coming from behind and snatching victory in Sri Lanka and showcasing his master skills.

However, in India it is going to be different and that too against South Africa, a team that is in its full elements!

There was a time when India was really strong in its own backyard at least, with players like Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, VVS Lakshman, Anil Kumble and Virender Sehwag ruling the roost and ensuring that no one was able to defeat us in India.

Things have changed now. The senior most player of the current lot, M.S.Dhoni, like others, has also retired from the longer format of the game and there is no one experienced enough in the time to guide the younger lot. Virat knows it very well that he will have to lead from the front and that’s where his challenge lies. Openers like Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, and Cheteshwar Pujara are still not settled and despite being powerhouse of talent, each one of them is still miles away from being consistent in their performances.

On their good day, they can beat the best teams of the world single-handedly, but that one “good day” comes rarely!

On top of it, our bowling unit is still not fully functional. Either our pacers are going after pace or trying to maintain right line and length. Either they try to stop runs or they try to take wickets. There is no perfect balance and no leading senior bowler, who can really come forward, take the onus of producing results and inspire juniors in the team!

In this backdrop, the test series with South Africa looks really difficult and very challenging as the visitors are very well settled and having enormous talent amidst their ranks to create chaos for us. While Indian team is still looking to find the right combination of batsmen as well as bowlers, the visitors are looking sure of their strategy on how to contain India and give us a knocking punch!

Virat knows it all, but the question is whether he is ready to take the bull by its horns or are we going to just see a lot of experimentation without productive results?

Let’s hope our youngsters come out all guns blazing and prove their mettle! When fighting against the best, one’s best comes out!

Here’s hoping that Virat is able to bring out not only his, but his teammates’ best as well and come out victorious!

Good luck boys!

Apart from that, the records being broken, the sweet victory on Sri Lankan soil after 22 years is all going to be a part of cherished memories for years to come. It is not every day that a team full of such youngsters and players who are in and out of the team come together as a unit and give a stunning performance like this.

What exactly happened here? What changed?

There will be a detailed analysis obviously and the team management is going to find out what actually worked so that the same formula can be repeated in future as well. Next test match series is with South Africa and that will be the real challenge. But let’s first focus on how things have worked out at the moment and have that somehow made M S Dhoni irrelevant to the team?

First of all, it is all about Virat Kohli’s persona, charisma and the aggressiveness that has rubbed on his team members. Most of them are around his age and somehow can relate to his body language as well as mental attitude. The hunger for winning a match has somehow been clearly visible. Instead of being passive and trying to avoid losing a match, the players seemed in a mindset to go out and conquer the world! The fear of losing is out and passion for winning is in! Whether it is Ishant Sharma who bowled his heart out or Amit Mishra’s come back with such a beautiful spell or Ashwin’s phenomenal performance, the credit goes to them as much as to their captain Kohli who has been able to support them and give them the freedom to give their best.

With Dhoni, the team looked jaded, tired and in a reclusive mode even before the match started. It used to look as if they were touring to draw the series or to save their face, instead of showing the mindset to win. Also, Dhoni’s tactics in a test-match usually looked defensive instead of attacking or aggressive, the way he acts in a one-day match or T20!

It is just one series and the jury is still out whether the same set of boys can repeat this feat against stronger and tougher teams like South Africa, England and Australia, but the change is in the air. Dhoni is definitely an amazing captain and player in one-dayers, but the kind of change Virat is bringing in, would it be possible for the boys to perform under two different captains in two different formats of the game? Would they be able to give their best in one-days the way they performed in test matches? How would the team composition change under different captains?

All these questions will pose a challenge for Indian cricket per se and it would be interesting to see how Dhoni copes up with the changed dressing room! We still need Dhoni, but going by the trends, soon he may not be missed much!

Better days are ahead, for sure!

The first semi-final match will be played between South Africa and New Zealand at Auckland

All the cricketing nations would be watching this match closely (especially India and Australia) to know which team would make its debut as the finalist.

Yes, neither South Africa nor New Zealand has ever reached the final of a cricket World Cup before.

Where New Zealand has successfully maintained the unbeaten record in this tournament, South Africa made their way into the semi-final for the first time ever.

Though New Zealand appear as the clear favourites, South Africa would try their level best to not ‘choke’ under what appears to be a pressure situation for them.

Team Form

The Proteas faced Sri Lanka in their quarter-final match eventually gaining a comfortable win as their bowlers bowled out the Asian team for a measly 133. The Africans won that match big with not only 9 wickets to spare, but also 18 overs.

South Africa beat Sri Lanka by 9 wickets in the quarter-final

The Black Caps, on the other hand, dominated the West Indies. It is officially time for the likes of Brendon McCullum and Trent Boult to step aside and pave way for Martin Guptill, who the highest score by a New Zealander ever (237*) against their opponents to set them a target of 393.

Trent Boult has performed consistently in this edition of the World Cup

The Players

South Africa’s bowling seemed to have been enjoying the party from the back till the Pool games, but it really came to the party against Sri Lanka in the quarter-finals. The spinners decimated the Sri Lankan batting line-up with Imran Tahir claiming four-for and JP Duminy claiming his hat-trick and ending up with the figures of 3-29.

JP Duminy’s hat-trick proved fatal in Sri Lanka’s defeat in the quarter-final

New Zealand, on the other hand, has been in spectacular form, with the bat and the ball. Though initially Brendon McCullum took charge in regards with scoring runs, the last two matches have seen Martin Guptill step up to the occasion scoring a century and a double-century, respectively. Even Trent Boult and Tim Southee have troubled the batsmen with their in-wing and out-swinging deliveries.

Martin Guptill will have to play a big innings to ensure New Zealand’s win

Face-to-Face

In the World Cups, the two teams have faced each other on six occasions. New Zealand holds an edge over its opponents with four wins as compared to South Africa’s two. The Proteas would definitely want to get the win tomorrow and enter the finals for the first time.

New Zealand are 4-2 ahead against South Africa in World Cups

Prediction

We hope the match to go till the last over, making the bout a lot more interesting than it already is. Both teams have never reached World Cup finals before which would only elevate their hunger to outdo their opponent.

Looking at the line-up, the form and history concerning both teams, New Zealand should enter the finals.

Where West Indies convincingly beat UAE, Pakistan took their own time to strike the final blow against Ireland.

Though it was an easy win for West Indies, they had to chase whatever the target set inside 36 overs. They managed to do that in the 31st over after losing 4 wickets.

Jason Holder, the West Indies captain, was extremely pleased with the result and must have revelled in his own individual performance of 4 for 27.

West Indies captain Jason Holder celebrates a wicket

“We needed to win by a certain margin. We had to show positive intent. We knew we had to finish the game inside 36 overs and we did it”, is what he said during the post-match presentation ceremony.

The final Pool match between Pakistan and Ireland saw Pakistani wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed become the first man since 2007 World Cup to score a century for his team in this major tournament.

Sarfraz Ahmed scored an unbeaten century against Ireland

The conclusion of yesterday’s matches meant that the World Cup has its eight quarter-finalist teams – South Africa, Sri Lanka, India, New Zealand, Australia, Bangladesh, Pakistan and West Indies – that will compete against one another for the coveted prize.

The first quarter-final match will be played on 18th March between Sri Lanka and South Africa. Defending champions India will take on their Asian adversary Bangladesh on the 19th in Melbourne. Australia, the four-time former World Cup champion, will face Pakistan on March 20. The quarter-finals will end with co-host New Zealand taking on West Indies on the 21st of March in Wellington.

Where the post-match programme Cricket Live yesterday saw the cricket legends predicting winners of the quarter-finals as South Africa, India, Australia and New Zealand, it will only be on the match day when we get to witness as to which teams handle the pressure better.

In case any of the quarter-final / semi-final matches gets abandoned or tied, the team that finished in a higher position than their opponent would move on to the next stage of the competition.

After a thumping victory against Pakistan, Team India’s spirits are definitely high up on cloud number 9 but it’s time to settle down and reflect upon their performance in the match.

Rectifications in Order

India’s bowling needs to be fixed ASAP! The number of wide balls against Pakistan was evident that our bowlers, especially Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav keep losing their focus and eventually gifting valuable runs to the opposition. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar is still not in form due to his ankle injury.

In the batting department, Kohli and Dhawan need to set their head straight and practice on better co-ordination, while running between the wickets. A stupid run out will cost us dearer against a stronger team than Pakistan, the mighty South Africans!

The South African too side has various tricks up its sleeve. India would be a fool to underestimate them or to consider them easy to beat, like they beat a weaker Pakistani team with over 70 runs to spare.

The SA side has 5 such mighty juggernauts that our Indian warriors need to surpass at all costs in order to maintain their dominance in this world cup and keep their bid alive to retain their world championship.

These 5 Juggernauts Are:

Gary Kirsten:

He recently retired as chief coach of the SA team. Indian fans will remember him better as India’s erstwhile coach from 2008 to 2011. He knows every player’s strong points and weaknesses. HE led India to win the World Cup in 2011! He is keenly watching India’s practice sessions. India must put up a good fight to show the South Africans that they do have what it takes to surpass the ‘Proteas magic’.

David Miller and Hashim Amla:

These two batsmen are the most dependable players in the SA side. Their wickets need to be taken at the earliest possible opportunity to curtail SA’s scorecard.

David Miller & Hashim Amla

Dale Steyn:

He can blow your head off with his pace attack… literally! Indian batsmen need to practice really hard in order to dupe Steyn’s attack and score easy boundaries with yorkers that he so effortlessly bowls.

Dale Styen

AB de Villiers:

His name is enough! This batsman makes his earning by hitting the ball out of the stadium mercilessly. Getting him out is an uphill task but needs to be performed since he single-handedly can ruin India’s chances of winning. As we said, his name is enough!

AB de Villiers.

JP Duminy:

The all-rounder that makes India sweat! He can overturn any pressure situation and score big runs. With the ball too, he can do serious damage to our batsmen, especially our susceptible middle order which is infamous of collapsing one after the other.

JP Duminy

These are 5 tall peaks team India needs to scale in order to fly our flag high! Recently, Mike Hussey, Australian cricketer and a top quality batsman have been attending SA training sessions. India needs to beware of this tactic since Hussey is a local and knows the features of Australian pitches at the tips of his fingers.

It would be another cracking match between the two teams this Sunday, 22nd February. India will face a mighty task beating Kirsten and current SA coach Russell Domingo’s trained team.

Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius was sentenced on Tuesday to five years imprisonment for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp by a South African judge.

The case which has lasted more than a year, saw Oscar shoot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day last year, through a toilet door at the former’s home.

The Paralympian testified that the shooting was by accident as he mistook Reeva for an intruder. But the South African judge withheld Oscar’s testify and cited ‘gross negligence’ while shooting Reeva.

South African judge Thokozile Masipa also ruled the Olympian to three years in prison for criminally firing a gun in a restaurant in a separate incident weeks before Steenkamp’s 2013 shooting death though the judge ordered that sentence to be completely suspended. Judge Masipa has convicted Oscar of culpable homicide, or negligent killing, but acquitted him of murder.

Speaking to the media after the verdict was announced, Pistorius’s uncle, Arnold was quoted: “The court has now handed down judgement and sentence, and we accept the judgement,” said Arnold Pistorius in a statement outside court. “Oscar will embrace this opportunity to pay back to society. This has been an incredibly hard and painful process for everyone involved, the Ms Steenkamp family, our family and Oscar.” He further adds, “We are all emotionally drained. The case that was set down for three weeks originally has been dragged out for seven months.”

As learnt from some legal experts, Pistorius’ sentence provides that his prison term will be of maximum of five years and moreover, the runner could be qualified for house arrest after serving eight months in jail.

But there’s still lot left in the case as both prosecution and defence have the right to appeal. But the prosecution service has said to the media that it had not yet decided and the defence has not yet commented as well.
