If the phases of our lives were to be compared with the transmuting seasons, then school life can indubitably be likened with Spring for it brings along all the colours, innocence, versatility, friendship and gives happy memories for keeps. School memories are like the stone engravings because whenever we revisit them they are as dominant and vivid as it comes.

It’s like the potter shaping tender clay into shape, our teachers outline our thoughts, help us strengthen our sense of logic, restore our faith on god, teach us family values and amass into us all the etiquette that the future life calls for.

Since in school we are taught things with textbook examples and we are supposed to memorize them in a given time, those teachings are frozen in our minds forever and violating them is something we can scarcely think of.

The most important thing our schools have taught us was to respect the teachers. We show gratitude to the teachers by standing up on their arrival or greeting them according to the part of the day.

People who studied in convent schools know how they were introduced to spirituality and made familiar with the fact that God is omnipotent. Since the Missionary schools aim to sow religious values in their students, the morning prayers were conducted with extra importance and that habit stayed with the students for long.

Then we were taught to say please, thank you and excuse me sans trepidation and ambiguity. We were taught to mean our words and not fear anyone other than god.

Loving-sharing-caring is the template teaching of all schools. We all had spent that day in school when we were asked to share our food with each other which rekindles brotherhood and antidotes hatred.

Covering our faces while sneezing and coughing to deter the dispersion of germs was another key lesson we all have learnt in our school.

We were admonished by teachers if caught chit-chatting with a friend in a running class. This is annoying for the teacher and not conductive to other students who want to concentrate too. This one etiquette that we learned at school made our lives easier at colleges and professional lives.

We were taught to share each other’s pain and help each other in difficulties. Schools taught us that everyone is not born with the same merit and that we can at least be kind to those who try hard to match steps with us.

We learned to pay the obligatory respect to people like not calling the adults by their names, answering an elderly person’s phone politely, not shouting at our parents at the top of our lungs, always knock the door before entering.

These are the strategic etiquettes we were taught at school which helped build our personality.

It is based on the same site which was a witness to 200 witch trials from the year 1692 to 1693!

3) Dongzhong Cave School in China

Your village doesn’t have enough resources to make a school? Well, find a cave nearby and start giving education! That’s what the villagers of a poor place in China did so that their children can get educated, even if in a dark and dingy cave. However, the government shut its gates in 2001!

4) River Plate School, Argentina

The students of this school have to manage their studies in a world famous soccer stadium in Buenos Aires. It is a world class stadium and home to famous soccer team Club Atletico while also holding the crown to teach as many as 2000 pupils! Imagine something like this in our own backyard in Wankhede Stadium? Or at Eden Garden?

5) School Of The Future, Philadelphia

Trust Microsoft to do everything differently and on a grand scale. This school is designed by Microsoft for the poor section of society selected through a lottery process and at a cost of $63 million since 2006 is home to so many students carving out a decent future for them. Best part: every kid is given a laptop and education is totally paperless!

6) Burgess Hill School, England

While schools are all about education, some give a different meaning to it by introducing certain aspects to it in the name of social experiment. This school in the 1960’s did exactly that by mirroring the rebellious attitude of the youth of that generation. Hence, taking lessons was voluntary, smoking was allowed, listening to music and wearing sunglasses wasn’t taboo and you could have even taken your pet with you in the class! Sounds fun? Well, the society didn’t consider it fun and hence it closed down! Good experiment though!

7) Gulu Elementary School, China

To reach this school is like making a herculean effort on a daily basis! The kids have to pass through the Luoma Way with sharp turns, narrow rocky passages and risky bridges to reach this school based in Sichuan Province in China. It started in 1980’s to empower a village and as improvement in its basic facilities, boasts of a proper toilet and a basketball court!

8) Harvey Milk High School, New York

This is a school dedicated to the needs of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders who otherwise feel humiliated and cornered in other institutions. Despite being attacked by society, the school survives till date and makes sure it’s students are treated like human beings and are no discriminated for their sexuality.

9) The Train Platform Schools Of India

Inderjit Khurana use to watch children begging while on her way to work on trains. This gave her an idea to start teaching these students on railway platforms between stations. What started as just one school now boasts of teaching 4000 needy children and even taking care of their food and medical needs of their family!

Studying amidst nature is dream come true for many. Enabling students aged 3-6 years are taught in outdoor classrooms helping them learn about nature in the most natural way. Just that kids need to be bit careful as the schools function in summers, winters and every other possible season!

Education has to be fun if it has to generate interest among students. These schools do provide an interesting way to study. Let’s hope more such alternative ways of studying come up to help many of our illiterate brethren come out of the darkness and see the light!

Yeah, now I guess I have the attention of all you lazy guys who are getting tormented by the sheer thought of working 14-15 hours like their friends and family normally does!

Don’t torture yourselves; we have a solution for you!

The only profession which offers you decent money, half a day of job and lots of vacations every year is also the noblest one.

Become a teacher!

See, you can also earn morality points by shaping the future of a generation along with earning money and teaching profession offers you lots of free time so it’s a win-win situation.

First of all, don’t assume that a teacher’s job is easy and of no consequence!!

It is one of the most responsible jobs and if not taken seriously, can seriously hamper the future of the entire nation. Teachers, after parents, are the ones who mould the impressionable minds of tiny toddlers and young kids into something, which makes them civilised and prepare them for a productive life ahead.

However, the job mostly requires 6-7hours a day of your time. Normally the working day starts from 7:30-8am and is over 1:30-2 pm. At the most, one can reach home by 3pm and then just chill! Or maybe do other chores and spend time with family.

Besides this, there are multiple long vacations to be enjoyed every year. In summers, it’s almost one and a half month of vacations and then in winters there is again almost two weeks of vacation. In some schools and education boards, period around Dushhera and Diwali also gets you about a week of vacations. These are the mandatory ones and then there are various other kinds of holidays all through the year to keep you relaxed and always rejuvenated so you can give your best!

Is it sounding exciting? Jumping out of that couch right away to join a school? Hold your horses, just wait!

It is not easy to be a teacher though! You got to know what you’re good at. You need to fulfil basic requirements to be a teacher like having a B.Ed degree. Most of all, you should have an aptitude to be around children and love them to bits without getting affected by their indiscipline or non-stop chatter!

If you just want to earn money, don’t join the profession. Only if you feel that you can contribute significantly to our education system, start preparing for a job.

After all, a profession that offers you to laze around deserve commitment and responsible behaviour in return of the few hours it seeks from you for working!
