Lack of sleep can destroy lives and few of the historic incidents have proven it. The importance of sleep cannot be overlooked when it is a disaster. Generally, people may have felt the loss in small dealing regularly, through which they realized the necessity of sleep. People working hard often forget that sleep is a need not a splendor. Losing balance or thinking ability for few seconds is always possible when there is less sleep.

More stress and no sleep have called for many unusual incidents. It wouldn’t have taken place if they had a complete sleep.

Challenger Space Explosion

In 1986, one of the biggest missions, the Challenger Space Explosion turned into a massive accident. The space program took place on the 28^th of January that broke into the Atlantic Ocean. No one was able to survive the seven crew members. It is one of the worst historical disasters that happened due to the lack of sleep.

Overtime work schedules of the engineers and the workplace or the lack of sleep had cause faults in developing the parts.  Proper examination of the spacecraft and the attachments were not to the mark. According to the NASA engineers they were worried about the cold temperature which was below on the day of launch. Comparing to their previous launches, the temperature on this day was -1degree Celsius.

The O rings joints were not able to handle the cold temperature which leads to the major disaster. It was later revealed that the reason for the disaster was due to the failure in engineering safety and also the workplace ethics.

Exxon Valdez Oil Spill incident due to lack of sleep

Due to the lack of sleep, no one was able to prevent the incident of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. The workers worked for almost 13 hours which was an abnormal timing for them to work accurately. Long time continuous work developed stress-reducing decision-making ability. The long working hours with tight deadlines had affected their quality of work.

The Exxon Valdes oil spill incident took place on 24^th March 1989. The oil tanker was not able to return or trace its path after avoiding ice. Finally, it collided with reef and the oil spill incident took place. This incident took place in Alaska USA.

According to the reports this incident took place due to the Third Mate. He had slept for only 2 hours which had stopped him to think and plan to return to his track. This led to the environmental disaster which took about 2$ billion to clean the sea.

Sleep deprivation will always push a person behind lacking in making any decision. Intelligence and strength both are challenged when there is a lack of sleep. Paul Whitney, a psychologist said that the ability to take new information and implement it is destroyed.

Scientists also mentioned that lack of sleep will destroy the function of the nervous system which pushes to major historical disasters.

OSIRIS REx, NASA’s spacecraft was launched from Cape Canaveral two years back which reached its target, Asteroid Bennu, one among the 500 thousand asteroids in the space, on Monday. Scientists are aiming to collect some sample dust from the asteroid which is believed to have provided life-preserving materials to Earth for a scientific study. The study in question involves finding the probability of life in Sun.

OSIRIX REx will is likely to make five close range aping runs before landing into orbit around the asteroid towards the end of the year. An engineer at the Lockheed Martin’s Flight Control center yelled in excitement as OSIRIS REx touched the asteroid while he was watching telemetry stream in from 76 million miles away which confirmed the critical rocket landing.

The detailed insights into NASA’s mission:

Scientists are of the belief that there are primitive bodies leftovers from the birth of the solar system some 4.6 billion years ago. The OSIRIS REx closes in on a denizen of the Kuiper belt a billion miles past ‘Pluto’.

OSIRIS REX is a convoluted acronym which stands for Origins, Spectral Interpretations, Resource Identification and Security-Regolith Explorer. This spacecraft is equipped with three cameras, two spectrometers, a laser altimeter and an X-Ray imaging system which is developed by college students.

What is the process of the scientific study and what are the results scientists are looking at?

OSIRIS REx also boasts of having a ‘touch-and-go sample acquisition mechanism’ or TAGSAM at the last end of the 10 foot long Robotic arm. After a detailed mapping and rehearsal until 2020, OSIRIS REx will stretch a robotic arm to High five asteroid and push TAGSAM which resembles an inverted pie dish which will contact the surface of Bennu. In the five minutes stint, compressed nitrogen gas will shoot into the collector which will stir up and lift some of the rocked soil. The sample is likely to be measured around 4.4 pounds which will be trapped in filters for returning to the Earth.

While its way back home, OSIRIS REx will extend the robot arm to place the sample inside an aerodynamic sample capsule and OSIRIS will wait for the Earth and Bennu to return to their basic positions in the orbits to start the trip home. According to Dante Lauretta, the Principle Investigator of the whole campaign, “We can’t leave Bennu before March of 2021, just because we have got to wait for the orbital mechanics to line up”. She further added, “So that’s about two-and-a-half years of operations at the asteroid. We only touch that asteroid for that brief, five seconds sampling contact. We are going to do everything we can to make sure e get the sample on the first attempt”.

The scientists are also planning to preserve some samples which will be subjected to two years of detailed analysis.

After reconnoitering the galaxy, patrolling the Mars, and strolling the space; NASA has set its limit to the giant star of our galaxy and the only source of light- Sun.

On 12^th August 2018, it has launched a seven-year long journey with Parker Solar Probe to unlock the mysteries of the star’s fiery outer atmosphere and its effect on the weather of the space. It is mankind’s first mission to kiss the sun.

According to the NASA chief scientist Jim Green, they were scheduling this solar mission ever since Eugene Parker said, “I believe the sun is outgassing” almost sixty years back. Parker’s prediction encountered much skepticism in 1950s, but with time it was proved that Parker was right. Thus, the name of the mission.

Studies have proved that the outgassing in the sun is the solar wind, which is the stream of charged particles flowing constantly from the sun. Parker Solar Probe is a historic and bold mission to unfold the deepest secrets of the giant star, the only source of energy and light. The USD 1.5 billion assignment will perform the closest ever observations of a star. The car sized spacecraft will travel directly into the sun’s atmosphere, called corona. The solar probe is planned to end up travelling faster than any spaceship and getting unprecedently closer to the star.

Parker Solar Probe will explore the region of the sun which is only visible from earth during total solar eclipses, when the moon blocks the sun.

The study of the measurements & imaginings collected from the mission would reveal the sun’s inner workings. Which will revolutionize the understanding of corona and how it processes to affect the Earth space.It will make nearly twenty-four passes through the corona.The mission holds answer to many scientists’ outstanding question, which will help to know our only source of energy much better. The spaceship carries a team of instruments to study the sun very keenly both remotely & directly.

The solar probe has to withstand 500times the solar radiation heat, which we experience on earth. The spacecraft’s sun facing side will be heated up-to 2500-degree F according to NASA officials. The conditions would be extreme, and the craft will be hammered like anything. To deal with the extreme heat, the probe is prepared with a shield made of carbon composite material, that will keep the instruments at a comfortable temperature of 85-degrees F. These shielded instruments will measure the sun’s electric & magnetic fields, waves and will photograph the corona & inner regions.

All such information will give the data helping the researchers to better predict and plan for intense solar storms, that may cause disruptions on Earth.

Parker Solar Probe lifted off from a pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force station. It was a great moment for 90 years old Dr. Eugene N Parker, who watched his first rocket launch as his namesake spacecraft was launched. With the efforts of such scientists, their dreams and unending quest; science is a blessing for mankind, which would leave no stone unturned for the betterment of humanity.

The ‘Black Marble’ was taken from the Suomi NPP Sattelite. The photo shows the lighting visible to the space at night. This photo stands proof how mankind is slowly gaining hold on space.

The photo was taken during Appollo 8 Mission, 1968. During the Christmas time, the Apollo orbited the moon which was publicly telecast on the Christmas Eve. This is the original ‘Blue Marble’ picture.
