There is a common belief among us Indians that the lifestyle in Dubai is way forward than ours and fast-paced, to say the least. On top of that, Dubai is really generous about paying their employees so we believe, settling there will be an overall rewarding experience. Needless to say, we are keen to settle in Dubai but wait, there are a few points that you need to heed before taking the plunge. Many Indians, nowadays are backing off from their decision of settling in Dubai for a few reasons. The most predominant reason, however, is the atrocious environment.

Although Dubai has wide array of career opportunities and opulence, Indians are now in two minds to settle there. Generally, so far Indians have migrated to the Gulf for jobs but there is a visibly significant slash in that margin for last few years. To tell you, migration to the Gulf for jobs has slashed by 62% percent which is not a small deal. This is the scenario of last five years and on probing into the matter, there are many reasons that have come to the fore. Furthermore, the Emigration clearances granted to Indians headed to the Gulf for employment have dropped by 21% too. It now stands at 2.95 lakh during the 11-month period ended in November 30, 2018 as compared to 2017. However, the five-year outflow of Indian workers to Gulf peaked in 2014 at 7.76 lakhs. In that respect the sharp decline, that is to say 62% percent seems fairly high. During 2018, the largest flow was to UAE, consisting 1.03 Lakhs or 35% of the total workers granted emigration clearances. This was followed by Saudi Arab and Dubai where at least 65,000 and 52,000 workers have migrated respectively. In that light, nearly 32,500 workers have migrated to Qatar as they were granted emigration clearances. It was as compared to close to 25,000 in 2017, that is a rise of 31%. These numbers as well as the non ECR passport holders going to the ECR countries for employment are not reflected in the e-migrate emigration clearance data.

What Indians really look for in Dubai?

Firstly, they look for basic comfort, typical 9-5 jobs, social security, safety, health and medical for family. People with great entrepreneurial goals look to settle their in Dubai and quite rightfully so.

What is the dark side of living in Dubai for the Indians?

Dubai, that is replete with swankiest mansions, sometimes fail to deliver on its promise. A common problem that is plaguing the country that is it doesn’t stand up to the standard anymore that once it was liked for. This is the metaphor of the neo-liberalized global world which is slowly crashing into history.

The shining baubles, as what the Gulf cities look like to us, has the grimmest reality and you will figure that out once you start living in the place.

Not that we were out of demand ever going by the mass migration to various countries, in fact every country of the world in past 100 or more years!

The difference is that earlier we were only required to do labour intensive jobs, which is still the major employment sector for Indians the world over and now Indian citizens are being given jobs of substance, power and authority! This means that we are in a position where we can actually change the way the world functions and are able to contribute to the society in a manner befitting our varied talents and skill sets!

After being CEO’s of some of the biggest companies in the world, being part of UN in a big manner, another gem to add on to our success stories abroad is the appointment of four Indian-origin Canadians as ministers in the newly elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet!

These are 42 years old Harjit Sajjan as the defence minister, 38 yr old Navdeep Bains as minister for innovation, science and economic development, Amarjeet Sodhi as minister for infrastructure and Bardish Chagger as Minister of small business and tourism!

Can you just imagine the importance of it? An Indian as the defence minister of a country consisting majorly of white people! This has nothing to do with the colour of skin, but the thought that he has been able to work his way up and gain that kind of trust and confidence in him from the electorate that they feel he is right guy to guard their borders!

This has everything to do with the right mindset that one can achieve anything, anywhere in the world, only if you have the will power and are ready to adapt to situations and make them work to your advantage! Indians are now heading big organisations, are being part of American government’s administration, just made it big in Canadian government and are making their worth felt the world over in various other positions. This might not mean that very soon we will have Indian-origin country heads in every country, but it surely means that our distinctive skill sets and talents are recognized globally. We are no longer just a commercial market, but are taken seriously for what our real worth is!

It’s no time to sit on our laurels, but to work double hard to make our and our fellow human beings’ life a lot easier and contribute in a productive manner to the society we are part of. This is surely India’s century and let nothing, not even our arrogance, ignorance or stupidities, stop us from making a mark!

Jai Ho!

This highly influential category of Indians is responsible for not only remitting millions of dollars back home every year, but also play a major role in shaping up India’s perception in front of the global community.

Obviously the politicians do what they have to do; these NRIs work at the ground level to make an impression.

However, what they project is what they believe about India and there comes the scary part. Yes, these Indians were born in India or they have been born abroad and been visiting India on a regular basis may be once or twice a year, but their knowledge about the real India, its culture, its day to day evolution is very limited. The major source of their knowledge is either Hindi movies or newspapers that they read. Apart from that, the interaction with the local population that is comprised of their extended families, friends, etc. helps them to make an opinion about the country.

Do you know what an average NRI thinks about India?

According to them, India is this exotic third world country that had a golden history, but is currently in shambles! When they visit India, they are mesmerized by the thought of old India, while criticizing the new one! How confusing is that, right? Not only this, even the language barriers are such that they feel confused about. For most of them who migrated decades ago, Hindi, Punjabi or any other regional language still has that beauty and they use words that the new generation of Indians living in India hardly speaks! Same goes about the cultural changes, women empowerment, matters of marriage and sex, etc.

The Changes That Occurred

India has changed massively in the past almost two decades in not only the lifestyle, but also the thought process. It may not be what developed nations are made of, but we are on our way there. However, we may or may not become like how developed nations are. Instead, ours is a different journey wherein we are imbibing the best and worst of western civilization and mixing it with our own inherent culture resulting in some kind of a mixture most people are not able to decipher! NRIs are no different lots. Despite being Indians, they are not in touch with day to day life of India and Indians and hence they no longer know the real India that is changing really fast!

They Are Not Idiots

It doesn’t mean they are fools or ignorant kinds, but their perception is flawed due to less exposure about the ground realities. The only fear this thought process generates is that since they are the ambassadors of our country, their half-knowledge can work against us, despite their best intentions!

All we can hope is that these highly successful NRIs, who have transformed their lives by moving abroad and are helping their motherland with money power as well as soft power of human touch, should not harm our interests by their old-school thoughts or awareness about the country!
