Strong emotions touch some raw chords and are more or less responsible for creating an unsaid bond between the past and the present smoothly flowing into the future. Bollywood is en-cashing on exactly such emotions in the name of entertainment and dishing out old stories in the garb of new age cinema.

A few years back there was a trend of remaking cult classics and a few of them did hit the bull’s eye on the box office. While the remake of Don did wonders, Ram Gopal Verma Ki Aag, the remake of Sholay, turned out to be sheer torture for the lovers of cinema!

So many songs and movies were remixed and remade in the disguise of sharing golden moments of Indian cinema with the new generation. Now when that hysteria has died down, the new fad is about making movies actually based in the bygone era.

Not that all movies are based in the 1940’s or 50’s, but increasingly the filmmakers are taking those years as the backdrop of their movies. Whether it was the biography of Milkha Singh, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag or the about to be released Bombay Velvet and Detective Byomkesh Bakshy, all these flicks are based in the yesteryears.

Even the recent surprise hit, Dum Laga Ke Haisha is from 1990’s, which brought back the sweet memories of a decade which is considered to be the turning point of Hindi movies as far as music and quality of production is concerned.

To have a perspective, let us inform you that remaking an old classic in today’s time is much easier rather than making a new film based in that era. The reason being, an old classic has a connection with the audience and not much effort is required in making an authentic 1960’s or 70’s or 50’s movie. Whereas if a movie is based in that era with a new story, minute detailing has to be taken care of if it has to connect with the audience of today. Hence the cost of making such flicks rise much higher and the efforts are doubled up. And sometimes in this process, the storytelling takes a back seat while the gimmicks of creating that bygone era take center-stage.

The recently released trailers of Detective Byomkesh Bakshy and Bombay Velvet show a lot of promise as far as nostalgic moments are concerned since most of the today’s generation has only heard or read about such a life from elders and books, but never lived it. This might be exciting visually, but the ultimate test will be if these movies have a gripping and engaging story.

With big names behind both the projects, Yash Raj Films, Dibakar Bannerjee, Anurag Kashyap, Ranbir Kapoor etc., the hopes are really high from these films.

May the two eras blend in seamlessly to give us an out of this world experience!

There would be loads of fashion experts suggesting ways to reduce that extra mass.

The movie #DumLagaKeHaisha on the contrary will show you how to wear your mass with flamboyance.

Yes if you happened to watch the film over the weekend then I am sure you must have developed an immediate likeable factor about the heroine.

The movie starring Ayushmann Khuarrana and Bhumi Pednekar as the main lead is not very appealing in terms of the entertainment factor. The film is rather lengthy. Nonetheless the personality depicted by the female lead – Bhumi is class apart.

She is without doubt the scene stealer.

The typical crave of the dream girl limits to figure and looks. Doing a fashion post I would not get into the ideal zone and preach about broadening outlook.

But beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. The beholder doesn’t necessarily have to be someone.

Before expecting others to see your inner beauty it is important that you first admire yourself.

If you are confident about your looks then no matter what people say you will always look beautiful. This is depicted in the character of Sandhya in the film played by Bhumi Pednekar. She tries wooing her husband Prem Prakash Tiwari played by Ayushmann but her life doesn’t revolve only around her husband. She makes it clear that she won’t take any s**t from anyone be it her in-laws or even her husband.

She files for a divorce and she makes the decision if she wants to be with him or not. Even though she loves him, she is not at his mercy.

This attitude of self-love is the most striking point in any personality.

The intellectual reverts to the hurtful taunts is another way of displaying your personality and sometimes silence is golden.

For example there is a scene in the film where her aunt-in-law deliberately asks her if people in her family go for morning walks. She reverts saying she does Yoga at home. The aunt replies “haan wo toh dikh raha hain.”

One would immediately expect the other person to feel hurt or show some sign of anger but when her aunt-in-law taunts her she simply ignores the comment and continues her work.

She loves her body and clearly she isn’t ashamed of it.

The silence and content expression would kill the person taunting you as to how you are so unaffected.

Last but not the least her dressing sense is also very classy. She wears mostly full sleeves sweaters blending perfectly with the sarees.

The attire beautifully compliments her figure and not to forget the hand bag on her shoulder adds simplicity to her unique personality.

If you have these 3 things: self-respect, killer IQ and flamboyance then you can change the perception just like Bhumi Pednekar does in this film as she shows how being fat is fashionable too.

Indian marriages are considered big, grand and colorful, almost like a festive celebration.

Well sometimes the brides-to-be aren’t from well off families to mark a grand celebration of the most important occasion of their lives. The government and some organizations come to their rescue. They arrange mass weddings wherein many people participate and get hitched in one ‘mandap’ (venue).

This way the cost is shared amongst the families and the grandeur of the occasion is also not compromised.

In this movie, Ayshmann Khurrana gets into such a marriage and is hitched to Bhumi Padnekar.

It is evident that he clearly didn’t expect the pairing to happen this way.

Looks as if the number 18 is forced on him.

https://www.youngisthan.in/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Mass-Marriage-video-1.webm

Are these numbers decided beforehand by the families or are they just randomly numbered and the people sporting the same numbers are coupled?

Really if the numbering is random then I don’t even want to imagine the plight of the person who isn’t satisfied. A blind date gone wrong is still fine but to get committed for the rest of your life is a different ballgame altogether.

Well such traditions do happen in India and it isn’t restricted to any religion.

In 2011 3,600 couples were reported to be married in such a grand ceremony. They belonged to various religions and sects – Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, Christians, Adivasis, etc.

Sometimes it is the organisations and at times it might be a rich tycoon donning the duties of a father figure to several unfortunate girls.

The end of 2014 witnessed a gesture of goodwill by an Indian diamond trader who arranged a mass wedding for 111 fatherless women. He decided to be the father of all these women and gift each bride gold and gifts worth almost $7250.

In the above case it was a gesture of goodwill but in some cases it gets ugly.

The Madhya Pradesh Govt. was in the news for conducting a virginity and pregnancy test on the women participating in the mass marriage they organized. 450 women were reported to undergo this testing and 9 women, as per reports, were banned from participating as they were found pregnant.

This must have made you totally confused as to which direction is Bollywood moving in, right?

Hollywood and the whole of western media show women skinnier than skinny and Bollywood wants women to look healthy (fat, for common man’s understanding!)?

How can this be?

What has brought such a change in our Hindi film industry which is most of the times so hypocritical about physical appearances?

First of all, let us tell you the reason for this story. This is based on the latest trailer of an upcoming movie of Ayushmann Khurana titled, Dum Laga Ke Haisha! Being produced by Yash Raj Films and directed by Maneesh Sharma (of Band Baaja Baarat fame) the interesting about the movie is that it is about a husband and wife in which husband is thin while the wife is heavy or rather fat.

Director Manish with Leading star cast of Dum Lagake haisha

Given this premise, as per the trailer, no one is planning to lose weight or gain weight, but letting love develop irrespective of the sizes!

Interesting, isn’t it?

Never before it has been attempted in Bollywood that over-weight has been celebrated, accepted and used to show that love can happen anytime, anywhere, between any two people and physical appearance isn’t that important. In this context, it is definitely a coming of age cinema, feeding into the changing sensibilities of society and contributing in its own sweet manner to the idea of love being above everything else.

However, the trend was started some time ago when Hindi film industry, notoriously known for its size zero actresses and promoting thinner than thin figures for girls, started writing and giving roles to girls who were on the heavier side in real life.

Vidya Balan

The best examples are Vidya Balan and Parineeti Chopra. Both are examples of girls who are terrific actresses and despite not having the so called perfect figure are getting roles in film after film purely on the acting talent!

Parineeti Chopra

In this movie, a new girl is making her debut.

Her name is Bhumi Pednekar and she is the one who took auditions for Parineeti Chopra’s debut movie! Bhumi has been working with Yash Raj Films for some time now and fits the role to the T! The trailer is impressive and looks like the movie is going to be fun without being preachy.

Bhumi Pednekar

It is high time such themes and stories are explored in our industry, which are closer to reality, give a message and are still full of entertainment!

Kudos to Aditya Chopra for thinking out of the box and producing a film like this! Hopefully, the film will be as much fun as the trailer is!

Do watch it and share your views with us!
