There is quite a fortune spent on Bollywood period dramas and not all of them are eligible to dote on. Some period dramas that were hyperbolic and seemingly distorted history didn’t augur well for a box-office success whereas we keep revisiting some of the period dramas to feel ripple of excitement inside us. We are here giving you 10 names of some Bollywood period dramas that are our all-time favourites.

Lagaan:

The film was directed by Ashutosh Govarikar which was nominated for Academy Award in the category of Best Foreign language film. The story take us back in the time of British colonial India where a cricket match is held between the snooty British Raj landlords and peasants who never played the game. The peasants win eventually.

Hey Ram:

Hey Ram is directed by Kamal Hassan and he acted in it too. The film was nominated as the best foreign language film in the Oscars. The film depicts the mutation of a lovable person to a religious fanatic during the Bengal partition.

Jodhaa Akbar:

This was Ashutosh Govarikar’s dream project which thrives around the love story of Mughal emperor Akbar and Rajput princess Jodhaa who were tied in a marital alliance for political reasons but eventually fell in love.

Mughl-e-Azam:

The film is one of the landmark films of India history directed by K. Asif. The film deals with the infamous love affair between Prince Salim and the courtesan Anarkali which sparked a conflict between father and son.

Ashoka:

The story of emperor Ashoka and his love affair with the Princess Karubaki is the theme of the story. The movie was directed by Santosh Sivan which also sheds light on Ashoka’s life before Buddhism.

Bajirao Mastani:

It is a heart-warming love story between the fearsome Peshwa Bajirao and Mastani, his Muslim second wife. This is basically a love triangle between Bajirao, Kasibai (Bajirao’s wife) and Mastani who was head-over-heels in love with Bajirao.

Gadar: Ek Prem Katha:

The film released in the same day as Lagaan and co-incidentally both were period dramas. It is a lovestorty between a Sigh Truck Driver and A Muslim high-born rich girl in the backdrop of Indian partition.

Devdas:

Though it doesn’t completely hold true with what Saratchandra wrote in his book, the film that is themed on the subject still managed to catch our fancy because of the magnificent treatment and opulent sets.  It is the story of Devdas, Paro and Chandramukhi, precisely a lovestory in British India.

Lootera:

Quite a film! Totally worth more than one watch which is based on the short story of O’ Henry called ‘The Last Leaf’. The story was adapted into an Indian rural Bengal setting which showed a feel-good love story. The music was really soothing as Amit Trivedi being the composer.

Bhag Milkha Bhag:

It is based on the life of Olympian Milkha Singh. Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, the film was highly lauded by the critics and audience alike. Such biopics should be made more often.

Two of the major game changers of the indusrty involved in a verbal tiff! Isn’t it going to be a sight?

Well, both of them are waiting for their major releases before they bid adieus to 2015. SRK’s Dilwale and Deepika’s Bajirao Mastani are two most awaited flicks of the year and we are hoping that they will wind up the year on a positive note. Both the films are releasing on 18th December, 2015.

We know, it’s just one more day of anxiety before the two predicted blockbusters hit the theaters! Also, with the two films clashing, one expected a lot of drama between the two filmmakers and the actors of the films but nothing of that sort panned out.

In fact, earlier only Bajirao Mastani faced the wrath of controversies but now  Dilwale fell under the scrutiny of political party, MNS, who started a boycotting spree. Now, if we may ask, how exactly a hate campaign got loaded only in the last week of film release and not before that, ever since heavy film promotions were going on at various platforms?

Isn’t it just another marketing gimmick?

Whatever that may be, let’s divert our attention to a rather spicy drama that took place amongst the elad actors of the flicks, and that too in open, for all to see.

It occurred during a promotional event of Dilwale where SRK was  quoted saying, “The other film (Bajirao Mastani) is also made by friends. Our genre is more family and happy-go-lucky kind. Their genre is niche and historical. For both films, audience will come in at different time and watch it. Both are really nice movies.”

Boom!!

And the blast took place. News is, that this didn’t go down well with Mastani Deepika she raised an objection saying, “I wouldn’t call Bajirao as niche at all. In fact, one of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s strength is, that in a film like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam or Devdas or Ram Leela, or even Black, he has his way of story-telling and yet he makes his movies globally appealing.” No no, she didn’t stop here! She has her own authority you see, and is not afraid of SRK anymore. She added “I don’t know what Shah Rukh meant when he called the film niche, but both are totally different genres. I have worked with both the directors and know what both of them have to offer are very, very different. Even as an audience you won’t be able to compare the two, one is action, comedy romance while Bajirao Mastani is completely different.”

Rubbing him wrong way will lead you to success or somewhere else, we aren’t sure but what we are sure about is, the two flicks have certainly bagged the right spice before the release.

Bajirao Mastani is a period movie by famous movie maker Sanjay Leela Bhansali based on the life of King Baji Rao (played by Ranveer Singh) and his wives (played Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone).

The movie will be released in month’s time. Slowly, movie scenes and songs are doling out.

Recently the movie released its second song called Pinga. It received mixed reviews, some criticized it and some said how raving the song was.

And now the song is in news again as  Bajirao’s descendant, Mohini Karkarey, has slammed the song for not getting the facts right.

She wrote an open letter in DNA publication. She lashed out by giving facts and asked the maker of movie that did he do any research for the song and movie. She also said that these distorted facts, which will be presented in the movie, will make a mockery out of the Peshwa family.

Here is the open letter by Bajirao’s kin:

Mr. Bhansali,

The time has now come to speak out, to speak out against the picturization in the song and certain scenes from your movie, Bajirao Mastani. The latest song Pinga and the dance sequence which you have promoted have a lot of undesirable elements.

This is not fiction, Mr. Bhansali.

You have portrayed real people who have been recorded in history. The Peshwas ruled for more than 100 years. Did you do any research at all? Did you, for instance, understand the life and times of people in the 1700s? Do you know and understand their behavioral pattern?

Here are a few recorded facts for your perusal:

Fact 1: Kashibai Saheb was suffering from tuberculosis and had arthritis. Due to this she had a limp.

Fact 2: Kashibai would never get into a dance routine even if she was healthy because that was not in the culture.

Fact 3: The costumes shown in the song Pinga were never worn by royal families or even normal women. The way the nauvari was draped did not show even an ounce of skin.

Fact 4: Kashibai and Mastani met only once in their lifetime and that too formally.

Fact 5: Kashibai was the daughter of Mahadji Krishna Joshi from Chaas and was known as Chaskar Joshi. Her descendants are still alive.

Fact 6: Mastani was not a courtesan or dancer. She was the daughter of Raja Chatrasaal of Bundelkhand. She was married to Bajirao and was his second wife. Mastani’s descendants, the Nawabs of Banda, will give you enough proof of this.

Bajirao was a great warrior second only to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. With this so called love story, you have made a mockery of him. You have insulted the very essence of Maharashtrian families. This will definitely create a flawed image about such a great personality and his family.

In the film ‘Devdas’ again directed by SLB Madhuri Dixit had to wear an outfit that weighed 30kgs. She was wearing this outfit and dancing in the song ‘Kaahe Chhed Mohe’

In this film there was also news about Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s ear bleeding during the shoot of the song ‘Dola re dola’. The earrings she wore were too heavy for her fragile ears and unable to bear the weight, started bleeding.

Well the actress is known for the complex mix of fragility and strength. She tolerated the pain silently and revealed only after the shoot.

Well we really can’t wait to see the weighty costume of Deepika in ‘Bajirao Mastani’.
