Rahul Gandhi And His Unruly Men

At a time when the political discourse is hitting a new low, Rahul needs to reign in his ministers. If he is not able to do such a simple task, how will he keep his men in line if elected prime minister? Afterall, it is just another display of lack in leadership abilities.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has finally pulled up union minister Salman Khurshid for his crass remarks on Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi. Issuing a one liner, Rahul said that he “did not appreciate such language”.

Khurshid had called Modi “napunsak” (impotent) raking up the issue of 2002 Gujarat riots. He had clarified later that he used the word in order to show Modi’s incompetence in controlling and stopping the riots.

It should be noted that Rahul has been chiding his men over usage of bad language for a long time.

Only earlier this month Rahul had warned his partymen to be careful of the language they use saying any abuse towards the opposition would not be tolerated. “It is wrong to make personal attacks on the Opposition,” Gandhi told Congress spokespersons during an internal meeting, NDTV had reported.

But they do not seem to care.

Just a few weeks ago, Manishankar Aiyar had called Modi a ‘chaiwallah’ in the AICC session in New Delhi on 18 Januray. “I promise you in the 21st century Narendra Modi will never become the prime minister of the country. But if he wants to distribute tea here, we will find a place for him,” Aiyar had said.

That time too Rahul had said that he does not approve of bad language used by Congress leaders.

The Congress senior leadership has been making way for Rahul and his new policies. But they do not seem to be ready to accept their sidelined role.
