Congress’ Answer To NaMo Tea Stall: Rahul Milk

Some may remember Amul’s picture perfect ad including Rahul Gandhi in it as ‘˜Amul baby’ after veteran leftist leader VS Achuthanandan had called him one. It seems Congress unit in the east Uttar Pradesh certainly did.

Some may remember Amul’s picture perfect ad including Rahul Gandhi in it as ‘Amul baby’ after veteran leftist leader VS Achuthanandan had called him one. It seems Congress unit in the east Uttar Pradesh certainly did.

Reportedly, to counter Narendra Modi’s soaring popularity and his NaMo tea stalls, Congressmen from Gorakhpur have set up ‘Rahul Milk’ campaign with 24 stalls offering people free cups of warm milk.

According to reports, the flex-boards bear Rahul Gandhi’s smiling image and a slogan alongside: “BJP ki zehreeli chai nahin, doodh pilayenge, desh ke naujawano ko pahalwan banayenge.”

“Tea does not have much medicinal benefits while milk is good for health. Besides milk is an Indian drink. Tea is a foreign drink,” a Gorakhpur district Congress leaders is reported to have told Deccan Herald. Syed Jamal, district Congress president, said the campaign would be rolled out in rural Gorakhpur as well. Jamal reportedly told The Indian Express that the BJP’s tea spreads “communal poison”.

Uttar Pradesh leaders certainly like pehelwans as made clear by Mulayam Singh Yadav and his son, chief minister of the state, Akhilesh Yadav’s previous campaigns and rallies. But will these pehelwans use Rahul milk has serious doubts as Mulayam is all about third front now.

Also, it is no secret that the Congress party had been irked by the Amul baby jibe which has become a common term for Rahul after ‘pappu’. The innocent Gorakhpur Congress unit has refreshed our memories.

But like other attempts of Congress to revive Rahul’s image, this one is again to backfire. Poor Gorakhpur cadre may facethe wrath. Or not if Manishankar Aiyar chooses to make doodhwala jokes…
