Don’t call me after work hours, please!

How many times have you been hounded by ‘official calls’ while downing a couple of pegs with your buddies? How many times have you gotten up mid meal to text back your boss? Don’t you think there should be a law on post-work calling?

How many times have you been hounded by ‘official calls’ while downing a couple of pegs with your buddies? How many times have you gotten up mid meal to text back your boss? How many times have you e-mailed your superior while on a family vacay? Countless times, right? In fact, the reason for undue stress levels is those untimely calls and pings that irritate us after we have officially left from work. Don’t you think there should be a law on post-work calling?

Don’t look so confused! Germany’s labour ministry has passed a new rule wherein no manager can call or try to reach his/her employee after the end of day at work. If the Indian Ministry followed suit, wouldn’t it turn out to be one happy work place for us? Imagine what this law can do to your social life. You would never have to miss out on your son’s first steps or your finance’s exotic birthday party or that movie you have been desperate to watch! You’d have more time with friends and family and go from being a social recluse to the life of the party.

No more canceling on important celebrations, no more popping of BP pills and certainly no more visits to the shrink. Life will be smooth, tension-free and more fulfilling. Sigh.

We strongly feel that the Indian ministry should scrutinize this law as happier people will be more productive and efficient. As it is the art of ‘switching off’ has disappeared, what with the intrusion of cell phones and internet. Everybody knows your moves, thanks to status updates, check-ins and Tweets. There’s no point of a holiday if we are continue to be at the beck and call of our employer. After all, there’s more to life than slogging, isn’t it?

Even workaholics like to call it a day sometimes, so this law is a MUST. If not the Manmohan Singh government, at least the next one should usher in this much needed change. Life shouldn’t be lived with regrets, you get to live only once and it better be worth it.
