Opposition anti-poor, says Rahul

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi Tuesday accused the opposition of being “anti-poor”.

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi Tuesday accused the opposition of being “anti-poor”.

“There is a major difference between our thinking and the opposition,” Gandhi told an election rally here attended by tens of thousands.

“We say this country is for everyone, the rich and poor, farmers and tribals. The opposition talks about infrastructure development, building of airports and roads but they do not talk about the poor.

“They think that development of roads, rail lines and airports will change the country… We also want to develop infrastructure but we want the poor to be part of this growth,” Gandhi said.

“In fact,” he added, “we did more infrastructure development then the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) did during its regime.”

His reference was to the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA regime that ruled India from 1998 to 2004.

The Congress star praised the Congress government in Rajasthan led by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.

Besides developing infrastructure, the state government had ensured jobs to the poor and provided free medicines and medical facilities to all.

“The BJP says the medicines being provided are poison. Is that right?

“We have also given RTI (Right to Information Act) and food security to the people. The Congress has worked to empower the poor.”

Gandhi highlighted the significance of the Delhi-Mumbai industrial corridor and highlighted how it would benefit people at large.

He reminded the audience that when his father and then prime minister Rajiv Gandhi spoke about computerization, the opposition was against it.

But now computers have become an important part of life, he said.

“The opposition is not worried about the future. They are only interested in grabbing power.

“Those who want to divide the country only think about the present,” said Gandhi. “They don’t care about the future.”
