Throughout his illustrious 16-year career at Liverpool Football club, talisman and now skipper, Steven Gerrard has played the role of a midfielder. Even in national colours, ‘Stevie G’ made his name as one of the finest mid-fielders in the world. Such was his status that even the likes of Xavi and Andres Iniesta, Barcelona’s midfield supremo’s lavished praises on the England captain. But here comes the wacky part! Current Liverpool caoch Brendan Rodgers has said that Steven Gerrard, can finish his career as a central defender! Seriously Brendan?

Rodgers has the ability to switch positions as Gerrard approaches his mid-30s in a bid to lengthen an already illustrious 16 years at the top. On the eve of Manchester United’s Ryan Giggs turning 40, Rodgers was in no doubt that Gerrard is capable of extending his time at Liverpool for a good few years and a positional change could prolong that even further.

As quoted in an English daily, Rodgers said, “He is as fit as he has ever been. You adapt and change. I think he can play as No. 2 centre half later in his career. He passes the ball as good as anyone in the world. Ryan has been blessed genetically with a body that allows him to stay fit. At this moment in time, Steven is really fit.”

Sir Alex Ferguson had criticised Steven Gerrard in his recently released autobiography. But Rodgers is quick to rebuke his claims. He adds, “He [Ferguson] is one of the very few, maybe even the only one [who doesn’t think he’s a top player],” Rodgers had said in October. “I don’t think it was credible, in terms of what was said. Look at the accolades that he has received all his life. I noticed there was a survey on the PFA Player of the Year, as to who was the all time best winner. Steven Gerrard came out as the best, ahead of some great names. He is a top, top player. He is a world class player who still operates at a very high level.”

Gerrard who started his Liverpool career as a right back (defence), would know how to play according to his strengths. Knowing the capabilities of Gerrard, football fans would want him to play football rather than just see him switch positions!
