Ravichandran Ashwin – India’s new batting all-rounder

Ravichandran Ashwin’s hard fought 124 along with Rohit Sharma have given Team India an upper hand in the 1st Test against the West Indies at the Eden Gardens.

Indian batting might boast big names but Ravichandran Ashwin’s hard fought 124 along with Rohit Sharma have given Team India an upper hand in the 1st Test against West Indies at the Eden Gardens. His knock might make the critics take notice that he should be taken seriously as a batsman. Here are his best Test innings under pressure:

103 vs. West Indies, Mumbai, 2011
After a massive total of 590 posted by the West Indies at the Wankhede, Indian batting line-up fizzled out until R Ashwin showed up. His gritty knock of 103 (maiden ton) ensured India got close of the West Indies total. India eventually ended up drawing the Test with a close finish.

62 vs. Australia, Sydney, 2012
Indian batsmen fell like a pack of cards as Australia dominated this 2nd Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Australia’s grand total of 659 was too much but in the 2nd innings, some fight by R Ashwin took India to a respectable total.

68 vs. England, Mumbai, 2012
Indian batsmen once again failed but Cheteshwar Pujara and R Ashwin ensured that India had a say in the 2nd Test in Mumbai. Even though India lost the Test, Ashwin’s batting display was praised by the critics.

91 vs. England, Kolkata, 2012
R Ashwin’s love affair with Kolkata dates to last year when his knock of 91 against England in the 1st innings brought some respect to the Indian total as England went on to seize the momentum and win the series 2-1.
