India vs. New Zealand Test Series 2014: Players Who Need To Step Up

“For India, the nightmare might just continue” said former Kiwi great, Martin Crowe in an interview with ESPNCricinfo. For Team India, this tour has really been a nightmare since their 4-0 whitewash in the ODIs but MS Dhoni would look to avert it in the upcoming Tests as they will like to pull the plug. The visitors’ are currently struggling on the batting front and here are some players who we think should step up on the gear:

Rohit Sharma
The Mumbai batsman must be still thinking that he is still in ‘la-la land’ when he scored two tons on his debut (against a weak West Indies) and it call came down when Steyn and co. crashed through his defence in the South Africa series. Kiwi bowlers have got the better of him in the ODIs but its time Rohit turned the other way round and proved why he deserves the India whites.

Shikhar Dhawan
We all are missing Shikhar Dhawan of the ‘old’ who attacked from the word go! off late, the Delhi southpaw is playing under the cosh of being watchful and has been vulnerable to the shorter delivery. Shikhar and the team management must sit down and find a solution to this and if they do, we might yet another fireworks on the cards.

MS Dhoni
The Indian skipper has yet to fulfill as a role of a Test batsman. Even though the players around him are doing well, Dhoni has yet to bail out his team from difficult situations. His last ton – a double century (224) came against the Aussies in February 2013. If Dhoni starts scoring, expect Team India to dominate the Test matches.

Murali Vijay
India’s opening batsman in the Test arena, Murali Vijay had a good outing in South Africa so he is quite upbeat of putting up a good show in New Zealand. Even though Vijay has been calm and composed while at the crease, he has unable to convert the starts (50s to 100S) at the top. Once he does that, Murali Vijay is a treat to watch!

Ajinkya Rahane
Yes, Ajinkya Rahane was the find of the Indian Test team that lost 1-0 in South Africa but tougher conditions awaits here in Kiwiland. Rahane who has not been successful in the ODIs, should put that behind him and put on a good show with the bat in the Tests.
