#SexEducation or #Sanskaar: Why Do Parents Find Themselves At Crossroads?

If not for anything else, sex education should at least be introduced, to caution girls and guys about the crimes that involve it.

Sex education refers to teaching an individual about the reproductive system of humans, sexual practices of LGBT, and any other scientific detail related to sex.

The education is considered important for teenagers especially, as they are the ones who apply the concepts of human anatomy in future.

With the physical and mental growth of a child, comes numerous changes which he/she experiences. The changes refer to hormonal, psychological, and practical differences they face during that phase.

In India, a teenager finds it absolutely okay to discuss things with friends, mostly with the expectation of gaining more information.

However, more often than never, he/she ends up receiving incorrect and inadequate knowledge and develops wrong opinion about sex. While on one hand, correct and complete knowledge  is essential to understand the intricacies of this practice, wrong knowledge leads to negative changes in teenager’s mind.

We have always been hesitant about promoting sex education in India, citing reasons such as, ”consideration of discussion of sex as a taboo in homes and society”, “that sort of education will pollute the minds of kids”, “that’s a big deviation from studies”. Quite a few of them out there also consider it as a bad influence of westernization. Not long back did the Indian government state that Sex Education “has absolutely no place” in our education system.

A survey shows that most Indian parents want their children to be well informed about sex education, rather than gleaning arguable information from the internet.

The question that lies ahead of us is, how can the school educate them on such topic, when their parents are embarrassed to talk about it? They say, it’s not in our culture to talk about such a thing, in front of our children. What surprises me is that they are quite aware of the fact that sooner or later the children are going to learn about it all by themselves; and it is as natural as any other biological process, they why not be open about it?

A good number of child abuse and sexual assault cases have been reported, in which the victim had no clue about what was going on. If not for anything else, sex education should at least be introduced, to caution girls and guys about the crimes that involve it.

Sex education is an important curriculum for children in higher grades, and has been neglected for long. It is always better to be late than never, to introduce sex education in schools.
