Is Shahrukh Khan Losing Sanity Under Stress?

This story deals with Shahrukh’s latest statement that Rs. 100 crore revenue for a Hindi film is nothing. It should be thousands of crores. Is he being sarcastic about his contemporaries’ achievement?

Aamir Khan’s Dhoom 3 did a total lifetime business of around Rs. 500crores and is the highest ranked Hindi film in terms of Box Office collection!

Salman Khan’s Kick has done a business of around Rs. 400crores and still has few more avenues to earn from!

Hrithik Roshan’s latest release Bang Bang has earned Rs. 120crores in first three days of the release and is going super strong at Box Office!

Reading these kind of figures, even though awesome for the film industry, must be giving sleepless nights to the King of Bollywood, Shahrukh Khan!

No, he is not aged, down and out, not yet at least. In fact only last year he gave a super-duper hit in the form of Chennai Express which is India’s third highest grossing film ever with a business of around Rs. 330crores. But the way industry is growing and every other flick is raking in mind-boggling revenues, it must be really scary for SRK!

That is the reason, just before his next release, Happy New Year, SRK is giving statements like for a film to make Rs. 100crores at box office is no big deal. He went on to add that movie-makers should aim for a revenues which should be at least half of what a Hollywood biggie Avatar made globally, then only the film should be considered a hit!

Really Shahrukh, like really??

It sounds like either a joke or may be Shahrukh is crumbling under the tremendous amount of stress he must be having owing to the imminent release of his flick. What else can justify his below-the-belt sarcastic remark about films which are crossing the Rs.100crore mark as being not doing enough?

Come to think of it, SRK’s idea behind the comment is commendable that yes, one should try for the moon, think really big and should not settle for less.

But comparing the industry with such Hollywood biggies is ridiculous. The reason being, a film like Avatar is not only a technologically genius film, it also boasts of an amazing story-line, grand creativity and an impeccable eye for details. Now, which Bollywood film can come close to it, even if made with such huge budgets?

Even SRK’s own home production which was high on technology, Ra One, was such a stupid film as far as story and performances go resulting in it being the year’s biggest flop! For a film to be accepted globally and earn that kind of money, it need not be grand only on visuals, but also content which is missing from most of Bollywood’s so called huge hits! Except for 3 Idiots, none of the money minters can claim to be intellectually stimulating or having content that will be remembered for years down the line.

With Happy New Year as well, the trailers clearly promise that as audience, leave your brains behind as it is a project helmed by queen of masala no-brain entertainers, Farah Khan!

It might do good business based on massive promotions and glitz and glamour associated with it, but can it become India’s highest grossing film ever? Only time will tell, but that’s exactly what must be making SRK so edgy and scared of competition!

Given Shahrukh’s stature in the entertainment world, hope he walks the talk and contributes to cinema that not only makes money, but also entertains in a way which has a repeat value. Unless that happens, movies like his will only make money in the first three days of release and then people will forget them conveniently!

Hope you’re reading this SRK!
