In fact it is learnt that, when people get less than 6 or 7 hours of sleep each night, their risk for developing diseases begins to climb. So why do we require sleep? Is it a compulsion? You bet on it. Here’s why:

Heart attacks and strokes are so common during the wee hours. This actuality may be explained by the way sleep interacts with the blood vessels. In reality, lack of sleep can lead to the worsening of blood pressure and cholesterol and all those risk factors for heart disease and stroke. So to avoid such complications, your heart will be healthier if you get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep each night.

When one’s body is lacking sleep, it goes into a state of stress. Thus, the body’s functions are put on high alert which result in increase in blood pressure and a production of stress hormones. High blood pressure can increase your risk for heart attacks and strokes. Also, the stress hormones make it harder for one to get a good sleep. In order to combat them, one should adhere to relaxation techniques to counter the effects of stress.

The hormones – ghrelin and leptin which are important for the regulation of appetite, are disrupted due to a lack of sleep.
