It not only brings you to diverse cultures, but also lets you taste their indigenous cuisine, let alone liquor. For instance, if you visit Nagaland during Hornbill Festival that falls in February, you will get to taste their authentic rice beer. The carousers will leave no opportunity unused to taste the authentic liquors but there are people who have aversion towards it. The latter kind will seek destinations with cultures that don’t emphasize drinking, neither any loud nighttime activities for that matter. In a nutshell, those are the sober travelers and singling out the perfect holiday destination for them is fairly difficult. Here are, however some places you can consider to visit in case you don’t cotton to alcohol culture much:

Sri Lanka:

There are prevalent religious and cultural reasons behind them not drinking alcohol. So, you will feel a lot of peace as a sober traveler. Besides, the Muslim and Buddhist cultural stronghold ensures sobriety. You can enjoy a delectable range of local cuisine instead.

Japan:

The delicious food, sights and views will seal the deal. There will be no requirement for alcohol to get you intoxicated. Although, you can catch crowds bustling over beer in local restaurants but you will have no waiters pursuing you to order alcohol.

Seoul:

Korea is known for its street food and you can indulge in them with your heart’s content. The travelling experience will be no less than a fairytale because of the nighttime markets that remain open until the wee hours of the morning selling almost anything in hilariously cheap prices. The restaurants and cafes remain open 24 hours but there is so much more to do than drinking so relax!

LA:

The main draw of Los Angeles is that it inundates you with healthy food. You can hike and surf in Malibu, play Beach Volleyball or take a romantic stride across the famous Manhattan beach. Best, you can also cruise along the Pacific Coast Highway. So, rest assured, you won’t get much drunkards swarming the street.

Santorini:

Even though it is famous for being a party island, Santorini is not a place for drunkards. You can have the time of your life here in the beaches, hikes, gyros and frappes. The whole town comes alive in the night, beaming with happy faces completely in their senses. The restaurants too remain open until dawn so you can probably sip coffee from a dreamy beach restaurant catching glimpses of the idyllic beaches.

Morocco:

The Muslim populace are repelled to drinking. Let me put it clearly, alcohol is available in Morocco but definitely not the part of their culture. Not even a single shop you will see advertising it as if it is no big thing. I am almost getting goosebumps here thinking about the maze-like cities, windy streets and the Sahara desert. You can instead enjoy varied types of coffee here rather than alcohol.

Awesomeness at their best, these places are paradisiacal for those non-drinkers.

Apart from that, the records being broken, the sweet victory on Sri Lankan soil after 22 years is all going to be a part of cherished memories for years to come. It is not every day that a team full of such youngsters and players who are in and out of the team come together as a unit and give a stunning performance like this.

What exactly happened here? What changed?

There will be a detailed analysis obviously and the team management is going to find out what actually worked so that the same formula can be repeated in future as well. Next test match series is with South Africa and that will be the real challenge. But let’s first focus on how things have worked out at the moment and have that somehow made M S Dhoni irrelevant to the team?

First of all, it is all about Virat Kohli’s persona, charisma and the aggressiveness that has rubbed on his team members. Most of them are around his age and somehow can relate to his body language as well as mental attitude. The hunger for winning a match has somehow been clearly visible. Instead of being passive and trying to avoid losing a match, the players seemed in a mindset to go out and conquer the world! The fear of losing is out and passion for winning is in! Whether it is Ishant Sharma who bowled his heart out or Amit Mishra’s come back with such a beautiful spell or Ashwin’s phenomenal performance, the credit goes to them as much as to their captain Kohli who has been able to support them and give them the freedom to give their best.

With Dhoni, the team looked jaded, tired and in a reclusive mode even before the match started. It used to look as if they were touring to draw the series or to save their face, instead of showing the mindset to win. Also, Dhoni’s tactics in a test-match usually looked defensive instead of attacking or aggressive, the way he acts in a one-day match or T20!

It is just one series and the jury is still out whether the same set of boys can repeat this feat against stronger and tougher teams like South Africa, England and Australia, but the change is in the air. Dhoni is definitely an amazing captain and player in one-dayers, but the kind of change Virat is bringing in, would it be possible for the boys to perform under two different captains in two different formats of the game? Would they be able to give their best in one-days the way they performed in test matches? How would the team composition change under different captains?

All these questions will pose a challenge for Indian cricket per se and it would be interesting to see how Dhoni copes up with the changed dressing room! We still need Dhoni, but going by the trends, soon he may not be missed much!

Better days are ahead, for sure!

Where West Indies convincingly beat UAE, Pakistan took their own time to strike the final blow against Ireland.

Though it was an easy win for West Indies, they had to chase whatever the target set inside 36 overs. They managed to do that in the 31st over after losing 4 wickets.

Jason Holder, the West Indies captain, was extremely pleased with the result and must have revelled in his own individual performance of 4 for 27.

West Indies captain Jason Holder celebrates a wicket

“We needed to win by a certain margin. We had to show positive intent. We knew we had to finish the game inside 36 overs and we did it”, is what he said during the post-match presentation ceremony.

The final Pool match between Pakistan and Ireland saw Pakistani wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed become the first man since 2007 World Cup to score a century for his team in this major tournament.

Sarfraz Ahmed scored an unbeaten century against Ireland

The conclusion of yesterday’s matches meant that the World Cup has its eight quarter-finalist teams – South Africa, Sri Lanka, India, New Zealand, Australia, Bangladesh, Pakistan and West Indies – that will compete against one another for the coveted prize.

The first quarter-final match will be played on 18th March between Sri Lanka and South Africa. Defending champions India will take on their Asian adversary Bangladesh on the 19th in Melbourne. Australia, the four-time former World Cup champion, will face Pakistan on March 20. The quarter-finals will end with co-host New Zealand taking on West Indies on the 21st of March in Wellington.

Where the post-match programme Cricket Live yesterday saw the cricket legends predicting winners of the quarter-finals as South Africa, India, Australia and New Zealand, it will only be on the match day when we get to witness as to which teams handle the pressure better.

In case any of the quarter-final / semi-final matches gets abandoned or tied, the team that finished in a higher position than their opponent would move on to the next stage of the competition.
