The verdict is out!

The people of India have spoken again according to an ET report and it seems that Maruti Suzuki is winning the sales race for the 12^th year in a row!

However, the top 10 has changed in comparison to sales figures of February 2014.

Details

• Maruti Suzuki still continues to dominate the standings with clinching the top-four positions in this category with the highly popular models of Alto, Swift, DZire and Wagon-R holding their stand. DZire has seen a drop a fall in sales compared to the other models that are doing very well amongst the consumers.

• Maruti Suzuki’s Celerio model has been relegated to the last spot in the top-10 since it sold only 6772 units in comparison to 7323 units last year when it was at the 7^th position in the standings. The Ciaz has exited the standings owing to poor branding and customer recognition.

• Hyundai, the Korean manufacturer is seeing a superb surge in sales this year with three models especially the Elite i20 giving tough competition to the Maruti Suzukis. Each of their models are ranked at the 5^th, 6^thand 8^th spots with the Elite i20, Grand i10 and the Eon holding tough competition to the Mahindra Bolero that is on the 7^th

• The Grand i10 has seen a dip in sales in comparison to last year when they sold 10,576 units in lieu of 8687 units this year. The Eon compact hatch-back is staying strong at the 8^th position with a minor sales drop of 312 units to rake in sales of 7200 units this year.

• The Mahindra Bolero which sold 8607 units till February in comparison to 9137 units last year sees a staggering drop from 5^th position to 7^th owing to Hyundai’s sudden surge in the market, especially due to the brand new launch of the Elite i20 that has taken customers scooting towards the Hyundai showrooms due to its fuel efficiency and safety features.

• The Honda Amaze comes in at 9^th position registering sales of 7613 units compared to 7213 units last year which is a very welcome sign for the amazingly performing car.

• The Honda City and Maruti Suzuki Omni that were 9^th and 10^th last year do not figure in this list due to launch of newer, better-looking models and dwindling sales.

Mahindra two-wheelers owned by Mahindra and Mahindra is on a roll!

The company, which recently acquired a whopping 51% stake in Peugeot Scooters, is bringing France to India! Yes, you read it right! The company has flown in six specimens of the French company’s two-wheeler models in India for probable testing and R&D.It seems unclear whether these magnificent scooters might be put up for sale since most Indians are still oblivious to Peugeot as a major automobile brand and they might prefer existing brands in the brand over a comparatively new brand being introduced in India. We all know how Vespa underperformed in sales right?

We feel they have been brought down to India for possible large scale manufacture because production costs in India are lower compared to European countries. They might export them internationally for the time being since no advertisement campaign or intent of sale of such scooters have been made currently. Mahindra’s top brass of operations have denied comment at the moment about any development however, their PR sources do say that further information might surface around next month.

The six imported scooters are one of a kind, completely different in terms of other brand designs currently on sale in the Indian subcontinent. Amongst the newbies are the Satelis-2 300i that sports a 278cc, four-stroke engine producing 21bhp of power and is liquid-cooled. It has a tall visor and a large saddle for rider comfort. In terms of safety, it supports dual shocks, disc brakes and telescopic front suspension.

The Django Sport is the most stylish looking of them all, similar to a Vespa. It has a very vintage look to it and underneath its hood is a 125cc four stroke engine that is air cooled.

The Citystar 125 is a lite version of the Satelis and is powered by a 125cc 4-stroke engine that produces 14.8bhp of power and is liquid-cooled. It has a 9litre fuel tank and for safety it sports dual telescopic forks in the front.

The Metropolis 400i RS is a unique design that is set to enthral Indian scooting fans if put on sale. It is an eye-catching three-wheeled scooter that comes keyless ignition. Underneath it is fed by a 400cc four stroke engine that produces 37bhp of power and is liquid-cooled. It has disc brakes on all its three wheels to ensure driver safety.

The Speedfight 3 is the most sci-fi looking scooter of the entire lot. It looks similar to a bat-mobile if it were to be made into a scooter. It has a125cc 4-stroke engine that produces about 10bhp of power. It has USD forks at the front and disc brakes on both tires.

The Streetzone is a stripped-down, no-frills scooter that is zippy and very light at just 87 kg idle weight. It is powered by a two-stroke air cooled engine that produces 4bhp of power and is air cooled. It is suitable for daily commutes over short distances and non-highway roads.

It would be really interesting to see what Mahindra is up to. If they plan to mass-produce and sell these models in India, they are sure going to be a big hit amongst Indian youth if kept reasonably priced. Indians are bored of the Scooty, Kinetic, Wego, Flyte, Zest, Activa and the likes. It would be interesting to see how Mahindra pits the Peugeot range against their own line of scooters in India like the Mahindra Flyte. We feel the 3-wheeler Metropolis should be launched in India to help disabled and elderly people commute safely.

For now, we can only wait and watch.
